US tried the swapping system and gave up quickly. Nio has been working on it for over a decade, despite the company is losing money. Great job!
It always the obvious points that make the difference. You completed 7 swaps at say 5 minutes per swap so 35 minutes of down time on your journey, yes plus time getting on and off the freeway. Now a nonswappable EV, 7 charges at say 40 minutes per charge 280 minutes. Now add the time if you had to wait in line for a charging station. It’s incredible I don’t understand why those people waiting the long time to charge their car when they see you in and out in 5 minutes do not change to a NIO.
Nios are pretty expensive and charging speeds are getting much faster these days.
@@Iropod not forgetting that NIO you can battery swap or charge the car which is a perfectly combination
@@IropodStill you have to wait. For these trips you probabely want a battery with 80+SOC an charging gets slower above 80%.
@@ohasli38and battery degradation for others not for NIO users.
There's no need to getting on and off the freeway, cos those battery swapping stations are inside the freeway rest stops.
I’m amazed by how much I enjoy watching the NIO brand in action, especially their battery swap experience. I’ve supported the company since its IPO, and for good reasons. I believe NIO will debut in North America in late 2025 or early 2026, and I’m eagerly anticipating the chance to experience its ecosystem. This excellent episode offered a unique cultural perspective on road travel, which was greatly appreciated.
Thanks, and Happy New Year to all
NIO is impressive. Thanks for sharing this video.
Excellent video! Battery swap is a winner! Happy Chinese New Year wishes from Lebanon!
Well done! Thank you for completing the journey and sharing the experience. Blue sky coming!
Awesome coverage!! NIO is the future!!!
This is why I’m totally invested in NIO, battery swapping technology!
Blue sky coming 💙.
Battery swap is the future 👌
Well done for your effort
Great to see this kind of video
Showing Nio battery swap station can work so efficient in china
Lets hope Nio have plan come to UK soon
Just like some new BYD cars are for sale in UK now : )
Nice to see NIO in action, thanks 😊
Very good video about the advantage of NIO. Happy Chinese New Year!
Excellent work! Quite the journey..
Happy New Year to you and every loved one!
Very interesting, specially the self driving system performance. Great review, thank you.
Really enjoy this vlog type of video. Traffic seems horrendous.
That would probably be 10 hours in a fast train. Happy Year of the Dragon. Looking forward to more videos, especially the sodium ion battery-powered cars.
Really impressive swap experience, great video!
As always, Sean, great endeavor. You did prove that EVs' future is bright, and all is not lost with battery swapping stations. In fact, more EV automakers should sign up with NIO for the provision of its battery swapping service. Have a happy and prosperous new year!
Thank you for taking us along with you for the amazing experience.
Thank you for your commitment to finish the journey and showcase how intelligent and advanced NOP+ is and 7 swaps is equivalent to 1 - 30 min charge with no waiting. Wish you a happy holiday!
Thats nice and all but you pay extra and 170 up to 300€ per month to be able to use swapping. The cost of the stations is immense and pushed to consumers, this works in Govt funded China but not in EU/US.
Mate, corporations in the US receive massive tax breaks and are funded with tax Dollars up to the brim! @@flujori
@@flujori The government does not provide funding, and Chinese people cannot afford the cost, as evidenced by the sales of nio
新年快乐. Great video, as a Nio ES6 owner this was extremely interesting to watch. Also an experienced driver having lived and driven in U.K. (home country) South Africa, Poland, India, Germany and now China, while in Germany and Poland undertook many 1000+km trips in both good and bad weather (like you I have never seen traffic like you encountered on this trip). Always did my trips in a petrol or diesel powered car, never an EV, 1000km in 8-10 hrs even on clear German autobahns reaching speeds of 255km/hr is not an easy drive, I think I would have given up and gone home on the first day. Your faith in NOP+ was interesting, I have only used around Beijing and it works very well (especially since Banyan 2.4 upgrade) however, I am not sure I would have the faith to let it drive me in conditions I could not see clearly in, I clearly need to try harder with this system.
As the service gets more mainstream, it will become more affordable. Keep in mind that the business model is different in Europe and China. With the upcoming sub-brand, partners and thousands of new swap stations, it's gonna get even more interesting.
Nio swappable battery infrastructure technology is the future of EV.
Nio actually takes the responsibility of replacing old battery which means more operation cost. However, in China their price is not much more higher than Tesla. That's the reason of their bad financial results. However, they can achieve profit in developed countries where customers value more on service.
Amazing video!!! You nailed the swapping concept and explained how amazing it is!!
Good insight. Just to say it’s not any different here in the UK traffic works always seems to appear when major holidays come on… it’s traditional!! Interesting to understand if the their is a difference in cost doing a battery swap then charging at charge point. When is NiO coming to the UK
firstly, “Don’t do this” 🤣 Imagine if you need to charge instead of swapping battery 😂😅 Gong Si Fa Cai ❤
Well done!!!
Would have been great to interview people charging to get their thoughts on BATTERY swap.
Great road trip journey, very interesting excercise! It seems you took the right EV to undertake this long journey. Thanks for filming this. Happy CNY 2024!
Great video 👍
Thanks for the video. GO NIO and Battery swapping is the ONLY WAY.
👍👍great video. Thanks
Hong Kong to Harbin might be a bigger challenge.
Fantastic video, thanks for the effort! Conclusion: take the high-speed train next time!
First you have to be able to get a ticket😅 not an easy task during the Chinese New Year holiday
@@mcqueen_nahco3177 Good point. The logistics of this period is absolutely insane.
NOP is so far ahead of Tesla "Junk" FSD. I wish more people knew this.
Nice!!
Great video! This video should get more views. Cheers!
great information for us
Great video
Happy Chinese new year 🎉
I have to say your English is excellent sir, you must of spent time in the UK, it makes a nice change from those of your countrymen who have been tort by American English which is laughable. It is also nice to know that Chinese people are suffering the same traffic conditions as we have here in the UK, and the same officials in charge of operations lol. But great video and I love the Nio battery swap system.
With Geely also joining the battery swapping revolution, i think this will be the future. Dont rule out battery swapping... to me this take the weaknesses part of EV to make make it completely good.
for me only NIO
good topic! I am curious too
As an Englishman, I love how you say "I'm knackered", you could be English.
thanks for this great video! are also doing a Chinese version of this at the same time?
Nio is very good, but the consumption is extremely high even though only low speeds were driven.
GO NIO!!! :)
I want this to be a standard accross all Chinese EV brands, why can't I swap the battery on the $5000 Wuling Mini EV, why won't BYD EVs be compatible? Why doesn't the Chinese Government make it standard?
Then sell your junk BYD EV and buy NIO EV
@@chauduong835 where's the way way cheaper NIO EV?
Few giant automakers is also joining Geely and Changan automobil has sign partnership with nio to jointly support battery swapping... soon more and more china car company will join.
@@kckfen That would be fantastic news and really what I am looking forward to. I want sub-$10K EVs where you don't pay upfront for the battery, instead you pay a price per month for battery usage based on your needed range, to come with battery swap as a service and yet be 100% future proof for when longer range cheaper batteries become possible..
cheers mate good stuff. if I were to do something like this I would take Lixiang L9 over any electric car
What a hard looooong trip
Can you discuss how much the cold weather affected your range targets in this trip?

Battery swap is the only way to go until they come up with a charging time of 5 minutes or less at a charging station. But swapping would still be superior because you get a battery that has its full capacity each time you swap. You don't have to worry about battery longevity or buying a new battery with swapping vs charging.
With the battery swapping station, driver doesn't need to get off the car to do all the charging work, It's really nice in rainy/snowy/cold days.
Didn’t know Chengdu was on the East coast ??
Were there no waiting times at NIO battery swap stations during CNY?
Not on the east coast. Note that Sean's trip is earlier to the CNY, NIO battery swap stations on the highway have way less waiting time than in the cities.
... wow i assume that you got the same planners for your construction sites as we got in germany... last year to christmas was the FIRST TIME in my 45 year LIFE, that i didnt encountered ANY construction sites that would disrupt the flow of traffic, i am still fascinated and it will propably never happen again...
can you find out if Xiaomi is planning to bring the SU7 to Australia? i really want one
Really interesting vid. I'm not even an EV owner! Confused why you have to reverse into the battery swap station rather than drive stright in like a car wash.
Simple answer is: It takes less space. Note that most stations in the cities are near the office buildings, current pre-existing buildings do not leave too much space for a battery swap station.
Very interesting. How much did you per for each battery swap?
iirc its an optional subscription. start at 170 usd per month
1) it is free during the Chinese new year, 2) each owner has 4 free swap each month; 3) if you used all your 4 free swaps, each time you pay about $15 each swap
What's concerning about Autonomous Diving Systems, like NOP, is that while the camera's and sensors provide much better vision, how does the system/vehicle account for ice on the roads, slush, etc. that might result in the vehicle to lose control and cause an accident driving at those higher speeds?
My 30 yo car has a temperature sensor and ice warning.
@@DBGE001 My car has traction control. What my car doesn't have is an advantaged set of eyes that might not slow down despite the totaled vehicle and screaming cries in front of it. I'm sure developers will program all this in, as to why cars are slowing down when the conditions are freezing rain.
were the swap stations manned or unmanned?
Mostly unmanned now days
Battery swapping technology needs to be standardized so that it could be used by more manufacturers.
I wish to buy this car if they are coming to US in 2025 or 26
I still don’t understand why these battery swap stations cannot adopt a drive-thru configuration?
maybe it is to reduce form factor in cities where space is limited
Some of NIO's battery swap stations have drive-thru configuration. I want to see multiple battery swap units at locations that have large amount of battery swap requests
Commercial real estate is expensive, therefore to reduce costs you reduce the footprint. If you do have extra space it's better to install additional chargers then a drive-thru since NIO's charging service is actually profitable.
Happy New Year, me I would stay at home with cat.😸
but does the cat cook up a Chinese new year Feast 🤔
Is there a fee to swap batteries and can you reserve one through the car settings?
It’s free during Chinese new year
What is the regular price outside of the holidays?@@yandongpeng4824
fortunately e-mobility is not the reason for traffic jams
So from the moment you press start to let your car drive into the PSS and perform the swap, you are locked in your car for 5 minutes and not 3 like Chinese influencers promote ?
The duration depends on which generation of PSS you use, 3-5 minutes is the normal swap time. Banyan 2.4.0 keeps some power on the car during the swap, previous versions shut down car electric completely. Even with power off it is still possible to manually open the doors so not locked in.
@@stevehale4712i have not seen an unedited video where the swap is less than 4minutes30seconds. Can you find one? And leaving the car had nothing to do with safety but with comfort, you can leave the car when DC fast charging, you have to sit in the car during the swap.
@@flujori I am in 2 chat groups in China and I see messages such as this on a regular basis
“Yesterday i got a swap in 3,56min. including parking. The fastest ever what i achieved.”
Parking was taking quite a bit of the time, the Banyan 2.4 software upgrade has significantly sped up the parking process and under 4 minutes is the norm for Gen 3 PSS. Staying in the car for 4/5 minutes is not a hardship
@@steve251157 thats cool and all but just like in racing and sports, it only matters if its recorded. I'l believe it when i see it.
@@flujori fair enough, your call. Personally I believe this guys in my chat groups (about 100). The aim of the group is to help each other with Nio issues (how to…. ; I have a problem with ….. ; ….. works better now that Nio did ……etc.) Nio have a couple of guys in one of the groups who take away user issues to get resolved. Nio is very customer/user focused, listen and take action.
biggest drawback
battery pack price, each individual battery lifespan, charging time and charging station queue time
imagine queue 30 minutes just to get into charging station and another 30 minutes charging time
just consider Hybrid
😊
But how much does it cost to swap the battery? Is it the same price as charging the battery or is it much more expensive?
Pretty much same price as nearby charging station .
currenly nio owners get 4 swap for free per month. ~15 usd per swap after that. or you join subscription for ~170 usd per month.
From my warm living room that looked like a gruelling journey.
A couple of thoughts one the Nio battery swap system.
1) Surely it would have been a better design to have an arrangement of driving the vehicle on forwards from one side and out the other side. That way would be easier for the driver and if any sort of que formed it would be easier to manage.
2) The battery swap system will only remain preferable to charging as long as demand for swap is lower than demand for charging.
Thoughts anyone?
It's surprising to see that the slowest the average speed the highest the average energy consumption. Maybe it is because of a lot off start and stop in traffic, so the braking energy recovery is not that efficient
Disappointing range of just under 25kwh per 100km travelled. So a 75kwh battery would only do roughly 300km or under 200 miles. That’s less than I thought.
need to know that ES8 is a 6-seat big car.
and that the low temperature affects travel range dramatically
India is next
