This video is something I've been thinking about making for a while, creating a home for the music I write that sits outside of an album or soundtrack. Instead of aimlessly uploading jams and performances, I'm contextualising them with my thoughts and process more directly. I guess it's a VLOG? yucky.
For this episode, I talk about some of the instruments I've been using to write with including the Erica Synths Dada Noise System 2, Haken Continuum Mini, Expressive-E Osmose and Battery Operated Mini Mello.

My new album: sovnrecords.bandcamp.com/album/knots In this video I talk through my process of using a small ALM 52hp Eurorack Case to expand my percussion options within a setup. It is driven via a Digitakt which feeds into an African rhythm derived trigger module. Everything is then fed into an SP404. This is the basis for my attempt at creating and performing live music. Analogue Solutions Ample Review

Ample is a new synth by renowned designer Tom Carpenter of Analogue Solutions. I would describe it as being quintessentially Analogue Solutions. It has that iconic, luxurious sound that has carried through every machine Tom has created, this time coming with a particularly beautiful LPF and an array of generous interface and performance controls. I spent a month with this on loan from AS and en...

Day 22. Back on it after getting a bunch of work done and sorting my studio out. Thought I'd play with everyone's favourite map music Uncharted Worlds composed by Sam Hulick for 2007s Mass Effect, one of my favourite games and my fav in the ME series. I love all the film grain, lens flares and 70s synthy vibe of the first one, the other two are good too, but the 1st lives in my heart.

Day 2! Very simple today, I used the jam time to learn how to slice breaks on the @SynthstromAudible Deluge. Have used the Deluge for years but never done this on it before and...it's great! Like everything with the Deluge it kind of comes down to memorizing shortcuts, which is something that trips me up sometimes, but in its own way the Deluge is also very consistent in its design - even with ...

🎹✨ Haven't recorded anything for a while so getting back into the practice of it. Recently, I've been deep into learning the 1989 Yamaha SY77 FM synth. It's slower, but it allows for a depth of explora...

Nice!!!
sounds really cool, by any chance did you use the Erica Syntrx in any of these sounds?
I've been following your videos and your work, I am wondering, how do you incorporate your hardware and synths into game audio? What kind of video games do you usually work on?
Hello, thanks for watching! My sound design process is quite similar to what I show in this video, I’ll record long experimentations and then later fish for cool sounds using that experimentation as a ‘source’ element. I work right now at Sumo Digital in the UK, we make a large variety of titles, typically console / pc games of mid to large budgets.
@@SoundsMick have you used the syntrx in in some titles at Sumo Digital? I find it super cool and interesting tool for game audio sound design.
@@deckling823yeah I will have for sure, there’s a folder full of Syntrx sounds I’ve recorded on our shared source library at Sumo.
@@SoundsMick I saw that you also own a pulsar 23. Have you ever used it in game audio?
@@deckling823 Yeah I would say most things make their way into source assets for games that I later design from. There's nothing I would say that the pulsar or syntrx does that makes them particularly notable for game audio it's just they make interesting sounds and it's all about recording interesting sounds.
What is your audio routing ? Deluge goes into the octatrack ?
Nice. I gotta get an oxi one!!
Where do I get that game?
It isn’t released yet I’ll make a video when I put it out thought for sure :)
I’ve owned a few and Fusebox X has been my favorite sound. Not always easy in production scenarios but a glorious sound.
This feels less like a TH-cam video and more like im just over at me mate’s gaff and he’s telling me about his 0coast. And I mean that in the best way possible. Great primer, weirdly very few good tutorials for this machine kicking about.
Thanks!
Is there an input or manner to reset the sequencer in Ample?
Afraid I’m not sure I’ve since sent the synth back to analogue solutions now the review is done so I can’t check for you
I got my 0-coast and 0-ctrl last thursday. Less than a week ago. And I already loves it!!
Great concept for a vlog. The Continuumini is an amazing chameleon. I used it for a harmonica on a Duane Eddy tune I covered and I doubt anyone could tell (check my Bandcamp if you’re interested in hearing).
hah! That is quite impressive sounding harmonica
Really enjoying this format and the examples. Thanks for sharing!
Love this format. Would definitely listen to this as a podcast! Was so gutted when Esoteric Modulation stopped - my favourite bit was at the start when they shared short musical sketches they’d made using certain instruments/effects that had given them creative inspiration. This feels just like that!
I also really loved Esoteric Modulation!
@@SoundsMick Torn between the Continuumini and the Osmose. I just worry you can almost do too much with the Osmose that I’d be stifled by having so much potential. Whereas Continuumini is more limited so wondering if it’s easier to be creative with it. I guess it also comes down to interface differences. Could you pick a favourite out of the two?
@@60SecondsofSomaCosmos for me it is the Continuum, it’s so different. I would say harder to play, but it is still intuitive. You have to be gentle with it but the continuous surface is great even just for ‘effects’ sounds. I am constantly discovering new ways to play, a lot of sounds are quit off putting until you realise the playing technique required to make them sound good. As such I would recommend to find a sound you like and then stick with it as you learn. I might make a video talking about this stuff in more detail.
Nice video and format :)
Nice Vid, refreshing format. Cheers
thanks!
This format is great, you should definitely continue. I used to do monthly dumps of WIPs and clips from my shows etc but i never liked talking to camera so there was never really any context.
Thanks for the encouragement Ally! I’ll check out those videos if they’re still up
Splendid! Please keep these coming, fantastic format ❤
I really enjoy this format. As I see it, hearing the context, motivations, and connections around the work makes the work a richer experience. I also enjoy seeing the different explorations all gathered together here-the larger connections and ideas that tie them together become more audible this way. Do you think spending some more time with the Dada Noise System has changed the way you approach modular or, for example, the Syntrx II?
Thanks Kilo, really happy you like the format. For the Dada Noise System, it’s kind of wonderful and it is what made me want to get the Syntrx, I’ve a bit of a love / hate thing with modular at the moment, but having a designed system like the Dada really clicked for me. It’s quite expensive though, but it reminded me of how good Erica Synths stuff can be so went with the Syntrx which I am really enjoying using.
Awesome vid! This is a very good idea, very inspiring! Great jams too 👌 thanks for the shout out ❤
Thanks guys! Love that Mello
Hell yeah! This is such a nice spin on it! Nothing dramatic or over the top dogma and negative rules, but context and personality for days! I really enjoyed the finished video (for anyone reading he was kind enough to show me the draft and ask if including a clip from my video was cool with me) and it feels like a very good way to include some of the bits I often find missing. Great! Also monthly semi casual updates seems like a good idea, I might get inspired back and do something similar!
Thanks Kristoffer! Kind words and glad you liked it :)
Great interview. Michael I’d really love to see a video about your own journey getting into being a sound designer in the video game industry. I’m interested in following this path as I’m sure others are and it would be great to hear about your experiences Thanks for all the great content so far !
Thank you. It really looks like you got your money's worth.
This video is brilliant. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
What rack are you using to hold the 3 items?
I'm waiting for my own..
You both made such compelling conversation that I almost felt like an intruder 😅 Thanks for the wonderful insight, I'm grateful for all the idea-sharing!
I so want to get into sound designfir games you lucky pup. Great vid, been looking between the o coast and the eowave quantrid swarm. 2 different beasts I know, but I'm gonna go for the eowave next me thinks Also, what is this game, it looks awesome.
well done 🎹
Sick video, I was in a rut about what to do for a set on the weekend and borrowed a 0 Coast and this was the first video I watched and immediately nailed using it!
cant believe i stumbled upon this recent of an upload. excited to hear more about the setup. i just recently bought a digitakt and excited to use it with my eurorack
Ah cool! Digitakt is a classic am sure you'll love it.
Good stuff, nice thoughtful setup 👏
Really nice video thank you. Also, the album is really inspiring, I Just bought it on tape from Bandcamp. Please keep up the good work.
oh that's so kind! Thanks for ordering my album
I really love the fluttering/looping effect from Awakening. Just a lovely album altogether
@@lofido_music really nice to hear, thank you
now that the digitakt 2 came out i guess its not a good time to trade but if you dont need the digitakt overdrive / filter you could trade it for like a digitone. same form factor, enough sequencing and you have your melody machine.
That is probably a good shout! Tho I'm using all 8 midi tracks of the digitakt right now, I can't quite rely on the 404 for sequencing, it's just not as easy as the DT.
@@SoundsMick oh yeah i forgot the digitine has only 4 midi tracks but maybe something else could work
everytime i wanted to build a modular drum thing i got stuck on the i/o and sequencing bit. the thing you built has only a master out not an out per track. maybe ive just been overthinking it, it sounds good for sure.
For this combo of gear it works, but also if I want to process one voice differently I can just go straight out of the module itself, or mult it to do parallel processing.
What is the stand you have the ALM case on? Thanks
It is one of these modular instrument stands loci.life
Love seeing your workflow with this and that given a percussion focussed case it’s so different than I’d approach it. I love that about eurorack. Very cool idea sending irregular clocks to Zularic. It definitely invites you to get as funky as you want with it, how it’s set up. Even though it’s essentially a bunch of tables, I’d really like to mess with one at some point. Especially when you’re just looking to be in the middle of music instead of thinking too deeply of the beats. I like your ideal setup being something that can fit in a backpack. Feel like that’s really where those little ALM cases shine. My 4u definitely doesn’t fit in a backpack, 104 is quite sticky outy. Anyway, appreciate your videos and thoughts. I’ll look out for the next one.
Yeah sending the zularic irregular clock and cv modulating the offset parameters really open up the module to a high variety of patterns outside of the preset tables!
using midi note trains as clock sources is so underrated, honestly - you can really easily do that "dropped note" shifting of patterns that way by just... muting a step, and then things will start to rotate.
That just sounds incredible. Beautiful sounds coming out of that box!
Thanks mate!
Glad to hear someone say Digitact rather than Diggytact. Your videos are very inspiring. Ta
counterpoint; Elektron IS a swedish company, and they would pronounce digital as "diggytorl", more or less.
It’s English. One g. Not diggy
nice little setup. Looking forward to your take on the SSF drum modules. I was keeping an eye on them for quite some time, but I was worried that they are more geared for techno/harder sounds. Your groove sounds smooth, though. Well done.
Thanks! The SSF modules I think sound great, very complex sounding for analogue drum circuits. Rich sound
There’s so little out there about this synth, so I really appreciate your video - I’m SO close to getting myself one but I wish there was more online to help me decide! I’m torn between this and the Syntrx II, as far as I can see the Syntrx probably lends itself to more complex sounds? How complex can you get on the Ample? It seems more musical to me than the Syntrx but it’s hard to tell - I wish someone would make a video comparing them both!
Thanks glad you found the video useful! I would say you are correct the Ample is more naturally ‘musical’ where the Syntrx is more naturally ‘experimental’ - I used to have a Syntrx 1 and I used it mainly for sound design and sound processing. Both good options but depends what you would want to use one for.
Do you have an affiliate link? I’d like to show my support.
Oh so kind - if you want to support me you can check out my album here: sovnrecords.bandcamp.com/album/knots
This is so helpful and inspiring … thank you
Weird, I just yesterday ordered that same ALM case! It's seems like it'll be such a nice compact setup, and I can't wait to get some modules into it. Great videos lately mate! Case setup looks fun!
Thanks Pat! Appreciate it. Yeah I just love the size of case, it feels restrictive but creatively so.
Yeah! I love this compact case train that’s happening! I’ve been finding mine so fun. Albeit, I don’t have a monster case at all, the small case is the case. Looking forward to see if you share your adventures with that!
Damn smart setup. Keep up the great work
Great explanation! Which touch screen are you using for Ableton?
Thanks! It's an Ultrabook that folds in half. Samsung Galaxy Book 3. I think I'll make a little video on it as I've been asked this a few times from these videos.
Vera cool demo with this little monster😊 it would be nice to know how young the patches made exactly!?😢
Ah thanks, 5 years ago though I have no idea lol
@@SoundsMick this is pity.. I bougth this modul recently and it is very komplex in use. It heavy to control it i mean. But i know it is an awesome module. Do you still have it? Thanks for answering bro;)
Just think.... Aphex Twin was getting these sounds with extremely primitive gear like 30 years ago....
I don’t think this gear is much different tbh, the Noon is like lo-fi tech, it’s a novel idea but not very advanced technologically. But yeah interfaces have moved on and Aphex used what was available like the genius he is.
@@SoundsMick Modern lo-fi cant be compared or put on the same table as engineering of 30+ years ago. It simply can't be. The real magic sauce is realizing that Richie was modding and circuit-bending hardware before the internet and before 'lo-fi' existed as a genre. Everyone just needs to shut it and give Aphex his flowers. he engineered "Sound" from the ground up. There are even pictures of him on the net cutting his own PCBs in the 90's.. He really is a genius.
@@percyvolnar8010 yeah sorry I didn’t mean lo-fi as a genre. Aphex is the undisputed king, everyone agrees
Is this game a remake of Thrust? Nice
Not heard of Thrust I will look it up!
An old BBC game
Genuinely entertaining to watch/hear your process ! Thank you 🙏
Nice to hear thank you :)
