The gatsby is the undisputed king of fast food in the Western Cape. Very difficult to replicate it at home that's why most people don't bother and that's why most buy it to enjoy that authentic taste. The best thing is you never get a gatsby for yourself cause it's a great meal with friends etc. Glad you enjoyed!

We can add... you can get it on both ends of the spectrum. Your one you had in this vid leans more to the "gourmet" end. We can go the other way...much "cheaper"....and could possibly taste x1000 better than the one you had. I will state that I do enjoy the one you had...probably No2 on my list....

Our other local fish is hake, which is more like the UK fish. Snoek is a game fish... dryer texture and several large bones, but very flavourful. You made the right choice to experience the more local choice!
I highly recommend visiting Mariams in CBD, it wad my go too spot when working in Capetown, Food lovers market is a must also, the variety is just exquisite. I'll NEVER forget SA, was an experience of a lifetime!!!! ❤💯
Snoek can be kinda hit-or-miss, depending on who prepares it (sorry, mom, I don't like your snoek). You can't go wrong with hake though. Hake and chips are the best.

You get Snoek outside Cape Town, it’s called barracuda, but most places don’t serve it outside South Africa because of all the bones, apart from the bones I think it’s one of the best tasting fish you can get. You should definitely try Red Roman fish if you still in the Cape Town area, it’s quite rare to find it but if you manage I guarantee you will love it!m
you can get around CT without a rental car, do the local taxis or uber. Or even the public busses. I have done CT 4 times (3 months the first trip) w no car and been to Stellenbosch, Hout Bay, Constantia, Simon's town multiple times no problem.

The fact that the koeksister didn’t taste like you expected is because ymthat wasn’t a real koeksister. Real koeksisters are golden yellow to brown and braided and syrupy. That was a doughnut.
I’d definitely recommend you rather try out Fish On The Rocks for fish and chips (best hake everrrr) it’s just around the corner from Snoekies and I’d recommend a Cosy Corner or Continental full house Gatsby next time 😉
