Daredevil ('03) VS Daredevil Netflix: One Scene That Shows Why One Worked and the Other Didn't

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally returned Matt Murdock to the MCU. Which made us look back at the original ben Affleck Daredevil film. Yes, it sucks--a lot. But why? What was it that made the Charlie Cox. Netflix show the singing star of Marvel TV, that the 2003 film lacked? We picked one similar scene in each movie that shows us this key difference.

There is a BIG problem in "scale" of super powers. In comics and the first DD movie, DD super power is comparable to Spiderman's. DD jumps off a 40 story building, doing flips on the way down, and just walks away.
But in Netflix version, Cox's DD is a "badass" no doubt. But he is no where close to Spiderman's power or even Affleck DD. He is not the same scale super power.
So now will the real DD please step forward: Cox's DD, Affleck DD, or comic book DD. The MCU's got a problem, if they move forward with Cox's DD as-is.
Oh and for the record, I love Affleck's Batman. But Cox's DD is more entertaining.

This is why I love Matt. Unlike every other MCU hero than can fight take damage like it didn't matter and can jump of buildings and make a superhero landing, every time Matt fights, he is vulnerable and could probably be killed anytime. Daredevil (the Netflix series) is just unparalleled in it’s dialogue, acting, cast, character development, etc, etc, etc…
What scares me, is when these actors and the characters they portrayed so brilliantly, will be “Dumbed Down” in the MCU.
It’s already apparent with Vincent Do’ofrio and his portrayal of Wilson Fisk.
His MCU Fisk is a mere hollow shadow of his Netflix Fisk.

I hate to say this but I absolutely agree with you. He should never have been introduced in a show like Hawkeye which is very light hearted. I'm not saying that Hawkeye isn't a good show in itself; but to introduce a character like Fisk in it is a really bad idea. The whole point of Fisk as a villain is that he doesn't have to do the dirty work (like participate in hand to hand fights) himself unless absolutely necessary. Where were all his thugs when he went to hunt down Kate Bishop?? Introducing him in such a fashion ironically ruins continuity and undermines all the hard work which we have seen Matt put in in ending Fisk's reign of terror.

For the fight i think he underestimated kate just. If my first thought is right it makes sense he didnt kill her. He wanted to take her hostage for Eleanor maybe and he wanted to ko kate just and thats why he didnt kill her instantly?

I’d say the show manages to keep itself grounded in real world physics as well as giving the characters a level of vulnerability and for me it’s the secret sauce that helps make it so good. In addition to Charlie Cox, you get Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mark Strong, Henry Cavill,Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais and (in the role of a 'poufty' pirate captain) Robert DeNiro. This is a huge gathering of star caliber talent throughout the cast, including many other prominent actors in cameos and lesser roles, and it is a wonderful film even without that cast being as star laden as it is. It is a film well worth watching, and Cox is excellent in this film as well.

This is cool, but for me a lot of the problems of the "old" Daredevil movie get fixed in the directors cut. It is not a perfekt version, but it makes it way better. The directors cut had nearly no romantic subplot, but a whole side story inside the court room. It showed a lot more of DD's powers in actions at low price of less "action hero love scenes with unfitting music". There were a few things they got really right in that version. But I am with you, the Netflix version is superior. IMHO the biggest problem is not giving the audience a *consistent* picture of DD, although a few of these problems are remedied in the directors cut, but sadly not all. The really crazy thing is, that some scenes are out of order in the theatrical release, no wonder the movie was so strange....
PS: The weird coffin thing is probably a sensory deprivation tank, used to isolate him from the sounds of his surroundings. I think they mentioned it in the Netflix version as well, but DD can hear too good for his own good. I have no idea if nonfictional blind people have similar problems with relaxing, but it does mesh well with his weakness against loud noises.

A small thing that the four Netflix Defenders shows did that I don't see mentioned often is how they handle the characters' iconic comic costumes.
Daredevil takes the entire first season explaining why he needs the costume. You don't even see him in it until the very last episode of season 1.
Luke Cage and Jessica Jones both play the comic costumes tongue-in-cheek, forgoing them entirely with a cameo appearance of their Silver Age versions for laughs.
Iron Fist also takes a good deal of time bringing the costume in. They don't just give them the costumes in a cheesy montage, they are shown with purpose, making the costume as much as a character identity as the character themselves.

Yeah second season was rougher, and that's the exact reason why. But to play devil's advocate for the writers... they had certain story line expectations to live up to. That being they needed to introduce The Punisher, and Electra. Those two don't really go together story-wise, as they're unrelated. So they had a difficult job, and given that I say they did an okay job doing what they had to do. They were introducing the Punisher to prop up their Punisher series that was yet to come out, and they had to set up Electra for the Hand as a threat for the Defenders series. It could have been handled better... But I can't say that was their fault. It was a lot to juggle.
Daredevil talking to Punisher on the rooftop is one of my favourite superhero scenes of all time, so of course the Electra stuff got overshadowed.

@@RuleNo2NoNames Defenders was okay to me. Forgettable? Maybe, but I think that has more to do with it being discontinued. People were excited for more, but then we got news it was cancelled and all hype dropped out of the sky. My review scale for those shows is like this:
      Daredevil (s1): Phenominal
      Punisher (s1): Great
      Daredevil (s2): Good
      Jessica Jones (s1+2) Good
      Defenders: Good
      Luke Cage (S1+2): Okay
      Punisher (s2): Not good
      Iron Fist: Bad
It's the inconsistency. But A common denominator to me is that as the series got 'closer to the end' they got worse. Iron Fist was clearly the loser. Luke cage overall had some really great moments ruined a little bit by some not great, and ham-fisted ones.
But the whole series overall was just inconsistent in it's quality. But I'd be happy to see ALMOST all of them return. (Looking at you Iron Fist.)

The movie is what got me interested in Daredevil and made me check out the comics, so I have a soft spot for it. (The Director's Cut is better) And while the show is still my favorite Marvel TV series to this day, I do feel the movie does a few things better than the show- namely, how it depicts Matt's disability. Things like folding different dollar bills, and reading brail are accurate representations of blindness that the tv series never really shows. Even the sensory tank he sleeps in is an interesting answer to how he can rest when he has such super hearing. The movie does a better job showcasing his powers, which the tv series downplays because they don't have the money/ it's more grounded. (That's all well and good, but being too grounded can feel like a show is embarrassed of its comic roots. Eventually the Netflix-verse gets to a point where it forgets Jessica Jones can fly.) Anyway, I think it's kind of weird this video makes fun of the movie's depiction of Matt's radar sense and newfound agility, even though they are comic accurate.
I also think the movie has the better costume.
But what makes the TV show work is a better understanding of the character for sure. The movie is very much a product of being in the shadow of the previous year's Spider-Man, and it showed.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@dallastexas5653 Pretty annoying? Her arc is so unwatchable, it destroyed not just season 2, but the entirety of the Defenders as well. I haven't seen such a precipitous dip in story quality since Season 2 of Heroes.
Even worse, you had Frank Castle's magnificently written Punisher for contrast. The two were night and day. I've never seen a more perfect example of writing one character from inside his head, and writing another entirely from the outside. I wanted desperately to relate to Electra the way I did to Frank, to empathize or even understand her, but the writing utterly failed to create an inner life for the character. There was no there there. It was clear that, in approaching Frank, the writers were thinking, "If I were in his shoes, this is how I'd be." With Electra, they were thinking, "This is how crazy women are." There was nothing going on inside.
Maybe that was all by design. Maybe the showrunners wanted us to hate Electra. But why would Matt be attracted to that? From our perspective, she was just another bad guy. If we were expected to believe his attraction, we needed to see why he empathized with her, why he felt kinship. They utterly failed to convey a convincing, sympathetic motivation for who she was. And because we didn't see it, we no longer understood Matt's motivation either. Her poorly written character made Daredevil a worse character too.
Stories are a house of cards. All the elements have to support one another in order for the whole to work. One unbalanced card in the foundation, and the whole thing comes tumbling down.

    • @galaxypox
      @galaxypox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@rottensquid Yea, Elektra was what killed season 2 for me as well, but I get her characters point in a sense. Matts whole deal against the Punisher is that he sees goodness in everyone, even her, while she see's darkness in him and wants to use that. Its a toxic and destructive relationship that was doomed to lead to something bad and the writers showed that part. Elektra brought out the worst in Matthew, edging him to kill the man that killed his father while Matt tried to bring out the best in her because of his whole deal of goodness and redemption. She tested his morals and tried pushing him to choose his Daredevil side over his Matt Murdock side.
But then again, your point on the writers need to show all that stuff is... on point lol. They didn't flesh her out well enough and show us what exactly he saw in her that made her so desirable (in the sense that she is what he truly wants in a partner) to him. As mentioned before, she was probably there to make him question if he was Daredevil or Matt Murdock and to create chaos in his already chaotic life.
I wanted to like her and she had potential but she just did a lot of shit that made it hard to see why she was so important, but I also get she was there to test Matt and his moral code. I don't know, I am currently rewatching the series and I am hoping I can grasp her character better. Interesting take on her!

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@galaxypox I don't think you're going to find what you're looking for. I've rewatched the season, trying to understand what they were trying to get at. Like Matt, Electra was deeply wounded by a cruel world. Now, she feels no allegiance to civilization or humanity. For her, it's all a lie. Her truth is kill or be killed. That all makes sense.
But here's the thing. With Matt, Frank Castle, even Wilson Fisk and Ben Poindexter, we clearly see the pain and alienation they carry, that drives them to violence. Each of these characters have layers, not just in their back story, but in every gesture, every decision, every line of dialog. We feel the intensity of Frank's rage in Jon Bernthal's performance, but we also feel the bottomless pit of grief just beneath it. His back-story just brings that into focus. Vince D'Onofrio sells Fisk's "powerful man in control" act until that control is lost. Then he instantly becomes a gigantic toddler having a tantrum. Deep down, all he really wants is to get back at the world that hurt him. Then there's Karen Page, always crying. That's how she expresses rage, because it's mixed up with horror as well as grief. She's being tortured by her own empathy, because no matter what the world puts her through, her heart refuses to harden. It's all in Deborah Wohl's powerful performance as much as the script.
On the other hand, Élodie Yung's performance as Electra has no layers. Regardless of her tragic backstory, she doesn't actually seem motivated by pain, or even rage. Instead, her trauma has left her thoroughly devoid of empathy. As you pointed out, Matt seems to want to help her redeem her soul, while Electra wants Matt abandon his. But as I mentioned in my previous comment, it's not clear why Matt thinks she has a soul left to redeem.
Matt may admit enjoying the violence that comes with being Daredevil, but Daredevil's violence is motivated by pain, which comes from empathy, which ultimately comes from Matt's humanity. Being human is his driving force. Electra seems more like the kind of person who might torture kittens out of boredom. Whether this was a conscious choice or just poor writing, she comes off as nothing but a conscienceless psychopath who enjoys causing pain, not for punishment or revenge, but purely for its own sake. So what exactly does Matt see in her?
And what on earth motivated his decision to abandon his identity and run away with her? Did anyone think that through? Was he planning to just stop caring about Hell's Kitchen? About crime? About his fellow man? Did he actually think he could keep her from doing anything that violated his moral compass? Or did he intend to abandon his morality altogether? Literally none of this is addressed. It was just a dramatic declaration at the season's climax that actually meant nothing and led nowhere. And when she died, what exactly did he lose? What, ultimately, was the point of it all? I still don't know.
Stories depend on a character's choices, not the unexpected stuff that happens to them. And Matt didn't actually get to make any choices in the end. The decision that whole Electra arc hinged on was not even a real choice. Matt was would never be able to meaningfully redeem Electra, nor would he have been able to abandon his humanity for her. It wasn't even a plot. It was just empty words, biding time between fight scenes with a faceless, meaningless enemy, rendering all those fights, and eventually the whole season, ultimately dull and meaningless.
Anyway, that's what I saw. If you saw something more, I'd be curious to hear it.

The main reason the 2005 film is so different from the show is that it's actually closer to the comics of that era then the current version.
Daredevil of the early 2000s was essentially updated as a semi Spider-Man clone, always swinging across buildings to get to crimes faster and after past runs of other writers shown him as also a partial batman clone.
Taking his devil motif to the logical extreme and creating the image that he is a Literal devil coming to collect the souls of the damned. Thus the walking through fire, etc.
The show while uses various elements of the comics and earlier media appearances really made their own original version that wasn't seemingly superhuman, physically and emotionally vulnerable, and more moral and grounded.
The main problem of the film wasn't that it was poorly adapted it was moreso that it was adapted from a era of comics that was more over the top.

I think I disagree that daredevil’s senses can’t also be a weakness at times, like if something is just too loud for him and he’s not prepared himself for it. I think it could be a good weakness if used right in a story. And I don’t think we should take away from the fact that while he picks up on a lot of things other people don’t on account of his super senses, he also occasionally misses some things on account of not being able to see. His blindness *is* a disability and we shouldn’t pretend it isn’t, just because he has other superhuman abilities. In some ways they make up for and are better than sight, but no he still can’t actually see and there are things he misses because of that (I remember a comic where captain America mentions that a villain was wearing the American flag and daredevil says ‘I didn’t notice’. Because there is no way he could have)

I like how the Daredevil show contrasted with the Jessica Jones show where Matt Murdoch first fails to take down Wilson Fisk physically as Daredevil and then decides to use the law as lawyer Matt Murdoch to take down Fisk’s criminal network legally. This is the exact opposite approach that Jessica Jones utilizes in the first season of her show where she fails to take down the Purple Man legally and then resorts to killing him physically at the end.

Yep! Started my re-watch of Daredevil after watching SMNWH and I have been itching to re-watch the old movie! I remember it fondly but haven't seen it in maybe 15 years and I anticipate my older self may have some different opinions especially after a quick refresher of this video. LOL I hope so badly for the show to get another season or a movie b/c I absolutely loved DD Season 3 especially and was shocked at the time when it was suddenly over.

nailed it! I miss the TV series. I have been trolling streaming services to see if anybody is showing it. Also, a LOT of the music in the TV series is AWESOME! Some really great songs!

I think the movie portrayed Matt's powers (the fact that he does indeed have super powers) and the show got his characterization. Movie has the better suit(I said it). The Netflix series never wanted to commit to the idea that the chemicals gave him superhuman senses. Sticks presence also makes it seem as if any blind person can do what he does with enough training when the point of daredevil is that his senses and coordination are near or at Spider-Man levels. He can doge gunfire. While the dove scene was a bit extravagant I get the feeling they were poorly showing that he was able to dive and and land in the perfect spots to avoid harm to himself. It would have me more sense for him to use his grapple to slow his fall in that scene than just flat out land. This is what makes me curious about his portrayal in she hulk. I wonder if they will have his abilities be closer to the comics and gives a visual of his radar sense opposed the Netflix series ground it in reality as much as possible.

One of daredevils actual weaknesses like in the comics is over stimulation to his senses (specifically his hearing), idk if a train could slow him down but something maybe louder or if he was closer to the train could definitely do it

never saw the appeal of the character. he actually appeared in live action during the hulk series, they showed his ability to see in green, was kinda interesting. felt like the black suit in the new series was a throw back to his look for back then.
