This is heartbreaking and also so interesting. Thanks for offering such a great service to the boating community 👍 really cool! Tryong for a Main float next week.. hope to see MUCH less timber
Thanks for the tour of the area .....great video.....those debris fans are pretty impressive , likewise the river wide log jams .....looks and sounds like you have seen some major changes taking place .....beautiful wild river 👍
Anyone speculating how long it will take for the log jams to wash away and the debris fans to stabilize? Or which tributaries will be next to blow? Very dynamic watershed.
Love it! I went in last weekend to check it all out (looks the same still obviously). It was a cloudy day when I went and I couldn't see all the sediment in the river like you did.
Cool....great vid to watch while taking a lunch break in Albany. I'm working on replacing the sod that was in my curbside strips with all rock because you can no longer mowe around the root wads of my trees.....and since I'm going all rock I thought I might as well make an RC crawler track....lol Thanks for letting me escape to one of the Oregon rivers while I ate because I'd rather be there rockhounding, but really want to get this done...lol
YT suggested this vid to me, if you like gold panning take your pan up to the top of that slide and pan off the exposed bed rock and you might be surprised of what you'll find
Thanks for sharing your video with us. It's tough seeing this part of Idaho's cycle to renew itself. I'm glad your black bear friend didn't decide to eat you.
Great video. Thank you. I was at Elkhorn bar the evening it happened. Isn't sulfer creek at mile 2 entering from the left? I believe sulfer slide got its name from the 1936 slide. A mile below and from the right . The Morgan ranch is on sulfur creek on the left. I could be wrong , please let me know. Still love your film! Thank you
Thanks for the comment! No you’re right, Sulphur Creek enters river left about a mile above Sulphur Slide Rapid. The creek in the video that blew out from the right at Sulphur Slide Rapid doesn’t have a name on any of my maps. It comes down off of Big Soldier Mountain. I must’ve mistakenly called it ‘Sulphur Creek’ in the video, I’ll see if I can throw an edit in there. I wonder if anybody knows it’s actual name or if it has one? I’ll try to see if I can find it.
We need to dredge the rivers clear it’s tributaries and return them back too there original channels , this will return the river too it’s natural state. After I’m done processing the gold , the dredging material can be recycled for re-enforcing of river embankments … Just my thoughts 😎
Hopefully not but I have a feeling it’ll continue for a while. Now we’ll see if the same thing starts up on the Main Salmon where the Elkhorn Fire is burning right along the river corridor.
I remember floating the Main 30 years ago and being stopped by a brand new major debris flow out of Bear Creek. Today it’s a fun feature to float. Fires and debris flows have been occurring in the Salmon for millennia, but our memories are too short to fully appreciate how dynamic nature really is. Teaching us that lesson is one of the values of Wilderness.
That is sick I like the GORUCK shoes. Thanks for doing the hard work for us. What is the dog’s name is he a black lab????? He is good at hiking. The kids legs must hurt.
Sulphur Slide part of the video starts at 2:25 - 4:25. If you look there’s a small river wide tree at the top of the rapid that is a must portage. Once you are past that there’s a chance it’s runnable but you’d need to be very comfortable boating with logs. There’s quite a few logs in the bottom of the rapid. So it may be doable in a kayak (I wouldn’t do it in a raft) but I’m not sure for me that the juice is worth the squeeze.
Don’t know what caused the fire, (lightning? ) thus the increase in logs & erosion. But love to see rivers in their natural state/evolution. Thanks for the video!
Yeah you’re 100% right, that was an error in the video I didn’t catch until after I posted it and I haven’t figured out how to edit it yet. The creek that blew out doesn’t have a name on any of my maps but it comes down from Big Solider Mountain. Sulphur Creek is about a mile upstream from Sulphur Slide Rapid
Why didn't you film the bear at all? It's amazing how the fire damage makes it look so thinned out like the higher elevation forests in central Oregon . Fires sure created a lot of woody debris and giant log jambs.....all that debris in the end will create a lot of habitat for many species that rely on all those dead & downed trees that they need to thrive and flourish. back to work...lol
We’ve created a brave new world. One stuffed with billions of people, millions of tons of emissions and unstable, unpredictable weather. Better get used to it. Not getting better.
Yeah, it almost like someone has determined to take it upon themselves to burn over and remove people from the equation. What kind of supreme arrogance does this?
This is awesome. Thank you for taking the time to hike in and get the video.
Of course, no problem! I watch and appreciate all your videos so it’s nice for me to make a video that hopefully does the same for you.
Thanks for hiking in and sharing the video!
You’re welcome and thank you for the comment!
Big thanks for the hike view. Nothing beats Nature's handiwork.
Thanks Brian ! This is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
The video I hadn't known I wanted to see. Thank you!
Fantastic video! Thanks for doing the reconnaissance mussio. for us all.
Awesome!!! So cool that you made the trek down to see and film all the new dynamic changes.
Glad you liked it!
Unreal! It’s a completely different river than it used to be! Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you! A great report 🙂
Cheers Brian, great information and documenting changes in the mighty M.F.
Cool, enjoy your hiking bro. New friend here
Wow! Thanks for the footage:)
19:02 Notice how the slide on the left has pushed the river to the right, and it's now undercutting the slope.
This is heartbreaking and also so interesting. Thanks for offering such a great service to the boating community 👍 really cool! Tryong for a Main float next week.. hope to see MUCH less timber
Stunning changes. Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Boundary Creek deserted is really strange to see. Thanks for this.

Nice! Yeah I was surprised how much sediment there was in the water
It would be cool too hike with this guy
Nice to see the rivers that I grew up around I don't remember all the names but still nice to see the beautiful country again salmon idaho

Thanks for sharing. Love to see the changes of a wild river like MFS
Very nice video I love this
Damn!
i haven't run the middle fork since 2007, the amount of beetle-kill in there since then is insane.
I would say forest fire caused all that, lodgepole pine go up like candles
nope@@banffdigger
Friend saw people putting in on Sat the 12th! One raft and several kayaks.
YT suggested this vid to me, if you like gold panning take your pan up to the top of that slide and pan off the exposed bed rock and you might be surprised of what you'll find

Looks like the fire happened a few years ago. Must have been some massive rains come through the last two summers.
Many different fires in the drainage over the years.
Wow.. Thank god no one got hurt.

Strainerville.
If you're related to Virgil Olson from Salmon (who I understand has passed), you and I are cousins, I'm from the Carlson side of relations ^5
Hopefully this doesn't become too annual of a tradition for you. But it's been really cool to see both years!
Hopefully not but I have a feeling it’ll continue for a while. Now we’ll see if the same thing starts up on the Main Salmon where the Elkhorn Fire is burning right along the river corridor.

what is the name of this hike/trail head that lead you down to such splendor?
That is sick I like the GORUCK shoes. Thanks for doing the hard work for us. What is the dog’s name is he a black lab????? He is good at hiking. The kids legs must hurt.
Did Sulphur Slide look runnable at the bottom of the rapid? Looked doable at the top.

@OlsonH2O thanks for confirming that tree at the top too - planning for at least 3 scouts and portages!
Don’t know what caused the fire, (lightning? ) thus the increase in logs & erosion. But love to see rivers in their natural state/evolution. Thanks for the video!
Your video is really clear what kind of camera you using please let me see thank you
Is this in Idaho?
Question: Are the slides a result of the forest being burned over?
Yes, and then rain storms make the creeks blow out causing the loosened soil and logs from the fire give out. Like a landslide.
I don’t believe it’s Sulphur Creek that blew at the rapid sulphur slide. That little creek has a different name. Sulpgur creek is up higher.
Yeah you’re 100% right, that was an error in the video I didn’t catch until after I posted it and I haven’t figured out how to edit it yet. weird where did it all come from on the first slide there not very big or steep hills wouldn't have figured that could ever happen wow
Are all these slides due to fires followed by flash floods?
Yeah, fire then some big late summer storms
Why didn't you film the bear at all? It's amazing how the fire damage makes it look so thinned out like the higher elevation forests in central Oregon . Fires sure created a lot of woody debris and giant log jambs.....all that debris in the end will create a lot of habitat for many species that rely on all those dead & downed trees that they need to thrive and flourish. back to work...lol
Lot of firewood for camp, to bad you can't float to camp..
We’ve created a brave new world. One stuffed with billions of people, millions of tons of emissions and unstable, unpredictable weather. Better get used to it. Not getting better.
Forest fires, flash floods and log jams were around long before people or their "emissions". Come on man.
A brave new world lol
Climate change doing it's thing. A whole different river. I'm sure the salmonids are suffering from all the fine sediment
Yeah, it almost like someone has determined to take it upon themselves to burn over and remove people from the equation. What kind of supreme arrogance does this?
Is not going to be back 😢in our lifetime 😢😢😢
Are the kids fine? I bet their legs hurt!
