    I don't really think weird girls have been socially accepted, I think the aesthetic of weird girls has gotten co-opted as trends for consumers. The girl is still outcasted, but her clothes, her interests, her sense of humor have become folded into mainstream culture.

    • @PhoenixRising87

      You think it's romanticized? I don't see that; a lot of these narratives basically show how much it sucks to be treated like a freak, but also that you can find a place to belong. Just depicting something isn't endorsing it.

This entire trope unveils just how misogyny and ableism meet at the middle and treat neurodivergent women. I have enormous amounts of trauma from being denigrated for my characteristics my entire life, from family to peers to authority figures. Being looked at funny, verbally abused, ignored, humiliated, only to be used when convenient. No shit I have low esteem for others; they have never once treated me with kindness irrespective of my quirkiness.

      Yes true... There is a lot of research done on scapegoating mechanisms but there is little one can do to prevent it from happening. I do believe making victims aware that there is nothing wrong with them as helpful. Unfortunately scapegoating is often a way for families or communities to hide problems that they feel cannot face. In adulthood, scapegoating became a way for adult children to hide the fact of family history of abuse by blaming everything on one member who seemed vulnerable for attack (and/or talks about it). Often the scapegoat is targeted by the siblings who were treated more favorably. In that way, the less favored sibling(s) becomes the punchingbag for everything that is wrong in the family. Family therapy can help but only rarely are the culprits and less affected family members willing to take part. So my focus would be on empowering the scapegoat(s).

    I'd argue that society HASN'T become more accepting of the "weird girl," it's just expanded its definition of normal. As someone who went through high school with undiagnosed autism, I had a front-row seat to the dichotomy of the social acceptance offered to girls who were just different enough to be "quirky" in a way that was considered cute or endearing versus those considered truly weird. It was painful to watch others find an identity of admired independence in their slightly off-beat hobbies or interests while my struggles to speak or move normally enough to fit in, let alone navigate the bewildering landscape of acceptable fashion or interests or conversation, got me repeatedly mocked or rejected. Our cultural fetishization with the 'right sort' of weird just makes it that much more painful to be the 'wrong sort,' culminating in a sense that people like me can't even be WEIRD the right way.

      Jup. There’s exotic-weird and there’s weird-weird. The media usually panders to the former kind, the one that is witty, special, cool and attractive because it’s a nice fantasy for both men and women alike. One of the best weird girl characters I’ve seen lately is Reggie from Twelve Forever. She’s definitely the weird-weird type and not everything weird about her that her peers make fun of is endearing. Sure, she’s creative, energetic and usually means well, but she can also be rude, gross and childish and the show knows it, which you would never see on any of these exotic-weird characters that are only ever picked on for things that are actually blessings in disguise.

    • @TheSongwritingCat
      @TheSongwritingCat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +241

      Speaking of autism, this feels similar to the difference between various kinds of real autism and Hollywood autism which tends idealize autistic savants. Even if, in universe, the weird girl only has a small friend group, the audience watching the story is often still drawn to her intelligence, humor, style, etc. Movie weird girls may also be helpful to the other characters because of their intelligence, unconventional thinking, etc.
      Hollywood has trouble telling stories where characters should just be treated well because of their essential humanity. A lot of depictions of the weird girl make her appealing or useful in some way as though she doesn't deserve love, dignity, respect, etc. just because she's a person.

I would not even use the word "weird", since those types of girls simply exhibit aloof behaviour, not willing to waste their time and energy on dealing with the bullshit that surrounds them. And boy, do I love a story centered around a female character AND devoid of unnecessary romantic lines. Yes true ..

      This also is the same for autistic/adhd weird girls- also a space cadet. To an extent though my weirdness is seen as quirks and more endearing and adorable, but I think part of that is because I hide the messier stuff, the socially unacceptable things to be more digestible. I am true to myself, but people don’t see the layers of anxiety and the fact my brain is constant noise. They see the bounciness, the enthusiasm, the bubbliness and “random” things I say (which is unintentional and mostly me not understanding what is appropriate to say), talking excessively (which is the one people tend to get really annoyed at, but I mean I say about 10% maybe of what is in my head aloud their brains are mostly silent and they don’t understand that if I sit alone with my thoughts I think I’ll explode, also I don’t always know how much is the appropriate amount to talk for the situation or when to stop talking and even when I can pick that up at times it can be very hard for me to stop (think Robin’s monologue from stranger things. oh and the interrupting and poor volume control also makes people mad but I can’t help it

While in Europe, I was the somehow odd exotic beauty with a bit of unnatainable air. Lots of dudes were hitting on me. Never once I was called a lesbian or weirdo. And analytical as I am I realized society is full of bullshit. I didn't let any of those things come up to my head again. They're both ilussions. Don't know where you're at now but just in case you or someone else needs it. I was in this situation just 6 years ago and even though no one noticed, I was very insecure. But, after high school, I chose to study Chinese (which was resented in my hometown for being so weird to the point even teachers would ridicule me) and wow, best choice ever. I made amazing like minded friends who I still speak regularly, got my Bachelor, met the love of my life (who ironically went to high school with me) and we just got our own place to live and I got a full-time job I love. I still am the weirdo of 6 years ago, and people are still treating me like one, but as I'm getting older I'm also more confident than ever and owning it! I would never even be to imagine stuff would get so much better in only 6 years.
      Hopefully this inspires some of you to stay true to yourself. The outside world can be very harsh, but it will get better!

I’ve always hated being viewed as weird. I tried my best to imitate what I perceived to be normal or cool but that just made me weirder in the eyes of others. After years of struggling with this, I just learned to be as invisible as possible while also hoping to be noticed for who I really am...not just this weird, awkward creature.
    Disappointed so little was said about the awkward misfit.

Then I tried to act, dress, listen to music, ect. in a way that I thought everyone would like and still couldn't find acceptance. Better to just do your own thing. Just like "cool girl" is a male fantasy of a girl that is not like other girls (read: she's extremely convenient), "weird girl" is a female fantasy of a girl that's not like other people. It's the cool girl many of us actually want to be.

      Many people want to stand out and being a weird girl is the most possible and natural way to do so because weird girls are portrayed as not up with the 'standards' but the more you get to know her the more you feel for her. This makes them the most relatable and authentic characters out there.

    Years ago on a middle school bus a boy called me weird. I said, "Thank you for the compliment." He was surprised and didn't bother me after that. It was a defining moment for me. I still got bullied but I took control of the word weird. I define weird for myself as not going with the obvious answer. As an adult I taught my son that being weird is SO much more interesting and fun than being normal.
    Movies can really mess people up. Bullying also messes people up.
    I wasn't bullied because I was weird, I was bullied because I was quiet and timid and didn't fight back. I was an easy target. Really, even if I fought back I would have been bullied. I was too tenderhearted and easily wounded. People who would bully picked up on that. Now that I am older and have gained confidence in myself, I don't let bullies get to me. I have the confidence to know that I can stand up for myself and those around me. I know when to fight back and also, importantly, when to walk away from a fight. Yes, I went through a deep depression during middle school and some of high school, but that is my past and I use that knowledge and experience to try to help people who might be bullied now. I am in a healthier place now.

    What is objectively "weird" to others is a constantly moving target. I moved when I was still in public school, and went from being relatively well-liked by my peers, to becoming a sort of social pariah once we arrived in our new town. It's not like I was doing anything out of the ordinary, they just wanted to establish some Lord of the Flies social hierarchy with anyone new, and that pushed myself and other newcomers to my school to actually become friends throughout high school. Children can be downright cruel in school settings while being perfectly normal and kind when they're away from the classroom. Teenagers who want to establish their superiority over others by bullying or taunting typically face their own inner turmoil and insecurities that lead to them acting out against other people. "Weird" is such an ambiguous term to apply to anyone, because it can be weird to one person, quirky to another, and admirable to someone else. Seeking out those who enjoy your brand of "weirdness" is what leads to fulfilling relationships and diversified interests. And coming to terms with yourself leads to real freedom and the maturity to love yourself as you are. When you finally stop letting other people define you, it's very liberating.

My siblings and family members have always known since a long time that my interests are weird, and i know am treated a tiny bit differently, but am grateful that they don't try to ask if something's wrong with my life or anything like that. But they do sometimes behave like its a major problem that i don't have too many friends. No. 1, i do have friends, but only a few people are worthy of being my closest friends, and no. 2, i have a lot of acquaintances (they are what my parents think are too called friends), it is just that i don't often mention their names coz why should i even have to?? They don't need to know about everything in my life. But that is why i get treated a little strangely at times...they think i do not have anyyy friend, my elder siblings think i will never fit into social circles once i get into college, etc. It hurts me, but anyways, I am just proud of my weirdness and hope i don't lose much of this character in future trying to "fit into social circles".

    What I've found is that class also separates the acceptance of the weird girl, too. In real life, the weird girls I know, especially as an adult, wear weird clothing to reflect their inner-uniqueness. Their clothing is mismatched or vintage-looking; they look intentionally poor or lower class. The rich weird girl, like Gigi, has far more acceptance because their class allows them to access and navigate different sectors of life without fear of ridicule for their weirdness. Lower middle class or poor weird girls like Allison, Dawn, or Carrie are weird either unintentionally or as a coping mechanism. Class freedom allows some girls to embrace weirdness and some to hide in its shadow.

      Not every performative Weird Girl is middle or upper class. Certainly you can achieve certain aesthetics (e.g. punk) on a budget. But I don't think it's an accident that a lot of the goths and more stylized Weird Girls are relatively privileged. Janis Ian, Daria Morgendorffer, Lydia Deetz, etc. Their weirdness is a performative rejection of their conventional middle class environments.

      Exactly I think a lot of people don’t really understand how class plays a huge role in this. A lot of people come to copy the more grungy punkish style but it originally came from people who shop at thrift shops who had no choice but to wear clothes that holes in them.

    Well...no. Society is in no way accepting of “weird” girls now. Luna, April, Allison, Wednesday, all these girls have at least 2 things in common: they’re odd and ATTRACTIVE. If you were to really do a character study on Dawn Weiners you’ll find that she’s bullied for being unattractive and awkward, and therefore is seen as being weird. Life would be immensely difficult for her in any era because she can’t be validated by her looks, which isn’t fair but is unfortunately true.

      Definitely get where you’re coming from but she wasn’t really a weird girl she’s still had group of friends, attractive and part of her odd behavior was more obviously to do with personal struggles mentally such as her eating disorder. I think most people just saw a girl with clearly a lot of personal issues that effected her behavior. At least according to this video’s standards of one, I definitely say out of the skins UK series from that generation in particular it is ‘sketch’ who would fall within the line of the weird girl trope, and being the weird basket case girl who ends up completely losing it & ultimately became the antagonist.

    • @Axiniana
      @Axiniana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      She is a nice example, I think, but, as it has been mentioned in the comments, she is mentally unwell, just like J.J. from the same gen.
      Also, Pandora from Gen2. She fits the Space Cadet description rather well. Especially in the earlier episodes. What I especially love about Panda is that her character arc didn't show her becoming conventionally pretty or even having a style-typical makeover. By her graduation in S04 she feels less weird, but that's mostly due to growing up and embracing herself. Her actions and words became a bit more adult and refined, while her over-the-top goofy outfit style stayed with her. I actually really liked the writing of her character.

I wasn’t ostracized because I was all in black and moody but I wasn’t attractive and alluring either, I mostly was the listener, just observing people because I find folks interesting . I just did my thang, dressed how I liked and was kinda proud I didn’t fit into any box. As you get older none of these roles matter anyway.

  • @totorominion124

    I feel like one aspect overlooked about the smartass weird is that she is often (though not always), ironically as bad as the people she judges. She think she is above "normal" people but her judginess and resistance to be introspective can makes her worse. She thinks other people are lesser for falling into tropes when she often deliberately plays into a trope. I'd love to see a smartass weird girl who learns she isn't above "normals" because people are more complicated than the simpletons she sees them as.
