one of the most beautiful arias Handel have written, get goose flesh and little tears in eyes with this aria, always, what can we say... Scholl is simply the greatest voices in centuries :P
Fun staging. Beautifully sung of course by Andreas, but that horn player! WOW! He really played with a nice balance of aggressive yet warm tone with fantastic lip trills! Bravi to all!
I listen around to other countertenors sing this, and I'm always brought back to Andreas Scholl, the Gold Standard! One may hate the silliness of the choreography in this rendering of the piece, but there is no denying the supremacy of the singer. Bravo, Andreas!
amazing how Andreas Scholl is always better than anybody else. Va Tacito has many fantastic versions of female and male singers, but Andreas Scholl is always an increase in enjoyment.
Female soprano is better. Started to listen to Haendel because of countertenours, Jarussky etc. now cannot listen to them. Well, Scholl is an exeption, he looks quite manly, despite his voice so at least it is not digusting to listen to him, but his voice is weak. Good sopranos are more powerful in these roles definetely.
By far one of the most excellent performance of this aria in relation to the singer (Scholl), the costumes and setting - it is a package which all comes together to make something that is without a doubt nothing but superb.
I listened to him performing this live in San Francisco in November! His singing and expression (both face and bodily) was so engaging; his whole being vibrated with the music. His voice simply filled the church and drowned the audience!
I saw this performence on Tv one of my friends went to Copenhagen to write about the this performence for a newspaper as a critical, he return two times to watch the opera. And I understand him after that I saw it on television. It was great. I loved the bas singer and Andreas vocie
Everytime I watch this I love the music - it's a toss-up between the horn and Andreas Scholl but the staging of this scene is so great! Handel was a musical genius.
The trill at 5:45 is phenomenal! Scholl remains one of my favorite countertenors for his ability to have a sincere moment of clear tone, and the at the very next moment have his voice movingly very rapidly. Obviously his musical technique is fantastic, but this is one characteristic that not every countertenor possesses.
Andreas owns this aria. I love the humour of this production. It is so funny to see two alpha males competing about who is bigger. Handel operas are full of humour, there is no need to present everything old as deadly serious.
A mi me fascina!
I like this rendition of this aria. You don't have to be an expert as to what is happening. The performance is sound and the staging is good. Very enjoyable. Thanks.
Handel and Andreas at their most brilliant - love the hunting metaphor in this famous aria with the music beat imitating the canter of the horses to the accompaniment of the hunting horns. I love the modern setting -it works so well. Those people who think that only traditional treatment works are deluded. Get with it!
Phenomenal horn solo, Andreas voice is full body here, and horn never been so beautiful!!!!! (and of course his Excellency Lars Ulrik Mortensen- I saw him last year here in San Diego playing Biber- Buxtehude) ...this made me give my own try on you tube, but it's not ready yet...
FWIW, that exact balance that you describe leapt out at me when I listened to this for the first time. My first and most powerful impression was the horns, and how his voice and they kept trading off. So the effect definitely came through, especially to someone who hadn't heard the aria before.
It's good to know that someone else feels the same way about this rendition. It seems that ANY criticism of Scholl is like raising a 'red flag' in front of some listeners.
@aritau simply do not understand. He is not a good actor? He has no good clothes? He does not have the body of Cesar? His face? ... I do not think very often go to the opera ... Andreas Scholl is one of the best countertenor, not to say, "the best." And His face? He is beautiful, a truly beautiful German ... I have not met another German more handsome than him ... Forgive me, but I think your comment is out of everything!
"Va tacito e nascosto quand'avido è di preda l'astuto cacciator. E chi è mal far disposto, non brama che si veda l'inganno del suo cor." --- "The cunning hunter moves silently and stealthily when he is eager for prey. And he who is disposed to evil Does not wish the deceitfulness Of his heart to be seen."
Been doing some "research" and i think it might be the main horn player from the Copenhagen,s simphony Orchestra.... Listen to his Tthaikovky,s 5,s soloist performance..: th-cam.com/video/t7TnRinOjLA/w-d-xo.html
Don't be so harsh! I find this production to be an exellent example of the timlessness of this opera. Händel appeals to human emotion which ar just that - timless! How cares if this historical events took place during the Roman age, if the plot would be of a modern war-conflict it would had looked something like this.
Agreed -- they didn't want Tolomeo to really come across as someone to be taken seriously just yet. That was rather nice; he's revealed as increasingly slimy and much more dangerous as time goes on, which gives him (Tolomeo) a perceived character evolution that he lacks otherwise.
It is about hunting :-) I think he plays fantastic! His timing and sence of phrasing is amazing, it hard not to move when hearing this. It is Lars-ulric Mortensen
Philomelodia, I couldn't agree more! The overly bright "a" sound is not typically one of Scholl's shortcomings...I was surprised to hear it myself! Try the "Va tacito" audio-only version (it's his only other version on TH-cam). It's a bit slower and the pronunciation is dead-on. If you're hell-bent on a live performance, try searching "Andreas Scholl at the BBC Last Night of the Proms" with John Williams (the guitarist). It's wonderful! Cheers, Sol
Thank-you for your response! Perhaps I should like to compare Scholl's usual renditions(particularly in opera & oratorio) to the ultimate countertenor (my preference in every genre) Michael Chance. And you are quite correct in your alluding to the fact that we all perceive and react very differently to music, especially to that of the human voice.
I have high hopes for this production (which I haven't seen in full yet). I love updatings, but I hate updatings which try to be modern and traditional at the same time (i.e. The Met's Faust which is in 1945 in USA but has the soldiers wearing 1800 French uniforms, or Glyndebourne's Giulio Cesare, set around 1900 but which has Cesare (Sarah Connolly) wear a full Greek armor plate). This one seems to be a thorough, well-done updating. Plus it's Andreas Scholl!!!
I sang for him today, Im a countertenor.
What emotion, just seeing him there listening to me!
I can't explain how much I love this. Handel is a genius and Scholl is perfection...
a tip: you can watch movies on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Roman Callum Yup, I have been using flixzone for since december myself :)
How did I get to be this old without appreciating Andreas Scholl. Love that voice.
one of the most beautiful arias Handel have written, get goose flesh and little tears in eyes with this aria, always, what can we say... Scholl is simply the greatest voices in centuries :P
Superbe interprétation d Andreas Scholl. The best
Fun staging. Beautifully sung of course by Andreas, but that horn player! WOW! He really played with a nice balance of aggressive yet warm tone with fantastic lip trills! Bravi to all!
I agree! Gorgeous playing.

I totally agree. Every time I try to find other performances but I always return here. Absolutely superb
I don' t agree, each one has something that the others have not.
I laugh every time I listen to this--and that is many times. The campy humor is timeless.
The hornplayer in this rendtion is definitely on another level.
amazing how Andreas Scholl is always better than anybody else. Va Tacito has many fantastic versions of female and male singers, but Andreas Scholl is always an increase in enjoyment.
Try Sarah Connelly in the Glyndebourne production, Absolutely captivating.
fluffyfour I know Sarah Connolly is great, thanks 👍
@@fluffyfourTotally agree.. and the dancing! Wonderful production altogether. ❤
Not a fan of the staging but Andreas Scholl never fails to delight. What a voice!

Yeah that military clothing seems to be tasteless, but if you know how rare humor is for most germans you would cherish it more 😁
beautiful rendition, especially love the beautiful sound of the horns here
No one handles Baroque affectations the way Handel does! Especially with a singer such as Andreas Scholl. He is one of the wonders of the world.
By far one of the most excellent performance of this aria in relation to the singer (Scholl), the costumes and setting - it is a package which all comes together to make something that is without a doubt nothing but superb.
Maravillosa versión, me encanta. Solemnidad, perfección
y humor ... Andreas Scholl genial como siempre
My favorite vocalist of all time
I just want to say what a delight it is to listen to Andreas Scholl. What a voice, what an art. I am a big fan.
I saw this production. Scholl was absolutely amazing in this role!

love the chairs going up an down, great idea!
Bravo Andreas, Bravi Corni, Brava Orquesta !!!

Have to keep coming back to this video. Andreas at his best love it
Scholl is magnifique as always
sublime voice and talent !!!
I've loved this piece since I first heard it on a scratchy record in the early 1980s. This is absolutely fantastic!
The trill at 5:45 is phenomenal! Scholl remains one of my favorite countertenors for his ability to have a sincere moment of clear tone, and the at the very next moment have his voice movingly very rapidly.
absolutely charming!
BRAVO, Andreas!
The slight laugh at 3:42 feels like part of the music and is wonderful
IMRESIONANTE!! NO ME CANSO EN DECIR ANDREAS ERES EL MEJOR CONTRA TENOR DEL MUNDO..........

Andreas Scholl's looks/reactions are priceless!
It's the tenth time in a row that I'm lissing it, and I''m still not sick of it!
WONDERFULL
ESPECTACULAR!!!!! IMPRESIONANTE, BRAVO A SCHOLL
Absolutely Fabulous!!!
What a voice !!!!!!
Quite wonderful! Thank you for sharing!

Wow. Love it and great see Chris Robson on stage as well.
Chris Robson is my idol from his earliest performance. He's a countertenor who evades category.
Einfach Oberklasse. Andreas Scholl - ein Meister seines Fachs.
Handel and Andreas at their most brilliant - love the hunting metaphor in this famous aria with the music beat imitating the canter of the horses to the accompaniment of the hunting horns. I adore this aria Scholl at his best amazing man
Exellent aria sung by Andreas Scholl.
Haendels best Opera ever written!
Andreas , te adoro !!
I love it. Thank you!
Bellissimo. Truely great!

Wunderbar!

Fabelhaft, eine Stimme des Engels

Yes it is. And in true Baroque tradition Scholl introduces extra embellishments and ornaments in the repeat.
Lovely and stunning. I will listen to you, to learn how to sing.the Baroque composer which I thought was the most difficult to express.
Wonderful!
Does someone know, who the amazing honrplayer is? :)
Most like Ursula Paludan Monberg

It is my favourite aria of the Giulio Cesare.
Fantastic!
This is why I like him as much as Jaroussky
He serves the music, Jarouski serves himself
