      True, but I feel like Monroe's personal attack was already too much for Jamie's ego to handle and regardless of the Gwan situation, Jamie would've snapped. Gwan not telling Jamie she'd call him back only added more fuel to the fire

    It’s amazing how that’s not very far from reality, here in Brasil the most voted politician is a famous clown, the population used the excuse of: since politics are a circus lets vote on the clown. His catch phrase was “it doesn’t get worse that it already is! Vote for me”. Not even gonna get started about our current president... very realistic episode.

    "The ones who keep saying they're dissatisfied with the way things are and want to make a change but end up not changing anything" that's funny because you described literally every major leader of modern countries from the past 20 years.

    • @anniehuang6321
      @anniehuang6321 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      The thing is that change can't happen immediately. By the time it does happen, people will eventually forget about it. Not to mention that some governments will also have to fix the mistakes that their predecessors made in order to create their ideal version of a society so it'll take time before it can happen.
      Obviously it's not always like that but these are some factors that a lot of people overlook.

      Yeah a lot of misinformed people think change should happen instantly, not only that but it should happen EXACTLY as they want it to happen

    • @totalwartimelapses6359
      @totalwartimelapses6359 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's bs things DO change, just not as fast you think they can, and are you implying that leaders did more change before the past 20 years? You think countries 200 years ago went through radical changes with every new leader?

    • @joshuarubenstein2298
      @joshuarubenstein2298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@anniehuang6321 i think it also has to do with the fact that many politician's idea of change is undoing what the previous politician did, especially if they are in an opposing party. So in the end, we're stuck in a cycle where any change or the start of change that comes about in one presidency is dismantled in the next usually due to pettiness between political parties.

    I suspect that it took so long for a synopsis on Waldo Moment because it was generally regarded as one of the worst episodes of Black Mirror, and perhaps some people like to pretend that it doesn't exist, so to speak, but as you can see from the comments, it's got its fans and champions. Personally, I think it's one of the best episodes, that it takes on notable relevance in the modern era, and people who don't like it have focused so much on the intentional obnoxiousness of Waldo that they completely missed the message (which is well stated in this video so I won't repeat it).

    • @angusmarch1066
      @angusmarch1066 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I think The Waldo Moment was ahead of its time. Even back in 2013 the internet was just seen as a distraction and memes were just funny little jokes and clips from movies. It was nowhere near as prevalent and the episode probably wouldnt have resonated with alot of people. Now in the post Trump era where the internet is literally one of the primary political weapons in the game and nihilistic meme culture can be used to grow an extremist movement in a week, where politicians and the system itself are both poorly understood but also the subject of ridicule everyday, Waldo makes so much more sense.

      @@angusmarch1066 This video reminds me of a emplemon video about how Trump won the 2016 election. The video basically boils down to that the power of memes helped Trump won the election. It's no wonder the US political landscape changed after that.

    I really like how they treated Monroe in the episode. It could’ve been so easy to make him your stereotypical evil politician from a cartoon but they actually added nuance and made it so you actually understood his argument. The scene of him arguing back against Waldo and the scene in the car is really good at humanizing him and adding extra nuance and perspective to the moral, them hitting a pothole would’ve undercut it imo making this major point a punchline.

    It's not so much that entertainment "started to" bleed into politics. Obviously that's going to have some serious implications down the line. But we've basically always had that as a component of the modern era. That's where Andrew Breitbart's line _"Politics is downstream from culture"_ comes from.
    No, the reality is actually darker than that (both in the Black Mirror episode as well as our world). Here, our newest form of culture/entertainment IS politics itself. There is nothing separate between our cultural and political systems. Each cultural moment has some sort of inherent political undertones. Likewise, everything in our politics will invariably have some cultural implications. This idea of people treating politicians as celebrities (or the inverse where celebrities are expected to be political leaders) to the point where nearly everyone will mention a politician if you ask them to name famous people.
    As far as the very typical (left-wing/progressive) bias displayed by the Black Mirror show goes, it's not surprising that they ALWAYS portray conservatives/right-wingers as the backwards, judgemental, hateful, crass, fake, greedy, rich, and so forth. That's basically the same through-line in all modern media (with some exceptions.) But what people seem to fail to realize is that the morality of any political organization can be reversed or seen from the opposition. It doesn't matter which group you choose as your antagonist, there will be a relatively even split in the audience.
    The only reason I say anything about it now is that it seems lazy, or possibly coordinated, for nearly all of the entertainment industry to constantly and relentlessly portray anyone to the "right" of Chairman Mao as corrupt, incompetent, self-righteous, evil, or oppressive. But it's because of this unending slander that hatefulness and resentment arise. It's just really aggravating and fascinating at the same time.

      Beautifully put.
      Monroe is "stuck up", Waldo guys are "geezers" - so a lot of resentment colours their views.. but "Jack Napier" wasn't exactly living pay to pay cheque (like the "single mum" they used a proxy to bait Monroe...)

    The episode started off good but towards the end it chopped off its own foot.
    Jamie came off as a bigger pussy by the end. Pissed off at his own character more than those parasites who are cordially sucking the world dry.
    It gives the wrong message to just empower any asshole for the sake of voting rather than making a statement.
    Not giving a vote or voting a cartoon character symbolizes the fact that politicians are bullshit and we don't trust them anymore. The episode missed a great opportunity in my opinion.
    If the ending depicted that none of the parties deserves our vote, that would have made perfect sense.

    It's really hard for me to pick a favorite episode of Black Mirror because honestly, I love them all. But The Waldo Moment is definitely in my top 3. Among so many other political happenings, It so perfectly predicted and portrayed Trump that it's almost sickening to watch. I mean Waldo not only sounds like him but LOOKS like him! After watching your San Junipero ending explained though, I have to ask: what do you think is up with the Bisexual Lighting with Waldo?!?!

    Just think we coulda had our own waldo moment if filthy frank had got into politics just as a meme or troll. I think he'd be voted for maybe even be the president of the whole world by now. Oh how I wish people like John Stewart and Kyle Kulinski ran for office, but yea he's right the comedians the pundits they may have fair points and even tell the truth way better then any political figure ever had that dont mean they have the answer tho. That dont mean they can fix it, tho I will say Zelensky in Ukraine is showing you can be a comedian and still care still be a good leader(despite all the russian bots saying "oh he's taking all the money tho") he's more of a real courageous man, more of a leader, and more of a comedian then putin and all his oligarch friends put together.
