Those old Seagates probably aren't doing anything because there isn't a controller present. The first IDE drives either had a small initial POST and waited for a command to perform the entire test, or didn't do it until given the command by the controller. I think it's so the computer can observe the test to make sure everything is working correctly. That Caviar 31600 sounds amazing. It's hard to find the ones that have the faster test. Also may I suggest cutting the amount of time the drive idles after it's turned on? Just makes the video easier to watch

I still use the WD10JPVX (very similar to that one) in my ps4. Last time I pulled it out to read the smart data, it had close to 45k hours and not a single bad sector or any other error (disabled head parking with wdidle3 of course). The ps4 is never turned off, basically running 24/7. The hdd was made in Apr 2014.

Wow! That drive I actually picked out at Office Depot in 2012. Dang those are some good smart attributes. Speaking of pulling drives from consoles, that 80gb toshiba and 20gb fujitsu at the end of the video were actually pulled from my ps3 and xbox 360!

I've never had a bad U-series drive personally. I've taken the silly rubber boot off every one I've owned.

The WD5002AALX probably just needs a new connector or some resoldering.

12:33 I have one of those Hitachi HDS721050CLA362s. Mine was factory refurbished and sounds like a 7K1000.D. Must have had a firmware update or something. I absolutely love these 7K1000.Cs. That distinctive beep in the seektest is what makes it unique.

Yeah, I was wondering that. Plus It would always get stuck when not powered on for a long time. Crazy enough, the drive still reads and writes!

Do you have an IDE controller for the seagate? If you don't, it may not run.

Unfortunately not at the moment. I used to have a USB to IDE, but it broke. I will need to get a new one.

@@zackarypetch-blevins751 Unfortunately they will need a dedicated IDE interface to work and not a USB one. I don't know of any USB bridge which supports 5V signaling.
