  • 25 /7/ 2021 Statement from Satakunta Osprey project about Ossi & Alma's two relocated chicks:
    Many have asked about the two babies of Ossi and Alma moved to the second nest as a result of the unfortunate events on Midsummer Eve. The chicks were ringed and investigated during the move.
    The inspector of the nest visited the scene and found that one of the chicks had passed away. It was surprising that the deceased baby was the one who survived the raven attack with seemingly minor injuries. The cause of death of the baby was no longer able to be concluded at that point. The relocated chick has a yellow ring SRS, which was added during the relocation. On Thursday 22.7 SRS was photographed in flight near the nest, so this story seems to have a happy ending.
    Midsummer's Eve events showed once again that anything can happen at the nests approach something you can't possibly prepare for. Hopefully Ossi will find a good partner for next year. A good sign is that Ossi has not abandoned his nest place due to setbacks, but has lived there in the last few days. And best of all, we've also seen females with Ossi on the nest. Next spring we'll see how the story continues in Ossi's nesting swamp.
    The presence of ravens at Ossi's nesting swamp has also sparked discussion. However, they have been living in the same areas for a long time and they haven't been more harmful to the weather. The weathers have been nesting in that nest continuously since 2005; the first failure came only the other year as a result of a visit tby a goshawk and the second setback this year because of the raven.

    This is a remote nest cam streaming live. No camera operators are present. Footage starts at 09.52 with the family peacefully on the nest, shows the raven doing a fly-by of the nest at 10.01 and ends at 11.25 with Ossi alarm calling repeatedly after the raven attacked and wounded Alma leaving her on the ground unable to fly and then being taken by a fox. Footage copyright Satakunta Osprey project, links at the bottom.
    The raven attack started with the fly-by at 10.01. It returned at 10.30 to be chased by Alma into the trees resulting in the sustained attack on her - persistently attacked Alma on the ground, for more than 15 minutes, the fight is visible in the trees in front of the nest. It returned to the nest at 10.45 with Alma's feathers on its beak, and attacked the chicks, killing one and injuring another, leaving the third unharmed before being chased away by Ossi with quite an aerial fight backwards and forwards over and around the nest. The fox came along about 11.20, Alma was still alive and fought the fox before it carried her off.
    What provoked the sustained raven attack? Perhaps it has its own young nearby to defend? But who knows why. Just tragic for the family. The two surviving chicks have been removed and relocated on a non-camera nest with only one chick in hopes those adults will accept them and raise them with their own chick.
    Statement from the Satakunta Osprey Project:
    The progress of nesting became virtually impossible after Alma's death. Such small chicks cannot be flown by an Osprey male alone, i.e. fed, defended and protected from heat. Numerous experts were consulted on the follow-up and it was finally concluded that the only option for the larger chicks is in another nest.

    Nest #1 is located in the Satakunta region in Western Finland. Ospreys have nested there since 2005. The male Osprey, Ossi, has inhabited the nest since 2014. He has a ring on his right leg and according to the ringing data he hatched in Karkku, Sastamala in 2009. Alma, the female, doesn’t have a ring and therefore her age and hatching location are unknown.
    In 2019 Alma and Ossi’s nesting failed due to a Goshawk attacking the nestlings. Nevertheless, the pair returned the following year and raised three fledglings. Since 2017 Alma and Ossi have raised a total of eight fledglings.
    Appropriate permits have been obtained for the description of the nests from both landowners and the Southwest Finland Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.

      Fascinating events and remarkable that so much of it (including the flight and the attack by the fox) was all captured on the fixed remote camera! Also, what a story for the Osprey pair with the 2019 nest attacked by the Goshawk!

      @@folkq Fortunately the Goshawk stayed away this year so at least one chick got to fledge, albeit on another nest with foster parents. The male Ossi has been seen several times with a female stranger, so it's looking good for his story to continue next year, and he & Alma fledged 9 chicks so her legacy will continue too.

    How do these nest cams work? Are they manned? Manned occasionally? Automatically alert with activity/movement? Just wondering because of the zooming that occurred. How was the cam able to zoom in on the fox? Automation? Or, someone just happened to be manning the cam when the fox came along and they zoomed in? Interesting.

      I use cameras like these when I'm helping others find/trap lost pets. I have an app on my phone that alerts me everytime there is movement. Which is great, but can also be very annoying lol. I can zoom in/out, listen, use my voice to talk to the pet or scare something away, and I also have an alarm or loud beeper I can use for certain things. These cameras are reasonably priced, the wifi service for them is what's costly.

    The title includes a fox attack. I did not see a fox in this film at all. The mother disappeared for a long time but maybe it takes that long to find food. Was that the mother watching the raven attack and kill one of the babies? I thought it was a third chick.

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fox is seen as a red blur in the forest when the camera zooms in, you can see movement and a white blur in the forest, that is the mother Osprey who was injured fighting the Raven and fell to the floor of the forest. The three birds on the nest are all defenceless chicks who are not yet able to fly.

      Answer: Hawks, eagles & owls predate crows & ravens and their chicks. However crows will frequently attack their predators when they get the chance, ganging up on them in big groups causing the predator to fly away. This is called 'mobbing' (매, 독수리, 올빼미는 까마귀와 까마귀와 그 새끼보다 앞서 있습니다. 그러나 까마귀는 기회가 있을 때 종종 포식자를 공격하여 큰 무리를 지어 날아갑니다. 이것을 '모빙'이라고 합니다.

    How the hell does an osprey lose to a raven? Osprey have beaks and talons like hooks specifically for attacking. The raven doesn’t have any of that

    • @GeemeffGeemeff
      @GeemeffGeemeff  ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly does - Google raven for a close up view, and check out that beak! Ospreys aren’t designed for close up fighting - they’re fish eaters with talons for gripping, not fighting live prey like birds, small mammals and reptiles. Normally the female would have been able to see off the raven by driving it away but must have been injured in the forest flying through the trees and then fallen to the ground unable to fly. And that’s where the raven was able to attack her, and ultimately the fox was able to get her.

      The raven was just acting normally, it did appear to want to eat and started plucking one chick before finding a piece of fish on the nest and taking that away instead. It's not correct to use words like 'demonic' and 'possessed' to wildlife, nature does not follow human values.
