  • My experience with FOIL and WAYDOO eFoils. Review and comparison of the features, performance, and options.
(2023)Though both brands have changed since this video, there is still good information. Keep in mind that one of the biggest changes is FOIL no longer offers the cheaper fiberglass option. but when comparing extended range vs 2 Waydoo batteries the prices are still comparable

    Updates:
As of May 31st 2024 FOIL officially announced they are done, closing doors, no longer in business, bankrupt. 😢
Keep this in mind if buying a used one and look for my tips video for buying used.
(2024) FOIL Referral links, including mine below no longer seem to work but feel free to try.
Much has changed since this video, but still informative.
WAYDOO is expecting to release an all new line of eFoils known as the EVO. Truly it will be entirely different with very little compatibility to the Flyer ONE.
Nothing new for FOIL in 2024 that I know about.
⭐ If you decide to purchase a FOIL I highly recommend upgrading to the extended range 50Ah battery for $1,000 more. It is the same weight as the standard battery. You will not gain any weight savings with the 40Ah battery.
I also recommend the Forged deck shape over the cyberdeck shape because it has handles and is a more forgiving hydrodynamic shape. However, this upgrade is $2,000. Handles can be added to the cyberdeck shape for a few hundred more.
The 250, 170, and 165 wings have the highest rate of satisfaction. I do not recommend any other Wing besides these three unless you are already an experienced and knowledgeable eFoil rider.
I do NOT recommend the 200HA wing for new riders. The 200 is nice in ideal smooth conditions but is very challenging and "tippy" in rough water riding for even experienced riders.
(2023) FOIL no longer offers the fiberglass package. The base package is more expensive now.
For FOIL eFoil I recommend upgrading to the forged deck because it includes handles and has a more hydrodynamic shape. I recommend the 250 wing for those who are learning and I recommend upgrading to the extended range battery because the standard battery weighs the same. You will not get a savings in weight by purchasing the standard battery versus the extended range battery. This recommend package cost $10,000... Compared to Waydoo eFoil with an additional battery and a folding prop for similar riding range the cost will be about $9,700. $9,200 without the folding prop.
But if equivalent range is not important than Waydoo will cost between $6 and $7k without or with the recommended folding prop.

FOIL Wings. ALL Wings, purchased separately from the accessories shop will cost $799. This includes the Classic Wing too. If you plan on owning multiple wings, including the Classic Wing, it would be economical to keep the Classic Wing in your eFoil package and buy additional wings separately. Many early riders started with the Classic Wing and we're fine. IMO, the 250 HA Wing is a super beginner friendly wing, even if you are not 200 lbs +. Very Stable but turns great too based on my style, body, and use. The 200 HA wing feels best in smooth conditions and some owners feel the Classic is an easier ride than the 200. Everyone will have different opinions of every wing, but again, I recommend the 250 over the 200 for beginners and sharing with multiple friends and family.

⚠️FOIL remote lanyard can easily break. Please see the following video about this. th-cam.com/video/qXzyNpf2ozI/w-d-xo.html
Do not drop the remote or you may lose it. Lost remotes are not covered under warranty. Add a stronger lanyard at your own discretion.
September 2022 - A stronger lanyard will be used based on owner feedback. Regardless of this stronger lanyard, please see video anyway for awareness.
Just to clarify, FOIL is **"built"* in the USA in Pensacola, Florida. Some components come from China, though am not sure exactly which ones. The wings are made in China. The board is made in Thailand, which is also where Fliteboard decks are made for example. Many brands have components made in other countries, including China.
May 2022 - I've been informed that Current Waydoo eFoils have an HIN engraved in the frame on the bottom of the board. Water absorption is much **less* of an issue, but will still occur as is the nature of the foam. There is a MSO/MCO included with the eFoil with current purchases.
The photo of the "updated Waydoo remote" is actually an old image of the original remote without the hand grip. The hand remote has not changed as I thought.
An updated Wadoo Flyer One Plus with efficiency upgrades will be available soon. A more efficient propeller for Waydoo eFoil will be available Summer of 2022 as well. Info on WFO+ (Waydoo Flyer One +) here

Waydoo Folding prop and additional wings, including a High Aspect Wing coming Fall '22
June 2022 - FOIL now has a folding prop available for preorder.
FOIL also reduced prices due to increased volume 👏.
FOIL Remote waterproofing improved from depth of 10 ft to 25ft. New remotes come in black 🖤 only.

      Thanks and you're welcome.
I have tried a Lift only once, but that was almost 2 years ago. No personal experience with Flite or any other brand yet.
In my opinion, I strongly did not feel that the Lift experience warranted the extra price at the time. However, there is a more affordable Lift model now that didn't exist then. My opinions might be a little different if I were to try the latest model(s).
There are two features lacking in Lift that are really important to *MY* personal preferences: 1.) the remote has no safety lock so the acceleration trigger is always hot. There are arguments for why this is preferable and/or a non-issue, but none of them hold water for me.
2.) I don't like the extra connections of cables and hoses in the battery box. I prefer a simple and quick assembly and disassembly.
Lift is going to be the best brand for those who prioritize compatibility with other foil disciplines and accessories, such as wings.
That said, I'm happy to say that there is now an adapter for AXIS wings for FOIL that I obtained recently. This helps improve options and customization on my GetFOIL.
Fliteboard, like Waydoo has a unibody fuselage/motor design. This is the number one difference in my opinion vs Lift, FOIL and other brands with separate motor. With a unibody design you can utilize the full length of the mast. They ride a bit differently. Some prefer it and some don't. There is little to no compatibility with other foil discipline gear. Unibody eFoils generally must use only the wings made for them. Not many adapters exist to effectively use other wings and stabilizers from other brands.
I actually prefer the performance of a unibody design style efoils, but I have interest in experimenting with additional wings and potentially dabbling in pump foiling and wakefoiling.... So I find myself torn between the two motor styles 😅.
Best thing you can do is to try before you buy.
Good luck and may you Live life to the Foilest ✌️🤙

It's growing quick. The unique sensations of flying and 3-Dimensional surfing (even on flat water) is a major attraction 🧲. Also the realization of the FREEDOM that comes with e-surfing in general.
Many are still shocked by the now lower prices (used or new), but once they look past the initial purchase price, and see how affordable everything else can be, they see the potential... Also pointing out the prices of non-motorized-foils helps make the prices more digestible 😅.
Transportation, manpower, time, storage, maintenance, etc. When all these things are considered, you realize it's all as easy as a kayak or SUP... easier in some cases.
The most accessible (and dare I say affordable) way for people to surf land-locked regions, like my Lake Powell.
Quickest path to Zen is a surfy one.

Hello neighbor 🤙🏼. I am blessed to live here. thanks.
I still need to rewatch my video here and add in time stamps and any updates I may have missed. I've done fairly good at adding in updates at the bare minimum in my pinned 📌 comment. One I need to correct, or be more clear on is FOIL is "built in the USA". Some components such as the wings are made in China, but it's still very beneficial to have headquarters and support in the States, especially as FOIL grows.
Commercial Use of eFoils and motorized surfboards is not yet Authorized on Lake Powell. NPS with Coast Guard is still evaluating commercial use. I put in a request for commercial use about 2 and 1/2 years ago... All in good due time I suppose 😅.

    • @eFoilLakePowell

Preference is very much an individual thing, pending what a person prioritizes.
Personally I ride the FOIL more often. More range, wings, and other options and performance than my Waydoo. The one thing I miss about the Waydoo, is the little extra altitude I can get from the unibody fuselage and wing design. I enjoy the extra height and length of mast to play with.
I also like the Waydoo foam board more for teaching and beginners, but that's about other's riding the board and not me.
I've only had 5 to 10 min with a Lift eFoil. The setup I tried was easy to ride and felt good, but it just didn't strike me as being worth double the price for my intended use and preference.
Two things besides price that I really didn't like: 1.) the multiple cables for assembly 2.) I was disappointed there is no safety lock on the remote. The trigger is always hot. These may seem like little things to others but for me they fail MY preferences and what I prioritize in an eFoil.
Lift has a great advantage for those who participate in other foil sports. Much of the gear is interchangeable, including a massive wing selection. Reputation, dealer and affiliate availability is another benefit.
⭐ If possible, try before you buy. ⭐ Figure out what YOU like best. What do you prioritize in an eFoil experience?
Board sizes, wing choices, proximity of a dealer, warranty, sound of the motor, fuselage/motor type (unibody or separate), safety, battery range, app features, ease of assembly, price, other foil sports, sharing with family or not, Etc.

Are you saying the patroller wing is faster across the water than the explorer wing? If so, how fast will each wing last on a battery charge?

    • @eFoilLakePowell
      @eFoilLakePowell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, Patroller wing is faster and can be ridden faster more comfortably than the beefy explorer wing. Explorer wing has too much surface area to comfortably ride fast.
As the name kinda implies, the Explorer wing will give you a bit more range to "explore" but maybe only up to 10% more range than the Patroller wing.
edit: battery life (of any brand) will depend on:
      1.) battery size or power
      2.) rider weight
      3.) wing type and size
      4.) speed
5.) water conditions, specifically if a rider is catching waves of the ocean or boats with a folding prop. Waydoo now has a folding prop and additional wings available, such as a high aspect wing.

Is foil as quiet as the lift?

    • @eFoilLakePowell
      @eFoilLakePowell  ปีที่แล้ว

FOIL is likely a bit louder. I wish I had a decibel meter to compare and more access to other eFoils.
I rode only one time with a Lift owner and tried his board for 5-10 minutes.
The two have very different sounds. FOIL has a higher pitch sound than Lift and my Waydoo too. It's almost like a miniature jet-engine sound maybe.
Unfortunately, the audio quality is not great on the insta 360 one X2 that I use for my rides. At times, I feel it also tends to exaggerate the higher pitch sounds in my other videos.
Before the *optional* sound reduction update to change the frequency (for early FOILS purchased in 2021 only) it had a whiny sound mixed in.
My cell phone got destroyed a while back (waterproof bag had a hole 😓) with some of my editing projects. I still have the raw footage backed up and I'm trying to catch-up on videos (including a dedicated motor sound video) and post more often.

@@GustavoTestaCorrea Interesting 🤔. I think I missed this in the "exemptions". it mentions rafts, canoes and outboard motors for the less-than 25hp exemption.
I have options for registering in Utah or Arizona. I chose Utah because it was easier and closer. Both States told me over the phone that motorized surfboards had to be registered.
You might be able to argue that exemption and see what they say. It's up to you if you want to be proactive and call first or wait until you're pulled over and go for the ask for forgiveness route 😉😅.
I never got pulled over for the couple of months that I had no stickers (as I was waiting to get paperwork together). I did eventually get told that I needed a Glen Canyon National recreational sticker (after I had registration Stickers applied) though by a ranger who saw my board on the ramp. I didn't know I needed one until a ranger told me that all motorized vessels needed one. Maybe there's possible exemptions for that sticker I missed too 🤔?
Eventually, I believe every state will require motorized surfboards to be registered. Any potential exemptions or loopholes will no longer apply as motorized surfboards become more common and popular. States will want to regulate them for safety and money.

    Is this sport good exercise?

    • @eFoilLakePowell
      @eFoilLakePowell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good question. It can be yes. It depends on your riding style to an extent. Though it is electric, there is balance involved and great effort can be put into turns and carving around. If in the ocean or stealing a ride on boat wakes, a more challenging surf experience can be had. Swimming any time you fall/ crash adds exercise. Practicing riding both left and right-foot-forward is a rewarding challenge too.

Agreed. I waited until there was competition besides the 12k price between Lift and Flite... But knowing what I know now, and how I feel, I wish I had bought one sooner and made payments.
The very low cost of use after the initial purchase makes everything come into focus and easier to stomach. Add in a personal passion for the local lake and surfing, and it all becomes priceless... Especially when there's no Ocean or other bodies of water or sources of water recreation nearby (such as a wave pool or cable park.
Transportation Cost: no need for a truck and trailer to haul this watercraft. I can fit BOTH eFoils INSIDE my little Camry car. More portable than a kayak or SUP.
Storage Cost: again, it's more portable than a kayak. I can store it in my closet. No need to winterize.
Manpower Cost: I can surf solo. No need to assemble a crew of 2 or more.
Time Cost: Because of all the reasons above, I can go ride ANYTIME and ANYWHERE. No need to wait in line at a Launch Ramp and I can easily go year round.
I'll ride on days that would be too choppy or windy for wakeboarding because the foil rides Soo smooth in almost all conditions. *Caution, safety and experience is advised. Ride at your own risk*
Maintenance Cost: Small watercraft with very few parts. No need for oil or gas (gas prices right now 🫣)... Though, if something does go wrong, it'll most likely need to be sent in for warranty/ repair... Sooo... This one is a bit subjective to an extent
Customization of the ride: Different wings will offer totally different feelings and rides. No other watercraft or watersport can be modified so much so easily to fit different rider sizes, styles, and skill levels. A rider can even swap different board sizes with the same drivetrain. No need for two motors.
Fun and Zen:. This is the most subjective reason of all and possibly the most important. If you don't use it, and enjoy it, all the reasons above mean nothing. I just Love foiling so much. Relaxing, fun, and still great exercise too. It's like surfing in 3D. Surfing Water and Air.
"The quickest path to zen is a surfy one" I like to say. No better place than Powell too. My happy thing in my happy place... If I can get my wife on one someday, I'll have my happy person along too 😉.
