decades ago, I lost a cassette tape in which this song was recorded from FM radio. I used to listen to this pure and orotund voice. I didn't know who sings and what title this is. Since then, I have been longing all the time from the bottom of my heart. Listening this video, I convinced that this song is it. Nobody knows how happy I am now. I am deeply grateful.
Yes indeed, this is very beautiful. You should also listen to the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, another gorgeous setting of the same text, written about the same time.
I have almost all Andreas Scholl's CD ! I discovered him on France Inter radio, a sunday morning with the Nisi Dominus (from Vivaldi too), while driving. I stopped my car for listening...Did you heard him in the Marco Rosano's Stabat Mater ? Please look at this on TH-cam too. I want this for my last time!!!

Alto is higher than contralto. Here he sings in the countertenor range, the equivalent of contralto.
This piece is just so beautiful, and Scholl really brings it to life. The finale after minute 17 is a true wonder.

Hm, strange. That's exactly what I miss in his voice. To me it emanates a chilly elegance and a certain strictness and precision. Technically and vocally he has everything, a true genius. But what I often miss in his voice indeed are true emotions, true feeling. Take Iestyn Davies instead - he's certainly not fit to hold the candle against Scholl in terms of elegance and precision, but nobody will make you understand the mood of a song, make you suffer with the protagonist like he does. This man seems to be made of emotion.

Such a beautiful voice
Scholl performed this with the Australian Chamber Orchestra last night in Wollongong Town Hall. It was incredible. The man has such control and elegance. Beautiful, and the ACO was extraordinarily good, and I've never heard Helena Rathbone play so well! It was SO damn brilliant, I don't know what could possibly top it.
The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra really complemented Andreas when they performed Nisi Dominus, thats really good. Would love to listen to more live Scholl Vivaldi, he's got a bit of an Oz connection!
