  • I review and compare the 3rd generation of Yonex Astrox 88S Pro and Astrox 88D Pro which are hugely popular head heavy doubles badminton rackets. The Astrox 88S Pro are catered towards players wanting more speed and the Astrox 88D Pro racket is aimed at players wanting more power.

I was able to have my first session yesterday and in general I would agree with CKyew. The 3rd generation feels like a mix out of 88d pro (2nd) the 100zz and a bit 77pro. It is definitely faster than the 88D before and actually for me also a small bit faster than the 100zz. I love that. It is also lighter but not less powerful than before, just different. But maybe a tick less easy to generate power. On the other hand the feeling is now more direct. At least I felt the 2nd gen a bit hollow. I would say the 3rd gen is now a more all-round racket with power, but also more control with a bit of flex at the right spots but still head heavy and stiff (even a bit less). The only thing that is missing to me is the drive quality. Overhead shots and drives from the second gen and the 100zz feels like on rails. Very solid. The new 88D feels to me less solid and powerful on drives and some shots. The new 88D has the speed of the 100zz and also still lot of power if you hit the ball in sweet spot and at the same time a better defence than 100zz and the second gen of the 88d and more control at the net. I keep testing it and actually consider to switch from my 100zz to this one if I can manage the slightly different timing because timing and shots feels different as CKyew also said.
Here my impression of the new 88D pro (3rd Gen):
    - Clears: 11/10 (wayyy more power and higher)
    - Smash (9/10)
    - Drives (7/10)
    - Drops (9/10)
    - Net (9/10)
    - Defence (9/10)
    - Swingspeed (9/10)
In comparison my ratings for the 2nd Gen of 88D pro:
    - Clears: (10/10)
    - Smash (10/10)
    - Drives (9/10)
    - Drops (8/10)
    - Net (7/10)
    - Defence (7/10)
    - Swingspeed (6/10)

i have that racket still, honestly prefer it over the 88d pro, i felt like it just generates faster smashes but not powerful smashes. so i end up using the 99 pro since i felt like it was identical power and little bit faster imo. i would love to see this new gen material be used in other pro tour rackets

Great review! Very informative. From my opinion it sounds like the 3rd gen 88dp pro is similar to the Victor tkf enhanced in terms of smaller head, more flex in the shaft. In fact, I made the switch from the 2nd gen 88dpro to the tkf enhanced and haven’t looked back. The increase in speed and defense has got me enjoying this racket.

Excited for the following tour/game/play review.
I would like to ask though, if ever you're planning to switch rackets, would you choose the astrox 88d or 88s 3rd gen or would it be the nanoflare 1000z (if I remember correctly you were slightly tempted in switching to 1000z on your review).
One more question, would you give your take or comparison between the 88s pro 3rd gen, arcsaber 11 pro, and nanoflare 1000z. If I'm not mistaken these 3 rackets are relatively fast paced and have balance points below 300mm. Which among these 3 is better in these categories: raw power, stable shots, better defense, and overall playability. (Video recommendation if possible).
Thank you always for the great and lit reviews from you. Keep up the great work.

I’m having hard time choosing between the NF800 Pro and the Astrox 88S Pro Gen3 4U, and I noticed they are in different categories one’s head light and the other's head heavy. But in CK's video, the swing weight seemed similar.Astrox 88s just 1 gram heavier. Can you share your thoughts on these rackets from your experience using them?

Just bought the 88S Pro after carefully watching so many reviews on TH-cam and all i can say is ... THIS IS THE BEST RACKET EVER (at least for me). It feels superb to play on front court , but also really great on back as it's slightly head heavy (i got the 4U G6 version) it helps with the smash power.
