  • Dodge is upping the high performance ante this year with the 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat, and the 2021 Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. We were fortunate enough to get invited to North Carolina where we got to take both of these powerhouses on a leisurely cruise through the countryside, as well as put them through their paces on the track.

Being a Dodge guy and owning a Mercedes GLC63, the Charger will take 3rd place among them. AWD of the M5 and E class is just to hard to over come. Put some tires on the Charger and an entirely different story. But if you put 1 thing on 1 and not the other....

I live in northern New England and have had RWD cars since 1987. If you know how to drive in snow and bad weather, then AWD just wastes gas. Granted it can help performance but it isn't totally necessary. Chargers are available on lesser models with AWD .

Greg, I'm truly envious of you and the Motorweek staff who get to enjoy these test-drives! As much as I would also enjoy the same experience, it has been my experience that most adults have no business attempting to drive a car with this much HP. Of course, I'm an excellent driver! 😉

    • @Bartonovich52

There gets to be a point of diminishing returns.
My family sedan has over 300 HP and the traction control constantly works any time you floor it doing the speed limit.
My friend has a Mustang GT PP2 with 460 HP and you need the traction control to limit it at any speed.. speed limit or not.
You need a warm day, prepped track, sticky tires, and launch control if you’re ever going to put more than half of that power down to the ground.
And honestly... if you’re buying a car just for the track and to just cruise around.. why would you ever buy a four door sedan or SUV?
No.. this is mostly for bragging rights. They are halo products for Dodge and will help sell more V6 Chargers and plain-Jane Durangos by association or aspiration.

No market for domestic cars anymore.
The Charger, 300, and Challenger fit a niche market of domestic performance cars on a design and tooling that has already amortized itself. It’s cheap to put a big engine and better suspension on it and sell it as an aspirational vehicle that will convince more people to buy the volume selling bottom rent V6 versions.
Chevy took the cheap way out and rebadged a Holden to dismal sales. Ford let its aged Taurus die... choosing to focus on its smaller Mustang.
Chrysler will kill it once it can no longer meet safety or environmental standards or when they get in financial trouble again by concentrating on fast gas guzzling cars that most people can’t afford and won’t do very well in the deepening recession.
