Its amazing to think that the creators came up with a way to have Mario move behind the background features and thereby avoid enemies and slip into an alternate exit for the stage and chose not do much else with it. It kinda speaks to how creative they are, that they just come up with ideas so good that they could serve as the main mechanic for a separate video game and to them its just a quick one-time action you take just to find a hidden item and emphasize that the game is meant to be set on a stage where there are props that Mario can go behind. This has been the best James and Mike Monday in a while. I really enjoy these uploads but the long rut time and sort of friendly competition of completing the game was great to watch! I'd love to see you guys do something similar for Super Mario World on the SNES in the future!
Anybody else grow up calling that bonus coin area “Coin Heaven?” That was all I ever knew it as. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody else call it that. Curious where that started.
They called it that in Nintendo Power and a few other guides. Here is a quote from Nintendo Power that mentions it "Kick the Koopa left so he clears away some of the blocks, then jump into this space to make a Magic Note Block appear. Jump on it and press Up to get to Coin Heaven. Once there, run back and forth to get the speed you need to fly. In the sky, at the middle of the stage, is a 1-Up!"
Coin Heaven sounds smarter than what I called it. I use to call it corn land. Why? In the snes version the clouds had a texture like corn on the cob, so 6 year old me thought mario was running on corn.
Me and my girl are playing this in the quarentine. On a nintendo mini. And some times i find my self about to tears remember plying this when i was a little kid. Almost remember the smell of the afternon, the colors, and voices of my grands, my mom, i can split a tear, was awesome to be a kid in the 90s.
That’s one positive thing to come out of this whole mess; revisiting and sharing some of these old games. I’ve been playing super Mario galaxy on a Wii I found at a goodwill some years back. I shit you not, one of the planets looks exactly like the coronavirus!
109:30 James and Mike both have super Jersey accents at times. I love it when James says "woof" in stead of "wolf" and when he says "mowdin" instead of "mountain."
He seems to need to concentrate a lot, and that’s normal. I was playing a shrine in botw while my 4 year old was playing a game and kept talking to me about it. It’s not easy to play when you are giving your attention elsewhere
Watching you guys play this brings back a lot of memories. It just struck me that this was one of the earlier games that is so.... rewarding. The moment princess peach comes running to you instead of just mario running to her. Then listening to that heartfelt ending music while you're being taken back to all the worlds you've struggled finishing even the ones we skipped (we all did that) the game is just so memorable that i consider finishing it as one of the biggest accomplishments I've done when i was a kid.
Mario - Bowser main villain, Peach, Luigi, Toad are allies Luigi - Ghosts and WaLuigi main villains, Daisy, Yoshi, Prof Gadd are allies Wario - Mario and Captain Maple Syrup are main enemies, Cpn Maple and Mario and WaLuigi are also (sometimes) his allies Wario is best plumber
6 Golden Coins is a great GameBoy game. Really good power ups that are used in interesting ways to progress through levels. Really hope you guys do it on a Monday to bring back the memories!
I always used a cloud on the middle castle in world 8 since you can immediately go to the pipe on the left and when you die, you start there as going through the pipe zones counts as beating a level.
Awwwwww, when I clicked on this I expected Mike and James in the same room, but this cursed pandemic has also taken that away from us! Curse you coronavirus!
Mike just goes on autopilot crush mode...as an even older gamer (48) from the golden era of arcade games we would call this "the zone" and damn is Mike in it. James you can tell had to relearn and wasn't bad just Mike is in a whole different world.
This is the best J&MM ever, wow I loved this so fucking much, the fact that they went through the entire game was awesome, and I love the idea of playing it together simultaneously this way like many of us did as kids with our friends on the phone. I’d love to see more episodes like this

I don't think you actually do want to see that. You would lose your mind at how bad he was! He is like a grandpa when it comes to any game after 1995. Did you see him try to play the Resident Evil 2 Remake?
I really appreciate you guys still working on videos during this time. Going through all this effort to keep putting out videos while still being in isolation takes a lot of work and we all appreciate it.
Broooooo. I have this game absolutely mastered, that it disturbs me to play. There's nothing that I don't already know about it. I've never beat Zelda, but I can breeze by this game with ease. I can't blame James for having difficulty. It's been awhile. There were so many ways they could had gone through the game without having problems. He persevered in the end. So props to him.
I was laughing so hard on some these sections! James, you are a riot and Mike, you are a respectful pro. Reminds me of myself and my brother going through this and many other games. At first I was stressed out watching him play, but then I couldn't stop laughing because it was like he was doing everything possible to ruin his chances 🤣
@@JonnyBoi12 It didnt look like James was having fun
Amezingly enough his last live did saved him from it's grace as soon he discovered that hidden 1 up mushroom, what a 0 live can bring to you, just wow.
I love that James forgot how to get the 1-3 whistle even though part of the HELL joke in the old AVGN episode involved begging at the unholy white block
His memory isn't super good. I noticed that in some of his newer videos.
Jacob Lake you try to remember things from 2006 or so, it’s not that easy...
@@Usario321 it was 2008 but fair enough
He's old. Can you blame him?
dude made about 200 videos. he only made them once. We've seen em 20 times and know every detail.
John Cleese had a story about forgetting the lines to one of Monty Python's famous sketches, and half the audience prompted them.
Fans often know a creator's content more than the creator.
"I just kicked this card game's ass" haha love it. Keep it up, boys! This is the fun content we need now.
24:00 Switch for adults? Are you kidding me? My Switch is basically a $300 means of playing Dark Souls anywhere I please.
Props on the editing! I can pretty much guarantee this took a long damn time to finish.
40:32 Mike playing the Japanese Mario 2. His reaction is priceless.
Thank you Mike, I never knew that trick for getting into the beaten castles in Super Mario World! This is a fun video
Nostalgia trip: here we go!
*when you find the free 1up in Bowser's castle*
"Bowser, I've come to bargain..."
I understood that reference.
I’ve been watching you guys for several years now, and I just wanted to commend you guys for taking social distancing seriously! Keep making hilarious videos!
40:36 OMG, I know I shouldn't be, but I'm laughing my ass off with this on repeat. :D
🤣🤣🤣🤣💯
This has been the best James and Mike Monday in a while. I really enjoy these uploads but the long rut time and sort of friendly competition of completing the game was great to watch! I'd love to see you guys do something similar for Super Mario World on the SNES in the future!
Oh my gosh finally!!!! Also how ironic that I was just playing this today. Could you do Super Mario 64 some day?
@@rustyshackleford6633 Thank you!
Well technically coincidences aren't expected to happen, so it could be considered ironic.
@@SlipknlovThat's not how irony works!
Anybody else grow up calling that bonus coin area “Coin Heaven?” That was all I ever knew it as. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody else call it that. Curious where that started.
No but, i thought it.
It didn’t start anywhere; that’s just what kids logically called it.
I think it's called "coin heaven" in the manual.
I agree. Another game that takes me back to a specific day is Little Samson, which they have recently played also.
That’s one positive thing to come out of this whole mess; revisiting and sharing some of these old games. I’ve been playing super Mario galaxy on a Wii I found at a goodwill some years back. I shit you not, one of the planets looks exactly like the coronavirus!
Good job editing this together. Wasn’t a jarring shift in quality.
109:30 James and Mike both have super Jersey accents at times. I love it when James says "woof" in stead of "wolf" and when he says "mowdin" instead of "mountain."
James isn't very good at this game. That's surprising considering he's beat Ghosts and Goblins, which is insanely harder.
james is probably the type of person who cant really talk and play well, he's probably alot better when playing on his own
@@FireBocchi That's prob true
He seems to need to concentrate a lot, and that’s normal. I was playing a shrine in botw while my 4 year old was playing a game and kept talking to me about it. It’s not easy to play when you are giving your attention elsewhere
@@BigSnipp also you gotta think he hasnt really picked up the game since he was a kid, easy to get rusty at a game you havent played in years.
@@UltimateGamerCC True, but he does play video games for a living. And he's normally really good.
11:43 "Boot or boob?"
I can't believe that was a serious question.
Luigi Cat just like pussies and pusses
“I’m also going to die infinitely and prolong the torture.” 😂😂😂
"Is there a Mrs Bowser?" I wish I shared their innocence.
Are you talking about Bowsette?
Princess Peach: (sweats heavily) Eh heh.....
What about Mario time machine
They later changed the story so that they aren't actually Bowser's children.
Bowser Jr is now offically Bowser's only child.
Glad to see Mike back! Get him back into the movie review stuff, he’s the ultimate avgn.
SO MUCH PANIC JUMPING
Mario - Bowser main villain, Peach, Luigi, Toad are allies
Luigi - Ghosts and WaLuigi main villains, Daisy, Yoshi, Prof Gadd are allies
Wario - Mario and Captain Maple Syrup are main enemies, Cpn Maple and Mario and WaLuigi are also (sometimes) his allies
Wario is best plumber
I was legit clenched the entirety of James' run of Bowser's Castle.
Love me some social distancing James and Mike Monday’s.
40:31 that random Mystical Ninja training music came from nowhere before that rage out.
6 Golden Coins is a great GameBoy game. Really good power ups that are used in interesting ways to progress through levels. Really hope you guys do it on a Monday to bring back the memories!
Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins is REALLY fun. WAY better than the first Super Mario Land. You guys should definitely play it.
I always used a cloud on the middle castle in world 8 since you can immediately go to the pipe on the left and when you die, you start there as going through the pipe zones counts as beating a level.
Today I learned James didn't play dark souls. That should be an avgn episode
It wouldn't work as Dark Souls are not shitty games. They are hard with lots of bullshit-design, but not bad.
Is there a time stamp where they talk about dark souls?
@@treerich1858 @25:13
Really enjoyed this one. It inspired me to play some SMB3 myself
Awwwwww, when I clicked on this I expected Mike and James in the same room, but this cursed pandemic has also taken that away from us!
Curse you coronavirus!
It should be illegal to say that Coronavirus is even the least bit superior to the late 20th Century Mario games like Mario 3 (NES/SNES). 😊
I’d love to see more episodes like this
Thanks so much for the long episode.
Thank you for revisiting my favourite game of all time! I used to play it on a dusty NES on a TV with wood panelling the size of a chest of drawers, before moving on to the mind blowing bells and whistles of the version on Mario All Stars. Love to you guys for using the modern wonders of technology to keep bringing us great videos, stay safe, Sloofman
25:20 I would love to see James playthrough Dark Souls and lose his mind on some of the boss fights. Kek
Right? My first thought when Mike said that was "Bruh, James can't even SMB3 and you're telling him to Dark Souls 2?! Brutal!"
I don't think you actually do want to see that. You would lose your mind at how bad he was! He is like a grandpa when it comes to any game after 1995. Did you see him try to play the Resident Evil 2 Remake?
grandpa and his grandson play video games together, real wholesome. :)
I really appreciate you guys still working on videos during this time. Going through all this effort to keep putting out videos while still being in isolation takes a lot of work and we all appreciate it.
It makes me happy how much fun James is having with smb3
"There's some couch punching going on over here" 🤣🤣
I played this so much as a kid, I could probably draw a game guide for almost every level. At least the popular route with the warps.
This is one of the best videos I've watched as of late. Great format, great editing, great entertainment! Thank you guys!
“I think I just lost the hammer” lol 🤦🏻♂️
"You'd expect to see a word like 'damn' on Xbox, but on an official Nintendo game??" lol
I was laughing so hard on some these sections! James, you are a riot and Mike, you are a respectful pro. Reminds me of myself and my brother going through this and many other games. What a great episode and brings back so many hilarious memories. When James thought he'd glitched Wold 8-Tank I lost it lol! Awesome vid as always!
I love this style of both of you playing the same game separately vs in the same room . It adds a different sense of humor that I would like to see more of ! :)
