This episode doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Just because it isn't technology driven seems to push people away, this is more like the first episode.. Where the technology is secondary and the politics is the main subject being satired.. This is a great episode!
Yet it can be called easily tech driven if one remembers the likes of Max Headroom. Than you have the meshing of fiction and fact with the likes Sasha Baron Cohen, Especially with his most recent series, "Who is America?". An actor playing a character interacting with politicians and celebrities. This takes it to the next step.

Before Trump was elected this episode seemed stupid. Now it's real life.
This was one of the last Black Mirror episodes i saw due to not being well "ranked" on some BM ranking of episodes lists and man i absolutely love it enough to be in my top 5, i mean if i should explain to any people the current state of the world right now i'll just show them this episode, that's scary. 4/5 out of 5 stars.

I always found it really weird when people say they hate this episode because a cartoon candidate isn't realistic... hmm excuse me? In Brasil and Portugal (where I am from) and many other countries there have been joke candidates for years. They just never get very far because they either aren't very smart or are very obviously running as a joke, but I've always felt that if one of them were every angry enough to say the right things they would likely get elected as a statement.

Britain also has had many odd characters run for office, even some with elaborate costumes. That Boris guy that did win is pretty similar to Waldo also.

Having watched this back in 2013, I think most of the hatred is either retroactive or from people who watched it after what is depicted had already become an integral part of politics worldwide rather than being occasional.
Heads up for the same people saying the same thing about 'Men Against Fire'.
This originally aired 2013. I feel it predicted, in many ways, Donald Trump.
Not just him, populists are taking over in most countries.
British Channel 4 made seasons 1 and 2, netflix bought it in 2016. The show was mainly about Britain.

It was an eye opener for an inside look at modern politics. Recall that this was aired in February of 2013. However, many folks believe that this parallels our own politcal system, especially the presidential election in 2016 and may be why so many take exception to this episode. This episode was designed to make us think, however, and take it as a warning as to how we inform ourselves for our elections and politicians!

Yeah I really hope they go back to it, because I personally thought seasons 3 and 4 were more compelling overall and contain most of the series' best episodes (Shut Up and Dance, USS Callister, Hang the DJ just to name a few).

Donaldo Trump
People often applaud this episode for how accurately it predicted things like weaponized mass consumerism, the protest vote, the "LOL nothing matters" nihilistic edgelord politics, servility of the masses, fake "anti-establishment"ism & how the status quo exploits genuine discontent, etc. etc., basically our immediate political future. But I would say that's wrong.....the show wasn't actually bold enough to give Waldo the win, he just helped the Tory guy win. In this world, Waldo won.
Waldo moment isn't the best *Black Mirror* has to offer, but it definitely has important things to say.
When voting for politicians, people have moved from "Represent Us" to "Entertain Us".
Although this seems to be more prevalent in the US than the UK.
They never represent us. May as well be entertaining while not representing us. If Hillary had won, I'd only get constant cringe and nausea.

Season 3 is like leagues above the first two seasons and they're all great in their own ways.

Yeah, the hate comes after 2016. During 2012/2013 this was just an above average episode.

I saw the political connection in this show right away, but for me, the most intriguing part was the way "the man behind the mask" was portrayed. I think it was the underlying message in this episode - how much crap are "we" willing to spew because "we" feel safe behind the fake picture profile; how far are "we" will to go with the triggers, the trolling, the bias, the hate, etc....
Thanks for doing this episode. Like you said, it wasn't the best, but it wasn't as bad as some people made it out to be. 😊❤️
I watched this episode, for the first time, right after the 2016 election. It was creepy how many similarities there were between that election and this episode. Amazing that it came out years earlier and there I was watching it and it felt like it had already come true to some extent.
I am not one of the haters of this episode. I think it is a great episode with an important message. unfortunately the message wasn't heeded and we got 2016.
I agree with some comments, I too believe this episode was ahead of its time. And now, especially in the past 3 4 years, we have had such a polarized political opinion that something like Waldo who curses and spews out profanities right to politicians faces Will be A huge hit with the people. I would have probably never tried to go deep with what this episode's writers might be trying to convey and just watch it for fun, but black mirror has established itself as a social commentary from episode 1. So I can't help but think deep into it. Glad I'm not a part of the political system in real life. Ignorance is bliss
You guys ever going to finish this show? You have to at least watch Season 3 ep 4 "San Junipero". It's a perfect story.
Kinda sucks that they stopped, 9 of my top 10 favorite episodes are in seasons 3 and 4, and yes San Junipero is definitely a must watch episode!

(though it's blaming the messenger, really... it's _the current real world's_ fault that _The Waldo Moment_ i utterly depressing, not the episode's; it quite probably was much more tolerable back in 2013 when it aired...)

Yeah I still think this is the worst Black Mirror episode, but watching it again I don't think its as bad as I thought when I first watched it. It just stands out as the worst when compared to other episodes in the series but overall its ok. Not every episode in a series can be a masterpiece.

I see a lot of people arguing that this episode didn't deserve the hate that it got...but I don't see the hate. Where did it get hate? I remember watching it when it first aired. I never heard anything about this one getting any more hate than any other. I guess it was only in the US?

Great, now you can get to season 3 and 4 which is when the series became Netflix exclusive and upped its quality of content, imo. It was more streamlined though in terms of presenting why such and such is bad or good. But it did it in a good way though.

I hated this episode but i would never say to skip it. All episodes of Black Mirror are worth watching at least once, but this imo is the weakest episode.
while its not my fav episode I do not hate any episodes, all are good to me..... but hey don't skip any episodes...while they are stand alone episodes (without any spoilers) you will see some charades again and other related "things" by the time you get to the last season the last episode...enjoy...
As it turns out Mr.Brooker had to rush writing this episode,due to deadlines,and also how time consuming the rewrites for "White Bear" were,according to the "Inside Black Mirror" book. I'd love to see what it could have been had it been given proper time for the ideas and episode to be fully thought out.

Just replace the name Waldo with Trump... This show is is scarily prescient.
This is one of the better ones imo because it's aged better than the other ones. I watched this a few years after it aired and the things that happened after it are uncanny.. The talk show hosts influencing the masses and the shades of Trump-Hilary election period in particular. Sure, the ending is a bit far-fetched but it felt appropriate for the message they were going for. Because most of the time I take BM as more of a commentary/satire than it is as is.
I was in the camp of skip this episode. But after watching this I do have a new appreciation for it. Thanks, guys.

I felt the same about White Bear in the way that I didn’t like it/get into it. A few things must’ve gone over my head 😂😂
I think the episode showed more of the options of people running for office were horrible and Waldo was not the usual status quo politician. The people were so fed up, they were ready to give anyone or anything different a try.

I like Black Mirror because is each episode is stand alone but also each one takes place in the same universe, same world and some do connect back to eachother in some ways.
I've whole heartedly had Steve's take on this episode since seeing it back in 2014. It's not the best,not the worst,just good. Over time my love for it has grown.
People tend to go for either "it's the best ever" or "worst thing I've seen" when rating entertainment these days,forgetting or not caring that there is a bunch of rating room in between those extremes,and it's ok for some form of entertainment to fall there.
Lastly just like Rod Serling with the Twilight Zone and it's various themes,and ways to depict said themes. Black Mirror can fit into whatever mold Charlie Brooker & Anna Bele Jones choose for it,there is no "Well this isn't Black Mirror because etc" it's best when creators aren't limited,each new idea they fuse with the show expands it's range,and I'm so here for it.
I like that there are diffenent levels of technology in the show. Like if everything would be super unrealistic it wouldn't hit home as much. So I like these odd ones where the level of technology is closer to what is currently possible already and therefore the more science fictiony things impress more because it's not like "seen that on every episode before..."
