  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad X270, the refresh of Lenovo’s smallest traditional business laptop. The X270 replaces the X260 in Lenovo’s 12.5” Ultrabook lineup, and it’s been refreshed with Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake dual core, 15 watt CPUs and Intel HD 620 graphics. It gains a USB-C port and for a portable this small, it packs a lot of ports including Ethernet, HDMI and a dock connector. The 2.9 lb. /1.3kg notebook has Lenovo’s usual excellent backlit keyboard, an MS Precision trackpad, optional LTE 4G and a fingerprint scanner.
The Bridge battery system is back with an internal 23 WHr battery and your choice of 3 removable batteries, the largest of which is 72 WHr and allows for extremely long runtimes. The machine is available with a 1366 x 768 TN panel or a 1920 x 1080 IPS display (both are matte and non-touch). Pricing starts around $800, depending on current Lenovo specials.

thank you for the review, literally just bought the last X270 and now they're sold out (at least for now), it was only available with the TN display, has to be the worst thing about this laptop but for the price i decided to keep it, have to say, it is much nicer than i expected, very smooth for general purpose use, it has a very nice look to it too, not what i expected, best part by far is how solid it feels and the keyboard, battery life seems excellent, matter of fact i have set the charging threshold set to 80% since i rarely use it for 10-12 hours straight, track-pad could improve but all and all it is a solid laptop.

It's so nice. That classic 90's boxy, black, non flashy laptop. Wish they made a version with a little higher specs, like closer to the LEGION Y520. I want a small laptop like this, great old fashion feeling best laptop keyboard, not flashy. Just a classic looking laptop, for a everyday laptop, that can be used by consumers, not just for the workers.

No it's not. Especially if you use bloated garbage like firefox. Even Windows 7 minimal processes running youre looking at around 1 gb or RAM gone already. Firefox uses ~500mb + like an additional 100 per tab. 4 GB is not enough unless you use linux and or non trash web browsers/media players (like VLC, as in, VLC is trash too.)

I'm really impressed how Lenovo design Thinkpad series, especially the X series that have bridge battery system. They're using at least intel Core i5, some series just like X270 even have Core i7 inside it, which means it will need some space for the cooling system. But they use like almost 50% of the entire bottom panel just for the battery ( internal and external ).
And here is the thing, it still has a PCIe old slot ( on the left side, the wide one, not the M.2 ), it's wide for sure. More over it still has some upgradeability ( RAM, NVMe, Wifi Card ) and internal GSM modem. I can't believe how efficient they designed the motherboard for a Core i5/i7 Processor machine. It's very small and compact, yet also has all basic upgradeability. That's why I really love thinkpad, but I don't have enough money to buy one.

I'm pretty sure everyone knew the x270 wasnt going to change much. even the x250 users agreed. thinkpads is pretty predictive, they focus on reliability and durability, thats why many conpanies still use them. good tip: buy the base model with 1080p screen and upgrade ssd and ram with aftermarket parts. if you need the warranty, simply swap back to oem parts before shipping.

Upgrading SSD is no brainer but most people wouldn't know the difference. You also get a free external hard drive out of it (or other internal 500GB hdd). Ram could also be good but sometimes it is a wash or even more expensive given the price of ram these days.

I am still using my ThinkPad X201. It still runs perfectly with no issues. I have the docking station and using the computer with a 1080p monitor along with the laptop screen. I only upgraded the hard drive to a Samsung SSD 500gb a couple years ago which made the laptop seem 10 times quicker. Overall it is great for travelling. I just pop it in my old IBM branded X60 leather ThinkPad bag. Still deciding if I want to upgrade to the X270. Maybe it's time to retire the X201 after 6 years of service.

I bought one from an IT charity on eBay for £135. Like yours, only with the regular original slim battery, 8 GB ram, 250GB NVME non1080p screen. I won't upgrade my screen to 1080p because I don't want everything my 24 inch home monitor has crammed into a screen that's 10+ inches shorter. I have upgraded to 16 GB ram, replaced the NVME with a 500GB I had laying around and I bought a genuine new 72 wh replacement battery and I re-pasted the CPU/GPU. Chinese generic batteries are NOT good, I had nothing but massive performance problems with it. I love this laptop.

First of all thanks for the review. I am trying to buy a laptop for my father for a couple of weeks and have watched almost all of your recent reviews and smackdowns, they helped me a lot. Finally I am a bit confused b/w zenbook series ux330ua and zenbook flip ux360uak-dq240t (touch screen main difference). He isn't going to open many applications or chrome tabs at the same time. And his primary requirement would be, if he clicks on the icon, it should open as fast as possible. Same goes for
the touch screen, that it should be smooth, responsive, and sturdy. But there's no way for me to confirm this. I live in a remote town, Shujalpur, in India, so we don't have any laptop outlets here, or any high range phone outlets for that matter. Even, none of the stores in our whole state has a piece, for demo purposes of touch screen. Could you please make a video, reviewing ux360uak or atleast give a basic idea about touch screen? Again, thanks a lot for videos, really appreciate your reviews and smackdowns.

Thanks for the review Lisa.. I just purchased this laptop..
Anyone know how to find out when it is 100% fully charged while charging when the laptop is turned off? There is no LED indicator that “says” it is fully charged.
    Thank you.

i would suggest you wait until the next X series thinkpad, mostly because it is the only one that lenovo hasn't update the design already, while the t470 has been updated already even after the t460 update.

Just curious ! Is there any Lenovo Thinkpad 14" with two m.2 slots ( 1 for boot drive & 1 for storage ) or may be 1 m.2 + 2.5" drive slot ?? If yes i may think to upgrade. More over i use AutoCad 3D and solid works a lot. Is it ok to have i7 7200U or should i opt for 7700HQ. ?

After finding a refurbished X270 for 340$ (305$ exclusive tax) I switched to the X270 from an E330, and the difference is massive.
Even though the keyboard is lacking compared, the X270 is not a pile of plastic, which the E330 feels like, the light weight ultra portability is a pleasure. It also feels like it can withstand more extreme conditions, and is overall a fantastic machine.
I got mine with the extended battery, so I can go days without plugging it in.

I've had Macbook Pros, and recently purchased the Lenovo Legion, but received a Thinkpad x121e for free. Of all of the I've only liked the Thinkpad. But obviously it's a bit dated. Is this comparable to the x121e in terms of form factor and durability?
