I just like that there is a Vita-like console again with a huge game library that also includes multi-platform titles. Some games are just predestined to be played on a device like this.
Joe Ryan as a vita owner...the only advantage vita has in terms of appearance is its smaller body. Lite just feels so good to hold compared to a vita. (I have the lcd and the phat one)

I own an original switch but went ahead and got the light form myself while giving my daughter the original. I primarily game with it on the go. Yes I know the original can do that but the fact it’s lighter and a little smaller were great. I absolutely love it, feels a lot more solid than the original and all the buttons feel a lot better to me. I’m very happy with the lite and my daughter is over the moon she has her own 👊🏼😊

A bit of a silly rant here but I've always said that handheld game consoles have the worst commercials when it comes to what you get compared to what they sell you. Surprisingly so Every ad for a major handheld shows the owner taking their device to an exclusive party full of models at the top of a Dubai skyscraper and either becoming the life of the party or starting a fuckin LAN party with 6 other friends that also brought their handheld. It's insane. Fuckin...every ad at some point has to show to some guy at the beach playing their handheld before some hot chick comes over and asks for a go at Zelda or whatever. They bond over Metroid Prime or some shit. It's comical. The truth is that 99% of handheld usage is done by someone taking a shit or laying in bed covered in snack crumbs. Very few actually use a handheld "on the go" outside of a plane or school. I recall the Vita branding itself as a device that would allow a young businessman to start a game of MLB The Show on his PS4...at 7am before work...and continue the same game on the bus when he left for work. Nobody in the history of ever has done that. Sure, you may have taken a handheld to work so you can play on break or whatever but no corporate junior executive has ever sat at the back of a bus...in a major city...and not only played a game but celebrated like a jackass while doing so 😅 You'd get jumped and robbed doing that bullshit. It's just amazing how handheld commercials lie more than alcohol ads and car ads! Like, you may actually get laid after drinking that shit if, say, a woman also drank a bunch of the same shit. Buy booze. You may get laid. That car/truck may get you laid or allow you to haul more lumber or whatever. Buy car/truck and haul more lumber. However, no, buying this handheld won't allow you entrance into The Roman Collusium at night to play a 10 person game of Mario Kart with your supermodel friends. Zero chance. None. Zero. 😅

@@DannyWilliamH While I agree that most of the ads show ridiculous scenes, handheld use changed quite a lot since last decade. Smartphones were the big upset for traditional handheld game devices. If most people are glued to a gaming device at a place with public wifi it's usually on a phone.
Thank you for the informative review. In my opinion, all of the cutbacks are OK apart from the HD Rumble - I know it was removed to save on battery life, but still, it has become an integral part of the Switch experience, especially in games that make smart use of it.
I feel the same. I did think that if they'd used a simple rumble, like the haptic feedback in smart phones, that would have been ok, definitely better than no rumble at all. It seems a shame to me.

The decrease in PPI won't be to bad as long as the Switch pro will be able to push all games to native 720p in handheld mode. Muddy games like Doom, Yoshi and Wolfenstein will look sharper even on a larger display then they do currently, as long as the Switch pro can increase the resolution of said games.
The Lite is a beautiful looking device. I’m new to Switch - I’ve just bought myself the newly updated regular version with improved battery life. The only reason I didn’t go for the Lite was I want to play multiplayer games with my other half on the tv. I’m sure anyone that doesn’t need that functionality will be very happy with the Lite!
Jean Taylor if you are just playing against people at home then no. But if you want to play against people online then yes. About £20 for a years subscription.
I recently traded in my Switch with around 10 games so I could get a new laptop. I enjoyed the Switch overall, thought it was a great handheld but as a home console I always found it a little bit sub par, I do my gaming on my PS4 Pro but I'm tempted by the Switch lite because it basically fully focuses on what I enjoyed about the console in the first place.....plus I really wanna play Link's Awakening.
I feel the same. I believe nintendo should stick to handhelds and let sony and the xboys have the full console market. Dont get me wrong i love the switch but it could be better if they focus on just the portable aspect. Add bluetooth for wireless headphones and themes like the 3ds and music etc. Thats what i really want. Saw what happend to the WiiU. If the Switch wasn't a hybrid they'd be in trouble. Im my honest opinion.
I often find the standard model on sale around $250. So for $50 more, you get an $80 dock, detachable controllers, rumble, the right joy-con sensor, the ability to play on tv and the ability to swap joy cons in case they drift. The lite is appealing, but I just don't see the value. You're also blocking access to, not a large, but a significant portion of the library. If they can produce a pro model with a similar form factor, they would be unstoppable.
I agree it's dumb. I'm from the UK and I've even seen the normal switch (launch model) bring sold for £180 first hand, £20 less than a new switch lite. Much more worth it imo.
Well to be fair this is most likely because the switch has now nearly three years of age. You better believe that the same treatment will be done with the switch lite when time passes. Maybe you will find it for 150. Who knows?
I have a long commute to work, so for me the switch lite makes more sense regardless of how low the OG switch can be bought for. I paid around £140($175) for my switch lite and zelda links awakening. At that price, its a steal.
@@abaque24 don't have stats but my local game store says they sell more joycons than Nintendo games+consoles , there's 3 switch in my family and between us we had to get a spare pair for each to use while the other set is in repairs....I guess if Nintendo releases stats on consoles sold vs joycons. Time will eventually tell.
For those who want to get a lite, good for you. Hope it is everything you want/need. For me I'm going to get the original, I like table top mode. And the ability to play with others even if they don't have a system. And I can just get a joy con with a dpad.
I love my Lite. Got the turquoise one, too, and it's beautiful! The smaller screen isn't an issue so far, and in case text does get too small, there's still the zoom function. 🤓
You know if the battery life on the original Switch is a problem, you can always buy a power bank for the Switch. I'm not sure which shops they are sold in (probably in Game, not sure) but you can look on eBay or Amazon.
Agreed. I was gonna get a switch Lite until I seen that battery life. 5hr looks so appealing vs The Lite's Price point. Thats the majority of a plane ride

If there is a Switch “Pro” down the line, I hope that a longer lasting better is on the list. Yes, I know the new Tegra X1 in the Switch Lite and new model switch automatically boost battery life because of efficiency, but if Nintendo boosts power, I hope they add a better battery. I’m willing to pay the price for it.

@@chicoti3 the only issue i have is the build quality. The build quality isn't that good at least the one that sold in my country. Like the body is not perfectly shaped (there is a gap), there is a squeaky part, and of course the joy con drift. For this all i did is buy a hardcase and make sure the joycon never get dirty (dust).

@@chicoti3 the thing about the drift is happened because dust and excessive usage (like playing tekken or something like that). almost 2 years, my switch never suffer any joycon drift.
Having an original Switch the Lite doesn't really appeal to me much. The main culprit is Nintendo's handling of sharing your library and saves between two systems, which is a lot more inconvenient than it needs to be, but than again I feel as though this system wasn't intended for people like my self but for people that are looking to make a nice gift or those looking to get into the Switch for a cheaper price. If I could give any advice to someone whose considering a Lite it would be to wait and save up another hundred and get the regular Switch, the amount of extras is well worth it. I know if I bought the Lite as my first system I'd always regret not getting the original Switch.
Bruh everything about Nintendo is more inconvenient than it needs to be. Nintendo is weird man. They make some of the best consoles and games but then go back 5 steps by using a phone app for voice chat and friendcodes.
I've always wanted a switch but never as much as I do with the lite. Being a proper dedicated handheld makes it more appealing to many people. I always loved handhelds and have owned most of them growing up. There's just something about a handheld that can't be replicated by anything else.
I really enjoyed that review. First one I have seen that seems to be genuinely reviewing the lite for what it is instead of what it isn't! Simply if you want all the extras of the OG Switch that's the one you buy if you want portable then the lite is fantastic!
I think I will wait for a new model with a dock feature. This one is still lacking some finetuning, and the few improvements aren't really worth the double dip in my opinion. And I just like to hook it up on the TV whenever I get the chance. I can play on the go during travels and later on a hotel's TV screen. That's what I liked about the Switch in the first place.
Yeah they might make a more powerful version like they did with the 3ds. I'll wait for that. Obviously, it won't be coming out soon because they don't want it to eat into their lite sales, but maybe in latd 2020 as a prediction.
The Switch Lite is a downgrade in every way to the 2nd Gen Switch besides the lighter weight. It's aimed at people who don't already own a Switch, but at the same time it's only like $50 cheaper which is definitely not worth getting rid of all the features in the full 2nd Gen Switch.
just bought the lite today with links awakening. owned a normal switch about a year ago and am happy with the light so far. nice buttons, clean look, screen feels a bit small on day 1 and hoping I wont end up missing the docking feature . otherwise happy
I think it’s fair to say this is Nintendo’s next step to becoming a solely handheld gaming company (at near console-level quality). They’ve struggled in the home console market since the days of the N64 (Wii was a rare exception) but they’ve always remained king in the handheld arena and the format fits their main line franchises perfectly.
The form factor and controls of the wii u controller I still believe are the very best. Having full size analogue and buttons is a joy to use. Great video

2:19 Except tabletop play is possible with switch controllers (sold separately and having to prop the console up of course but still, i can do it with the flip cover). 1) How could you play with a Pro controller without a kickstand? And if you buy a third party kickstand for $30, then you might as well buy a normal switch. 2) For only $100 (almost the price of ONE game), you get a real Switch. 3) Although it's portable, it has a LOT less battery life than the new switch. 4) Transferring CLOUD SAVES is horrendous and barely works. So don't expect to use this as a secondary switch without tons of hassle. 5) The Joycons are unchanged and WILL DRIFT, costing you in the long run MORE than a regular Nintendo switch Bottom line, this is an unfinished console, avoid at all cost.
Some games are fully compatible with the lite version. Others lack certain features and others aren't compatible at all. This is why, I consider lite a bad choice. Furthermore, the joycon drifting is a thing. You have to send the lite for service in contrast to the original switch which you can just change joycons.
Sold my original switch 2 years ago, recently bought a switch lite and I was amazed battery life has been that much better. Honestly really like the form factor, finally a replacement to my 3DS
I am surprised by the near-identical temperature readings of the original Switch model and those of its revision, particularly for undocked. I swear the revision model runs much cooler than its predecessor.

Well yes, but some of the defining Switch experiences and best selling titles, such as SSB and MK, are next to useless on this machine. Thus Richard’s comment that handheld only is the true form of the system is hardly accurate. That is not to say there isn’t a market for it, but the compromise not to fully support essential software makes this version of the hardware less essential.
Miggz it feels like an insane misstep. They had all of the opportunity to make this model more ergonomic being that all of the limitations are gone with no detaching controllers. The fact that no reviewer brought this up surprises me.
You mean putting the analog in a straight like just like the Vita? I mean that would definitely make it more comfortable to use and less strain on the fingers as well as the left joy stick.
Got a deal on one of these, and think I'll use it while I wait for a switch pro. Hopefully that allows better performance on the tv and I'll get the best of both worlds.
I think it's cool they threw out an economical version, but I believe a hardware refresh would've been more prudent. That means a newer, more efficient architecture with higher quality parts. For instance steel thumbsticks and navi.
I am surprised no one mentions that some games don't run great in handheld mode and I do not like the travel distance of the joy cons. I have a switch with over 100 games and play mostly portability but sometimes it is better docked or if you play with other people. I also just like the pro controller a lot more.

@@abaque24 don't have stats but my local game store says they sell more joycons than Nintendo games+consoles , there's 3 switch in my family and between us we had to get a spare pair for each to use while the other set is in repairs....I guess if Nintendo releases stats on consoles sold vs joycons. Time will eventually tell.

For those who want to get a lite, good for you. Hope it is everything you want/need. For me I'm going to get the original, I like table top mode. And the ability to play with others even if they don't have a system. And I can just get a joy con with a dpad.
I like tabletop mode as well, but I can always get a kickstand accessory to prop up the Lite.
I love my Lite. Got the turquoise one, too, and it's beautiful! The smaller screen isn't an issue so far, and in case text does get too small, there's still the zoom function. 🤓
did you get any drift? I wanna buy the yellow one so bad I'm just so worried I'll play it for a while and boom, sticks are broken.

You know if the battery life on the original Switch is a problem, you can always buy a power bank for the Switch. I'm not sure which shops they are sold in (probably in Game, not sure) but you can look on eBay or Amazon.
Agreed. I was gonna get a switch Lite until I seen that battery life. 5hr looks so appealing vs The Lite's Price point. Thats the majority of a plane ride

The Lite is good for those who want a successor to 3DS and don't care about the Vanilla Switch's functionality. For everyone else, the new "Improved Battery" Switch is a better option imo.
I very nearly bought a Lite this week. I'm so glad I didn't. I think the bigger screen and functionality are worth the extra money.
I wish each review remembered our bothered to include a fps and a street fighter test for the new buttons and mentioned whether there was a change to the capacity of micro SD card it supports.

If there is a Switch “Pro” down the line, I hope that a longer lasting better is on the list. Yes, I know the new Tegra X1 in the Switch Lite and new model switch automatically boost battery life because of efficiency, but if Nintendo boosts power, I hope they add a better battery. I’m willing to pay the price for it.
Not likely, they have no room left in the Switch for a bigger battery. Battery tech would need to improve first.

The build quality isn't that good at least the one that sold in my country.
Like the body is not perfectly shaped (there is a gap), there is a squeaky part, and of course the joy con drift.
For this all i did is buy a hardcase and make sure the joycon never get dirty (dust).
@@nekopaw8730 I see a lot of people talking about this joycon drift. Is this something that inevitably happens or does one need to treat their analog stick particularly badly for this phenomenon to occur? And did this happen to yours?

Having an original Switch the Lite doesn't really appeal to me much. The main culprit is Nintendo's handling of sharing your library and saves between two systems, which is a lot more inconvenient than it needs to be, but than again I feel as though this system wasn't intended for people like my self but for people that are looking to make a nice gift or those looking to get into the Switch for a cheaper price. If I could give any advice to someone whose considering a Lite it would be to wait and save up another hundred and get the regular Switch, the amount of extras is well worth it. I know if I bought the Lite as my first system I'd always regret not getting the original Switch.

Bruh everything about Nintendo is more inconvenient than it needs to be. Nintendo is weird man. They make some of the best consoles and games but then go back 5 steps by using a phone app for voice chat and friendcodes.

I've always wanted a switch but never as much as I do with the lite. Being a proper dedicated handheld makes it more appealing to many people. I always loved handhelds and have owned most of them growing up. There's just something about a handheld that can't be replicated by anything else.

Simply if you want all the extras of the OG Switch that's the one you buy if you want portable then the lite is fantastic!
I think I will wait for a new model with a dock feature. This one is still lacking some finetuning, and the few improvements aren't really worth the double dip in my opinion. And I just like to hook it up on the TV whenever I get the chance. I can play on the go during travels and later on a hotel's TV screen. That's what I liked about the Switch in the first place.
Yeah they might make a more powerful version like they did with the 3ds. I'll wait for that. Obviously, it won't be coming out soon because they don't want it to eat into their lite sales, but maybe in latd 2020 as a prediction.
The Switch Lite is a downgrade in every way to the 2nd Gen Switch besides the lighter weight. It's aimed at people who don't already own a Switch, but at the same time it's only like $50 cheaper which is definitely not worth getting rid of all the features in the full 2nd Gen Switch.

just bought the lite today with links awakening. owned a normal switch about a year ago and am happy with the light so far. nice buttons, clean look, screen feels a bit small on day 1 and hoping I wont end up missing the docking feature . otherwise happy
I think it’s fair to say this is Nintendo’s next step to becoming a solely handheld gaming company (at near console-level quality). They’ve struggled in the home console market since the days of the N64 (Wii was a rare exception) but they’ve always remained king in the handheld arena and the format fits their main line franchises perfectly.

The form factor and controls of the wii u controller I still believe are the very best. Having full size analogue and buttons is a joy to use. Great video

1) How could you play with a Pro controller without a kickstand? And if you buy a third party kickstand for $30, then you might as well buy a normal switch.
2) For only $100 (almost the price of ONE game), you get a real Switch.
3) Although it's portable, it has a LOT less battery life than the new switch.
4) Transferring CLOUD SAVES is horrendous and barely works. So don't expect to use this as a secondary switch without tons of hassle.
5) The Joycons are unchanged and WILL DRIFT, costing you in the long run MORE than a regular Nintendo switch
Bottom line, this is an unfinished console, avoid at all cost.

Some games are fully compatible with the lite version. Others lack certain features and others aren't compatible at all. This is why, I consider lite a bad choice.
Furthermore, the joycon drifting is a thing. You have to send the lite for service in contrast to the original switch which you can just change joycons.
Sold my original switch 2 years ago, recently bought a switch lite and I was amazed battery life has been that much better. Honestly really like the form factor, finally a replacement to my 3DS

Switch Lite does not support tv out feature, you might want to get the standard version.
Yeah, if you want a handheld that can connect to the TV you better get the standard switch, the Switch lite completely lacks the capability of connecting to a TV. It's completely handheld.
Having the capability to connect to a tv is still a feature I often use and for multiplayer games it is essential.
Meh, this system isn't for people that want that functionality though so it succeeds.
Well yes, but some of the defining Switch experiences and best selling titles, such as SSB and MK, are next to useless on this machine. Thus Richard’s comment that handheld only is the true form of the system is hardly accurate.
That is not to say there isn’t a market for it, but the compromise not to fully support essential software makes this version of the hardware less essential.
I've been loving my Switch lite. I think it will go down as one of the best handhelds that Nintendo has ever made.
I picked one up and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm lucky in that the missing features are largely features I wouldn't take advantage of anyway.
My biggest gripe with the lite is them not making the sticks straight across. That would have solved a great deal of the ergonomic issues.

Miggz it feels like an insane misstep. They had all of the opportunity to make this model more ergonomic being that all of the limitations are gone with no detaching controllers. The fact that no reviewer brought this up surprises me.
It's probably because that's the PlayStation controller layout and Nintendo feels like they have to differentiate themselves.
You mean putting the analog in a straight like just like the Vita? I mean that would definitely make it more comfortable to use and less strain on the fingers as well as the left joy stick.

I think it's cool they threw out an economical version, but I believe a hardware refresh would've been more prudent.
That means a newer, more efficient architecture with higher quality parts. For instance steel thumbsticks and navi.

I am surprised no one mentions that some games don't run great in handheld mode and I do not like the travel distance of the joy cons. I have a switch with over 100 games and play mostly portability but sometimes it is better docked or if you play with other people. I also just like the pro controller a lot more.
The only thing I like about this version of Switch, is the colour.
