  • 25 /7/ 2021 Statement from Satakunta Osprey project about Ossi & Alma's two relocated chicks:
Many have asked about the two babies of Ossi and Alma moved to the second nest as a result of the unfortunate events on Midsummer Eve. The chicks were ringed and investigated during the move.
The inspector of the nest visited the scene and found that one of the chicks had passed away. It was surprising that the deceased baby was the one who survived the raven attack with seemingly minor injuries. The cause of death of the baby was no longer able to be concluded at that point. The relocated chick has a yellow ring SRS, which was added during the relocation. On Thursday 22.7 SRS was photographed in flight near the nest, so this story seems to have a happy ending.
Midsummer's Eve events showed once again that anything can happen at the nests approach something you can't possibly prepare for. Hopefully Ossi will find a good partner for next year. A good sign is that Ossi has not abandoned his nest place due to setbacks, but has lived there in the last few days. And best of all, we've also seen females with Ossi on the nest. Next spring we'll see how the story continues in Ossi's nesting swamp.
The presence of ravens at Ossi's nesting swamp has also sparked discussion. However, they have been living in the same areas for a long time and they haven't been more harmful to the weather. The weathers have been nesting in that nest continuously since 2005; the first failure came only the other year as a result of a visit tby a goshawk and the second setback this year because of the raven.

This video clip: After the tragic attack this morning by a raven who killed one chick, injured a second and wounded mum Alma forcing her to the ground where she was then attacked and killed by a fox ( • WARNING graphic attack... ) it's a relief to see dad Ossi return. He flies in at 18.16 Finnish nest cam time with fish, one chick very interested, and had a few pecks when Ossi didn’t feed them. Ossi left the fish on the nest and flew off, the other chick (the injured one) started moving slightly while the first chick tucks in. The sad little body of the chick killed by the raven remains in the centre of the nest.
At 18.23 the second chick moves in and has a nibble while the first one is really going for it, seizing the food enthusiastically. Not in this clip, the livestream has now gone down, talk on the chat says the two chicks are being removed and taken for safe relocation. The chick that was killed was the youngest chick, mods say nest 3 (Nuppu & Ahti) is not suitable for these two older chicks because of the age difference.
Statement from the Satakunta Osprey Project:
The progress of nesting became virtually impossible after Alma's death. Such small chicks cannot be flown by an Osprey male alone, i.e. fed, defended and protected from heat. Numerous experts were consulted on the follow-up and it was finally concluded that the only option for the larger chicks is in another nest.

    The nest:
Nest #1 is located in the Satakunta region in Western Finland. Ospreys have nested there since 2005. The male Osprey, Ossi, has inhabited the nest since 2014. He has a ring on his right leg and according to the ringing data he hatched in Karkku, Sastamala in 2009. Alma, the female, doesn’t have a ring and therefore her age and hatching location are unknown.
Ospreys have nested at the site from 2005 through 2020. In 2019 Alma and Ossi’s nesting failed due to a Goshawk attacking the nestlings. Nevertheless, the pair returned the following year and raised three fledglings. Since 2017 Alma and Ossi raised a total of eight fledglings.
Appropriate permits have been obtained for the description of the nests from both landowners and the Southwest Finland Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.

First time to this channel, TH-cam algorithm I guess. I guess this is the circle of life cruel as it may be. Interestingly enough we have a hawk around here (red-tailed hawk I believe) and this year a group of blackbirds (amateur bird watcher mind you) so not sure if they are blackbirds, crows, ravens or what. Since they have been here during the day I sometimes hear them carrying on definitely like they are after something. I did onetime investigate and the hawk was sitting on a tree branch and the blackbirds were diving at the hawk and making a lot of noise. The hawk did fly away but the blackbirds did as well in the direction of the hawk. We have loads of squirrels around here, rabbits, and this year 3 sets of Canadian geese with babies. There is also a holding pond close-by. I knew blackbirds (crows, ravens?) were very smart but I didn’t know they would attack chicks in the nest. They all have to eat but it’s still hard to witness. I am glad this video was in my recommend. I apologize for my ramble.

Zed, you, or someone else made the same comment in the attack video. The truth is that life for these creatures Is challenging. An Osprey's chance of making it to two years of age is less than 50%! I can tell you heartbreaking stories involving my local nests, that have occurred every single year that I've been observing them.
In fact, one situation was very similar to this. The female osprey disappeared, and the male worked valiantly to raise the chicks for weeks, only to eventually have them picked off by Great Horned Owls!
These birds didn't get covid, and there's nothing unusual about this year. This is simply bird life, and we've just found out about it because of technology.

If you read the description, you'll see that the nest is in a remote location with a nest cam streaming live, from which this clip was taken. There is no person nearby holding a camera making a recording. Also, please keep in mind it is illegal to disturb birds during the nesting season so if someone by chance happened to be nearby, it would be a criminal act to intervene. Nature is harsh! But the best we can do is make sure wildlife has the best conditions in which to live, that is, no pollution, no de-forestation or over-development, and no hunting, trapping or interefering - just leave them alone to live out their wild lives.

Even if they could help, Alma fell km away from the nest, no way somebody sitting near the nest, could have run over to the fox to protect Alma. One must realize that osprey do attack raven, so raven attacked osprey. This is the sad war wild animals face to survive. We are so fortunate as people to be able to mostly avoid these struggles, but as a result, human impacts come at a cost to these wild birds. More birds die from human related causes than natural predators. So insteas of being mad at the raven or fox, consider that humans are the real enemy of osprey and let that put this event into perspective.

The Osprey project managers made the decision to remove the surviving chicks after the attack which killed their mum, and relocated them to another nest to be fostered by the resident pair of Ospreys. This was done because it’s not possible for one parent alone to protect and provide food for chicks. After the chicks were relocated, the surviving male parent Ossi returned to this nest a few times before leaving on migration. It’s hoped he will return as usual in the spring and raise a new family with a new mate.

Ravens are big, powerful and smart. It's thought Alma may have been injured flying into a tree in the battle, and thus unable to fly, forced to the ground where the raven was able to overcome her. She fought valiantly, the fight was a good 15 minutes long before the raven felt sufficiently safe from her to return to the nest for the chicks. The actual cause of the chick's death has not been revealed.
