In this video I show why I think the Make Noise 0Coast is the best piece of hardware to learn and experiment with modular synthesis. I show an overview of the instrument before then applying it towards making SFX for a 2D video game I'm making, showing my sound design process and some more advanced tips and tricks. - เพลง
Oh! I have another video which uses the 0-Coast as a way to teach the basics of modular synthesis, so if you’re new to the scene this could be a cool place to start: th-cam.com/video/Hcejwzc7YEo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=767_yhxI3Nhx2Fvm
The backing music is excellent!
Lovely to hear thank you :)
Immediately thought the same thing.
Agree! Very soothing.
I couldn't agree more. I started with a big Shared System in 2018, but the 0-coast taught me how to use it and it's NEVER going away.
Wooow I had the 0coast for the last 4 years and never did this square wave generated noise thing! It opens so much new possibilities, thanks man!!
You are so self sufficient its crazy to me
I agree the 0-coast is a gateway drug. It offers so many avenues in one little box. I keep learning and am still learning from it. I am just now venturing out into pairing other gear with it. I love the sounds and things that you can do with it.
This is so helpful and inspiring … thank you
Wow! Why didn't I discover this channel earlier? too good! I am a sounddesigner and 0-Coast user myself and love how you showed off the techniques! instant sub btw
Lovely work. Also a great mini lesson on game sound design.
Beautiful work flow, ideas, and video. Thanks for sharing.
The 0-Coast was my first semi modular in 2018. I sold it some time later. Last year a bought one again cos I missed it so much. Now it lives in my 7U Eurorack case. It just has that special timbre (maybe because of it's LPG) I couldn't recreate it even with a STO or DPO and Optomix. The Coast will always have a special place in my heart.
Great work. Keep ‘em coming ✨
That sound design for the game was absolutely amazing! Incredibly well done! Subbed!
beautiful machine. beautiful video. such a vibe ✨
What a great video about so much, I really appreciate how intentional your approach is. Also love my 0-Coast, my most enjoyed box of fun
Awesome video!! Thank you, gonna use this a lot!
Learned so much, thank you
Brilliant stuff!.
Genuinely entertaining to watch/hear your process ! Thank you 🙏
Nice to hear thank you :)
Really liked this - great ideas and a solid result, tx for showing your approach and process 👌
Thanks for watching, glad you got something out of it :)
I love this! So cool.
Cool bro, thanks.. I didn't know about that noise feature. Thanks!
Nice to see and hear your process!
Thanks Ally!
The 0-Coast was my first dip into modular as well and then I just went full eurorack after that point. It’s an amazing synth and you’re right, you’re thrust into a spot where you have to get to understand what’s going on to get what you want out of it. Though there is some normalization, the best bits are when you start experimenting, patching and making one thing influence another. Just thought I’d mention that before I forget. And now I’ll continue watching the second part haha. Patch away!
For me it appealed as ‘vaguely as close as I’ll ever get to a buchla!’
The doepfer dark energy was my prev-entry level to eurorack 😂
Admittedly I succumbed & bought a Rossum Morpheus (but that doesn’t count cos it’s awesome!)
A great little game and really loved your creative use of the 0-Coast and run through of its capabilities. It’s deceptively simple but capable of a wide range of sounds and fx 😊
Thank you
Fantastic!
That's really cool, man.
Strangely enough, im using the make noise 3 to get out of modular. Nice and chilled video bro. Im of "lunar lander" generation, so...🙌
Cool. I'm a long time 0 coast user, but making 'music' sometimes stops me from re-exploring it's incredible breadth. Nice one.
love this
I agree withy your view that the 0-coast is the best gateway into modular. Another thing that sets 0-coast apart is that it has lots and lots of visual feedback
Yeah good point, I love its design
That is a cool cool video, and very nice music.
Thanks! Kind of you to say :)
I'm waiting for my own..
Came here for the synth sounds, subscribed for the game making you do.
Thanks! appreciate it
I ended up selling my 0Coast for an MS20 but you are correct it forces you to think about synthesis in a different way. Really awesome sounds here nice work!
Thanks! Yeah I also sold my first 0Coast it’s a bit of a gateway drug into eurorack but buying it back again I really love it. MS20 also amazing though v different but it just sounds so good
Bought it on release and it was the start of my eurorack journey. Still have it today since it still integrates really well in my current rack (4 rows of 126HP). Really like how snappy the envelopes in combination with the low pas gate sound. For that reason. A typical patch I would use it for is to run some other oscillators from my rack thru the lpg of the 0-coast. And use the 0-coast oscillator to FM something else in the patch. Which is nice since I don't have that many analog FM sources in the rack.
Awesome, yeah it was the synth that got me into Eurorack too.
I so want to get into sound designfir games you lucky pup. Great vid, been looking between the o coast and the eowave quantrid swarm. 2 different beasts I know, but I'm gonna go for the eowave next me thinks
Also, what is this game, it looks awesome.
Nice! Do you have other videos showing how you create sound effects for video games using modular and semi-modular synths?
Thanks! I have a couple yeah: th-cam.com/video/jRQM3qDxQg8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uqenR8PzrDAe6eqI and m.th-cam.com/video/i94j9hvLTGE/w-d-xo.html
It's so interesting and refreshing seeing how you design sounds outside a computer. Let's be honest, you'd probably be much faster doing this within a DAW, no 0-Coast, no Strega, no Digitakt. Yet at the same time, you'd probably also be slower because there'd be _TOO_ many options. I really love the dedication and the focus
Sidenote: this reminds me when I saw a video of the sound design room within Apple's headquarters - I don't recall seeing traditional synths, just a computer, a few controllers, and crucially, a big rack of Eurorack.
My usual process is to use hardware and record long takes of experimentation, I’ll bring those takes into the computer and edit them down and use the edits as source sounds for future sound design. I use hardware because it’s more playful and intuitive and especially the behaviour of something like Strega with its noisy delay and physical touch points would be difficult to reproduce on the computer. Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!
@@SoundsMick Certainly. It sounds like I'm implying you're not using the computer at all, when in fact you do, especially for editing - I thought as much but wasn't clear enough. I still thought it interesting that you use the Digitakt in conjuction with the other gear. Thanks for replying!
@@vinylarchaeologist I appreciate the comment! Yeah digitakt can be a fun way to mutate samples on the fly tho that certainly slows things down haha
Super knowledge and practice without any baggage. Thank you for sharing. Where did you source the double headed patch leads please ?
They're called TipTop Stackable cables
@@SoundsMick thank you 🙂
Very well done and super helpful! I’m going to dust mine off and use it again. Have you considered submitting your games for the new Playdate system?
I would love to write a game for the Playdate! I have a cool idea for something too it’s just finding the time lol
Hey! Really beautiful sounds. Thanks for sharing!
What software do you use to program your 2D games in?
Thanks! I use Construct 3 to make games, it’s the quickest idea-to-game program I’ve used :)
@@SoundsMick Cool! I will check it out. Working on a project in school and i think this might be the right approach!!
Loved this! subbed, can't wait to hear / see more!
I bought a similar one off ‘2 many synths’ he makes them to order.
With the cntr … I like sending the pitch cv through for _slew_
Ooh, I bet you can get some feeling of place and space out of a strega. Heck, it's a challenge to not get atmospheric sounds out of it. Not what I would recommend for a beginner's first synth, but the 0coast fits that bill!
Yeah Strega is a strange beast lol
Hey! Question for you do you think pairing the minifreak with the 0coast is redundant or are they different enough sound wise where it makes sense. Also thinking about just pairing the minifreak with the Strega for effects
💙
I love it when the algorithim gets it right! Im a fellow gamedev with an interest in modular synth
Oh cool! What sort of stuff do you work on?
@@SoundsMick videogames. What, weren't you listening?
@@SoundsMick Im a freelance Unity developer (although switching to unreal atm) so most of my professional work is mobile games, VR & AR and games for expos & retail. But Im working on a heist game at for myself and hoping to start on some devlogs soon, hopefully incorporating my modular :)
Ive just been going thru your backlog, youve got some great videos!
I love the vibe of your lander game too btw :)
@@DougFromTheBayou Sounds really cool! I've subscribed to your channel if you post any gameplay I'll catch them. Heist game sounds fun :)
What rack are you using to hold the 3 items?
What is the stand you’re using here, and does it work nicely? All of the ones I’ve seen online don’t have any kind of support on top of the modules to prevent them from lifting up when patching, but yours looks like there actually is some kind of top constraint at the edges. The 3d printed stand I have is a little too flimsy to be pleasant to patch
I got it from Synths & Wood www.synthsandwood.co.uk/
Do you have an affiliate link? I’d like to show my support.
Oh so kind - if you want to support me you can check out my album here: sovnrecords.bandcamp.com/album/knots
No coasts on the moon luna landa✌️0-coast took me hook, line and synca
Is this game a remake of Thrust? Nice
Not heard of Thrust I will look it up!
An old BBC game
Why the windshield on the mic lol
Don’t have a pop shield and the mic very sensitive hah
Seriously inspiring techniques and use cases! Off to patch my 0-Coast 🫡
Ah cheers mate!
