I really enjoy this setup series, along with your other videos. I used to be a Kindergarten teacher for 6 years and now I homeschool my kids since 2019. Sometimes I miss the fun of a new classroom setup etc so it’s nice to live vicariously through you! ❤ You have a beautiful space so far!
Your room is looking great! I gave up my teacher desk years ago and my small group area also doubles as my "teacher desk". I did it for the same reason as you, big kid desks take up more space.
Welcome to the desk free crew! It was the best decision I ever made in my previous classroom 🥰. Loving your new set up and wishing you a wonderful school year!
Michelle, Place a clear plastic Franklin desk riser under your document camera. The lifted document camera will allow you to show more on your whiteboard, while teaching, and it will buy you teacher storage space beside and under your document camera at the front of the room. It’s such a good thing.
Happy Saturday, Michelle! Your classroom is looking fantastic! I love how nice the Sterilite snap bins look in your cabinets. They're so organized and easy to access. The changes you made make a lot of sense and look great in the space. I wish you well as you continue setting up! 💜
Thank you for all of your helpful tips! I've used so many of them for my classroom. I need to get control of my cubby situation. Can you tell me about your cubby organization and usage expectations for students? I know that student backpacks are stored on the hooks, but what items go in the black bins above and the colored bins in the cubbies?
I wonder if you could move the mini "teacher desk" to the other side of the TV so you're right next to the supplies, and use a second student desk to give you a little more space
I’m so happy for you. I wish I was still in Texas; we would have coffee! Glad you are teaching again. Texas curriculum is a beast, but I love it. Currently in Germany 🇩🇪 teaching 5th grade at a DODEA School. #armywife. Have a great year!!
Good call on the desk. I think the kidney table and student desk will be plenty of room. I opted to take mine out quite a few years ago and haven't regretted it. I'd rather lose it than feel cluttered in the classroom. Looks fantastic!
I love the changes you made. I think the library is perfect by the window!! Your classroom is looking super functional. It has a great flow, and the pops of color look fantastic!
Yes!! You did what I did. Used the kidney as home base and a little desk for the front. I was listening to all changes and went, yes. You read my mind!
Love how you moved the library and kidney table. I would swap the cabinet next to the library and the desk next to the white board. That will open up the library and give you better visibility and rug space.
I got rid of mine during Covid because we had to space students desks and I had no room. Best decision! Best of luck to you as you begin your teaching journey again. Maybe Bridget will come surprise you at your new job.
I haven't had a teacher desk for about 5 years and I have a small desk by my SMARTBOARD as well. It works out great for me and gives students much more room. I try to make sure the space is dedicated to them, and my "stuff" is minimal. I do have a fridge and microwave, though. I like how your fridge is up higher and out of the way. Nice.
My school also has the come whenever you want policy and I LOVE it! I did christmas in June for our theme day, I went in on a Sunday night with my sister and we decorated the classroom. I'm going later today to finish setting up my room.
Have you thought about grabbing a queen size sheet for that big bulletin board? I always use sheets - one twin size covers my 2 small bulletin boards. (Cut the top fold off.) Just pull tight to get the wrinkles out. Horizontal wrinkles, pull from top or bottom, vertical wrinkles, pull from sides. #loveyourvideos
The alarm system!! When I was teaching and I’d work in my room on the weekends that was the SO freaking scary turning off the alarm. Actually, I think walking through the dark school all on my own was even more scary 😂 loved the Dwight cut in turning on the fire alarm… my all time favorite episode!
I was thinking of that small group table being your main hub since I've seen a 3rd grade and 2nd grade teacher both do that. It worked really well and I loved subbing for them. It just works in a smaller room or where there's more compactness. Glad you decided to go with that. I thought of the table at the front, so I feel good lol. It's so nice (but also my old mentor had it like that for ELA too so I thought of her). You and Billy both seem to be doing so well there! I'm so happy. He seems to enjoy being your helper to set this classroom up. Glad you have each other. Hope you get everything you need to done in time! It's nice to have smaller classes, enjoy! I am loving walking alongside you on this journey. We will change our minds a hundred times and it is nice that we can change (most things) based on our needs and our students needs. My desk is in our shared office (preschool classrooms), so it is nice to have that space away from where the kids are.

Your room is looking fabulous. I have cabinet organization envy! My cabinets would make you anxious, they are so disorganized. I think I'll start purchasing some of those sterilite containers and organize one at a time
I love the black and white with the rainbow colors! I just wanted to mention the double sided shelf may be in a spot where students can hide and get into mischief 😅 I would put it behind your chair? I was always moving my furniture around when I taught. Like you said, it’s never finished. Have a great school year!! Can’t wait to go on this journey with you.
Michelle I do the same thing! I reorganize many times before I get it just right! In fhe end I’m always happy I switched things around 😊 Loving the vlogs!
Yay it’s coming together! That double sided bookshelf is so big and big in front of the window and light for library is just my thought? The rest looks great! I’m setting up my classroom, so this helps!
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who changes the space after being in it and setting it once. I generally try multiple versions of set up. Also, I would be happy to get rid of my desk, but we are required to have certain furniture in the room. So the desk stays, so I use it. Looking to see where you plan to put your work computer.
I was hoping you were going to just use your kidney table! I got rid of my teacher's desk about 7 years ago. It definitely saved space! I love your room! At 7:39, keep your fridge on the bottom of the shelf with the toolbox on top. Put the kidney table catty-corner. Use your office chair at the kidney table, and then you can roll over to get stuff out of the fridge and toolbox. You will get tired getting up to get stuff from the toolbox that's on your homebase shelf. 4:54 I just rewatched the video and you said you would put it catty-corner.

I’m in STX too and it’s going around. Hopefully Billy just has a cold 🤞🏼 keep the updates coming! I’m going nuts here in quarantine! Only one more day🎉 then I can get back in and finish my classroom setup!
I was thinking the whole time: you don’t need the teacher desk! I work from my kidney table and it’s perfect. We move so much, the desk isn’t necessary truly! Love your videos!!!
Yes! This is what I did. I never used my teacher desk and it just used up valuable space in my classroom. I had a nice size kidney shape table that I used instead. Loved it.
I gave up my teacher's desk after year 2. This will be my 16th year. The teacher's desk takes up prime real estate in most classrooms. Plus I never had time to sit in mine eve after school I would find myself sitting at my small group table or at one of the student desks. Now, I do the same thing you have here. I have a student desk up front, neat my smart board, plus I have a cart for my computer, markers etc.
I like this arrangement much better - it looks great! A thought about your lights around the board...since your flat screen is going to live in front of the board, you could use a short extension cord at the plug for your lights so that the last little length of purple lights could actually complete the rectangle around the board. Not sure if I explained that correctly, haha, but it would please my ocd heart for the lights to actually go all the way around the board instead of having the last little bit hanging down towards the outlet. Since the tv will hide the excess extension cord, it would work great! And speaking of ocd, cord covers are super cheap and have made a huge difference for me in getting rid of the visual clutter that cords create. But if you don't mind it - you do you! It'll be a wonderful place for your kiddos to learn and for you to thrive. Blessings to you in this new chapter! 💗💗
Classroom setup is such an evolutionary process. I’m still trying to rack my brain with ideas for my friend’s classroom. I’m very much old school where I am used to a school computer connecting to the IFP (or smart screen). I think not having a teacher desk is risky, but given the space in your room (I don’t think the camera does it justice on how little room there is) I think it is the smart option.
That is the great thing about Texas that I loved. I used to go in evening and work until it cooled down then run from there. Here in VA, no access ever.
Looks like it’s coming together! Can I suggest that you swap the 2 shelves in the library area? The tall one you could rotate 90 degrees and put at the edge of where the black shelf currently is, then put the black shelf where the tall one is. I’m thinking of kinda “fung shui” plus you can see students behind the tall shelf and it blocks a lot of beautiful light from the window. Just an idea!
@@QB405that’s why I suggested rotating it 90 degrees. Kinda hard to explain, but it would stick out from the other wall, just like she currently has it.
Thanks for the Fetch suggestion in a previous video! Sadly, I discovered I already had it and just never used it, but I’m using it now! I just got hired as an EC teacher at a middle school (after taking 8 years off) and I’m always taught regular ed in elementary so it will be quite a change! We haven’t started back yet and I have no idea what kind of space I’ll have or what I’ll need for middle school so I’ll just keep scanning receipts in the meantime! Your room looks great! (Sorry for the novel. Lol)
We are not allowed in our building on weekends and we can't get back in after 6pm. I don't mind doing things at home, but I would not go in on the weekend. Teacher desk is personal preference. I had a table in one of my rooms and then I needed more drawers, which took up space, for stuff. When I had a desk I didn't, I didn't need the drawers. It's personal reference.
I had no idea some teachers weren't allowed in their school after hours! My principal has always told me that we are trustworthy professionals who have lives and can come in whenever it works for us and our families!! Thank you for the much needed motivation as I go into my classroom (on a Saturday) 😂
Hey Michelle, I am enjoying watching your vlogs, and learning a lot! A BIG Thank You! Good luck with the beginning of the school year. I am curious about the labels you have on your bins - book bins, sterilite containers etc. Thank you so much in advance.
Loving the room setup. While I don't have a primary classroom, I'm trying to glean whatever I can from your setup. Mine's a hot mess right now. Can I just say how jealous I am of all the storage cabinets and shelving you have? You're so very lucky to have all of that available to you! Lastly, if you stack your bins in that skinny closet, where will you put your coat?
I had a table and desk last year and this year I’m only having a desk since I don’t need a document camera. We have board that connect wirelessly to our laptop so I can use the table as a work space for students. I wish we could go in on the weekend. Id be there now just to get things done ahead.
I am entering my 9th year teaching and have never had a teacher desk. Like your current setup, I have a kidney table and then a small stand for my doc cam. Not having a teacher desk saves a LOT of space.
My mind is blown. You are allowed in the building anytime you want? Alone? They give you the alarm code? That would NEVER happen in my school! 😂 is your classroom smaller than previous rooms you’ve been in or does it just look that way on camera? Go Billy for helping you with the bulletin board. Those things are the bane of my existence! Can’t wait for the next video.
My school allows us in whenever we want too, as long as the summer cleaninghas been finished! We have our own codes, but the alarm is never set. Every teacher has a key and code.
@@meghankervin5716 That’s so crazy to me! I wish! In fact last year on our first day back (the kids were starting the next day) they kicked us all out of the building at 2:30 because the AP was going home and they didn’t want us in the building without an administrator!
Can you put your desks in groups? I use groups and it gives me so much more space in the room. Have you been trained in Whole Brain teaching and Kagan Structures? Great for learning, movement, repetition, learning, etc!! Your room is looking great!
I pretty much have my classroom setup dialed in. It helps that I have been in the same room for 5 years now. HOWEVER! I know exactly what you mean about having a change of plans. I had my hallway bulletin board all done, but while I was deciding on a caption, I came up with a whole new idea for it. My Science team teacher offered to Cricut the letters for me, but they were bigger than I expected. I must have spent anywhere from 1-2 hours trying to get that settled. 🥵🥵🥵
I always get rid of the kidney table and add a table next to my desk for small groups. I also have a small trapezoid table at the front of the room with my document reader and a container with pens. I think these classrooms are too small and not meant for 25 plus students. It feels too crowded when you have too many things. I just moved into a new classroom and got rid of pocket chart stands, tables, chairs, a desktop computer, etc.

So excited for these vids!!! So happy you’re happy Michelle! A long time follower and loved watching your journey ❤️❤️
I loved using my kidney table as my teacher “desk”. It’s looking great!
That desk with a red lamp on is great, looks cosy❤
That's not a lamp. It's a document camera
Then she'd lose half the storage, since the tall shelving unit has shelves on both sides.
@@QB405that’s why I suggested rotating it 90 degrees. Kinda hard to explain, but it would stick out from the other wall, just like she currently has it.
LOVE your color scheme- I want it!!!! Also love how you are so organized! I need to get rid of more things… I hate waiting for your next video 😂
So glad you’re back to teaching! I’m about to start my 16th year. 3rd year to be departmentalized ELA.
Oh it's looking so good!
Great job Michelle!
Can they mount your flat panel? That would give you a little more room too.
I got rid of my desk years ago.. loved it! ❤retired now
I love watching your videos
Loving your videos! Really inspiring me to be more consistent on here! 😊
I like your girl math with measuring 😂 That's how I am. If it's 2 arm lengths I can measure my entire classroom. Lol
How fun! Can't wait to set up my room.
You should do a big horse shoe shape for the kids' desks then you can walk in front of them and see all their faces w/o kids hiding in rows!
If you're not getting the teacher desk, then you'll need to get that file cabinet back. Locked storage is necessary.
Can you show us your slide setup for this year? I loved your other ones!
Love it 🥰

Where did you get your Friyay shirt. Your classroom is looking fabulous!!
