    From Redside Association Post on Facebook, any have further info:
    For Middle Fork boaters:
    Ramshorn and Spike Creek blew out again last night. There is also a new blow out just upstream from Ramshorn. It sounds like there are at least three new log jams. There is a new log jam at Ramshorn, a new one at Spike Creek and a new one between Velvet and Boy Scout. There may also be more issues upstream and/or downstream from there. The river is very muddy coming into Ramshorn too.
    The river is running thick mud and may continue to run muddy for a while.
    The bridge at Ramshorn has been removed from the river and is above the high water mark for the winter. It will be removed from the wilderness next spring.
    Stay safe!!

    We hiked to Ramshorn on September 18 and there was a log jam blocking the current by the rock cliff on the left. The Ramshorn pack bridge was on river right, somewhat mangled.

    It's amazing what has happened.......we rafted it at 5' in June. I went over Velvet sideways in my 15' raft and was tossed, but the raft stayed upright, now it looks like a kayak would have trouble squeezing through lol! Hopefully everything gets washed next spring.

    I thank you very much for a great video and commentary! We, 2 of us launch in a few days from the top. Really appreciate your sharing this. I hear efforts will be made to remove the bridge this Thursday and Friday. We launch Fri and hope to get some pics. Thunderstorms in Donnelly tonight and moving east , so... we will report back after the 21st. Thanks for the video

    • @thewhitewaterstate
      @thewhitewaterstate  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome! I'm glad it helped. We're also going late September. I think it's still pretty dynamic in there and if we get some storms in September things could definitely change, only time will tell. If we do get some rain I might hike back in there in a few weeks a check it out again. But if I do I'll take some more video.

    • @danielmurrer575
      @danielmurrer575 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian - thanks for doing this. Six of us are planning to go off the top on September 21st. It looks like from your video there is a longer portage around ramshorn and the log jam immediately downstream, a pull over log in a right channel within hells half mile, and a portage around velvet. Would you agree if all things stay the same from when you went down? Any further jams reported downstream of velvet?

    • @thewhitewaterstate
      @thewhitewaterstate  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielmurrer575 No problem! Yeah I'd agree with that for the most part. You might not have to portage the two jog jams at ramshorn it depends on what type/size boats you're taking (kayaks and small rafts might not have to portage). The pull over log in the right channel is right at the Spike Creek Blowout just above Velvet. Velvet will likely be a portage for anything but a skilled kayaker.
      There aren't any other log jams we've heard about below Velvet but things could've changed since we were there. We're launching from the top Sept 26 and are planning on scouting all of those things from Ramshorn to Velvet again but if things haven't changed it should be very similar to what you described. We're using this hike as a baseline of conditions while anticipating things will change and acting accordingly. Hope you have an awesome trip! And if we get some storms rolling through, I might go hike it again and I'll make a new video.

    So fascinating to see. Thank you for putting this video together. I’ve got a June 10th permit for 2023, I’m hoping you’re right and most of those logs wash out. Any plans to hike down end of May?

    • @thewhitewaterstate
      @thewhitewaterstate  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'd like to hike in and check it out when the water is a little higher or maybe fingers crossed we can pick up a cancellation permit like last year.

    After your hike to the blowouts, are you reconsidering launching from Boundary at the end of the month. I am launching on the 19th of September but haven’t decided whether we fly or launch from boundary. Smallest raft I own is a 14 foot Avon. Thanks for your report!

    • @thewhitewaterstate
      @thewhitewaterstate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are still going to launch from Boundary but we will be a smaller group with a few kayaks (hardshell's and IKs) and maybe one or two small paddle rafts (10ft or 13ft). We aren't planning on taking any oar frames. There's a chance that if the water drops more that we'd have to portage both log jams at Ramshorn and Velvet. We'll be doing a smaller, light self-support style trip. Things may still change between now and then, logs shifting or maybe some storms coming in and the potential for the creeks to go again or new ones could blow out, so we're kind of playing it day by day at this point. But the plan is to go light from Boundary, we personally wouldn't go from Boundary right now with oar framed boats loaded like a typical Middle Fork trip.
