“1-3-5-shift”, I was practicing a similar movement today and like a guardian angel, Rich Brown came in clutch 😮‍💨👏🏿. now I’ll polish my fretboard shifts.

You lesson are so easy to pick up quickly.
It is amazing that teaching in a slow deliberate manner is so much better that a teacher who wants to impress you with his skills rather than teach.
    You are the best.

tough one when you've spent all your time doing the move with the 1st finger instead of the fourth. Another good lesson! Thanks Rich

Rich, this comment isn't so much just about this video but about your videos in general. I follow about 7 or 8 bass teachers, also some upright bass guys, and sometimes all it scrambles my mind a bit but when I come back here, to where I started again after a 25 year hiatus, you somehow sort things out for me with clarity. I have learned different shifts and micro-shifts but this one is tasty and practical, and I've added it to my toolkit. Something about your style and teatching method just puts things straight. Please keep it up. Thank you. From Los Angeles.

The first minute of this vid was a treat! The rest...well, i'll put it like this: i began playing bass 40 years ago, so by now i can say i'm not a newbie and not too poor a bassist. All the same this video of yours gave me something new to work on! Thank you Rich, your videos are ALWAYS useful! Keep up this hard, sterling work!

You are an amazing teacher. you take your time you speak slowly, clearly. your moves on the neck of the base are slow for us to follow.
You really take into consideration those of us who are truly beginners not like other teachers I have seen on TH-cam who go so fast you don't even know where their fingers are being positioned. So thank you very much.
    You are greatly appreciated.

Hey Rich, this lesson is a breath of fresh air! Most videos dealing with two octave scales on a 4 string bass employ akward hand shifts.
Using the upright bass approach (no ring finger) and shifting on the 1/2 steps solves this problem. For G major I like to play exactly as you did, EXCEPT instead of 1-3-4-shift (abcd) on the D string, I play: 1st finger(A) 2nd finger B shift 2nd finger to C, 4th finger D, then continue up to the G string as you did...
I find that this works on any mode as well.
I find that by omitting my ring finger on the E,A&D strings while employing finger shifts on the half steps, and then reverting back to one finger per fret positioning on the G string allows me to play two octave scales in any mode WITHOUT the akward hand shifts.
In my view no finger should have to shift more than a half step.

Thanks again, Rich. I knew this exercise, but I don’t remember if I learned it from you. I don’t normally play one finger per fret-I played DB first-so I usually do this exercise as 1-1-3-4 twice, then 1-1-2-4 twice. That’s what’s in my memory. I sometimes switch to one finger per fret as I move up the neck, but for the stuff I play, I’m mostly on the lower frets, and DB fingering works for me.

Hey Rich, i just thought i should let you know i ripped off your pentatonic scale where you combine the two shapes and have some notes double up. Combined with a couple of your sequential patterns it's a killer. It's a great way to sound better than i am.

Super stuff Rich, really clear explanation, great lesson. Quick question if I may, is there a reason why covering 1 3 5 shift as opposed to 1 shift 3 4? Like an upright.
Not a criticism at all, I'm sure you can do either :) Is there a pedagogical reason or perhaps you've observed students have more success with this?
Appreciate all you do, Thanks Chris.

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I find this 1 3 5 shift motion much more fluid than playing one note and immediately jumping a whole tone. For me, this feels better under the fingers.
