  • In this episode of the 991 Build Series I talk about why I chose to ECU tune the car, arguments for and against, how to install the tune yourself, and my honest thoughts. Ultimately, is it worth tuning a naturally aspirated 911? This one is a little long, but stay until the end to hear my honest thoughts.

    Loved this video! Exactly what I was looking for on the COBB 991.1 Code loads. Hopped on eBay right after watching and was fortunate to find an Access Port for half price. Snagged and installed three
    days later (easy). The Op is right on the money in all regards. Car definitely pulls stronger, very noticeable. I only ever shift in manual with paddles and drive in Sport mode 90% Sport Plus 10% and this load gave me the firmer, solid shifts I was hoping for. 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 feel nice and firm with a solid “thunk”, no slipping. Downshifts also feel firmer. That occasional stammer in first when you go from stationary to full throttle is completely gone. Car just overall feels much better and I think it was worth every penny. Looking for excuses to go drive again!!! Thank you Andrew!

    Another awesome video Andrew. FYI the behavior you describe in Sport + of PDK not shifting until redline, that’s normal behavior for 991.1 in sport+ and not a by product of the Cobb tune, this is mainly a track setting to keep you in the power-band while on the track.

    Love the video series. One thing that’s overlooked in tuning a 991.1 is the way the car makes power. On a stock tune there is a dip in power when the car comes on cam. This can be felt and seen on the dyno. A tune almost eliminates this. Even if the car made no more power(it does) this alone still enhances the way the car makes power to make it worth it.

    • @kam1996
      @kam1996 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good point. Even Cobb's OFT tune has that dip, only way to somewhat remove it is via a custom tune (is what I am told and have seen).

I've had a custom tune to take advantage that as well, that's deployed through the Cobb device. As you probably know, the ECU can be restored to factory anytime. PM me if interested, as I've also done a couple of other performance mods that maybe of interest to you.

    Very well done! Exactly what I was looking for. I just purchased a 2014 "S" cab and was looking for a cost-effective upgrade path. I am not much into aftermarket mods and the impact on resale, so this is definitely a path I will explore. Can anyone clarify if the "reverse shift stalk" means what I hope it does? I have an e46 M3 with SMG and I completely agree with BMW in terms of which way you should shift under power. Pulling back on the shifter when aggressively accelerating, and push forward when braking (for cornering) ... I have been doing this for over 12 years now and I am afraid to try it in the 991.1... Is that what it means? And is there a replacement plate for the shifter face to reverse the stamping... if that is what all this means?

    • @nineelevensouth
      @nineelevensouth  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Appreciate you watching and glad you found it so helpful. In terms of the shift stalk - the way mine works is that "up/forward" shifts up a gear and "back/downward" shifts down a gear. So, the opposite of what you describe. I believe the COBB device allows you to change this to either way, depending on which map you are running. That said, changing this cannot be done independently in any map. Certain PDK maps have the direction a certain way. I would check their website or call them for more detail.

    Great video, I was waiting for this one.
    Would you suggest getting a tune if you have a manual? I'm trying to decide Cobb vs. Eurocharged vs. Stock.

    • @nineelevensouth
      @nineelevensouth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I would say yes. I have had this tune on the car for a couple of months now, and have driven the car in all kinds of settings (in town, straight open roads, mountain twisties) and would say I drive with the paddle/floor shifter 75%+ of the time. So, if you have a manual I think you will still really enjoy the personality change and the extra, more linear power the tune will provide. Is it nice that with PDK the car can also drive much more aggressively in the various automatic modes? Yes. But that is not all there is to this tune by any means. Hope that helps.

    • @controlone
      @controlone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the response. What's your take on an OTS type tune vs a custom tune?

    • @nineelevensouth
      @nineelevensouth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@controlone For the average driver, OTS is probably more than adequate. That said, with the COBB tune you can have both. You can load something OTS, drive a bunch with the device connected and use the built in data logging, and then take that data file to one of many certified custom tune shops around the country (info on their website) for them to write one for you exact to your vehicle and driving style.

    Great video, i just subscribed to your channel. I would like to know if you would suggest a cobb on my 991.2 turbo, its a 2017 and has 540hp stock. Cobb advertises 100 hp gain. Another concern i have is if it will void my warranty which ends 2023.Thanks.

    • @nineelevensouth
      @nineelevensouth  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome. Thanks for subscribing. As you point out, theres way more HP to be gained with a .2 tune. So for that reason I would probably recommend it. Keep in mind that the tune w PDK for the .2 is a bit more expensive ($3k retail) so you'll have to weigh that piece in terms of ROI. In terms of warranty - "technically" it voids the warranty. But the beauty of the COBB Accessport device is that you can "flash" the ECU back to stock in like 15 mins. So if/when you need to take it to the dealer you can remove the tune easily, then just reinstall in 15 mins after. I would probably reach out to COBB to confirm, but that's my understanding.

    Awesome video. Love your attitude and the style in which you present the facts. I think this may be the only video that actually shows the driving part. Like to see how it does on my 17 991.2 base Carrera. My service advisor says the "factory" can see the upgrade even when you flash back. They will usually never say anything unless you have a warranty problem then they will say you have modified the ECU. I think the turbo cars get a bit of extra boost and try to eliminate turbo lag. Kind of turns my base Carrera to a Carrera S:) Anyone else try a 991.2?
    Awesome video and We have up to 108 octane in Scottsdale and that would be helpful to try 93 or 95. Standard ECU saw no difference on higher octane, heard the ECU has to recognize the different octane. Keep up the great videos.
