I have never felt like it needs to accelerate any faster while driving normally around town etc. its not designed to be a race car. I towed a caravan around australia, and i had no issues at all. Its just that as humans we always expect more and more power, we can never be content with what we have. When you say it needs more power, you also need to clarify why. For instance you can ask, Can it climb a hill offroad with its current power - Yes. Can it drive along the road anywhere at the posted speed limit - Yes. Can it tow 3000kg at highway speeds - Yes. Does it have good fuel economy because of its smaller engine - yes. So the needing more power is only based on your specific requirements for the vehicle. for instance, if you ask, do you need to accelerate to 100 in less than 10 seconds for whatever reason? And the answer is yes, then you will need more power. If you know what i mean. Its all about what you need it to do, and can it do it.

If GWM came out with a 500NM 2.0 and there was ANY sort of reliability issue the consequence in terms of reputation damage would be higher than for say Ford. From a marketing point of view, the potential long term consequence from failures would outweigh the short term wins from sales. They will get there, just look at Hyundai 15 odd years ago. 500NM from a 2.0 is still a big ask. That Ford engine must be running close to 30psi boost compared to 20-22 for some of the competitors with similar style engines (tech/design/materials).
In the power aspects, gwm is doing kinda like toyota style, pretty conservative compared to Ford. Engine in the cannon is code-named 4d20m with a single turbo, they once had a 4d20t with 2 turbos just like Ford's engine, but they only came out with 420NM. Even the bigger one in Shanhai Cannon which is the 4d24 2.4, only came out with 480NM, somewhat like the early factory toyota 2.8 and 3.0 style.
lots of people look into power but not realizing they won't be using 50% of any ute most of the time unless you use it for caravans. So as a work ute for me, its great value
My base model gwm lives at the top of cake york, I have the only one here and its done 25k this year. Its gone back and forth on the PDR 4 times on some of the worst corrigations in AUS. The superior 4wd performance and features for the cost is nothing less than extraordinary to the average Joe. Car reviews by the bigger guys always talks down the great value and capabilities of this vehicle, it's embarrassing hearing the desperate non sencical faults after each challenge the GWM takes on and devours. You can tell the car review cuts are out of touch and have free use of vehicles with a petrol card from the bigger brands. Who else sees the bias here?

They are mixing it with the more dominant brands, but are actually suppling the "I wants" desires to these off road buyers, and its certified from factory, Yes! It's not just a sticker package. Query Paul, why expert mode when road driving? Isn't it purely designed for off road use, ie. to tune the cross axle beam traction control to be still more responsive than on road traction control. That's what I understand from watching Cannon owners reviews. It's not a compromise for a sports button, surely.
I don't get why is it necessary to conduct the lane keeping capability on a race track-like road where the road is sloping transversely. I think car's lane keeping is designed to keep the cars inside a lane on normal flat road. Will cars that are able to keep their lanes on a sloping track in your tests act overzealous in normal road conditions?
Good review. Dunno what happened with the semi autonomous steering. I can drive from gold coast to Brisbane without steering or braking. These things r good
Got to agree. I drive home from site and don't have to touch the wheel (if I chose too). Round bends etc no problem, and in sports mode on cruise , you are basically a passenger.
The Cannon has proved itself a competent offroader, how much of a substantial difference does this make between the regular Cannon and this? Also @carexpert I dont think its wise to tell people to put throttle mods on this as thats going to void that long warranty you get with this truck. Point is this truck isnt a racer, if you want that get a Amarok or Ranger, just be prepared to spend way more than this is asking for the pleasure. What this offers is a good offroader with decent fuel economy and tech to save you or hinder you depending how you use it.

As someone born in China, I would advise against considering products from LDV, as they seem to lack reliability. LDV is a sub-brand of SAIC Motor, a state-owned enterprise, and generally in China, products from private enterprises tend to be more competitive and reliable. Although MG has indeed improved vehicle reliability by reallocating a significant portion of its R&D resources to Shanghai, it's still not considered a top-tier brand in China. LDV vehicles hardly sell in the domestic market due to their weaker offerings compared to competitors, and MG also struggles with sales in China. Both brands under SAIC Motor largely rely on the Commonwealth markets to sustain. Currently, among the Chinese cars available in Australia, Great Wall Motors and BYD are considered top-tier brands. Personally, I purchased a Haval H6 in Australia.
Considering here its says could do with a lift, if it was for a lot of offroad work, would you think a Nav SL Warrior be a better pick? It is roughly 10k more.
I have been a fan of the value for money Chinese utes. I bought one of the first LDV T60s and when the time came to trade in, I seriously considered the Canon. I ended up buying a Used BT-50 for two reasons. Incredibly poor after market service and support for these vehicles. They are obviously happy to sell you these cars but before YOU buy one, speak with people about trying to get them fixed, get parts and accessories. Even considering that they are bargains, you do end up having to deal with the stress afterwards.
@@selmersoprano Buy one and report back on your warranty claim experience. Horrible in the past. If you didn't service at their dealers and if you missed a service by one day or few km they would reject warranty claim, looking for any excuse to reject warranty claims. You may save up front but could cost you a lot more after you drive out of showroom.
Interesting to hear. I've found the aftermarket assessories available are quite substantial now atleast. The wait time on parts has improved a lot in the last 12 months. I feel the warranty items are dependent on the particular service mob you are using and have heard from a service technician that GWM have been very good at honouring service claims.
@@AG-ze8sj So like literally any other manufacturer ? I had Hyundai threaten to void my warranty because I had my I30N serviced at a performance shop ...
LDV and GWM are entirely different companies. GWM had poor credibility originally because they were previously imported by Ateco who provided pretty much zero in the way of service and warranty. Different story now.. Cant say much about LDV except that SAIC is partially CCP owned which is probably a red flag (pun intended). But I’ve found after sales service of GWM to be at least equal to anything Japanese, Korean or Euro.
It is however if the rear body panel is at same Hight or lower than the wheel center then not required. May older Jeeps never came with rear mud flaps.

I think it represents exceptional value for money. It looks decent. Interior good and seats look nice with the plait stitching. Im seriously thinking of buying one.
I really like the use of the durometer! My favorite show on t.v. in part because of their testing regiment, and that test is a valuable test that in 40 + years they never thought to do, and it's a super cool, and very useful bit of testing right there.
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO AS LITTLE BIT OF WORK TO THAT UTE WITH BEST ON ROAD
I just brought a 2021 dmax x terrain last week and pick up this Friday! Can't wait to get on the tracks! 🔥🤘
Great review man. 👍
You need to go into the settings for the auto drive and turn the sensitivity up and it work very good I use it all the time even if I am towing
Always produced quality videos. really enjoy it
I'm not into dual cab's but if i was this is one I'd buy, rather than the grossly overpriced established brands.
My base model gwm lives at the top of cake york, I have the only one here and its done 25k this year. Its gone back and forth on the PDR 4 times on some of the worst corrigations in AUS. Its only after market parts are fulcrum 50mm lift and a snorkle. So far it has not missed a beat, everything is still tight and nothing rattles. Ill report back when its done 50k.
Love the step at the back pf the tailgate
A shame that the Aus market doesnt get the factory fitted front winch thats included in South Africa
It a shame they didn’t just send the winch and leave the vehicle
I noticed that. Mine has a 4.2T Tmax winch standard.
@@user-vk4vd7vr5t My man, some of those 4x4 pavement parking are pretty high. Its nice to know I wont be stranded with the 12cm cement block I need to bump up on.
I must just call my wife to bring the winch controller that is in storage since I bought the car....
Why is it a "shame"?
Probably supply issues, or they couldn't get the winch regulated
I think the build is excellent , I had a 2020 and now 2024 , no problems , fit and finish on the 2024 A plus , the car for SUV will out handle any SUV on the market.

Excellent review as always. Thank you.
Google Maps Logo!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂 I love Paul's funny comments
It would be interesting to see how the navara would go on the sign waves and offset module
I have a decently kitted out Cannon L and I have to say, I dont miss my 2019 Ford Everest LTD that it replaced. There are some super annoying little things about these cars but everything else makes up for it. They are really great value and getting the kit as stock on the XSR is great.
Another great vid, and surprising too. I spy a Ram truck in the background. Looking forward to the review of that one
Come on GWM, don't ignore Australian market, please bring Shanhai Cannon to here ASAP.
Imagine if this had an another badge on the front? How this would perform in our market? Say - Nissan or Mitsubishi ? I think this will brake the charts?
YOUR BIGGEST KENYAN FAN, SUBSCRIBER, LIKER, COMMENTER RIGHT HERE, AS USUAL, 28/09/2023
Never understood this logo😂😂. Love your review paul
GWM does have a 2.4 turbo diesel with 135kw and 500Nm of torque. It might be pretty suitable for cannon not shanhai cannon whatever.
Shame there's no option to pay for it for the XSR
That's the engine for me.
You listened to my request 😊😊😊
Saudi viewer here really surprised at how good the GMW Poer that's what they are called here yes it sounds stupid they are popular here but we haven't got the XSR pack yet maybe soon we will get it
great review and thank you Paul
The anti Chinese posts are getting less and less😅.
Great looking truck and definitely good off road
in Brazil, gwm confirmed the Poer phev with 400 hp, 3 engines, 2 electric and 1 flex fuel (gasoline and ethanol)
I ❤ data, because nothing is as clear as those sweet, sweet numbers!
So waited for this, absolutely smitten with GWM's 4WD products of late.
Enjoying the video from Pakistan love your videos paul
Karachi or Quetta ?😅
Love your reviews! Can you please do a comparison of all the entry model utes please?
That’s a great idea! Not all of us can or want to spend $50k for a Ute. A comparison from you guys would be great please!
Awesome review.. the logo on the front grill is a radar?
Imagine they made a single cab flat deck of this .. cool!
Yes gwm's p series ute( power) which is ironically wrong, does have a p badge on the front .
Press cruise control twice for lane keep assist function, not just lane alert.
AWESOME VIDEO 💯😍
Theres some decent tuning kits for these, which significantly increases the power output.
Really shows how much other maker up charge for the same features that it has
Really shows how much Chinese manufacturers get subsidised by their government. There, fixed your comment for you, you are welcome 🤗
@@rsoul7282No they are not subsidized. In fact they are forced to compete for manufacturing license before only a handful got it. The rest were put out of business.
@@rsoul7282 US, European and Japanese manufacturers get subsidies from their origin country and they have been getting subsidies for many decades more then the manufacturers you are trying to denigrate.
Biggest question is: where is the please subscribe sticker on your suitcase that’s usually on there in the rear camera. 😄
Thank you for another great review Paul!!
I would stay away from throttle control after market mods. Due to warranty issues. Also after market throttle controlers can damage the engine after a period of time.
Id be more inclined to go to great wall to see if they have a software update like the others cannons get. To shorten the turbo lag. . But if be inclined to buy one these as i don't need a fast car but something just to go on the beach with the family this would be perfect.
They dont affect warranty, have one on our isuzu mux for years now, hasnt damaged nothing
@@petersaunders7535
It will affect warranty on drive train issues.
Dealer will use that as a reason parts fails
@@Robert-cu9bm no they dont, had ours on 3 years no issues with it and no issues when car is returned for warranty issues.... and if you worried about warranty just unplug it its plug and play simple, shit some dealers even sell them
Full of shit. Have one on my ute for over 4 years. Never had an issue with warranty and does nothing to the gearbox. You don't know anything
G'day Paul would you remap a gwm and is it safe to do so thanks mate 😂😂😊
The Logo is the end of a Cannon barrel hence the design of a big O, Hence why the 4WD is called The Cannon
A remap fixes the power from boostech and it makes a world of a difference.
A remap voids your warranty, so hope you don't have any claims
A lot for your buck. Are those physical buttons below the centre touch screen for HVAC?
Waiting for the Shanghai model
I have 1 question I have seen in South African reviews of the Xsr they have a winch mounted to the factory front bumper just wondering if this is an option in Australia please advise regards Matty keep up the good work on the reviews excellent information
Hi I just purchased this Ute today and i thought the same thing about power as it was down compared to the Musso and the LDV, What performance mods would you recommend to get a bit of power into it ? Thank you

Another great video, on a great test track. Unfortunately, you are always missing some important data! Breakover Angle, tire size?? Thanks.
Spelling error on the main screen, says "voice assit" instead of 'voice assist'???
Great review and tests.
Terrific value for money, needs a bigger engine.
So as someone who owns one, and who tows racecars alot up and down New Zealands mountains, I have never had a issue with the engine been to small, the thing he doesn't touch on at all, but that ZF gearbox is amazing. its economy is insane.
@@NotSean269 We have a cannon around town averages 11L per 100kms, How is that insane from a tiny 2.0L 4cylinder
@@HyperFragHD So I thinking I'm getting something similar to that, Why is it insane, well cause I'm towing a double axle with a Rally car and all the spare parts, just think of that weight, that little 2.0L is hauling between 5 to 5.5 TONS of weight, and from where I'm sitting in the drivers seat its doing it fkn comfortably and easily, as i said I've never felt the car struggle, I have cruise on at 90 (Legal limit when towing here) and its happy days. And without the trailer it gets amazing Fuel, so yeah I rate its actually pretty epic.
@@NotSean269 Well i don't know why but ours is stock standard with fiberglass canopy and averages 10-11L around town.
My stock old V6 Navara with the 3.0L got around 12L per 100.
The car isn't efficient mate simple as that
The Chinese brands are becoming very competitive. Can you please do a review on the LDV Mifa people mover. We currently have a 2004 carnival with a family of 6 and are looking to upgrade in the near future. Pretty much set on another carnival but would love to see what else is a decent option.
Pretty good value for money actually.
What a rip off and slow af
Certainly not for me but I am surprised at the traction control looks to be far better than the D Max
@paulmaric which app are you using to measure the speed? Thanks
Considering here its says could do with a lift, if it was for a lot of offroad work, would you think a Nav SL Warrior be a better pick? It is roughly 10k more.
My lane assist in the cannon X is spot on.
On mine too. But i noticed that the road markings are of poor standard
I like the Car Expert
Find real previous owners and ask them for experience. Don't buy purely based on face value, youtube reviews and positive or even negative comments here. I know many people with bad experience.
Living in the past mate no issue these days with parts
just needs a second turbo maybe for more grunt? and blind spot and this would be almost perfect. for the dollar you cant beat it.
Strange how the cheaper variants X, Vanta have blind spot as standard, but they took it away on the XSR. That is was a mistake by the manufaturer
Leaf suspension?
Are parts expensive for the GWM Cannon range if need replacing or servicing?
What's the warranty ? Might have missed it in the vid.
7 years
Voice Assit?
Its strange that there are no rear mud flaps. I thought it is a legal requirement to have them fitted on a 4WD vehicle.
It is however if the rear body panel is at same Hight or lower than the wheel center then not required. May older Jeeps never came with rear mud flaps.
its a good truck but i would been happy if it has a powerful engine and the off-road man that is next level for the GWM. looks like they have do got work in it lets talk
GWM launched the "Shanhai" Cannon in 2022, which is more high-end and refined with a 3.0 engine, the interior is next level.
@@wayneli4070 now that is something i will be keeping my eye on can't wait to see that
Amazing how much the Aussie dollar has been devalued in so few years. I've got a 2019 Foton Tunland I bought new for $27500. Had no drama's with it, but no way would I spend almost double the price on another Chinese ute.
2.0 4 cylinder, turbo charged... ffs. why. Get an older isuzu dmax. it'll last longer than these chinese knock off's.
keep sending it Marić. Loving your work.
Any advice on after market recovery points for the XSR? Can't find any anywhere!
It has four recovery points built in. They are forward and rear facing. If they were pointing downwards then they would only be tie down points.
@@graemewilson3652 yes but they are only welded on and they are not rated

The asian brands have really lifted the interior standards

Why the logo upfront is different than the one on the rear and steering wheel?
Yeah, i was wondering that as well. I think the rear badge would look better on the grill than the round gizmo, it looks cheap.
