  • This could be the tradie ute bargain of all time.
The GWM Ute Cannon-CC range offers buyers a choice of two 4x4 dual-cab diesel utes with a tray included for around $40K drive-away.
You get a tray thrown in at a no cost, too, and there are two specs available - Cannon, and Cannon L. I tested the latter here, and it's the easiest $2500 justification.
There are plenty of amazing elements to this ute when it comes to the value on offer, and some things that really let you know you didn't buy a Ford Ranger, VW Amarok, Mitsubishi Triton or Isuzu D-Max...
Watch on and let me know if you agree with me in the comments.

    VW Amarok - • Best tradie 4x4 ute? 2...
Toyota HiLux - • Best 4x4 dual cab ute ...
    Mitsubishi Triton - • Mitsubishi Triton 2024...

I'm at 69000 KMs in my Cannon L and no issues, no creaks or squeaks, still looks new inside and out. I'm getting around 8.6 L per 100kms. Highly recommend.

I got my Cannon X in January 2023, now I’ve put 44,000kms on it. I doubt it at the beginning since even being a Chinese guy I didn’t own a Chinese car before, only Japanese cars because their reliability. Will see how my X goes for the next few years, but for now it never let me down yet. My average fuel consumption is 9.6 per 100kms at the moment.

Seriously why the f%%% woudl you spend more on a Ford that will need warranty repairs and glitches fixed.

What’s the payload? Family of five and a 1.5 trailer? That’s great if it can carry 550-600kg comprised of passengers and trailer down ball load, plus gear and fuel! That has to be 800kg on the vehicle. I’ll go check. Got me interested in one of these instead of the dual cab 79 series

They are a great ute. You didn't show the best feature for trades by folding up the back seats leaving heaps of room to store your more expensive tools inside the cab. The whole rear seating compartment becomes a large storage area.

Thank you for the review and it does seem like a LOT of ute for the money. Did some research, and yeah given Great Wall Utes have been around for ages and I do see quite a few here in north queensland that are clearly 10 or older. I wonder what companies like Isuzu can do to address the value imbalance. Japanese only buyers are long on their way out of the workforce, and you can't really get new old stock parts for older Japanese cars like you used to, and I mean stuff like water pumps. Very interesting and a bit worrying times. I just hope the GWM holds to the same don't fuss if it works mantra that made so many japanese utes such tradie legends.

Hi Matt, watch the nah sayers clamber all over this.
The GWM range is truly awesome, the cabins are the place to be, I find them so appealing, maybe it's just the size & comfort along with the tidy layout.
People who have purchased them love them.
Country folk are buying them, once again, against what nah sayers think.
I actually suspect cab chassis is the logical choice for country/rural folk.
I can see they are affecting Hilux sales, as farmers whom always had hiluxes in the past have Cannons now, that's just how it is, they are appealing.
    Farmers don't require 500nm,
400 definitely adequate and most likely more grunt than the old Hilux it's replacing.
18" wheels over the top for farm ute, but it's what offer.

Owner of 2 Cannons here! 1 Cannon-X with 35,000 kms and a Cannon-LCC with 3,500kms so far for work stuff. Honestly can't fault them. Was hesitant at first, but after putting 30,000 on the Cannon-X in a year and a bit I was without a question getting a second one for work uses (landscaping / maintenance) and for all the tech and 4x4 capabilities for the price its great!
People need to start realising GWM are making BIG! waves in Australia and they should no longer be considered the 'cheap Chinese car' as they are honestly competing against the likes of Isuzu, Mazda and Toyota regarding capabilities.
The only question is will my 2 Cannons make it past 200,000kms. (realistically, if its for work purposes its getting traded in before then, and yeah they lose a bit of value for being a 'chinese' car but id rather lose 50% value on a $40,000 car than 25% value on a $75,000 car!

After talking to maybe 100 canon owners over 3 years only a couple negatives. I’m getting 9 litres on hwy 11 around town.I love it.

Not a ute person me but this seems to be a no brainer, just a thought on safety would it not be a good idea to install a reversing beeper that can be heard outside like what trucks use and on all vehicles from the smallest hatchback to the biggest 4WD it could be a life saver in supermarket carparks and driveways. surely safety stuff like this shouldn't be too complicated.

Let's hope they offer the petrol hybrid drivetrain as an option in all of these vehicles as GWM have just put the petrol hybrid engine in the top spec Cannon Alpha twin cab variants. If they make the petrol hybrid engine optional it will give GWM a big jump on the competition and not just in price.

Thanks for the review. My only negative or question would be about warranty repairs and the time that it takes…not that ford is good at this. Also the dealer network and the associated repair times. This might be something to add to your reviews. It is a point that is very much considered. No good having a work horse that isn’t running for a month or more…!

GWM (unlike the likes of ldv etc) actually have a very decent network across Australia! Coming from first hand experience as an owner of 2 Cannons I had to get my Aircon pump replaced (due to my own stupidity not a car fault) and it was ordered, arrived and fit within 2 weeks. Took Toyota longer than that to organise a bulbar for my dads '22 rogue

Actually i think those servicing intervals are pretty normal, I don't think any car should exceed 10k /12mon between oil changes, Also i think the delay you speak of with starting on cold mornings is because its waiting for the glow plugs to do their thing, Its the same for any diesel engine, Actually i might explain that better, With a key start you can (if you dont want to wait for the glow plug light to go out) just go straight through to ignition, But its not good for the motor, Im guessing the push button start is overriding you and doing the right thing.

    • @therightcar
