I want to personally thank you for exposing me to this awesome world of retro gaming I never knew existed. I found your channel through the algorithm and it's the best thing it's ever recommended to me. After watching a ton of your vids I made the choice to try out a retro handheld, and just ordered a V90. I have a feeling this little guy is going to start me on an awesome path of retro handhelds. Thanks again and you definitely earned a sub from me. Amazing content!

Thank you Russ for this review. I got burned a bit with GPD when I backed the GPD Pocket subnotebook PC several years ago. They delivered, but I found the keyboard switches to be unreliable in registering keypresses, and there was problems with Wi-Fi reception, probably due to the aluminum frame. So I was excited to learn about this this device looking at it through your eyes because your reviews are so thorough and detailed (I picked my RG351MP thanks to your reviews and was very happy with the build and control quality). Certainly looks interesting and more balanced than Anbernic’s new 552, but the price is too high, and despite that price, still no analog triggers which is a very strange omission. So I’m going to wait until you review the Odin. 😁

I want to say I am currently playing Metroid Prime Hunters on my newly acquired Anbernic RG552 that I bought after seeing your review. It is a joy to play on the Android 7.1 boot using the Drastic emulator. I have never had the issue you mention with the bottom of the touch screen being less responsive so I am not sure it is a Drastic issue (or at least, it is not the full picture).

    • @GiskardC
      @GiskardC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@unassailable6138 if you just do retro gaming, I feel the 552 is a better choice since the aspect ratio is perfect for it. However, if you also want Android gaming plus game streaming then the XP should also be considered. The interchangeable joypad are very useful for some Android games and you are paying a premium for that. Ultimately comes down to which you can get for cheaper price, I think 552 wins in that category.

Hi Edson, unfortunately the old music is not coming back. When I first made my channel I thought it would be neat to showcase one of my favorite songs related to gaming (it was composed on a Game Boy). But as my channel grew, people began to associate the music with my channel and not with the original artist's work, even though I linked to the album in every video description. So I discussed it with the artist, and in order to honor their creation, we mutually decided to remove the music by the end of 2021 and so that's why we have some new music. I love the track I'm currently using, which I licensed from the artist to use in my videos, but I never planned on it being my "theme song". I'm working with an artist right now to make proper theme music, which I'll debut later this year!

Hi, I'm big fan of your videoreviews. Maybe a suggestion for making more use of the full resolution of this GPD XP or android phone; Moonlight app supports native resolution. The GPD XP has a 1080x2400 res. If you create that custom resolution on your windows pc, by whatever graphics driver you have and if the game supports that resolution. Tadaaa widescreen gaming!!! I game a lot on a custom widescreen resolution through moonlight and I'm enjoying it. To be honoust you should take the Razer Kishi more part in this review, because it has analogue triggers comparing the X2.

This is a really cool concept but kind of a missed opportunity. If they were to make the left controller removable this would make a pretty compelling gaming phone. Right now your only option would be a X18s and to fix it. That costs around 215 dollars once you fix it. GPD is still going to do a GPD XD 2. There was just no good chip they could use that would still allow for a $199 price. This is something they directly told me. With the MediaTek Dimensity line, there are now chips to choose from. They could go with anywhere from a D600 to a D900 for it depending how soon it releases. If it happens this year I think it would be a late 2022 device. Otherwise probably a mid 2023 device.

Russ, you missed one glaring issue because you decided not to use an SD card: the latest version of Android included with the XP screws with the way apps utilize external memory. Thus, many emulators such as Retroarch, MAME, and others don’t have access to any ROMs stored on SD! The DIG frontend is a partial workaround, but even that didn’t help me with Retroarch. I hope you and/or the community will come up with some sort of good solution for this one!

1.- You could disconnect the left side controls too.

It not having these 3 things is what makes it a very expensive device.

    Mixed feelings on this one.
I mean this one defo looks like a phone screen slapped in a controller, the 20:9 aspect ratio, the rounded screen corners, the front camera whole punch.. Kinda off putting actually.
And according to The Phawx's video on this even systems that use 4x3 aspect still gives a bigger play window than an RGB10 Max with its 16:9, 5" screen, or the RG552 with its 5:3, 5.36" screen. So thats a plus for me.
Also playing PSP on this looks great.
    Performance is very good.
But overall Id pass on this.
A little expensive I think too.
Like many others Im early awaiting the Odin and will see how reviews pan out.
Not interested in Steamdeck for various reasons although I love the screen size on that one.
    Nice video btw RGC. 👍

Probably the whole reason I can't bring myself to get any of these devices is that I already have a Razer phone 2, and it's more than good enough to do all of this. Now I just need to stop being lazy and give my self full root access so I can get better controller setup for touch screen stuff.

Why not order one? The RG351MP has an excellent screen, great build quality and feels good in your hands. It also has a great interface if you choose 351elec.
It does 't play the heaviest of psp, n64 and dreamcast. But if its your first device, youiterally have thousands of games.you can play from the first Atari up till PS1 flawlessly.

Too bad for the crazy prices. RG351 in its iterations was peak handheld price/value for me but with the kinds of price we're seeing now one would be better off buying a switch lite and gorging on seasonal sales (already had the switch but certainly did go crazy on the last sales).

    Hi Russ,
Do you know if you can swap the screen of the RGB Max1 for the RGB Max2? It would be worth considering, but I don't know whether the connection fits and the size is really the same. Primarily because of the brightness.

tfw I came to look at the GDP XP but what actually got my interest was Gamesir x2. I have a pixel 6 so kinda interested between the type C version and bluetooth.. Would be nice to charge my device with type C but taking off my case to put my phone in the controller seems like a hassle.

I got this for around 300$. it was good and battery last longer. But in term of Performance in-game, It couldn't even beat my old Iphone XS with Kishi Controller. Also my android farming phone for AFK Arena (Samsung S10e for 150$) have same performance as this. i Wish they went snapdragon 800+.

I wonder more and more when someone will just sell a 7” tablet that’s compatible with joycons. They’re not everyone’s first choice, digital triggers, etc., but these companies keep reinventing the wheel and coming up with something at least as quirky, proprietary, and unnecessarily bulky.

  • @ProBlueCheese

Around 13:18 you explain how the analog gets in the way of the buttons, can you map x,y,b,a to the vertical numbered remote? Granted a button will be below or above b button, I don't know how it feels on the actual device but it doesn't sound that bad.

I am waiting for the day when something like Sony Xperia Play or PSP Go comes out, absolutely love that form factor and imo is the best way to do compact handhelds (more than clamshell if with just one screen, coz they usually have unappealing blank space on the controller side of the clam).
