@marshalmarrs3269 On Twitter, A lot of girls were obsessed with Eddie Munson when Stranger Things 4 came out. These same girls probably went to school with guys just like him, but thought they were too weird or over-the-top and probably didn't want anything to do with them at the time.
My point is that they only like him because they find Joesph Quinn attractive.

I get what you're saying and there's truth to that.
However I think a major difference is we as the audience see that Eddie actually has a heart of gold.
That's something you can't tell from first glance. And most of the guys like that in my high school were horrible people.
Sure there might have been a couple that had hidden hearts of gold, but the more outspoken and problematic ones ended up pushing people away.
Fact unfortunately
One thing about Wednesday Addams that is rather overlooked: she's economically priviliged. According to the comics, the Addams are very wealthy and are considered "idle rich", living out of inherited wealth and occasional investments. Therefore Gomez and Mortricia don't need to work and whenever they try to is always out of amusement and curiosity (and in the 60's series Wednesday and Pugsley didn't go to school). In fact, their wealth is one of the main reasons why they are tolerated by their neighbours. I wonder if Wednesday didn't have the affluent background that allows her to fully embrace weird wonderful self, she probably had to conceal it to some extent or give in more to societal norms.
This is an important and overlooked point, and I agree with you. But my mind still paused to take a moment and consider their source of wealth, and is it just me, or does it not make sense that grave and/or tomb robbing dead rich folk would be an extremely lucrative and very Addams'ish part-time career choice?? They probably wouldn't even do it for the riches; like they just want to see if the pyramids really did have interesting curses, useful trap-tricks and perhaps an undead creature or two just lying around.

@@iprobablyforgotsomething Their family has been rich for generations and passed down the inheritance each time to the next generation. Do that often enough and you will be VERY rich. What I loved about the original Addams Family was, despite the fact they had money, their big mansion was all but falling apart but they didn't see a need to get anything but basic repairs done. That's what the REAL rich look like. They aren't putting on airs and graces. They inherit property but aren't really bothered if its not spin and span inside. Who do they need to impress? No one. People are impressed or hate them just because they have money, not whether or not they have the latest model of sports car. There was a real down to earthness about this *rich* family and the way they embraced anyone, even if to them, they were a little kooky by Addams standards. That's what made me wish they were my neighbours. My community doesn't exist, most people cross the street when I leave my home and only the older ones who knew my Dad before, even bother to talk to me. If the Addams lived nearby, I could see myself hanging out with the family and being told, that I wasn't that weird and besides, what's wrong with being yourself?

Like does it really matter how they got rich especially since it’s never really a main part of the show/movies aside from giving them the free time and means to be over the top weirdos. I mean even if they got rich through ultra exploitive stuff it would be still pretty fitting for a family talking about torture, death and darkness all the time (even though it’s in a comedic way). As a legitimate 90s weird girl, who had a cheerleader take her aside and say " I'm so jealous of you, you just get up and put on clothes you like, you don't spend hours worrying about what other people will think. I wish I had that freedom." I think everyone's secretly envied weird girls for a long time now & are just scared.

I've been a weird girl my ENTIRE LIFE. Weird Black Girls are still ostracized and not accepted. There needs to be a revolution for Weird Black Girls. I just thank the Universe that humans like Janelle Monae exist bc she is the epitome of a WBG who was 100% herself from day one. I'm also a fat weird, black girl so I know that a lot of these weird girl aesthetics whether in fashion or film are targeted and marketed to thin, white women like we're still in the early 90's. I'm sorry your community doesn't accept you. You would think by the 21st century, a lot of the sexism, racism and any other ism that isnt accepting of all kinds of people, regardless of race, colour, gender, nationality, weight, faith etc would have been a thing of the past. *sigh*
It’s aesthetic weird. Truly weird/different people are made fun of ostracized. But if your weirdness brings entertainment or money it’s acceptable. Take people who are able to profit off of cringey skit parodies or people who dial it up to 100 to make jokes about other. The POV shorts for example, some people are so different than the regular content it catches your attention and you subscribe/watch.
The weird girl is "in" when you're attractive, edgy (but never too much) and present your "weird" hobbies/interests/traits in a palatable way. (Say, display your skull collection, but never tell people how you clean and boil the shit). Also, reeks of "not like other girls" when there are thousands of "weird girls" who are weird in exactly the same way.
I was a weird and bullied girl in school (because people never fail to tell you if you're weird) but when you're older and have more control of your social circle - everything that made you weird becomes part of the normal interests, because no one is a unique snowflake, everybody just does what they love.

I was the weird girl who never fit in at school. Then I grew into the weird woman who didn't fit in at work. Now I'm in my 50's and living the hermette lifestyle. (Female version of hermit) and I'm happier than I've ever been. Can I still be the weird girl at my age? I would actually love to see a video about older women who don't fit society's norms.

Same, but I’m in my 30s. Every job I’ve had I feel awkward and uncomfortable around people. I feel like people are judging me before they get to know me too. Trying to find work where it’s complexity from home or very little interaction with people.
As a fellow older (nearly 40) weird girl, I would like for this to be talked about, too. I wasn't diagnosed with autism (a major contributor to my weirdness) until I was 30, and I know many women who didn't get diagnosed until they were adults actively looking for help, as autism looks very different in females. Most of the research for autism is done with boys, so many doctors, parents, and teachers can only identify typical male traits while being completely ignorant of female traits. This puts autistic women at a great disadvantage because we never learn healthy coping mechanisms to combat some of our weirder behaviors. Many of these behaviors can be tolerable as children but are maladaptive as adults and put us at greater risk of depression, isolation, difficulties with staying employed, and substance abuse. It's infuriating that men depicting autistic traits are always the "uber intelligent super nerd who saves the day" and women depicting autistic traits are "the weird, dorky, ugly, clumsy girl with no friends who can barely tie her shoelaces" or, "the dark, spooky, bitchy, frigid girl who might secretly be a serial killer who also has no friends and can tie a noose but still can't tie her shoelaces." Ugh...

Like other trends, it’s only acceptable if the person is considered conventionally attractive and only one version of weird is “okay”.
A lot of the "weird" girls in popular culture strike me as very extroverted. I would love, once in a while, to see an introverted girl take center stage -- someone quiet and awkward but with a head full of stories and/or ideas, a creative type. I don't recall seeing such a character since Grace Manning (Julia Whelan) on the sadly short-lived "Once and Again."
Might there be more female creative introverts out there in TV and film that I don't know about? Please, send some recommendations my way so I can get to know them!

The reason that Allison's pre makeover look is vastly preferred is because the dark aesthetic naturally suits Ally Sheedy's colouring. The pink outfit makes it seem like she was forced into her Sunday Best, and is more dated to the 80's than her initial appearance.

Weird "girl" here. Now 47. My weirdness has created true authentic friendships and because i didn't follow the crowd or lifescript, I able to think critically and provide alternative perspectives at work and in life.
Very disappointed there was no mention of the obvious neurodivergence of many idolized weird girl characters. People love Wednesday Addams & Daria because of how they are unafraid to speak the truth, and still immediately hate anyone who speaks that same way to them in real life.
If you're truly a weird girl, no manner of trying to fit in will hide it. It's frustrating and demoralizing young, but then it becomes empowering when you learn that the "average" person bullies you because they realize they suck, are boring, and jealous of your "courage" to be weird. I've been a weird girl who loved solitude and dark witchy stuff and reading and drawing and all sorts of creative interests for as long as I remember having been alive, I never strived to fit in and despite having seemingly always been content observing from the shadows something or many things about me really stood out to the point of people sometimes uncomfortably invading my privacy or even feel intimidated by my mere presence but I felt great and alot of personal freedom while just being me and no one and nothing could ever change that. "Weird" might as well be another term for someone to mean "you're not desperate to fit in and are so comfortable in your individuality that it scares those who struggle with this or can't put you in a box of conventional society-standards".
I feel like Sue from The Middle fits into this too. She is an outcast at school but she isn't mocked and she rarely feels bad for who she is and how she acts (no more than any teenage girl character I would say) and she's also part of a very accepting family. Only her older brother makes fun of her, and that also is pretty basic older sibling stuff.
Being Autistic put me into the “weird” category without my knowledge lol. Had a girl desperately trying to be the the “cool girl”, seemingly flabbergasted at why guys preferred my company over her. I can’t help but just be my genuine self while she exhausted herself and got nowhere. I often shunned too much attention since it can overwhelm me. I felt kinda bad for her despite the bitter attitude she always had towards me.
I have always been the weird girl and felt multiple repercussions because of it. Not many men considered me as a woman they could show their parents even if they fell in love with me, other girls didn’t take me seriously, I was made fun of (not in a bullying way though, my school was pretty friendly in general). people were sometimes just liking my vibe and how it allowed themself to flourish instead of actually caring for me, which led to many broken friendships or people cutting me out because I was not fitting anymore when they married + went the traditional path. in university I had this „genius or lunatic“ reputation that would impact how profs would mark my grades. I never felt I could go into any traditional field of work without it being a huge mess. Of course I ended up in social work haha which is indeed a blessing
Sometimes now I am really self conscious and trying to fit in too much because I became horribly afraid of being excluded. But when I drink or am with friends and my partner I’m back and I confuse the hell out of people. hahaha I can’t help it, it’s a blessing and a curse but I can’t shut it off, it’s in my nature, I’m just a little eccentric.

I think it’s the extension of the “authentic” movement. Ppl had to prove they where being authentic by not being the norm or mainstream which over time pushed ppl to be more “weird” it’s still very performative.

Pretty much every one of these is performative the minute it's publicized to me. The weird girls I've known my whole life didn't do it for clout or recognition it was always just about being themselves. They had eccentric mannerisms n behaviors but there was always internal consistency. Off brand fashion sense that was quirky but still looked well put together. Nowadays I'm skeptical of the majority of ppl, most of what they do is performative af for the sake of branding for followers online. The real n true weirdos come across as comfortable in themselves without needing to be the center of attention. Master of fact most hate to have attention on them cuz they're so used to not feeling seen so when I look at stuff like this I actually end up profiling. I prefer the comprehensive look at who ppl are cuz this? This is fake for most of the supposed weird girls

Great video as usual! Though I wonder to what extent the "goth girl" /"spooky girl"/"Alternative girl" etc trope actually overlaps with the "weird girl" trope. It has an edginess and a cool factor that redeems her in the media - and I'm not sure that the "weird girl" who doesn't have those traits is seen in such a positive light.

It's truly angering to find videos of TikToker's claiming "weirdness" based on some little quirky thing... while they get thousands of likes and follows. I was just a quiet girl growing up. Through high school and college, I became the "cool girl" and rejected anything feminin, as I had way more guy friends, my hobbies were male-dominated, and most of the women I met in college weren't very nice. At 37, I'm very much a weird girl and damn proud of it. While most of my hobbies still skew heavily male (anime, gaming, brony, furry, DnD), I do seek out female friendships and I find them far more important than I did. I'm in my hobbies because I truly enjoy them and I don't care what others think about them. Even as a brony and a furry, I fly those flags high because I love those fandoms and the media they celebrate. My age, compounded with my race, does earn me looks form others, but I just don't care. I have one life and I'm going to enjoy it how I see fit.

All you can do is be yourself. Not everyone is going to accept you. Finding inner peace helps. The more love and understanding you have for yourself the more you can have that for others.

It's going to be like that because Hollywood does what people want to see. The truth is that people are still shallow and judgmental, despite trying to appear more "inclusive" these days. But deep down, they still like seeing conventionally attractive people on screen, and when the main character is not conventionally attractive, they complain that Hollywood has gone too "politically correct" and only casts fat, ugly and disabled people these days for the sake of representation. Basically, things are the same as before, and all this inclusivity thing is performative.
Everybody is weird. But you can only be weird in certain specific way.

I don't dress as I did in high school but I'm still weird. I read a book at pep rallys, now i read books while the other moms gossip and blab. I walked down the hallway listening to music, now I grocery shop while listening to music and tuning everyone out. I look like everyone else now but I act like myself. And nobody likes it 😂
Weird is subjective, it is relative based on the norm, or rather, the common. In reality, there is no such thing as weird or normal. Only common and less common.
One of the only reasons why weird girls are in is because they are being casted & played by “pretty,likable women”…. As a black women your labeled as weird if quote on quote you don’t fit the ideology of a “black woman”…. I listen to alternative Hip hop, watch anime & love DC… told my friends this & was automatic labeled weird or not a real black girl

@RoninRen except so many girls have been tomboy their entire lives, being a pick me is a recent thing and anyone can be a pick me not just tomboys. Most pick me's I know are girly, they sexualise themselves and do the most for male attention. I've never met a tomboy pick me before

All of them have some type of energy with there aura it's gets people's attention and the evolve something that people would never understand Until they sit back and just think about it.

Every time some new movie, TV series, book comes out it spuns a trend of putting a social group of some kind on a pedestal when any other time that said group would be looked down on. Perfect example, everybody and their mother has always looked down on Nerds, geeks and people that were boxed in as socially awkward kids. Once a number of movies came out with attractive actors playing these roles along with rappers, pop star embracing the nerd look through fashion trends. Now everybody wants to be the group they looked down on throughout elementary, middle and high-school.
Same thing with the whole goth/all black aesthetics. I know so many people in high school were not in anything related but once movies like twilight, girl with the dragon tattoo along with other forms of media promoting the all black out look came out; everybody fell in line.
A lot of you all sound like you’ve never known who you were in the first place.
The same kids that bullied me all throughout primary and high school for being socially awkward and weird, are the same ones doing everything they can to be weird and stand out because of pop girlie's like Billie Eilish and Doja Cat. Bit of a mindf-ck.

I think "weird" girls have been stealing shows since the beginning of film (i.e. that girl in a suit kissing another girl) and stories (i.e. lil red riding hood, snow white, Elaine from Seinfeld, weird, quirky, pixie, abnormal etc. )

I've always been the weird girl, but not the fun quirky kind of weird girl, the kind who does stuff that doesn't make sense to people. I'm just a complex human being like everybody, but there's this generally accepted idea of a "package deal" of traits. I'm more like a plate that contains chocolate, broccoli, a peanut butter and tomato jelly sandwich, a box of raisins, caviar, and a Big Mac. People are always like "Victoria, you're nothing like my first impression of you. Here's a few examples of things about me that don't make sense to people.
1. I wear sunglasses all the time (indoors, at night, indoors and at night) but I'm very friendly, I smile a lot, I'm very outgoing and like to talk to people. I've been told that I'm the nicest person at my workplace, but they wouldn't have guessed it from my appearance. People think sunglasses mean you're trying to hide or be unapproachable, no, I just love wearing sunglasses.
2. I've been told that my overall appearance gives off a high-maintenance vibe, I wear lots of red lipstick everyday, I love sleeveless dresses (I only wear dresses and skirts, actually) and I love luxury items, but I buy them on clearance or used (sometimes with minor inconsequential cosmetic damage). At the same time, I'm content being outdoors, I love walking through the woods, I actually outearn my boyfriend and neither of us make a lot (I was the one who asked him out and I paid for both of our coffees on the walk in the park part of our first date)
3. I'm an early riser (I get up every day between 4 AM and 6 AM, usually 5 AM in summer and 6 AM in winter), but I'm actually an easygoing type who just likes to enjoy her mornings. I'm never in any hurry to do anything and I'm certainly no workaholic (even though I love my job).
4. My overall appearance (sunglasses, sleeveless dresses, red lipstick) doesn't suggest this but I'm a gamer. I'm not like a COD type gamer, more of a Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and Pokemon type. I actually make references to games to people often forgetting that they might not play video games.
5. I'm very good at handling the cold (I'm from New Hampshire) but I'm no show-off. I dress what's comfortable for me regardless of the temperature, my boyfriend lives in Pennsylvania which means I can handle the cold better than most of them can, even though my boyfriend likes it that I can wear a sleeveless dress with just a scarf, no coat when it's around the freezing mark, some of his friends think I'm showing off since that's an outfit they'd associate with September, not December.
6. I've lived on my own since I was 18 (if college dorms don't count, then make it 22) but I'm extremely close with my family.
7. I'm nice but I'm not a doormat. That seems to surprise people since they think being assertive means being overly blunt and harsh and that being nice means being overly agreeable.
8. People are surprised that even though I was always a dresses and skirts kind of girl, I did daredevil type things like I'd build up tons of height on a swing, then stand on the swing, holding onto the ropes so I didn't fall off. It was so much fun.
Not sure what my point is. I guess that we're all complex human beings but some of us don't make sense to others. I'm the "don't make sense" kind of weird girl.

I watched that one; it was really about how recent disney heroines have been getting certain personality traits copied from Rapunzel and Anna.
Body shape, skin color, ethnicity have changed. But they all have a recurring awkwardness and similar personalities.
The video is worth a watch and is really a critique for disney to create different personalities again instead of copying past ones that they know will make money 💸

@@jennifermanning8282 I did watch as I am fan of Mordern Gurlz, but I strongly disagree with her examples and feel that she had a lot personal biases when she came to her conclusions.
By her own logic on a surface level, most of the renaissance girl are the same character as well.
Anna and Rapunzel are similar but outsiders of them the others a different enough to me. Moana, Judy, Vanelleope, and Mirabel aren’t adorkable to me. Moana is closer to Mulan than Rapunzel for sure.
And if having an “adorkable moment” is enough for Raya to get a mention, then Mulan and some other renaissance girlies need that criticism as well.

As a guy I say I love this weird girl takeover and I hope it stays. I see it as empowering to women in general, especially as celebrities are doing it as well. It's important though that this 'weirdness' comes from somewhere and can either or both be a defence mechanism and one or more disabilities. Hence, laugh with them, but take this weirdness serious. I'd say embrace the weirdness. I sure love it when girls and women do it and feel good doing so.

I also hate the celebrities who play the "weird girl" character. All of the boys and girls drool all over them and all of a sudden they are considered the popular kids? They aren't true outcasts then if they change themselves in any way or if they just follow a trend.
Lisa Loring needs to be mentioned more, her portrayal as Wednesday Addams brought a cuteness to the weird girl in the early 60s broke the gender norm for young girls. The only thing that made her 'weird' at the time was liking the outdoors.
