I kinda get that feeling he described, when he started running, and i can't wait for VR to try out for myself, not to mention along with my friends!
Thrill, I just want to add up one thing. You said "It failed as a proof of concept". But worked brilliantly as exactly that - proof of concept. You assembled everything together and it worked to the level you were trying to achieve. It doesn't matter at all if the software was not working together, it doesn't matter if some hardware parts were falling off during it - you were trying to prove that this is possible, this can be done with some time and dedication, maybe even to an easy to set up and use extend. All the "ifs" are out of the question when you just try to show "this is possible". And your results are astonishing

legitimate companies will work on open standards. then Apple will come along 3 years later and shit all over them. and for some reason, Apple will win.
The disgusting part is the company investing the most into making a world that just works cohesively is Meta...and their idea of what a virtual world is like...yeah it's ugly.
would be super damn awesome just to have one bit of software for all of vr. Like currently just with few stuff I need to run: -steamvr -vive console -vive wireless -bhaptics -fpsvr for my vr to work, and good god 1 is enough because the software always causes issues. I couldnt imagine needing to run more On the other hand just running steamvr would be awesome
@@cate01a we already have that in openxr.. but games have to be written to use it, rather than proprietary APIs from Valve and Oculus . Some games use openxr already, like Population One for example
It’s crazy to think if companies really put everything into vr we could have the oasis. If you yourself can do it imagine what a large team could accomplish.
the problem is making it affordable for everyone and make the technology small so people have space to put in their homes. We could probably make an extremely realistic vr game like the oasis but it would be a waste of time because they’d probably have to make some sort of huge and expensive setup which would be hard to sell and make profit.
@@kami_dred7319 I like to think that we'll be pretty close to the Oasis in 25 years. But if Meta is still running the show it'll be like what the actual bad guys of Ready Player One wanted to turn the Oasis into
@markjvp like, i highly doubt there can be much of a hub for vr as a whole, BUT realistically speaking you might see platforms such as steam or epic (if they get heavily into vr) build out there platform homes such as steamvr home, to be something more akin to a hub, and make them into a much more desirable thing that people want to use. Like it kinda seems to me like that could be a really good marketing tool for getting people onto your vr platform.
Man that's cool, so basically you're saying the biggest issue is lack of content and device compatibility with haptics and other accessories. Either way, seeing how much the big companies are getting into vr, ar and mixed, it seems those problems won't be around much longer if the companies actually want to expand vr
Dude I am so happy that I will still be young when this shit fixes itself, I love ready player one but I hated the idea of being in my 40s when it finally comes to fruition.
Even though it had its hangups, the fact that it all cohesively worked for even just a few minutes is a huge success in my opinion. You took baby steps so others may walk or even run in the future with this tech! Great work! 👍
7:33 I think this is a perfectly plausible reaction considering how Avatar starts. Jake is put into the body of the Na’vi, acknowledges his existence in it for a moment, and sprints out the door. Stops to smell the air, dig his toes into the ground, pure bliss. Granted he was excited to have working legs again but. Close enough
Thrillseeker: pioneer of the virtual future. Mega props to actually giving this a go just to see how far we can currently get. Fantastic video. I kind of hope this is one of those things where we look back at this video and go "wow look how rough things used to be". VR already has come a long way since my original janky controllerless Devkit 2 that I had to directly load games into before wearing. More than anything I hope we see a renaissance in VR content though. I think the tech is a matter of time if there's stuff to engage with in the hardware.
Yeah, this is actually amazing, like imagine being in battle talent or something, you would be feeling every single slice, the strain of swinging a sword, the grip, and it would be very cool!
That's what I think the real metaverse will be. Not a walled garden owned by one company, but as a set of standards to easily move between different virtual spaces.
I absolutely love what you're doing for VR industry! You give a 100% unbiased reviews past, present and, future of VR gaming. Why, you don't have at least a million subscribers is beyond me! Keep up the good work! It's an awesome channel! 🤘

it will exist someday. i cant tell if im dreading it or welcoming it. also what the fuck was the movie its like they skimmed the back cover and made the movie from there
@@ThrillSeekerVR so that's not a no regarding the sex doll being part of the second attempt at this. You did say in this video that you're working on a second attempt with some extra stuff ;)
I call this a success, why? - Took several pieces of hardware that were made by several companies without thinking about one another working together. - Modded and added programs and probably more to get things working with the hardware. - You even took glitches and bugs and found a quick fix and work around. - Got everything working even for a short time being close to Ready Player One without the full prepared and ready for games, out of the box tech. You're one of the first or maybe only to experience the closeness of Ready Player One.
This is why I love thrillseeker, his ability to use not just his words but his whole body language, perfect videoes+pictures and voice to describe how things felt and was for that moment. This makes us as viewers really understand a whole lot better what he is doing/feeling and kind of makes us feel the same things. (atleast for me)
I have a setup like this. He's got more patience than I. I've used it like 3 times. It's too much of a hassle. So I just use the XTAL 8K at my simulator for MS flight simulator. Also, I don't trust ThrillSeeker. He tends to be on the hyperbolic end of the spectrum.
I’ve been waiting for this video from you for so long now. Once software support actually works together in just a few more years this will be a giant shift.
This is honestly amazing, please keep making this kind of content. You are pushing us forward, all it takes is the right corpo or dev noticing your videos and resolving to fix the compatibility issues with the most mainstream products and we will most definitely be there, wherever there may be.
This is fascinating! I’m looking forward to the next step in your experiment. Keep up the amazing work! Not only do you talk about the tech but I love the philosophical approach you bring to the content.
Almost all the friction is removed if you consider a full suit with tracking, haptics, gloves and boots built in - that will be a good direction, then you will have multiple vendors of suits competing in the space. Standards here could ensure compatibility. Barring that, an API broker style middle-ware layer would be the only thing that made sense. Cool stuff
Way back in the day when computers were fresh and new you had the same exact problem. No product worked on other systems. The IT conglomerate created a VERY good solution: The OSI model. A framework or physical device communication with seven layers. The problem here is very similar. We need a VR OSI Model.
I would recommend.... using the OSI model! LOL The transport (4) and session (5) layers seem the most important to get the devices talking with each other, and then the presentation layer (6) would need an industry agreed upon common set of interactions that the application layer can call, and presentation does the translation from common calls to hardware specific functions.
This is fascinating! Thank you for doing this video and experiment! I did an interview with a local VR gaming arcade and they showed me their most immersive setup and it was pretty amazing but I could see we're still a ways from total immersion but not TOO far away. From a guy that was present and played the commodore and Atari and dreamed of a real Holodeck this is all just....WOW
hands down one of the best channels about vr on youtube , thanks for the videos and all the effort you put here and on helping building the vr community
I feel like if you had some dedicated game engine for VR that natively supported the various devices that would handle the issue of compatibility well. Issue is of course making a game engine that actually does that in a seem less robust and modular way. It’s honestly a bit like self driving cars. It we made the road with self driving cars in mind (and no human driven vehicles) we could simplify their design by an impressive margin. It’s through the need to interact with 1000+ things that these sort of things become needlessly complicated and end up falling apart conceptually.
Just imagine in 4 - 5 years when this is the norm! It's going to be incredible to see how this complete immersive technology will begin to shift societies understanding of reality.
Wow, ThrillSeeker is KING of VR content. Stoked for version 2! Your setup is extremely impressive given what you talked about with the state of the industry.
Dude! Thank you so much for putting this together! I know it's taking along time money and effort but it's crazy to think your man bringing VR to the mass's well done! I really hope dev's on all level's see your opinion and forward such limits and push what it is you have found. Peace
love that finally somebody tooked the chance to build the setup showing us what currently is possible and what is missing to become ready player 1 world
A note of the Friction: In ready player one, most users don't actually wear all of that gear. The basic oasis set is just gloves and a headset. What wade puts on is equivalent to the setup you donned, the highest tech, most immersive setup money can buy. He puts on all of that gear to become fully immersed, but the whole concept of VR goes big with the release of the Oasis, the platform that unites the hardware. So you're basically spot on with what needs to happen. Great video Thrill!
This right here, when I talk about VR to non-VR players, they always come back to "ill play it when its like ready player one". I'm like... it's already there... They don't realize that not everyone had a full body tracker....
@@doperegistry8504 Exactly, and not everybody wanted one either. Some people want to just casually play some games, other people want to immerse their entire reality into the Oasis. The former you can do right now, but the later is still in the works
I feel that, even if you partially failed the attempt, this video is going to add momentum and awareness to VR. It shows what we need to achieve the VR experience. Here is to bringing the VR future closer
this is the future of gaming. the people ARE ready. the gimmicky aspect of it is what pushes people away from VR. when it’s at this level for the standard of VR, we’ll have that oasis I’m sure. what an exciting video & proof it can be done. the future is gonna be crazy, and you’re a pioneer ThrillSeeker. wow.
INSANE! You are probably the only person in the world to get it all hacked together and experience this :O Your feedback and reactions are immense. --- I joined you on patreon just for this video! :) (ironically enough, i haven't even had my VR setup operational for the past ~2 years, only have OG rift)
I've always stood by the idea that RPO's VR is way more accessible than people give it credit for. A headset, a haptic suit, an omni-treadmil and gloves. We can absolutely achieve this in the next few decades and beyond. That being said, I'm still faintly amused at VR smell solutions. Of all all the senses to have in VR, an in-depth smell system sounds like fluff at best. I mean, really think it through, what kind of smells will the average video game have? Burning fuel and gunpowder? Blood and corpses? Cooked meat? Are they really ones you want to get a whiff of all the time?
Man, that's crazy! Maybe companies should collaborate and develop single fully immersive VR solution in order to provide out-of-box experience. Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this video!
This is so cool this needs to happen but like i had another idea to add into it, ready player one doesn't do this but i feel like it would be more realistic, i think the ground that you walk on should be able to lower or rise like your walking up stairs or walking down stairs or a mountain.
I can't imagine a way it won't always be awkward to make some transitions in vr. Like, imagine going from running to driving, you'll basically have to get unstrapped, remove your headset and climb into your driving rig.
Dude, you make some amazing content about this stuff! I just recently found your channel, and just the way you convey things in your videos... They suck me in more than any other VR content creator I know. The background music is good, the cuts are great, the way you explain things is also great. I'm glad I found your channel man! Keep up the great work. In terms of this video, that is crazy you put all that together and got it all to work. I can only imagine the level of immersion you experienced and I'm kinda jealous! When I first tried VR, I was blown away by how immersive it was, and still get that WOW moment pretty often when playing things like a heavily modded Skyrim VR. But to have full body tracking with haptics everywhere must have been INSANE! I really feel VR is the most immersive way to play games, and i hope that one day hardware like this can become affordable and that it all works together seamlessly. I also hope more AAA games come to VR, or more big games get adapted for VR (in a decent manner) cuz right now a lot of games for VR just feel like large tech demos. I hope we get more games like half-life Alyx, and that one day there is integration for the kind of hardware you used in the video. That would revolutionize gaming in such an incredible way! Although your probably right in saying people would never go outside or leave their house. But I already don't so this is all just a plus for me haha
Super cool of you to push the envelope and see where the rough parts are. Now we need to add some oil to the cogs in the upcoming years as the industry and it'll be pretty awesome. Kudos!
Top stuff! I love the idea of VR more than the reality currently. My most immersive experiences have been with traditional gaming controllers, because they offer more consistency than hand movement controllers which often break the immersion due to poor tracking. When it works well its incredible, but often it can be completely exhausting and often nausea inducing. I will watch your Ready Player One project progress with interest!!
Meta getting into VR hardware with such intensity would eventually solve these issues. Bro, a full body haptic suit, gloves, smell device( not sure what the name was), and a big structure to mount yourself onto, all of these should be produced by one company. This is like a million dollar startup idea. Why is it still not out there?
Amazing to see you go through this and be able to discuss the experience. Truly incredible work! From my perspective it will all be miniaturization and ease of use to reduce the friction and we will certainly get there, just how long we will have to wait is the question.
I'm moderately adventurous and have spent alot of time outdoors exploring. I also live in South Africa with it's amazing topographical- and biodiversity. I also love VR... it will have to go a very long way before I'll view it as more than a neet distraction or a medium for experimenting. The weirdest thing however, is that even though I'm a very outgoing person IRL I find it next to impossible to speak in somethings like VRchat!
Why do you think that is? Just curious since I'm the opposite side of the spectrum. I'm pretty introverted and get stressed out talking to new people sometimes, so I'm hoping when I get a VR headset I'll be able to talk to people better in VRChat since they're strangers on the Internet I don't have to ever see again if I wanted, so less is at stake.
If you are Afrikaans it may be that you simply feel a little out of place amongst international folks. Your age also may have something to do with it. I'm getting older and I think I no longer have the energy to interact with the wide range of ages you get in apps like VRChat. I tend to stick to single player games in VR and I'm sure I'm missing out but perhaps the right app/game may just have to come along to pull me into multiplayer interaction.
NeosVR has been the closest program I've had to get all the support for my current hardware on one app. Even then, it really depends if the creators of the current world you are in bothered to add the haptics correctly, or even had the ability to test them. Standardization for VR haptic devices is really a must going forward.
The issue is that you're looking at 1% adoption inside of what is already a niche market. There's just no real incentive to do it. Vest makers release an API/SDK and it's up to software developers to adopt it if they choose, which most don't because it isn't even worth the effort to code support in most cases.
one of the coolest videos I've seen on TH-cam in a long time. Honestly no clue how something like this isn't in the millions view wise, honestly at this point you might as well have your mask just say "player one" across it for how many vr-related technologies you've tested.
Man, I am excitedly waiting for larger companies to invest heavily into VR. The amount of things that are available right now is great and I would like to see the expansion of the industry. As an example, I would love to get an owo vest but there is so little it is currently compatible with. Money is also a factor, but that is just an eventuality.
Congrats on your grand experiment glad you got as far as you did. Hopefully in the coming years companies can come up with an all in one package solution that developers can get behind. Unfortunately the price point would probably have to be less than a grand for consumers to get behind it.
Wasn't such an awesome setup rather expensive in Ready Player One (the book) too? So even if remaining expensive, it would not be all that different from the book. And it doesn't necessarily need _everyone_ to get behind it, but enough people that developers support it would be helpful. Could also work by hardware lasting a long time so consumers can build up a nice setup over a long time period.
The idea of the electronic suit was banging in my head for like 2 years, your video inspired me to finally take on a project and do some initial prototypes and research. I doubt I'll sell it because of all the red tape that comes with electro-stimulating devices. It would be open source kit probably. I have an experience with designing, testing and making electronics, if one is reading this and has experience in mechanics, electronics, biology, software, etc. consider replaying to this comment please. I'm open to collaboration on this project because that way it will happen faster cause I obviously can't work on this full time. I'm not a native speaker btw. but I think it won't be an issue.
I feel like for the VR "laws of physics" as you mentioned, we could have an application/medium that developers can use to develop and publish games on, sorta like what Roblox and other platforms do. That way, the initial app that you start up could control all the games to a degree where everything feels consistent. I may have a new project on my hands...
just getting my headset to work smoothly in the simulation games I play is a fking NIGHTMARE. I cannot even imagine what it takes getting all that setup.
This seems really awesome! I hope our technology advances to a point where we can be in alternate virtual wolds as realistic as the real one as an average consumer! The only thing I'm afraid of is that once people are in they might not care as much to improve our actual reality. We should look to always be improving but having all your senses controlled through one System could be very dangerous and addictive really fast if there aren't posed any restriction on the technology.
Ur really the only one who could do it and u Did it congrats. How long do u think Player One experience will take to reach the broad audience? can we expect 5 years with all the support and the hype of metaverse?
The experience from the movie won't exist for decades. There is no Oasis and you couldn't build that in 5 years with every developer from every game company working on it together. The hardware is nowhere near where it needs to be, the software doesn't exist, and we're likely looking at decades before it does.
I haven't even experienced a VR headset IN MY ENTIRE LIFE, I just can't afford even the cheapest one, but I've been here watching and expecting, crying with your videos for something I can't even experience myself... but this is another level, I am mesmerized, I just... wow.
8:15. This is terrifying. I've been addicted to video games before but something this immersive combined with genuinely great games could cause some actual problems for me and even those with more self control. I sense some legitimate problems being caused for society in general due to VR in the future...and it being being common for people to not care about school, jobs, maintaining health, and instead earning a living through exchanging in-game currencies. We already see this on a smaller scale with video games now but idk it freaks me out and excites me at the same time.
I feel that the only way to reach 100% immersion in a virtual world would have to be a device that would be able to stimulate any sense the brain could receive directly in it, as well as having to take control of the actual nervous system of the body so that you could (theoretically) be in a dream like state where you could be completely immersed in a world and even forget reality exists. What I described is just the Nervegear, if this type of technology existed in todays world the only outcome that would come out of it is humanity itself never wanting to leave the virtual world and leading to its extinction. Or the people with the most power in the world would create a dystopia where everyone else on the planet would be their slaves or paid workers, in which, the people with power would just spend nearly their whole lives in a virtual world and keep doing that for all future generations until inevitable extinction of humanity comes. Obviously this is theoretical but it seems very possible if this scenario happened imo.
We already hava tiny robots 10micron. Whats left is reducting size to 2microns and making it autonomous, uses ultrasound to simulate the brain And runs on biofuel. It can be injected or drank
> if this type of technology existed in todays world the only outcome that would come out of it is humanity itself never wanting to leave the virtual world and leading to its extinction. ??? Do people not already want to never leave the virtual world? This does not lead to extinction, though, because people still need to eat and make money to afford shelter and hardware upgrades and such. More immersive VR does not solve the fundamental problem of needing to go back to the physical world to maintain oneself.
It just has preloaded scent cartridges and little fans. You get a few scents and that's it. It isn't able to paint scents using primary smells to create thousands of different experiences or anything of that nature.
Consider using more of your b-roll, and filming some interviews, and footage of you directly addressing the camera, and making this a short documentary (eg. 30mis - 40mins). It's good content, and will rack up millions of views.
This came up in my reccomended and I had to watch it I love Thrills videos and this one was amazing. I am so excited for the future of VR and I hope attempt 2 works better! I am also intrested, How does the smell hardware actually work?
I love VR, although I get motion sickness quite easy. The hardware is amazing, but the software is so lagging behind. I really hope developers start making amazing VR games soon, because we just have a handfull of great games. And if there is nothing to do in VR, it does not matter how good your gear is.
I've been thinking about whether this type of thing would work with our current software for a while and it is amazing to see you turn my thoughts into reality. Although, I think people will stay inside anyways in Florida at least with how hot it is.😵
Thank you! When you came out of your experience you said the words that mostly matter. "I don´t think that people are ready for this." On one hand, this points to the exact problem of this type of experience ... but on the other hand, it also shows what kind of problem your perspective has with this experience ... please be sure to remember what reality is. The disgusting part is the company investing the most into making a world that just works cohesively is Meta...and their idea of what a virtual world is like...yeah it's ugly.
would be super damn awesome just to have one bit of software for all of vr. Like currently just with few stuff I need to run:
-steamvr
-vive console
-vive wireless
-bhaptics
-fpsvr
for my vr to work, and good god 1 is enough because the software always causes issues. I couldnt imagine needing to run more
On the other hand just running steamvr would be awesome
@@cate01a we already have that in openxr.. but games have to be written to use it, rather than proprietary APIs from Valve and Oculus . Some games use openxr already, like Population One for example
Oh yes they definitely are watching. There's some people's jobs do nothing but that. If this to happen it's all about the legalities
But if Meta is still running the show it'll be like what the actual bad guys of Ready Player One wanted to turn the Oasis into
@@StupidNSimplesns 25 years is a bit much. I would say like 15 years
@markjvp In other words, a better vrchat lol
Well running apparently feels more like slipping in style.
We are so close
How much all those costs?
Dude I am so happy that I will still be young when this shit fixes itself, I love ready player one but I hated the idea of being in my 40s when it finally comes to fruition.

Thank for all the hard work in putting this video together. So exciting to see what the future could potentially hold
You remember what happened in Avatar?
As a double leg amputee I would do the same thing lol!

It would be cool if Unreal Engine and Unity starts making standards for VR games.

Have to say that, Thrill, you are great in story telling. I've gotten emotional watching a guy play games in VR.
LOL
The transport (4) and session (5) layers seem the most important to get the devices talking with each other, and then the presentation layer (6) would need an industry agreed upon common set of interactions that the application layer can call, and presentation does the translation from common calls to hardware specific functions.
Looks like I found the network engineers!😊

I feel like if you had some dedicated game engine for VR that natively supported the various devices that would handle the issue of compatibility well.
Issue is of course making a game engine that actually does that in a seem less robust and modular way.
It’s honestly a bit like self driving cars. It we made the road with self driving cars in mind (and no human driven vehicles) we could simplify their design by an impressive margin. It’s through the need to interact with 1000+ things that these sort of things become needlessly complicated and end up falling apart conceptually.

This video is SO good
It’s unbelievable how far technology has gone.

(ironically enough, i haven't even had my VR setup operational for the past ~2 years, only have OG rift)
Really profound.
You and the video...profound. Next level. You deserve a million views on this.

I can't imagine a way it won't always be awkward to make some transitions in vr. Like, imagine going from running to driving, you'll basically have to get unstrapped, remove your headset and climb into your driving rig.
This is some real hype. Cant wait to see what the future brings.
Always the best VR user on TH-cam, hope you keep growing as a content creator!
Crazy man, thank you for putting all of this together. Incredible dedication to satisfy our curiosity. You are a true pioneer of the VR.
Kudos!
I hope to one day get a setup like this and run outer wilds like this. That would be incredible
VR is one of those things you can't stop thinking about how it will evolve and turn out as the future unfolds
Because people don’t have enough money to buy it. No one will build a system that won’t sell.
Amazing to see you go through this and be able to discuss the experience. Truly incredible work! From my perspective it will all be miniaturization and ease of use to reduce the friction and we will certainly get there, just how long we will have to wait is the question.
You’re a pioneer sir! Don’t stop giving us hope & inspiration!
Next we need fans in multiple directions to simulate wind and also moving through air
one of the coolest videos I've seen on TH-cam in a long time.
I think open source is the true way
Wasn't such an awesome setup rather expensive in Ready Player One (the book) too?
Awesome video! Real fun idea and great execution! We can't wait for more AAA game devs to dive into VR!
Probably in 5 years it will exist and be more seemless, but still very expensive. So probably not for 10 years when a large chunk of users have it
The experience from the movie won't exist for decades.
The first paragraph is essentially the entire plot of Ready Player Two.
Read on optogenetics
We already hava tiny robots 10micron.
Whats left is reducting size to 2microns and making it autonomous, uses ultrasound to simulate the brain
And runs on biofuel. It can be injected or drank
I was just talking about this last night and see this video and comment today 💀
> if this type of technology existed in todays world the only outcome that would come out of it is humanity itself never wanting to leave the virtual world and leading to its extinction.
???
Do people not already want to never leave the virtual world? This does not lead to extinction, though, because people still need to eat and make money to afford shelter and hardware upgrades and such. More immersive VR does not solve the fundamental problem of needing to go back to the physical world to maintain oneself.
I'm more curious about the scent module, and how it actually works. is there a way we could get an in-depth video covering that?
It just has preloaded scent cartridges and little fans. You get a few scents and that's it. It isn't able to paint scents using primary smells to create thousands of different experiences or anything of that nature.
@@Thezuule1 i have thought about that many times. that would be a dream come true
