Anybody else feel like Michelle needs to send that lady the countless articles about the positives of flexible seating? Particularly the positive impact flexible seating has on reading. Sounds like that "reading specialist" is a bit behind the times. Michelle, you are fantastic! Thank you for thermometer vs thermostat analogy. I will definitely use that 😀.
Jenniffer McCoy I was wondering if an observed teacher could mention flexible sitting to the observer or ask what kind of research she has that backs up her concern? Can you give a person that comes to observe you feedback?
Amen to that too!!!! I tell my (8th grade) kids that I don't care if that stand on their heads just so they are engaged in the lesson and getting their work done. Its called DIFFERENTIATION ..... Of course the split second my kids are off task; I re-direct their attention and if that doesn't work - they are re-directed right back to their desk.

Sorry you had a bad observation, don't let that define you as a teacher! I will say as a teacher myself (who spent many years going in early and staying late) you need to take time for yourself... you can't care for your students if you don't care for yourself! You will burn yourself out!!! I wouldn't want to see that happen because you seems like a wonderful teacher. Keep in mind there is no such thing as a perfect teacher!!! Teaching is more about building relationships and connecting with your students to inspire a love of learning vs anything else!!

I am in my 16th year of teaching. I taught 1st grade for 10 years and this is my 6th year teaching kindergarten. Even as a veteran teacher I can say that you are always learning. It's one of the things I love most about the teaching profession! I love watching your videos and I can tell that you are a great teacher! However, it seems that the extra time you put into your job is a bit excessive. We all want to do amazing things for our students, but staying up until 2 am on a regular basis is crazy! You are going to seriously BURN OUT if you haven't already and an overly stressed and tired teacher is no good for her students. I learned this lesson when I had children of my own, at which point my priorities changed and I simply could not spend so much time on my job. I still receive a score of "highly effective" on my evaluations every year, even though I walk out of my classroom at 3:00, don't take work home and go to bed at 8:00 every night. Just something to consider. I think your students (and staff) are so lucky to have someone that is such a hard worker as you are, and someone that is so dedicated to the job. But you have to take care of YOU first!
I had to hear these same words from a fellow teacher. It's not perfect but it's better this year. I leave about an hour earlier this year.
Super advice!! I taught and was totally burnt out by year 3. You can't let teaching consume you. It will. You never get the return for all the extra effort. You just have to let it go.
This is good to hear because I am starting teaching as a third career, with two school aged kids and I am simply not going to be able to devote swathes of out of school time to the job. I am going to have to do what I can do being an efficient time manager and prioritiser.
I leave at 4 everyday because I have a baby to go home to. In bed by 8 PM! I don't know how she does it! I'm fortunate to have volunteers and helpers but I also thought it's excessive to lesson plan all night everyday. I work on lesson planning once a week and am also marked highly effective. I hope she gets some rest next school year.

Honestly, it makes me so angry as a teacher when administrators make teachers feel defeated. Unfortunately, you're right. Much of what we do is unnoticed. Administrators need to remember that we are still human, and nothing is perfect. We are judged by the behavior of 6-7 year olds, and sometimes things are unpredictable.

I feel you, in my last observation my administration told me I always looks unhappy at other times in the school not while I'm teaching.... I am extremely happy. I dont see what my face looks like has anything to do with my teaching abilities. it was literally written into my evaluation to work on looking happier....
That would never be said to a male teacher.
I had a principal say that I didn't look happy in an evaluation. I said immediately and firmly back "I'm happy" but I wish that I had confronted him more on the comment.
In your words"suck it up, buttercup!" Lol. You know what you do and that is all that truly matters! I'm a 34 year veteran teacher and I so enjoy and learn from you. Be true to yourself and for future observations think "screw them ( observers) and just focus on your kiddos, because you can never be sure what they are looking for, so just focus on what you want! Their opinions are their own, and yours are yours!
Vanessa Dotson best advice ever. As a 20 year veteran myself, that is what I do. I gauge my teaching by my students: are they happy, are they making progress, are they engaged. Otherwise I could give two shits about what some outside observer who sees my class once a year for an hour thinks.
I definitely agree with you that it shouldn’t matter whether a student stands, kneels, or sits in a chair while learning as long as they are comfy! So many of my students get tired of sitting and ask me to stand while doing their work. It is sad to see that they chose something so minor and irrelevant to focus on. You are an amazing teacher and definitely serve as an inspiration to me and hundreds of others!
Omg I started tearing up while you were talking about your observation. This happened to me this school year for the first time and I could relate 100% to how you were feeling. This is why so many good teachers end up leaving the profession. Out of all my friends from college I'm one of the few who still teach and this is my sixth school year teaching.

So many administrators, supervisors,etc. these days are out of touch with what goes on in the classroom now. I have been teaching 21 years, all in elementary and I get some great ideas from you! hi Michelle. i'm a teacher from Algeria. it's in north Africa. i teach middle school students.i love your vlogs very much. but when i watch them i realise how lucky you are as a teacher in the USA. you have everything you need: great tools and materials, small number of students, very beautiful and well equiped schools... it's totally different in my country. only the private schools can afford a welcoming environment for the kids. in my school for example, i have 6 classes of 50 kids each. can you imagine that !!! i'm always tired at the end of the week ! also we teachers are not taken care of. i remember when i first started teaching, i was so scared because i had never been in front of students before. i can't tell you how difficult and stressful was my first year. but i managed to finish it. and here i am, still teaching despite the many problems we face every year.
you are a super teacher because you are so dedicated to your job and kids.we cannot escape from being criticised but just think that this person is not with you when you prepare your lessons , when you stay late at night to design attractive and interesting activities to your kids or when you deal with some disrespectful kids... so don't feel defeated. you're awesome.

We are rich in resources but education is not as valued as it should be. Yes, we are so incredibly blessed. I absolutely agree but what we cannot buy is respect for teachers and educators and value for education. I love teaching ESL. Love families who stress education still but it is such a sad state of affairs how teachers are not valued anymore. So much more is required of us. I teach 8th grade and about 80% of my job s being a social worker or therapist.

concerning the collection of the students' data, it's something that we do for us. i like to keep track on my learners' performances. the schools or the inspectors ask us to follow the learners' development and achievements but look only for the end of the terms' results, ie; in December, March and June. :)

I'm not a teacher, but I LOVE your channel. I'm a mom of four and it irritates me beyond belief when amazing teachers like you are made to feel like they're not doing a good job. Teachers like you are not the norm and it's sad. If teachers were appreciated the way they should be, there would be more teachers like you. Please know that you're doing a great job and you are appreciated by the parents and students. I know it's not always apparent, but it's true.
I love the way that you embrace the challenge you faced and overcame it. Sometimes observers have no clue what goes on in the classroom. You are a great teacher. Stay strong and positive.

Hello "teacher best friend", I complete understand your frustration about the observation. I have been in your shoes before. Most people outside of your classroom truly don't see the factors that you have to deal with all while still teaching the content. Sometime I used to feel like most administrators forgot what it was like to be in the classroom when they come and do observations. I am happy that you had your venting sessions and you chose to be the thermostat and control the situations. You are a fantastic teacher and your students are very lucky to have someone as dedicated as you are for them. Continue to be great and I will continue to support you. Thank you for sharing, people don't usually talk about things like that and it reassures all of us that we are doing the best for our kids and there are others out there who are going through similar experiences. (not that it really makes it easier on anyone)
#2. For my initial screening interview it was pretty generic questions: Why do you want to teach in this area? Tell me about how you teach about diversity/different cultures? What would your principal say are your strengths? What would they say are your areas of growth? They have always been pretty quick and short, I think they are just making sure there are no "red flags"

Michelle, I've been watching your videos for several months, and I look up to you so much. I will be graduating in one year. I am so excited, but everyday I worry about the negative things that come with teaching such as observations, time management, difficult students, etc. But you honestly make me feel like I can get through anything. Yes you break down, but you get right back up and I really admire that. I hope to be half as great of a teacher that you are! ❤

Im not a teacher, but I can only imagine the amount of stress you face everyday. I'm sorry that this observer critiqued you for such minor things. You put so much into what you do, and while I'm sure that it's difficult one of these days one of those kids is going to tell you the impact you had on their life. I am a 2nd year and we get observed a lot our first 3 years by more than one person. It is so nerve racking and the kids notice I act a little different or I even stutter from shaking lol. I have cried so many times over all the things they want me to work on, but I take it with a grain of salt. My mentor told me that they have to find areas for you to improve or just think about new ideas, and sometimes it's something that you might not agree with. It's hard having others come into your classroom with a magnifying glass, but it gets better! You are an incredible teacher. I feel like you will do great no matter what grade you teach.
That woman should be more concerned with learning not about these little things. How soon people forget what it is like to be in a classroom. That woman has no clue. You have, however, ever right to feel frustrated and sad. Just know that you are a great teacher.
I don't work in a district school , so I don't have to deal with that too much. I do however, work crazy hours as well, so I began doing one nice thing for myself a day. Today I'm getting my hair dyed /under lights ! I'm so excited

your vitamin D may be extremely low. Because I would always feel tired no matter how much sleep I got. Now I take a very high dose once a week prescribed by my Dr and it has made a huge difference!

I definitely understand your struggle! How I get through those nitpicking observations (that's what I call them), I tell myself that whoever is observing me needs their job too so if I'm perfect there is no need for them. So they have to find something wrong or they are out of a job. With that being said I brush it off because like you said they saw a snapshot and I know what I do everyday. Don't need them to validate me. We're almost done with the school year! Keep pushing! You are awesome!

I wouldn't put it past your admin/supervisor to be upset that you are leaving the district and retaliating! Maybe they want you to look less desirable to your new district. You were just nominated to be teacher of the year! Who knows... On another topic... what do you use for teeth whitening? Hi! I'm a rising 7th grader and I love your videos. When I was younger, I "taught" my stuffed animals and loved making little worksheets for them. Then I thought it was stupid so I stopped. And watching your videos that I'm so obsessed with, made me remember how much teaching is so very fun! I hope that some day I can be as great of a teacher as you. You are very amazing and impressive and, if it helps, if I was your supervisor I wouldn't find anything to criticize you on. Keep up the great work!

Hi Michelle! My name is Camille and I've been watching your vlogs for awhile. I've been in your shoes! I'm 25 year old first grade teacher living in Texas. This is my 3rd year teaching first grade. I was like you my first year. Spending WAY too much time on school things, bringing work home, working on weekends, buying a ton of stuff for my classroom, and feeling defeated. It's not worth it! I came to the conclusion that I am not only a teacher. I'm a person. And there's things outside of school that make me happy and who I am. Teaching is not my only purpose. Teaching doesn't define who I am. Teaching is just something I do. So, since that first year, I've put less energy into it. I do what needs to be done and cut out the unneeded fluff. I use my time more wisely and effectively. I do school stuff at school. I get to school early and I plan each day for the NEXT week. This way I don't feel stressed and don't have to work on lesson plans over the weekend. I use every break I have wisely on important tasks. This way, I have a life. I have time to rejuvenate and relax and destress and focus on other bigger parts of my life. I leave my school bag at school. Nothing feels better than leaving school with just my purse and lunch box. I don't stay late. I don't go up to school on the weekends. I needed boundaries. School happens at school. I already devote so much time there throughout the week, I don't need to take up my personal time for it. I've never been happier or more calm or stress free. I am still a great teacher and get things done. Partly because I take care of my whole self. I go to bed by 9 every night. I eat 100% raw plant based foods so my body is properly fueled with nutrients it needs. I don't drink caffeine. I don't push my body. I listen to my bodies signals. Taking care of your body and listening to its cues is so important. This is just my personal story. I hope it can help. I feel for you so bad because I've been where you've been. To me, being so wound up in teaching and being perfect was exhausting and took away from my personal joy and contentment and vitality. Let some of it go. I don't spend hours thinking about school. I think about school when I'm at school. It helps to not be so wrapped up in it, which helps me not get in a tizzy over things people may say. It's just school. It's just a small piece of my bigger life. Do the best you can, but don't over do it. It's not healthy.

I think having a to-do-list is a great way to keep yourself on track. If you could please give me advice on how to get through your first year of teaching I would greatly appreciate it! I'm hoping to find this state of balance because I'm close to throwing in the towel! I'm curious, how do you plan for an entire week in one day? Does that include all subjects, small group instruction, and analyzing data? When does all the grading of daily assessments and testing assessments happen? I struggle to keep work out of the home or after hours. I just simply can't get it all done between the hours of 8 am and 2:20.
Candice Acosta Hello Candice! I go into school at around 6:30. My school doesn't start until 8:00, but students come in around 7:35. So, from 6:30-7:30 each morning, I start planning for the next week. No, I don't do it all in one day. I usually work on my lesson plans each morning Monday- Wednesday. Then Thursday and Friday mornings before school I pull out resources, make copies, etc. I grade during my conference time which is when kids are at specials.
I so needed to hear this! This is my first year teaching and I came in super late in the game bc the other teacher quit right at Christmas so I am her "replacement teacher" and trying to do my best to get my kids caught up for testing had literally been draining the life from me! (i teacher ELA 6th grade) but I am putting a stop to it before it gets any worst

I'm a sophomore in college to become a teacher and I watch blogs like this so I can see what I'm getting myself into and kind of help me "shadow" the teacher. You should make more videos because I hate when teachers spend so much time and energy dealing with school and not putting themselves first. I know for a fact that will not be me! So glad you just reassured me that it was possible to leave school at school! ❤️ Teachers don't get paid enough to think about teaching every second if every day. So not worth it. You can definitely be great at what you do without the extra! 😘

I am in my 2nd year of teaching kindergarten and it is still overwhelming for me. I like to watch your videos when I'm getting ready in the morning. I am so impressed by your skill and dedication to teaching! I have been a teacher many years (30), and I am always so amazed by the insights and teaching strategies that you already excell at that it has taken me years to learn (and that I'm still trying to master). You should be so proud!
I have been through so many similar situations, and I felt the same way you are feeling -- because we care! Don't let those who spend their time "majoring on the minors" make you feel defeated. What you do in the classroom for your students is what really matters!

I'm only in my second year of college and decided to switch over to the education field and now I'm behind because I started out taking classes for nursing. My heart goes out to you. From everything I have seen, you are an incredible teacher and I have seen that there are MANY teachers - myself included and I've been teaching for 34 years - who are learning from you. It really sounds as though the person observing you was validating her position by finding things wrong. I agree with someone else who said that she mustn't have been able to find anything important to critique, so she was just getting picky. A kneeling student is absolute pathetic to pick on. My students LOVE kneeling. Just keep being the amazing teacher you are and try not to keep any of that woman's rubbish in your heart.

Word of advice from someone who is a 30 year veteran.... half of the time, those who give bad observation are former teachers who were ineffective and are jealous of your motivation and drive. I had an observation like that once, whatever the lady said went in one ear and out the other... I continue what I knew was best for my kids and my test scores went up drastically... so I failed the observation, but my kid passed the state test.
I appreciate how honest and real you are being to everyone on the internet. Not many people would even admit that they ever feel defeated or overstressed from their jobs. I think you are overworking yourself to be honest, but I know it comes from wanting to be good at your job & really giving your all to your students, & that is amazing. They will always remember you, I think. You're doing amazing, regardless of how you may feel or what another teacher may say or even your students say. Teaching is probably the hardest job out there, honestly. I tried it and I had to quit, I just couldn't do it. I truly commend you.

being a student who is unable to sit down and stay sitting for a long period of time really erks me how that observer thought a student sitting on the ground, which doesn't make any sense. yes I'm in hs, and have a rubber chair cover that keeps me in place but for a second grader they haven't fully matured, you're a great teacher and you don't have 800 eyes around you. going into teaching was your dream, keep it going!

As a first year teacher, I love watching your videos because of the time/effort you put into your classroom. I often wish I could do the same, but you seriously motivate me to try harder next school year when I have a bit more resources. Observations are seriously scary and I also feel that they nitpick to find the negative parts without focusing on any of the positive. It can be disheartening. I can tell just from all your videos that you are an AWESOME teacher!!! Most people that come observe in the classroom have not had their own classroom in so long they can't understand this new generation of students and parents. You do an amazing job! From a teacher to a teacher...we do so much for our kiddos and hardly ever get recognize. Take time to care for yourself and feel reenergized. Great job on your positive thinking! Outsiders have no idea what it takes to teach and therefore, their lack of experience and critique on our teaching does not matter. We do it for our kiddos and for no one else.
Looking back now-I am glad you got out of that district if that is how they 'support' you!

I completely agree -- how can someone who was in your room for an hour have that much criticism when they don't even know what it's like?! Plus we all know kids act differently when observers come in and we are extra nervous too. I would've cried too and I can't believe their big critique was something so small. Who cares if a kid was kneeling?!?! We come to school to learn. You're doing great things and I look up to you so much! 100% accurate of your breakdown of the situation. I had similar things and like I had scenarios where I was blamed for parents being upset, and then the next day they the parent said they read the situation wrong, the parent praised my work and said how their kid had improved etc. The kids all the time used to write kind notes in their books and homework saying nice things when they were supposed to answer the question, they used the context to talk about me etc. But yet management was always criticizing, saying this and that error, saying nothing nice at all, and I feel that's just how people are. Some people see half a cup empty and some see half a cup full.

I enjoy how candid you are in your vlogs. Some teachers fake it or spend all of their time gripping. I love that mini pep talk you gave yourself to pull yourself out of your funky mood. You are really good at capturing what the first five years of teaching are like. In truth, your vlogs and those like yours are amazing and inspiring. Teaching within itself is trial, error, and a refinement process.
You are not a horrible teacher. You are a wonderful teacher. I just think maybe sometimes you need to plan ahead more. However, you put a ton of time, work, and money to make your classroom a wonderful environment. Please don't feel bad. You are amazing and an inspiration. Keep your head up, pretty girl.
Remember, those that can teach. Those that can't are in Central Office. You are a super teacher and do so much for your kids.

You are right, as teacher we need to self motivate ourselves. I admire that you woke up the next day and decide to lift your head up and go to work. At the end of the day the students need you and anything you do or make is for them.
Good Morning! Thank you for sharing and being so honest! Within my ten years of teaching, I have totally been through observations where I felt defeated as well. Came home crying and just feeling so low. Although, the next day you just have to move on, and continue to do what you know is best for your class. You had such a positive attitude afterwards and picked yourself right up by going to McTeacher Night! Good for you! I look forward to your videos every Saturday! You always inspire me!!!

I agree with you about observers needing to give positive feedback. While constructive criticism is sometimes necessary, the way that it is framed is really important, and it should always be paired with positive feedback, and should be given in a way where you feel supported and encouraged not just stamped down and defeated. The first two years I taught I was only given negative feedback, I was never recognized or encouraged, and it made me want to quit (and honestly on a personal level it made me spiral further into depression because I was putting my all into it and it didn’t seem worth it).
Thank you for being so real and honest. I am about to start my final placement in one month. This school will be quite different to my previous experiences. I really appreciate your showing us your vulnerable side. Teachers are real people with feelings. Crazy how you're being observed by teachers who have been out of the classroom for so long and wouldn't be able to do it themselves. You're doing a great job!

I want to say thank you for being vulnerable with us. I have been through those ups and downs. It's refreshing and empowering to know I'm not alone. I really liked your positive attitude and how you turned it around and didn't let it define you.
It seems like she was just trying to find something to nitpick! I'm a literacy paraprofessional right now and I let my students sit, stand or kneel during our group time as long as their focused and learning. I don't understand how that was a valid critique at all. You're a fabulous teacher and I love your mindset!

I'm in my 4th year of teaching and I certainly know where you are coming from. I will tell you that administration does not see what we put in "after hours". I, too, put in hours and money. We do this for the students. I made up my mind the first year I taught that everything I do is for the students. Since you are so close to break, you are pushed to your limit. You are an exceptional teacher. Please know that I am praying for you.
I am a special education teacher, and you are a 150% correct! If the student is at the table and learning that is what is important! Teachers now more than ever, are putting in numerous hours of their time and cash.

I am a homeschool mom of 4. At the 51.32 mark the stress was setting in. My heart melted when you were holding back tears.
