I really like how the show expands on the source material of the comics and makes the storylines more compelling this way. You can understand Shapesmith's desire for wanting to explore the stars if given the chance, but at the same time you don't feel sorry for him since he left an innocent man to die on an alien planet and take his place, which lead to untold disasters for his people and now Earth. You can tell that he never meant any ill intentions with his actions, but it doesn't change the fact that what he did was horrible and that he never once considered the consequences of his actions.
It’s strange that the show wanted him to have no consequences, because Invincible killed a whole bunch of other Martians just to save the one that nearly got Earth enslaved.
