Yes John Davis has seen it all. I remember watching him as a kid in the 1990s when the new mustang came out, and the camaros and trans am and the grand prixs were considered the bad boys on the street. Times have changed. They will change again when EVs take over.

Unlike most automotive journalists who are performance oriented to a fault, John has always framed his reviews to Middle America, even when describing monsters like this one. He might not give you his tester's lap times, you can be sure you'll get pricing and fuel economy details.

I remember as a kid when John Davis reviewed the 1997 Grand prix GTP with it's supercharged engine making 240hp and 280 torques. I thought that car was amazing at the time. Here we are 24 years later with a Charger that makes nearly 800hp and 700 torques.
Unlike 24 years ago, this car is the end of an era. These high hp v8s in our cars and trucks right now won't be around much longer. EVs will take over, and one day it will be a distant memory when high HP v8s roamed the streets.
EVs will never be able to replace the sound and excitement that a gasoline engine with a supercharger can produce.

I love how they always complain about tracking these cars. I still run a 2010 plum crazy challenger srt8 with a six speed. Edelbrock supercharged, hotckis springs and sway bars, with from and rear tower braces and chassis x brace, on 275 cup tires. No weight reduction, consistent 1.21 lap times. That’s pretty good considering a ZR1 professionally driven does that track in 1.22.

Well one was built for the strip, and the other was built to rip up the road. One is a 4 door with full luxury/sport interior, the other has a stripped interior. That means a nearly 500 lb weight difference. And the difference isn’t that much, depending on the driver, they are pretty much equal. I have seen 1/4 Mike times for the Charger lower than what AW got, being low to mid 11’s. Auto Week isn’t known to show the full potential of any car’s performance, they always have slower times than other publications.

As an owner of a 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat 6-speed manual, I absolutely love the car. I don't care that it's "too heavy". When you are behind the wheel driving it, all you feel is torque and too much power for the street and a worry you will spin the tires at any time with little to no effort. Just something about knowing what the car can do without doing it often on the streets is just so satisfying to know. I usually just enjoy the car on cruises. It's my weekend car, but unfortunately has been garage kept for about a year now because other personal issues in life happened. But I start it up ever so often and glorious to listen to cold starts😀😎

Also you need to use the paddle shifters so you can play with the higher RPMs. With the correct mods, had suspension, tower braces front rear, and proper tires, it becomes more interesting. That, or you try a Scat Pack.

The marketing team first decided on the “Brown Eye” because this car would leave some serious skid marks. But they soon learned about the scatalogical implications. Next they tried the “Pink Eye” because this car would really put up a stink. But they soon realized the insensitivity to the medical condition. Then they settled on “Red Eye” but unfortunately haven’t yet encountered the meme Goatse.
