I lived in South Africa for six years....I am Australian. I was also in South Africa in November 2017. As long as you use common sense in terms of personal security you will be fine. It’s an AMAZING country. It is Africa but highly developed. The first success heart transplant was done in a South Africa in Capetown. You could use any banks ATM’s to draw money from your account in South Africa years before that technology was available in Australia. South Africa is going through change that will take generations before she fully stabilises. I love that country! Now jump in a plane and go!

Psh, ignore all of the pessimistic people. Unfortunately we have to make the best of our circumstances. If you know it's an unsafe area then take precautions. There's no reason whatsoever not to go anywhere just because you might not be safe. As a tourist just never flash your flashy belongings that might have a high street value. Phones, cameras, wallets. If you go hiking or jogging do not go with those belongings. There will always be private security around no matter where in SA you travel - especially urban areas. Our private security, their efficiency and their professionalism, makes up for everything that the police lack.

South Africa will be even much better under the EFF government or when the EFF gain more political power, which will be the case after 2019 elections. The expropriation of land without compensation will be a huge leap forward. Why should one go to a strange place alone. Be it a modern suburb or not. Be it America, Australia anywhere in the world. If any person, whether white or black where to relocate to Soweto today that person would definitely enjoy the lifestyle there once s/he get used to the people there. @@NataliesAngelASMR I'm from Boksburg. Pretty normal town. Obviously just stay cautious. From lack of experience, I can't say too much about public transport and taxis but rather stick to Uber. Try avoid walking, especially at night and keep your phone and wallet in your pocket. Don't answer your phone while walking and if someone asks for the time, tell them you don't have your phone on you. If you need to make a short distance to a shopping centre which obviously doesn't justify an Uber and the area is relatively safe, then walk. Again during the day.

Yes, Johannesburg is safe, provided that you stick to the tourist areas and not verge outside of the protection of a tour guide or driver. But don't do what the ordinary citizens do by taking a train, bus or minibus to work plus walking a few kilometers from home to the station in the dark. Take a 6:30 train from Park Station to Dunswart in Boksburg and tell me about that experience. Or try walking the Small Street Mall between Commissioner and Moosa streets at midday on any week day.

I would definetly advise not to travel alone, rather do so with a group/trusted tour guide, especially if you are female or travelling near township areas. Never walk alone at night even in the suburbs or more upmarket areas of SA. I would not advise using a local taxi, although I'm sure that topic is debatable.
When you stop at robots (traffic lights) rather keep your windows closed and car doors locked. Do not go into Johannesburg CBD (town) rather just avoid this area entirely.
I think that in general you should just be alert and aware of your surroundings.
The people of Johannesburg are so warm and friendly, I would recommend checking out the Rosebank area, there are so many tucked away restaurants and interesting shops there. The vibe is something special.
But if you really want a treat, go to Cape Town! especially Kloof Street in town. Chapmans Peak, the Winelands, Paarl Stellenbosch etc. The list is endless.

Found it fine, we walked around the cities at night drunk and with no problems, but when we got separated we always got taxis. Just common sense really. But you can always be unlucky and I was slightly worried before I went but thankfully it was fine. Found capetown more rough than Johannesburg. Pretoria to my suprise was the nicest city

I also really do appreciate how you were honest about the safety aspect, unfortunately SA has got quite a lot of negativity around it due to the media but there are so many wonderful and caring people around! I really do think that this country has the potential to be so much more but it will take a concerted effort from everyone and these kind of videos really do go a long way to helping that cause! As a South African myself I have VERY seldomly been a victim of crime and on a daily basis am only experiencing friendly helpful people. My old beetle broke down once in Hillbrow. The next moment I was surrounded by a bunch of guys who told me I am being hijacked. They dragged me off to a party where I was fed and liquored up. After several hours of music and dancing and drinking I was taken back to my car which they have fixed!!!!!

I'd only be getting transport alone. I've done tons of research. Is it safe to just travel alone? How should I carry around money and my phone? A small black bag or money bag around my waist? Because I need to carry my phone and some money, my cards and things. Is there any advice you could offer? Thanks :)

I mean I know crime is high in my country but the only time I've ever experienced it was when my phone was stolen from my apartment. And they literally could've taken a whole lot more that was worth more. I've walked the streets of Nelspruit, Pretoria (CBD, Sunnyside, Arcadia, Wonderboom, Hatfield, Menlyn, Brooklyn), Johannesburg (Soweto, Braam, Auckland Park, Sandton, Midrand) alone at night and the worst I've experienced was cat calling. I understand that I've been lucky. But it's really not as bad as you make it seem. Maybe your negative energy just attracts the crime.

Just do not get deluded into thinking that it is (a) safe and enjoyable everywhere at all times, (b) a good place to invest or relocate. I am really happy that you had a great experience in SA, but as someone who has lived here for 31 years, had my car broken into 22 times this year, been hijacked at gunpoint and know 100s of crime stories, you got lucky. Mainly just want to warn people who watch the video thinking it is super safe here, it is 100% not.

Looks like quite the nice tour of the city itself! Other nice places for a tourist to visit in Gauteng, in general, can be Gold reef city, Sun city and there are so many heritage places and nature reserves. With regards to safety. It all depends on where you are. As someone who grew up there, you learn to be careful and you learn to lock your doors, have burglar bars over any windows, to have an alarm on even when you're at home, to not open your car window if someone points at your front tire like there is something wrong with it etc. Yes, crime happens everywhere, but from my own experience and in comparison to other places I've lived in and visited, the rate is higher in Gauteng. I know many people that have had few such experiences, but also know of many others that have had some seriously scary experiences that they were lucky to survive. In my old neighbourhood home break-ins were so common that it would occur on a weekly and sometimes even a daily basis and I do experience PTSD if I hear noises outside my current home, but we had little exposure to other types of situations. From what I have heard it has improved in the past few years so it can be completely different now.
For a tourist I would just recommend to stay alert, to not leave any of your things lying around anywhere (especially if its an expensive camera or equipment) and then the same advice the tour guide gave you.

@Brad Smith I can't say that white South Africans nor Chinese are racist, that's too much a generalization. What I'll say is that you have curiosity of black people or foreign people which is what I mostly experience in China and you have hate of black people which is what I have experienced in South Africa. And honestly I prefer neither, I would just like to walk in the world without being reminded that I'm different, neither of them are okay. And on the China SA politics, all I will say is that I refuse to comment on Western propaganda!

As with every third world country they only show the nice things to tourists and are excellent in hiding the bad from the tourist's eyes. She only saw the tip of an ice burg that is fulled with crime, hate, murder and corruption. Call me a cynic, but unfortunately that's the truth.

I am proud black South African who is middle class and I used to live in the CBD. When traffic was still a huge problem I used to travel with the convenience of Gautrain fast train.
The City renewal happened long time ago. It has 5 major areas. Braamfontein, a student town with a vibrant night life and metro culture. Nelson Mandela theatre and Constitutional Hill are amongst highlights of the area.
Newtown, a vibrant cultural enclose. With the Market theatre, Fox 1 Flea Market, Africa museum etc.
Marshalltown with mainly large corporations office blocks but recently has strong middle class accomodation. It's got your Ghandi Square, and night life vibe. With couple of Rooftop clubs.
Maboneng, a very vibrant urban renewal area. A strong metropolitan culture. Within Maboneng you have extensions. Extending to Doornfontein.
In Doornfontein, it is also a student friendly area but has strong night life. It is famous with a Naked bar call FACTORY for gay men and DL people. Lots of sexual activity there. So I heard. It's got famous strip club adult hotel the ROYAL. and another one Maxime.
Now up there it's HILLBROW. Not for the faint hearted. Strip clubs, SUMMIT, clubs night life, East access to drugs, quite evil. However, there is humanity as well. Best African cuisines and is 90% lived by foreign nationals mostly from Africa.

I do want to thank you Phoebe (very tempted to say Phoebe Buffay lol). That last comment you made, I was touched that someone could actually speak up like this. Unfortunately... the greater majority of South Africans, who also happen to be black cannot afford to visit or live in other countries, so it’s rare that you will get a different view of South Africa if you generally are in contact with one side. It’s also rare that outsiders come in contact with the locals unless you actually make an effort to do so. I hate to bring race into this topic, and I know that this is no what your video is about....but it’s so hard to explain the misconceptions without discussing the big racial divide in the country. The stories you have heard have been spread by white South Africans who left South Africa in fear of what would happen after Apartheid ended. However one of the things that makes this country so unique is that when the transfer of power was achieved through democracy, when EVERYONE was allowed to vote, it all occurred with no war. The only disruption was to a system that basically made it illegal to control black people. What that guide was saying is so true, black people were not allowed to move around from one place to another especially in the city without documentation which basically stipulated the times and dates one was allowed to be in a certain space. I still have the piece of paper that documented my father’s every move with stamps on it. Whites were free to go anywhere at whatever time, so naturally seeing white people on the streets in the city was not odd, it was normal for them because they were free to under the guise that they were safer because there were no black people. I mean you couldn’t even walk on the sidewalk without being stopped by the police. So when Apartheid ended, black people could be anywhere and naturally people migrate to bigger cities in search of opportunities. This kind of lack of control is the reason why many whites left the country, why they built gaited communities. Well they could afford it, they didn’t have to be faced with the everyday (black) person on the street. Then of course with such a huge gap of inequality and high rates of poverty, crime went on the rise as it would in any big city. It became more of a problem when it got violent. White South Africans who remain generally either simply can’t afford to live outside of South Africa, or are just in love with the beauty that is in the country. You’ll hardly find them living in the city though. South Africa is a young democracy and is trying its hardest to fix the damages and after effects of decades of segregation and oppression and that’s a huge task. We can’t deny the facts, and It’s sad, that the current government has been ridden with corruption. Dirty politics is not unique to South Africans, many countries including USA and others have to deal with troubled governance. However this doesn’t reflect who the people living in that country are. Using USA as an example again, it’s clear to see that DT is a polarising president, just because he is the president doesn’t mean every American is a racist. It’s the same thing in South Africa. Personally I was shocked and hurt when I found out what people actually thought of Johannesburg after moving to Perth. I couldn’t understand where all the crazy stories came from, then I realised that the majority of South Africans living in Perth are whites who migrated with their families when apartheid ended. There aren’t that many black South Africans living here, getting through the visa process is crazy expensive forget affording the air fair or going on vacation. I’ve only met a handful of black South Africans since I’ve moved. The (white) South African community here in Perth is very standoffish and there’s a large population. I’ve made so many friends who are welcoming and supportive and all of them non South African. That was actually the first time I realised that NOT ALL white people are racist, self entitled or have a superiority complex, I actually had to learn that I could be myself without feeling misjudged or defensive all the time. I have to give it up to Australians for being so cool (granted the history of Apartheid is Australia isn’t all that different from that of South Africa) but the people sure are. Honestly, if you’re only getting one version of what South Africa is actually like, you’re doing yourself a disservice. I also recommend reading Trevor Noah’s book, he gives a unique account of his experience growing up in Johannesburg as a child coming from humble beginnings. Again, this is one story, there are many more. Peace and love to everyone.
Disclaimer: of course I’m not suggesting that ALL white South Africans are like this or that all black South Africans are poor and can’t afford to travel. I’m just making this comment based on proportions.
