F-35 doesn't have a particularly wide body and even for how wide it is, it isn't that heavy. The lift fan is in the center and that's a lot of empty space. Further, the body itself is a wing, so you get all the benefit of the skinnier old planes.
Awesome Video! Before the Lincoln left Everett Wa. I was able to see it from my bedroom window when I lived on the 3rd floor at Colby Ave and Pacific Ave…I worked at the Port of Everett back then…2002-2004 such a sight when I walked by the Naval Station Everett! I could also hear the Sea Lions that were on the rocks in the cove there!
USS Abraham Lincoln is a beauty however my favourite is the USS Nimitz. The reason why I said this is because of Commander Chester William Nimitz who was outgunned and outnumbered and still won the war against the empire of Japan (Battle of the Midway)!!. With respect from Kosovo.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt conducted strike operations to protect the people of Kosovo from genocide. You might want to consider CVN 71 as your favorite.

I was just a Hull Tech that just stood on vultures row a bunch so I really don't know anything about the capabilities of aircraft but it's surprising to me that we're heading toward single engine carrier based stuff. I don't know why it seems wrong on a carrier and out over the big, big ocean but it just does.
You're right. The reason that single engine aircraft were once phased out was because of the very reasons you are imagining. Politics forced it back into action. Recently, the nightmare rang true when a British Lightning caught FOD on launch causing an ejection and loss of aircraft. Last I heard, there was a race to the wreckage by Russians, Chinese and friendlies. You can imagine why they'd love to fish it out first. With 26 years conducting carrier operations, I can say I've seen dozens of engines flame out on the catapult stroke. Good job, politicians.
No pilots have their hands on the controls. They MUST let the cat launch the plane. They keep the hands off the controls, and visibly out of the way until they are airborne.
iirc it's to make sure all the control surfaces and inputs are operable, the original Top Gun likely would have done this since it was filmed on a carrier with real USN crews. Maybe it was cut out just because they wanted to save time and not have to show the entire aircraft launch sequence, but they definitely should've had to have done this
That's not really true. You're looking at the landing area and all the rubber from traps is making it look bad. They will blast the deck entirely and replace all the non skid during every post deployment availability. The lines will get scrubbed fairly regularly and painted several times each year.
No, they don't play Kenny Loggins at all, during flight operation on a flight deck of a carrier, because of the noise is so load, nobody would be able to hear it. That is only in the movie "Top Gun".
@Scott Stevens, yes, the movie is a lame movie, because of Tom Cruise. The F-14 Tomcat was actually the main character of the movie. To show the capabilities of the F-14 Tomcat. The F-14 Tomcat is the only aircraft as the main character in a movie, up the making of the sequel of "Top Gun" 2, which the F/A-18 Hornet was used in the movie.
@@cardinalbob1, I have great knowledge of flight operations aboard aircraft carriers, because I served aboard these 2 carriers. I spent 22 months aboard this carrier, the U.S.S. I really love the Aircraft Carriers of the United States Navy like the USS Abraham Lincoln and the flight deck operations on the ships! The U.S. Navy planes and helicopters on a modern 2013 Aircraft Carrier flight deck like the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower are the Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning, Boeing F/A-18C/D Hornet, Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Boeing EA-18G Growler, Northrop Grumman EA-6B Prowler, Northrop Grumman E-2C/D Hawkeye, Northrop Grumman C-2A(R) Greyhound, Boeing CMV-22B Osprey, and the Sikorsky SH-60B Seahawk. Compare that to an Aircraft Carrier of 27 years ago in 1986 like the USS Enterprise that had the Boeing F/A-18A/B Hornet, Northrop Grumman F-14A Tomcat, Boeing F-4N/S Phantom, Vought RF-8G Crusader, Vought A-7E Corsair, Northrop Grumman A-6E Intruder, Northrop Grumman EA-6B Prowler, Douglas EA-3B Skywarrior, Lockheed Martin S-3A Viking, Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye, Northrop Grumman C-2A/A(R) Greyhound, Northrop Grumman C-1A Trader, Boeing CH-46E Sea Knight, and the Sikorsky SH-3H Sea King. That proves that a lot of things have changed during those 27 years with carrier air wings but living on a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier is sure a lot of fun because everyday if you are the USN 4 Star Admiral in charge you get to see all the planes takeoff in 0 to 184 MPH in 4 seconds and land from 184 MPH to 0 in 4 seconds! but it's more fun if you are among the plane pilots doing it especially if you are ranked Captain of the Air Wing! I hope you enjoy! Thanks!
I'm surprised to see the F-18's vertical rudders appearing to be acting independently of each other and even pointing in opposite directions in the video at 1:55 . Anyone know the reason for that? I would have thought that the two vertical rudders would always be synched to each other so that they are working together to turn the aircraft in the desired direction.

I think it could replace it.
The point of the F-35 is too used advanced radar and stealth to detect enemy aircraft and direct friendly fighters to those aircraft. It's not meant to work alone
I agree. The F-18 filled mighty big shoes replacing the F-14, that bird was the definition of Fleet Defense. I think working together, the F-18 and F-35 would make a terrific team to protect the fleet, and inflict heavy damage on an enemy.

F-35 doesn't have a particularly wide body and even for how wide it is, it isn't that heavy. The lift fan is in the center and that's a lot of empty space. Further, the body itself is a wing, so you get all the benefit of the skinnier old planes.

A true hero
And thank God he had Admiral Spruance to send out there to Midway!

We have had single engine planes on the boat before. The A-7 was a successful aircraft.
@@Inspadave As was the F-8. It’s been a while since those though

@@davidsanders1991 Gotcha! Thanks...
Love the little wing waggles they do before take off lol, never saw that in the original topgun
iirc it's to make sure all the control surfaces and inputs are operable, the original Top Gun likely would have done this since it was filmed on a carrier with real USN crews. Maybe it was cut out just because they wanted to save time and not have to show the entire aircraft launch sequence, but they definitely should've had to have done this
The F-35B is a short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft, it can hover in the air thanks to its special rotating engine.
The Lincoln's Flight Deck loos like it needs some serious maintenance, There's a lot of wear and tear damage
It’s going to be the 3rd in line to be replaced by the new carriers. It will be gone soon enough.
gostei
That's not really true. You're looking at the landing area and all the rubber from traps is making it look bad. They will blast the deck entirely and replace all the non skid during every post deployment availability. The lines will get scrubbed fairly regularly and painted several times each year.
So they really dont play Kenny Loggins every time a jet takes off????
No, they don't play Kenny Loggins at all, during flight operation on a flight deck of a carrier, because of the noise is so load, nobody would be able to hear it. That is only in the movie "Top Gun".
[thumbs up] [salute]
Thanks!

I would have thought that the two vertical rudders would always be synched to each other so that they are working together to turn the aircraft in the desired direction.

Rudders generally opposing each other is how the F-35 creates drag for air braking
