Never thought that HP would do a video like this not duggesting first to buy a new high cost printhead (that would be more cost-effective buying a new printer with a new set of inks)...

I bought an older 8702 for $20 a couple years ago and never used it. Finally Bought some off brand ink from Mercari just this week. After several failed attempts of cleaning the head via the printer, I tried this method and it worked wonderfully!

I was worried when I read some of the comments, but as others have said, it was do this cleaning or get a new printer. Everything went according to the instructions until it came to the 15 minute drying period. There was still lots of water inside. I returned the ink cartridges to the printhead to keep them from drying out. I left the printhead with the ink cartridges on my desk for several hours to dry thoroughly. The printhead carrier wouldn't stay out where I could reach it, so I had to pull the power plug when it traveled to the correct position. Thankfully, all is working great now.

My 8600 Pro has had issues for the last year. Before finding this video, I had purchased a new printhead. It turns out these thermal inkjet printers have such small nozzles that if you go longer than a week without using them they clog. I just tried this method on the old printhead and it takes FAR LONGER than 15 minutes to dry. I'm lucky I have two of these things or I would have been forced to put the cartridges back into a WET printhead. It's been almost two hours and there is still water in this thing. I will give it days if I must and report back my findings but HP needs to put out some model-specific instructions for these problems. The 8600 was a $400 printer at the time that we bought it and it is well out of warranty but we thought we were paying for power use and reliability but we can't afford to replace the printhead ($100+) every time we fail to print something for more than a week or even a month. As of right now, the next printer I buy will NOT have this kind of printhead unless I'm concerned about resolution and am SURE I'll be using it daily. Otherwise, it's an overpriced piece of junk.

I've had my 8600 for 13 years and used it regularly. I did not know that if you do not use it weekly, if not daily, that the cartridges and printhead would dry up and clog. This is so painful and frustrating to deal with.

I have a OfficeJet Pro 8720 - which has a pretty different-looking printhead/ink - and the electronics on the back definitely do not dry out in 15 minutes. Or even hours. I removed the green plate on the back of the printhead with a T6 Torx screwdriver about 3 hours after doing this procedure and there was still water in the little ports where the springs reside. Had to keep inserting and removing the springs (and placing them on tissue paper) to get those ports dried out.

Great, I should have read the comments before I did this to my print head. I have or "had" an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, now it is a paperweight. I get the " There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. I problem persists, contact HP." every time the printer is turned on. I have turned in off by the switch, unplugged from the back of the unit, removed and reinstalled the ink cartridges several times, even removed and reinstalled the print head, with no luck.
Before I did this so called fix, my printer worked great for black and white printing, scanning and faxing, just the color was bad due the the magenta nozzle being partially plugged. I ran the "Clean Print Head" function several times with a little success, but never really unclogged the nozzle all the way. So, I decided to go surf TH-cam and found this HP Support video, so I thought I would give it a try as the video wasn't produced by "Uncle Fred's Printer Repair" but by HP so I could trust it, yea. Thank you HP........

OK I won't leave the cartridges outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes... I'll open the lid and set them in while I let it soak overnight. That sentence was really not that clear it's a little ambiguous!
Otherwise it's the most helpful video I have seen or even documentation that I've read from HP in the last 20 years that's actually been helpful! Although I think my problem is beyond this at this point but this is something I could try yet.

I've tried cleaning using the printer command with no improvement. I also noted that the documentation HP experts below provide talks about cleaning individual cartridges but doesn't show what part of the cartridges to clean. any clarification? Also, as repeated in comments below, what happens if the cleaned printhead is not dry after 30 minutes? What are users supposed to do? Install a wet printhead? I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600. Also

I had to run the cleaning process 3 times before all the ink was removed. Now I am getting a "Printhead Missing" message which I cannot get past. I bought an hp envy 6052 just over a year ago. I immediately had issues and when I tried to look things up to fix it I was told that printer was discontinued. When I called support I was told that no it wasn't, it was fine.
My printer stopped printing anything about 6 months ago. It won't connect to the app either so I can't try and fix anything. I've tried calling support again and getting help but haven't found anyone that's been able to help me. I'm so fed up.

However because HP would not talk to me without paying $19.99 per hour to fix the problem for a printer that was 1.5 years old I feel your just too greedy to do business with anymore. Im recommending to everyone not to do business with your company for exactly these reasons.

@@HPSupport no offense but my Dad is a journeyman pressman. He has cleaned “printers” that have costed over $40 million dollars for over 45 years; among other things on these million dollar presses. I’ve been around them my entire life and not once have I ever heard or been taught to use water on a printer, ink cartridge or a toner. This maybe the way y’all are telling folks to do this but it’s wrong. Not just using what my Dad taught me but high school and college never once said put water on anything printer related; it’s always alcohol. Alcohol dries super fast without destroying anything. I think whomever decided to tell y’all to put water on it, should be fired. Unless that’s how y’all get folks to destroy their printers, print heads and ink cartridges. I’m sorry but I had to say something. Folks should never use water around a computer, phone or any electronic device. It’s like telling folks to walk across carpeting and then pull the mother board from the computer after being electrically charged with static. It doesn’t make any sense. Eating Oreos while brushing your teeth it seems. Yikes!!!!
I’m going to copy this over to Twitter, IG, Facebook and Tiktok. Including my response, your response and the video itself. This is horrible advice.
