The Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF-23 was an American single-seat, twin-engine stealth fighter aircraft technology demonstrator designed for the United States Air Force (USAF). The design was a finalist in the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition, battling the Lockheed YF-22 for a production contract. Two YF-23 prototypes were built with the nicknames "Black Widow II" and "Gray Ghost". In the 1980s, the USAF began looking for a replacement for its fighter aircraft, especially to counter the USSR's advanced Sukhoi Su-27 and Mikoyan MiG-29. Several companies submitted design proposals; the USAF selected proposals from Northrop and Lockheed. Northrop teamed with McDonnell Douglas to develop the YF-23, while Lockheed, Boeing and General Dynamics developed the YF-22. The YF-23 was stealthier and faster, but less agile than its competitor. After a four-year development and evaluation process, the YF-22 was announced the winner in 1991 and entered production as the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. The U.S. Navy considered using the production version of the ATF as the basis for a replacement to the F-14, but these plans were later canceled. The two YF-23 prototypes were museum exhibits as of 2009. The first YF-23 (serial number 87-0800), Prototype Air Vehicle 1 (PAV-1), was rolled out on 22 June 1990. PAV-1 took its 50-minute maiden flight on 27 August with Alfred "Paul" Metz at the controls. The second YF-23 (serial number 87-0801, PAV-2) made its first flight on 26 October, piloted by Jim Sandberg. The first YF-23 was painted charcoal gray and was nicknamed "Spider" and "Black Widow II", the latter after the Northrop P-61 Black Widow of World War II. It briefly had a red hourglass marking resembling the marking on the underside of the black widow spider before Northrop management had it removed. The second prototype was painted in two shades of gray and nicknamed "Gray Ghost".

When you accidentally build a 6th generation fighter in a 5th generation competition you get the YF-23
Actually it had a lot of problems with the engine, structure and maneuverability and the most important, so so expensive even for the US.

@@IAmAsh01 X22 and 23 used the same engines. Both had two prototypes, each with F119 and F120 engines. It was also perfectly maneuverable, but the 22 was slightly better. Never heard of the structural problems, but those would have easily been handled in production.
@@BillDownhill just for information but the f-22 and f-23 were called "YF" not "X." X is experimental, and Y is prototype.

Seen both the F-22 prototype and one of the two copies of the F-23 that were built for the test program and AFT competition recently at the USAF Museum in Dayton Ohio. Both aircraft are light years ahead of any design out there today. The F-23 is even more exotic looking than the Raptor. Both are lethal mean looking machines.
The Yf-23 is a work of art.

Thanks for compiling and sharing the video. It makes me wanna design the 2nd version of my own RC scratchbuilt YF-23. The first one flew like nothing else in speed at the same throttle. This plane has a special place in my heart 😊
The first PC flight simulator I 'flew', circa 1990, 'JetFighter 1' by Velocity featured this aircraft. Loved it.
This is the coolest and the most formidable fighter ever developed. This is the only aircraft that is fully capable so far to take the F22 out of the sky. Between the two aircraft, there is no competition. The YF23 been developed far superior in every respect than the F-22.
This is a fact. Not an opinion.
I also have to add. I believe there were 2 or 3 A-12’s that had internal weapons bays and flown by the CIA. Technically the A12 was possibly the fastest fighter/bomber. At Mach 3.5.
Back to the YF23.
The Air Force made a mistake and chose the wrong aircraft.
When I see the F-15 compared to the F-22. I see the missing woulda’ coulda’ shoulda’.

In my country I served my military service in the airforce, part of our base was used by the USAF. I've never seen this aircraft before. It's amazing.
You've never seen it because it was only a prototype, it lost against the YF-22 that later became F-22 Raptor in a procurement from USAF on the next 5th gen fighters that would replace the F-15 that was getting old.

According to Paul Metz it started in 1985.
Even to this day, that plane looks spooky. Unlike any conventional craft that we see today except the B2 bomber.

I was at Edwards AFB in the late 90’s doing a receiving inspection for F-15E1 to bring back to St.Louis to use as a flight test bird and a YF-23 was parked outside a nearby hanger I got to to walk around it Man was it nice though the engines and seat was removed. The Air Force Guys back at our hanger said those two competing aircraft the YF-23 & YF-22 both worked out of the same hanger we were in, they also told me the pilots loved the YF-23 a lot!!!

now I understand why some claim T-50 looks like YF-23. From the front and side they do have similar profile, but I like F-22's wing shape more than YF-23.

I always wonder if they let the 22 get built first in order to save the 23 for later. I would like to think that we would see queues from this plane in the next gen. It's got that special vibe written all over it. Although, we probably have advanced way more since then too. Who knows!?
The Air Force was stupid for not developing both aircraft! YF-23 was an awesome plane and would have complemented the F-22. It should have been developed as a tactical bomber and would have been the perfect companion to the F-22. Not only could it hit targets but could also have doubled as the fighter it was originally designed to be.

The Air Force should have had equal amounts of Yf-23s built as the F-22. Test them out for a few years with pilots, then come up with who is the best. Then build more of the winner!

IPO from the Revolutionary tailless low drag configuracion to the all aspect stealth to the Mach 2 Super cruise, this aircraft is straight-up gen-6.
Maybe that's the reason why they didn't choose it over F-22. Maybe it was only postponed, rather than cancelled.
Super Cruise on the YF-23 was Mach 1.6 on the Raptor it's 1.8 . The top speed of the YF-23 is higher and it's stealth is slightly better , but low speed applications as well as the actual production costs due to manufacturing process were not friendly to the 23 . A prime example was wing lamination and hand made exhaust tiles that were super expensive and always had to be replaced. Not to mention the debacle of the B-2 with it's excessive tardiness and cost overruns due to , once again , manufacturing processes . Lockheed was thought to be able to handle the scope of the program better . It was way too advanced for the day and that is where Lockheed got it right . They delivered tomorrow's fighter not the fighter of the next century .
Dr. Westside most likely you are correct, and to add, Northrop probably has a distinct advantage using information gained during development to build Gen-6 platform. I highly doubt that this will be the basis for a G6, because the prototype is in a museum. G6 will have echoes of it- but will be far more advanced.

It you where to rebuild it today and add trust vectoring from SU-57 it be the best aircraft by far
Stealthy, sleek, sexy...but also deadly. The world wasn't ready for it when first unveiled 26 yrs ago. It would be a shame that a plane this beautiful, this advanced go to waste & be just a museum piece & a footnote in history.
They should consider bringing this bad boy to back to life. With all the technological breakthroughs in aviation the last 26 yrs, this plane's potential is barely scratching the surface.

People like us,with common sense,would say put updated technology in the F23 airframe and you'd have a masterpiece. But government officials say why do that when you can spend 15 years and $400+billion fucking with the F35.......even though it still can't get combat approved even after a 3 year development extension and $200 billion added to the budget. If the F35 can even make it into service the est lifetime cost is now over a Trillion dollars,that makes it the most expensive weapon ever made.
S Wyatt worldwide, NATO countries all fund the F35. not just america, so that trillion dollars you talk about is the estimated budget for the whole world. F35 per plane is a third of the cost of the f22
Lockheed has the DOD by the balls ever since they went with the raptor over the Black-Widow2. I hope Trump can perform a complete circumcision so that we can start over. otherwise, we are screwed. The F-35 is crap.

the yf 23 was the best ever done. if it should be revived they only have to make the aircraft wider and make room for thrust vector engines. the rear wings should also be able to move down to be in line with the front wings at high speed.

The F-22 had Sam Nunn on the side of the raptor and he was from Georgia where the raptor was being built.

The mistake of Northrop was that they put a bunch of engineer nerds to present the plane to basic high ranking military officials, while Lockheed had their marketing team doing the talking. Safe to say that they convinced the basic officials that their plane was cooler. Both the YF-22 and YF-23 filled all the requirements of the ATF program. They got their revenge 30 years later when Northrop got the B-21 project.
Ahh the glorious Cold War. When silly things like money didn't get in the way of genuine ingenuity.
