Y’all have opinions on what y’all liked or didn’t like or chemicals that might be harmful to others hair. None of it was definite because our hair is effected by our diets, environment, genetics, product amount & application. Just so much. So I think you and a lot of others did great & have been doing great. I’m sick of trends

    • @selwatchesyt
      @selwatchesyt ปีที่แล้ว +17

I agree with what you’re saying about different haircare methods working for different people but it’s not a question about whether chemicals in relaxers are toxic. The CDC did a long term study that showed that black women are significantly more likely to get fibroids, breast and uterine cancers due to using relaxers. Yes, there are chemicals in everything but the chemicals in relaxers are more toxic than other products. The Environmental Working Group has research about large companies using more toxic chemicals in black haircare products bc it’s cheaper than safer ingredients. There is even a class action lawsuit in the works against all the relaxer brands. These stories have been making headlines for the past 2 years but tbh I’m not hearing any noise about it in the black haircare community which is disturbing to say the least. Sorry for the huge psa add on, I care about our community and everyone having a blaisé attitude about using relaxers scare me.

@@DeeDeeKarol I don't believe Cee Cee was talking about the Natural Hair Movement but rather some trends that are either circulating solely for views like the rice water challenge or are ultimately connected to things like proximity to wh(i)teness; obsession with length, or looser textured hair, for example. I would call the present Natural Hair Movement as more of a renaissance as during and before the 60s and 70s there had been movements to accept black hair and black beauty. Black people, even after slavery were not allowed to have our natural hair uncovered or fashioned in traditional styles within the eye of wh(i)te folk as it was concerned a sign of our Blackness and was deemed offensive. Fast forward and we have higher cancer rates among Black women because that group is heavily pressured to alter their hair to better assimilate into wh(i)te culture. P.S. I have nothing against those who chose to chemically alter their hair. I was want us to share knowledge with each other and be good to each other while we're each finding our own way when it comes to how we identify and care for our hair. It's all love.

Girl why did I find out that influencers with similar hair as me were PERMING their edges to get them to stay down but we’re not telling people that. Then the loose curl girlies of course it worked for them without perms. It’s become the baseline… young black girls with 4c hair have been on social media calling their hair ugly because it doesn’t look like the natural hair that advertised everywhere. TV, magazines, social media ext… this is not a hate post but it makes it even worse when people with type 2 matted hair are claiming they’re type 4

I definitely feel there's a looooot of ideas as well as shame for previous ideas if that makes sense? It makes everything so confusing and tiring ti implement. I remember in high school and college I used to just wet my hair before school, then put coconut oil on it, put in a bun and go. My hair grew a lot at the time, most likely from the moisture and that my scalp wasnt dry. I remember though, one year, a lot of TH-camrs were saying that you shouldn't use coconut oil anymore. Since then I stopped using it and my hair hasn't really gotten longer or retained length since. I think Im going to go back to that regimen. Will, you’re absolutely right. I did the 30 day detox(no raw oils, no raw butters) and shared in the official group with the original owners and people were attacking me for using water based Ayurvedic remedies. That mean girl undertone is coming from the originators of that movement, I promise you. I went natural in 2015 and then locked in in 2018. You can hear what people on your screen say, but overall you need to find someone to help you through your journey, even if it's once in a while, and you have a good hand on how to style and treat your hair. I looked high and low for my natural stylist for FIVE YEARS!! I love her and am so grateful I found her. There's more work into your hair than the big chop, and people don't wanna hear that. They want the smoke and mirrors.

This was a fantastic video to watch during my lunch break ❤️. Thank you for speaking what I feel is some serious truth Will. Honestly, it's so easy to get swept up in the trends thinking " oh so and so said it worked so maybe it will help."
At the end of the day, just like you check those nutrition labels, we should be checking ingredient lists and making informed decisions based on our own personal experiences.
My hair, for some reason, always stalls out right above my breasts. I have been obsessed with trying to grow my hair out and for what?!? Because the girlies love a length check?
I have not had a silk press in over a decade and for what?! Because people despise heat, until the newest hairdryer comes on the market.

Someone said our self hate is a business and honestly it is
Companies know that ppl with natural hair especially type 4 natural hair have difficulty growing it their hair
So they sell all these gimmicky products and trends to feed into that
I've been natural for 7 years and have mid back hair with type 4 hair
Earlier in my hair journey I was sucked into all the gimmicks and then during the pandemic I reduced my products to 5 products and lived in protective styles
Ppl want instant results and HAIR DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT for anyone with any kind of hair

Yes, DO YOU! Rice water and limited oil and butters work for MY hair type. However, it didn't work for my sister and we have the same parents! Everything doesn't work for everybody. I do however make my own rice water (I never buy the commercial stuff), so maybe that makes a difference but you're right ppl really try to come after you when what you do for your hair and it doesn't work for them. As Black people have become informed about our hair, a lot of things like: scalp condition, hair texture, porosity, ph balance, etc. play into the mix, so I think ppl should take natural hair videos as suggestions and play around and find what works for them. Thanks for the video! 😊

Thanks for your content. I believe that some of the reasons why some are so obsessed with length is because of insecurities due to brainwashing from childhood i.e. being told that they cannot grow long hair due to genetics, or even being made fun of for having short hair, social media, always seeing certain others flopping and throwing their hair around with such ease and security and wishing that they had the hair to do the same. Not to mention the constant stereotyping depicting short, nappy and unruly hair as ugly. A lot of men contribute to the stigma by proclaiming that they prefer women with long hair, etc. It's very unfortunate and some women go to ridiculous extremes i.e. wearing braids and weaves reaching past their knees when their actual hair is neck length. Looks really fake. And all that does is confirm insecurities.

The obsession with hair growth is weird to me because scalp care doesn't get nearly as much attention when scalp care is vital for hair health and, therefore, hair growth,. I have a really sensitive dry scalp and I had the worst flare up of my life about 2 weeks ago. That sent me searching for scalp products, which I'd never really done before. Majority of what I saw only regarded scalp care in relation to growth (hair growth oils and such). It seems counterproductive for the industry to push growth products while largely ignoring scalp maintenance.

My hair has always been long, thick, and “unruly.” I was given relaxers growing up but because no one was doing the upkeep, my hair started breaking off quickly. My sister gave me a sizable chop when I was in 8th grade and I absolutely loved it. I kept going shorter and shorter and even had an undercut at one point. Then I got into wigs and by the time I graduated, people didn’t know what my real hair looked like or had never seen it and thought I was bald. I wasn’t 😂 I just kept letting my hair grow without even knowing how to really care for it. My last salon hair cut was in 2018 and my hair is around 16-18” and I hate it. I go through product quickly, it’s getting more expensive, and I don’t straighten my hair anymore because it takes so, so long. My family was the type that assigned beauty to hair length so they never want me to cut my hair; for a long time I felt obligated to keep it long and still have yet to cut it again. But the way things are going…. I’m so over it.
