  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad X230 laptop with the new Intel 3rd gen Ivy Bridge Core i5 CPU. This is the follow up to the well received ThinkPad X220 and it has a 12.5" display, the usual excellent ThinkPad keyboard and it weighs 3 lbs. Our model has a sharp 1366 x 768 display and a 320 gig 7200 RPM hard drive. This notebook is for road warriors who need more expandability and power than an Ultrabook offers. I purchased one least week...I am the third owner ... and I am loving it. It´s powerful and very stable.The funny thing is that we can find its parts so easily and at a great price.
      The SSD hardrivec and the i5 processor work so well.

    Thank you very much for a thorough review. My kids had two of them. They were getting overheated. I recycled one of them because I did not know anything about fixing laptops few years ago when I recycled it, but kept the other one hidden (from my wife) in the garage as I did not want to throw it away. I am thinking to clean the fan, vents and replace the thermal paste/grease. I already did that recently to my son's Toshiba Satellite which was getting overheated, and it helped. I read some tips in the Internet on reducing the overheating of Lenovo Thinkpad. Thanks for your time and sharing.

    • @zkmoonea
      @zkmoonea 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      need to repaste with good thermal paste. this laptop is very cool actually. I installed win8.1 on it, and much cooler than win10. 40-45 c when idle. if you need ssd, buy the 2.5 inch ssd, dont buy the mSata cuz it will heat up much quickly due to limited space. I just bought one to replace my mum's t470, bcuz i feel that one is just too heavy for a lady.

    • @sweetmemories4448
      @sweetmemories4448 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@zkmoonea Thank you very much for the tip. I 100% agree with you that it will get overheated too quickly if Win10 is installed. Thanks for the mSata tip.
      Soon after posting my earlier comment, I cleaned the fan and replaced thermal grease/paste. The overheating issue improved greatly. Still when watching movies in TH-cam, it gets overheated as I can feel. However, I keep my lap top on top of a cooling pad which has two fans and its size exactly fits my laptop, the ThinkPad.
      The main reason for overheating is the tiny clearance between the back side of laptop and the table on top of which we keep while using. I increased the clearance/gap by attaching soft cushion spacers (at 4 corners without blocking any air vent of the laptop), bought from Dollar store, (a lot of those circular ones and rectangular ones in a dollar which have adhesive backs). That itself improved air circulation under the laptop. Then I put the laptop on the cooling pad which connects to any USB port of the laptop for power. Now it is cooler than ever!!!

    The ThinkPad X230 and Vaio Z are two of my favorites. Personally, I'd pick the Vaio Z for the lovely higher resolution display and much more portable design. But the ThinkPad is hard to kill, and that's important for constant travelers. It takes a lot of abuse. The ThinkPad is also more upgradable (HDD and RAM).

    • @sweetmemories4448
      @sweetmemories4448 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mythicpower2306 This notebook does not have a graphics card as we see in desktop computers. Instead, it has a Graphics Processor (a CHIP like the CPU CHIP) built into the motherboard of this notebook. This Graphics Processor (GPU) works same as the Graphics Card. The GPU helps in playing the video games or TH-cam movies as the games require lot of processing. While processing very large amount of instructions to display the actions of games or movies, the processor gets hot. The heatsink and the fan inside the notebook remove the heat from the processor to cool it down. When the notebook overheats, its vents (holes in the Notebook cover) needs to be cleaned as well as the fan (inside the notebook/laptop) needs to be cleaned. There are TH-cam videos on how to clean fans of laptops/notebooks. Also those videos explain how to replace the thermal paste/grease of the heatsink that covers the GPU as well as the CPU. The thermal paste/grease helps transfer heat from the GPU as well as CPU to the heatsink then the fan sucks the heat from the heatsink and blows it out of the notebook/laptop, thus cools the processors. Hope it helps.

      @@mythicpower2306 please search online for the hardware-specifications of this computer. I do-not know if it comes with the *option* to have a "dedicated video-graphics card" in it, but as far as I know, this laptop comes-standard with "integrated graphics", which eat-up some memory from the Random-Access-Memory (ie. "Ram") modules to utilize for the video-memory.
      Unfortunately neither the hardware-manufacturers nor the company the computer-brand is nor Intel (who makes the processor-chip) say how-much "video memory" the "integrated-graphics" has.

    I got one off eBay a month ago, and I wasn't disappointed. It has 16 GB of RAM, 3rd gen Intel Core i5, and I put a 1TB SSD in it, with 3 partitions: One 250 GB for Windows 7, Another 250 GB for Windows 10, and a 500 GB for the data, the latter to serve as a bridge between the two Windows versions, so I can just use one partition for my data instead of two without having to shut down and reboot into another OS. And just to set the record straight, I do use that ExpressCard slot. The reason? To put a TV tuner in it. And to not use a USB port for my TV tuner, as that would rather be used for my mouse and storage devices. Which is why I chose this particular laptop as my road warrior. Especially for the legendary ThinkPad quality. And because I use Windows Media Center to watch and record TV over the air. This was, and still is, useful when I go on trips to other cities. That is why I dual-boot 7 & 10. Because I don't know what Microsoft was thinking when they discontinued Media Center from Windows 10 onward. Best of both worlds indeed! Compatibility on one side, a touch of modern on the other! Who knows? Maybe a 9-cell battery is in the cards in the near future!

      I'm going to do the same. Will upgrade the T430 as much as I can and buy the X230 for portability and for the fact that they will have the same keyboard and practically the same specs in hardware terms. It's a gem for coding and programming on the go. Nice!!

    • @Blendedasian
      @Blendedasian 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can go for it.
      We are already 3 generations ahead and because lenovo switched to ultra low voltage, the newest model's performance still doesn't surpass the t430's...
      T430 typical model($250): Core i5 - 3320M (2.6GHz clock, 3.3GHz turbo)
      T460 typical model($800): Core i5 - 6200U (2.3GHz clock, 2.9GHz turbo)
      Of course, it's not an apples to apples comparison (the newer models have better battery life), but given that it'll be one less computer on the dumpster (favor to nature) and less than half the price, 2 replacement batteries will be well worth it.

    hi Lisa, I am an engineering student starting college soon. I was wondering if you could advise me whether the X230 is powerful enough to run engineering softwares like CAD,MATLAB, Java script program. If not, should I be eyeing the W series instead?

    Great awesome review. Does this has intel WiDi...there are different option to select from Lenovo while customizing like "Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 AGN" or Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200 (2x2 BGN). Selecting any of these provides me intel WiDi option? Or are there any other alternatives for WiDi?

    This beats any ultrabook IMO, it has a full fledge notebook cpu instead of a ulv, which makes a huge difference, even if it's not as thin.

    I decided to go with the ThinkPad for the durability. I'm definitely getting an ssd for it, but I can't decide if I should get an msata ssd so I can leave the 500gb hdd in the laptop OR get a samsung 830 and an external enclosure for the hdd. I'm going to be using it mostly for music production which requires running multiple tracks and plugins simultaneously.
    Any thoughts on whether I should go with the msata as opposed to a sata 3 ssd? Would I noticed a difference in performance at all?

    Does anyone know where I can get a full computer breakdown? I'm trying to figure out all the keyboard shortcuts, what each and every key does on the mouse swipe pad... the whole shebang. obviously I'm not very familiar with computers so any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Yeah, a real bummer when there's no HDMI or an fully res screen.
    IPS screen is nice though. Something they do't offer on the T4xxs

    From Lenovo, you can get it with Win7 or Win8 at no extra cost. (Unless you're upgrade to a pro version)

    I didn't see a review for a T420s on your channel. I was wondering if you know how much thicker then x230 is than the T420s? Looks a little bit thicker.

    TH-cam and movies studios have become more draconian about showing TH-cam movie trailers in a TH-cam video. Ours demoed Adobe Flash playback by showing a movie trailer and it thus was flagged by the YT copyright robot. So we had to re-upload without that movie trailer segment.

    alright so a few questions: what do you think of the screen size? would it be good for long-term use? Also, how does typing feel for you? In another review I saw the guy mention how his palms didn't rest properly because there wasn't enough space.
