I would rather they update this with a current gen processor, bigger screen and redesigned case (with clicky thumb sticks) . The P90, P70 would be fairly capable with everything up to Wii and still be relatively cheap. A SD855 or 865 would naturally be better but would push it up to the 400-500 range. The Win line is very pricey, battery life is worse, is heavier too. If you want PC games, Android can easily stream from a PC.
I actually don’t mind the bezel on the screen. As you mentioned, the joysticks make marks when the screen is closed. Luckily the marks are on the bezel section and not on the actual screen. This can prevent damage in the future.
GPD is an expensive only one of the the good quality handhelds out there in this invasion of systems. Really like your Reviews Taki... ;) ... need to install these clean android software myself :) Small problem is.... i only have the first version.. is that also possible to get new software for ?
the gpdxd is actually amazing it has controller support and your able to play multiplayer on retro games which is fucking fantastic and thanks to its hdmi out you can hook it up easily on the tv its almost like a switch for retro games
One more nice feature this device has is 5ghz wifi. It makes for amazing in home streaming of PC games in addition to PS4. In theory this device MIGHT support Xcloud for xbox as well when they bring support to more devices.
I have this thing and love it. Being an android device I use it for podcasts and TH-cam and other stuff to tinker with. 32gigs isn’t enough to hoard PSP and Dreamcast games though. I have another 8gb card I had lying around the house in it, still I actually play mostly Mame and 16bit games on it.
Thank you for another nice review! I have had mine For about a year now. I treat my devices very well too, I wipe them almost every time I use them and am careful. I never had issues woth my ds hinges etc. So about a month after getting mine the hinge on right hand got a crack suddenly. They offered me $20 or something and I fixed it sort of by a trick I found with glue and I think baking soda? It works now, but the screen falls down if you try to play lying down in bed etc. One other issue I have had is the b button has «fallen down» a bit and no longer give that nice feedback. It works, but it doesn’t feel great. Other than that it runs the games extremely well and I’m still glad I got one!
I wonder if you can fix your input button by buying a new membrane. When your hinge had issues, they should have honestly sent you a new hinge component since they are so cheap.
all I keep hearing is "needs lots of tinkering around with settings for each game and emulator" Not at all worth the price tag. Once something this expensive can run n64 and GCN games out of the box, I'll buy.
gonna be a while. n64 games vary wildly in their emulation needs. majora's mask and banjo tooie for example needs a shitton of extra memory compared to other games.
I just picked one up for $80 on Ebay, and, i must say... It was money WELL spent. Even still now, 3 years later, it performs better than my Anbernic RG552 that i paid almost 3x the price for. Although, the 552 does have a nicer form factor, i have a soft spot for clamshell systems, so the GPD+ is now one i reach for first. Also, there have been so many firmware upgrades since this original video released, and its truly worth buying one today. If you can find one for around $100. BUY IT!!

Nice review, flowed really well. Never been tempted enough before to get one of these 'emulators', but with the ability to play PSP, Gamecube AND Dreamcast games in one console on the go, it's extremely tempting. Skies of Arcadia here I come (again)!
bought the GPD XD plus it got me to interested in playing mobile games compared before because i didnt like the feeling of not clicking buttons instead of a touch-screen because i feel its harder to control but i do admit as mentioned in this video the GPD XD plus gets really hot quite easily and hope i find a way around it :)

Issues with the GPD XD: Hardware becomes dated quickly Lacks updates to the operating system, bad for future proofing. A smartphone could accomplish the same thing and a device like an iPad is superior in every way now with options to connect any controller.
Steve Mahabir i don’t think it’s fair to say that an ipad is superior, at least when it comes to emulation processes. android and IOS struggles to emulate nintendo 64 and will definitely not be able to run gamecube. it is simply not powerful enough. N64 will certainly run better on this device instead of an ipad. DS emulation struggles to run on IOS, so i doubt PSP will also. On top of this, i don’t even think there are many focused and frequently supported dreamcast emulators for IOS. Just because an ipad has controller support does not make it superior to an emulation machine. an OS getting dated is pretty normal also, because it will be functional even though it doesn’t receive many updates. also, Ipad definitely cannot run gamecube and wii, for at least the average consumer. i don’t really think your being fair to the GPD XD. (Edit: certain devices can run gamecube and psp games at high frame rates but these are expensive and your average consumer does not have loads of money to spend on just a phone.)

Nice! Love my GPD XD+. Been gaming with it for over a year now. My only gripe is that the shoulder and a,b,x,y buttons are quite clicky. I did also replace the conductive pad for my dpad so it feels a bit more responsive. You can replace that with a nintendo ds one with a few small modifications.
Imho a switch lite is a much better investment considering that it is bound to be hackable in the long run. Until then, a sub $100 emulation machine is a way better alternative to this overpriced buggy mess. Great video as always Taki! I would love to see you do videos about hackable portable consoles!
Great Video as always! Would love to play wind waker on this. Any chance of maybe a guide to installing clean rom on this device, plus what emulators / tweaks are required to then playing some Gamecube titles reasonably well?
The biggest problem with the GPD XD Plus is the back button registers presses multiple times. Usually ends up completely closing programs completely when you press it once. Also Gamecube doesn't play well at all but that's a lesser problem. One more problem is the mini hdmi port. It works well with 1080 resolution tv's but most 4k tv's it won't work on. The work around for this is to have an adapter. As long as the mini hdmi goes into something else before the tv, it should work.
When they make a new slimmer, more powerful unit running at least Android 7 with a screen that makes use of the unit, I will be interested, until then, they can kept it. And not forgetting to iron out some bugs on the way like shoulder buttons waking the screen up when it has been folded and gone into sleep mode.
The Carrieshot dolphin is just smooth if your computer can handle it My 2003 computer with windows xp can barely push it, and pushes snes9x like a boss Gotta go through like every setting imaginable to make it usable though
Honestly, this is incredible to me. Systems like this prove there's a market not only for handheld gaming devices, but for emulation as well. I'm not big on emulation as I've never gotten it to work very well, and I prefer more tactile mediums anyway - but this thing is kind of making me reconsider! Again, really cool to see something like this.
The hard part is setting them up, and the legal gray area these devices sit in, virtually all these come from china because if a company in the US made this they would be sued into oblivion. it's a cool thing but I don't think they will ever be mainstream
I love my XD+ and just have the two gripes: 1. The battery will often keep draining when it's turned off. No idea why or how to stop this. 2. I once turned it on in a doctors' waiting room and immediately held the volume down button to keep it silent. This backfired as it made a long whistling noise at full volume and then shouted Chinese at me for like 2 minutes, with no way to turn it off or down. It scared the absolute piss out of me and I'm always worried it will do this again.

No, this really happened. The screen went blue and showed a lot of Chinese writing. I've asked around the internet and can't find anyone else this has happened to.
This video was the first I'd heard of it. It does look good and looks like it would solve the battery issue, but I'm happy enough with my emulation performance and I've put way too much time in to start again now. Especially since I use Arc Browser and the scraper doesn't work any more.
I have the XD+ for a year or two now and I'm very happy with it, so far I have only one common issue with it and that's a cracked hinge and now the screen doesn't hold position, it's closed or opened all the way. But for me this is a minor issue.
My GPD Win's A button got stuck and the battery has become defective. I'm leery on buying another GPD product as much as I really enjoy the clamshell design over the switch-like side controllers. Right now I'm just using an Xbox one controller with a clip for my phone and it's mimicking the clamshell design good enough. Hoping someone out there makes a clamshell phone holder with a controller designed into it.
IceHedge yeah bro my A button was fucked too but a few days i fixed it by opening up the device and change the silicon for the abxy buttons and now im satified :) , i learned trom a guy that had modded his gpd xd plus on here on youtube
Seems way too expensive to me for something so buggy. You can buy all those consoles (Wii, N64, Dreamcast, PSP) together used for the same price and a Switch for cheaper. That latter point in particular makes it a hard sell, I'd think.

I own a GPD XD Plus and for the past 3 months I have been desperately trying to get GameCube to run, but all games just crash my device upon booting them up. I have cleanrom and I rooted. I followed a setup tutorial here on YT. Help?
i had one of these, the hinge has screen ribbons in them that eventually wear out after opening and closing many timess, took about 5 months for mine to go out
Great machine, only reason I dont ask Santa for one is the Win 2 I've been playing FF14 on all summer. Build quality is definitely unequal, but if you get lucky, you get an absolute head turning piece of tech
I got the original GPD second-hand on ebay for £70. You won't be able to run anything more than the N64, PS1 and Dreamcast but it runs them all quite smoothly.
I use a Blackshark 2 hooked up to a TV and the GameCube controller adapter connected, it can run mario kart double dash easily at 2x resolution and a lot of other games. It's pretty cheap for the top end specs you get and it hardly thermal throttles at all.

I rather save my money for GPD Win 2. I already have my Galaxy S10 phone that runs all of these emulators at full speed. Why should I need another Android device?
Short answer NO. These gpd xd plus go broke in weeks. It happened to me the screen went black and from what i been researching tons of people say the samething.
Powkiddy have taken over from GPD as far as Android consoles goes The X18 and X15 might not be quite there yet but I'm very interested to see what they come up with next I think it might be a long wait for a new GPD Android device
I own a GPD XD, GPD XD Plus, and a GPD Win. The original XD remains the best in my mind and if you own it then the other two options aren't needed. Quite simply there is nothing that the original XD won't run that is going to be made playable on the other two. Some more frames per second certainly but not into playable realms. Sadly the XD Plus is more of a "oh crap, we can't get those chips anymore, let's grab something else" system than an actual sequel.

My PSP3000 is the best handheld retro gaming console I've ever found. Once someone finds a good way to do newer systems like the N64/Dreamcast/GameCube on a platform that costs about $75 that is also completely stable, then I'm interested. My guess is that it'll come in the form of a used Switch Lite.
@hillbilly tech Not MANY emulate the GameCube well, especially not on a stable system, and none for a pricepoint of $75 or less that I know of. If you know of something, I'd love to hear about it! For example my daughter's phone can emulate the gamecube well, on a stable system, but the phone cost $300 and it doesn't have a controller for it built in the way handheld gaming systems do, though I understand you can buy a gimmick that will attach to your phone and effectively turn it into a handheld gaming system, but I'd imagine that's not especially cheap when added to the cost of the expensive phone.
I have this and its nice, but I'm having a hard time trying to map the controls of the emulators with the control pad of the console. This is why in some ways I prefer the handheld unit to have the emulators pre-installed without an Android operating system.
Solutions like this that use hardwired controllers have such low input lag that it's almost inappreciable. If it was Bluetooth, that would be a different question.
I'll stick with my Blackshark 2 that hasn't struggled with anything yet, but it's a nice option for people that need a decent device and the build in buttons look ok.
How much is a snapdragons 835 or 855 cost? I'm sure these consoles are super Cheap to make that for the asking price I think they should put a better chipset.

I agree. The first model is far better. The plus model still has a refresh rate bug that still hasn't been fixed.
Depends on the Linux device. If it’s x86 based, it’s superior in most cases for the ability to use Wine.

Great Video as always! Would love to play wind waker on this. Any chance of maybe a guide to installing clean rom on this device, plus what emulators / tweaks are required to then playing some Gamecube titles reasonably well?

The biggest problem with the GPD XD Plus is the back button registers presses multiple times. Usually ends up completely closing programs completely when you press it once. Also Gamecube doesn't play well at all but that's a lesser problem. One more problem is the mini hdmi port. It works well with 1080 resolution tv's but most 4k tv's it won't work on. The work around for this is to have an adapter. As long as the mini hdmi goes into something else before the tv, it should work.
When they make a new slimmer, more powerful unit running at least Android 7 with a screen that makes use of the unit, I will be interested, until then, they can kept it. And not forgetting to iron out some bugs on the way like shoulder buttons waking the screen up when it has been folded and gone into sleep mode.
The CleanRom fixes some of those issues. It is based on Android 7 and the shoulder buttons no longer turn on the screen.

I use old versions of dolphin, but mario sunshine has problems with loading the goo on that version
Ive tried plenty of dolphin builds and have not gotten windwaker to run well at all

Honestly, this is incredible to me. Systems like this prove there's a market not only for handheld gaming devices, but for emulation as well. I'm not big on emulation as I've never gotten it to work very well, and I prefer more tactile mediums anyway - but this thing is kind of making me reconsider! Again, really cool to see something like this.
The hard part is setting them up, and the legal gray area these devices sit in, virtually all these come from china because if a company in the US made this they would be sued into oblivion. it's a cool thing but I don't think they will ever be mainstream
I love my XD+ and just have the two gripes:
1. The battery will often keep draining when it's turned off. No idea why or how to stop this.
2. I once turned it on in a doctors' waiting room and immediately held the volume down button to keep it silent. This backfired as it made a long whistling noise at full volume and then shouted Chinese at me for like 2 minutes, with no way to turn it off or down. It scared the absolute piss out of me and I'm always worried it will do this again.

No, this really happened. The screen went blue and showed a lot of Chinese writing. I've asked around the internet and can't find anyone else this has happened to.

Do you have CleanRom installed, thats really the way to go. The only issues ive had with mine, are wifi problems.
This video was the first I'd heard of it. It does look good and looks like it would solve the battery issue, but I'm happy enough with my emulation performance and I've put way too much time in to start again now. Especially since I use Arc Browser and the scraper doesn't work any more.

I have the XD+ for a year or two now and I'm very happy with it, so far I have only one common issue with it and that's a cracked hinge and now the screen doesn't hold position, it's closed or opened all the way. But for me this is a minor issue.

My GPD Win's A button got stuck and the battery has become defective. I'm leery on buying another GPD product as much as I really enjoy the clamshell design over the switch-like side controllers.
Right now I'm just using an Xbox one controller with a clip for my phone and it's mimicking the clamshell design good enough. Hoping someone out there makes a clamshell phone holder with a controller designed into it.

Seems way too expensive to me for something so buggy. You can buy all those consoles (Wii, N64, Dreamcast, PSP) together used for the same price and a Switch for cheaper. That latter point in particular makes it a hard sell, I'd think.
Maybe so, but thats counting having to also buy all the games you'd want play, unless you're hacking your Wii and PSP.

Great machine, only reason I dont ask Santa for one is the Win 2 I've been playing FF14 on all summer. Build quality is definitely unequal, but if you get lucky, you get an absolute head turning piece of tech

I got the original GPD second-hand on ebay for £70. You won't be able to run anything more than the N64, PS1 and Dreamcast but it runs them all quite smoothly.

I use a Blackshark 2 hooked up to a TV and the GameCube controller adapter connected, it can run mario kart double dash easily at 2x resolution and a lot of other games.
It's pretty cheap for the top end specs you get and it hardly thermal throttles at all.
I know they're doing the Win models now, but I wish they'd do a hardware refresh for this. Time for an XD 3 or whatever.

the thing is, all these emulators are now available on ios, which you can also connect an xbox controller to. im currently waiting for the 2.0 update on ios which will allow you to play with an Xbox/ps4 controller

Powkiddy have taken over from GPD as far as Android consoles goes The X18 and X15 might not be quite there yet but I'm very interested to see what they come up with next I think it might be a long wait for a new GPD Android device
I turned my android tv into an N64 and connected my xbox controller with bluetooth. I figured this all out on my own and I'm tech illiterate.
GPD micropc with controller attachmend is the option till now (pse 2 emulation on windows is at least optimized).
I own a GPD XD, GPD XD Plus, and a GPD Win. The original XD remains the best in my mind and if you own it then the other two options aren't needed. Quite simply there is nothing that the original XD won't run that is going to be made playable on the other two. Some more frames per second certainly but not into playable realms.
Sadly the XD Plus is more of a "oh crap, we can't get those chips anymore, let's grab something else" system than an actual sequel.

2. Probably easy to stream the xbox one games using an app, but youd need to click the gamepad mapping to change to xbox control format.

My PSP3000 is the best handheld retro gaming console I've ever found.
Once someone finds a good way to do newer systems like the N64/Dreamcast/GameCube on a platform that costs about $75 that is also completely stable, then I'm interested. My guess is that it'll come in the form of a used Switch Lite.
@hillbilly tech Not MANY emulate the GameCube well, especially not on a stable system, and none for a pricepoint of $75 or less that I know of.
If you know of something, I'd love to hear about it!
For example my daughter's phone can emulate the gamecube well, on a stable system, but the phone cost $300 and it doesn't have a controller for it built in the way handheld gaming systems do, though I understand you can buy a gimmick that will attach to your phone and effectively turn it into a handheld gaming system, but I'd imagine that's not especially cheap when added to the cost of the expensive phone.

I have this and its nice, but I'm having a hard time trying to map the controls of the emulators with the control pad of the console. This is why in some ways I prefer the handheld unit to have the emulators pre-installed without an Android operating system.
I finally got the controls to work properly after doing some experimenting!

Solutions like this that use hardwired controllers have such low input lag that it's almost inappreciable. If it was Bluetooth, that would be a different question.
I'll stick with my Blackshark 2 that hasn't struggled with anything yet, but it's a nice option for people that need a decent device and the build in buttons look ok.
Ill buy one when they fix the bezel/larger screen
