  • This drive is suffering from a common issue with the spindle control IC chip in which it fails to spin the drive up and gets very hot. This can cause the chip to go kaboom and ruin someone’s day.
By holding my thumb onto the chip, I was able to get the drive to spin properly. However, that chip is still faulty, and I won’t spin it up very often.

    Sounds so good!

I think the chip getting hot has to do with the friction of the spindle increasing over time.

I had one of these. Randomly it would work, other times it would bang the head around during it's seek test.

Mine gets hot, but not hot enough to keep it from running. it does burn my thumbs though.

Get a small heatsink for it. That actually helps quite a bit.

THIS. I need a heatsink for my WD1600JS. It gets real hot real quick while running. Not an issue I don't think

I burned my finger with a Seagate U series the same way, it got around 10000 degrees while spinning up and apart from a nasty blister i dropped it and it seized, later i found that i could unf*** it by dropping it on the opposite side
