  • Detailed review of the GWM Cannon XSR ute, a cheap yet pretty loaded off-road pick-up made in China and sold in Australia.
What are the shortcomings of the GWM Ute? There are a few, as we find out in this review of the new top-spec Cannon XSR grade, reviewed by Chasing Cars expert Curt Dupriez. But there are also upsides to this 2.0L turbo diesel pick-up, not least that it is far more affordable than rivals like the Toyota Hills, Mitsubishi Triton, Ford Ranger or Nissan Navara.
Check out our long-term GWM Cannon ute review: • Does Our GWM Ute Survi...

I love my cannon x, fitted lift kit and mild deisel tune, much much cheaper than the others, used money saved on extras and still comes in under,

There's a lot of misinformation in this review to be honest. Reviewer talks about it having "knobbly mud tyres" when it doesn't, it has A/Ts. Also compares its power to V6, which makes no sense given that it's only a 4 cylinder. Talks about the tyres being able to spin on take off in 2wd. You can do this in any ute if you tried (even new ones) and I'd be more worried if you weren't able to. Compares the suspension to a coil rear sprung Raptor, which again makes no sense (and also has a lower towing capacity because of this).
Feels like a bit of bias and comparing apples to oranges

When I worked in construction, I have driven other uts like dmax, hilux, triton, ranger extensively and I would not spend more money than the Cannon to get any of the others. If you want to go quick, buy a sports car or EV, which I also have. I love my Cannon because is not quick and calm just carries shits from bunnings from time to time and like it or not, it has features.

We had two Wingle 6 2.4 from 2019 to 2023 and used them for high altitude offroad expeditions in South America. They could do almost everything a Hilux can do. They where surprisingly robust (by far not on Hilux level but better, than expected). The huge pitfalls and the reason to replace them with Hilux have been availability of spare parts and quality of mechanics (the professionals). For Toyota, you find a capable mechanic and spare parts in every village. If you need a spare part for a GWM, you wait 3 months, if the mechanic is capable of ordering the correct part, and 6 months, if not (if the part is still produced).

    Not a very neutral review.
Most of the negatives identified in the review are shared with a lot of the competitors that cost a little more.
The Hilux has very few features and is priced well above where it should be for what you get for your money

Decent review. I have personally taken these on test runs and they seemed pretty good on road to me. I think the only other Ute in the price range that drove better "on road" was the Musso, but having said that, the Musso falls way short with the Off-road aspect and by the time you add on simple things such as side steps and an under-body protection you are nipping at 50k. I also know more than one person who has had to return both new model Hilux and Rangers for blowing transmissions, and engines. I think it is far too early to be throwing the baby out with the bathwater yet. I have seen some good owner testimonials at different intervals that are difficult to argue with.

It just works. Drives like a car, has ability to be modified into off road vehicle. I recommend the Ssangyong Musso as a long term vehicle.

just a repeat of other reviews, which tries to find anything it can to bash the car. It is one of the best off-roaders and the best if going under 80k. Your off-road test was also quite basic.
On-road sure not as good as some others but decent have travelled 16hours straight and was comfortable.
For me with the warranty, hardware and all the features it has. It is very hard to recommend another ute for off-roading.
....And everyone agrees the motor is underpowered but it still got me up massive rocky incline hills in the high country vic

mate, these guys will bash it day and night, heavily tied pockets to the old brands possibly. I have a Cannon for the last 3+ years and a previous Ranger Owner. The other day we've gone to visit family and got a Ranger Wildtrak wth 25k on the clock for an airport rental. First off, it sounds like Bonzo's tractor and actually the Ranger felt like it needed power to get going/moving despite the fact it has so much more power (bullshit argument these guys flinging all the time). Otherwise, my Cannon felt more refined in every way except, I admit, the Ranger soaked up bumps a bit better. So, I'm happy with my crappy chin car. The others can eat their oats if I care what they think...

Modern vehicles fitted with DPF need hot running on open roads for a distance at least every couple of weeks. Short stop start and idol running around town unban environments shopping and so on will build up co2 in the DPF quickly and the engine light will show, therefore requiring a manual burn off. A friend has a 2019 De-max and the DPF would not clear. It was professionally cleaned but the fault persisted. It turns out it was a faulty sensor. Its about finding out the cause?
As for lag issues you need to learn how to operate the Normal Eco and Sport mode to optimize affective speed and quick take off. Its about learning to navigate the control as if you are driving a manual.
Just saying, depending on what the vehicle is being used for, if its just as a round towner your better off with a petrol, regardless of model.

I have a holden jackaroo with about 260nm of torque. Its done some amazing things, hauled wood, camper trailers and pulled logs, fences and other vehicles out of the shit. Now I am hearing that 400nm is not enough!!!! Selling people shit they don't need on the basis that "one day" you might need to pull 3 tonnes. Why are people paying big money for 2H landcruisers? Because 500nm is bullshit for the average person.

    • @peter6516
      @peter6516 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

True. I had a single turbo NP300, 400nm Navara for 5 years and 500k kms. Ultra reliable, took cars on the trailer around regional NSW with ease. But did find it sucked plenty of diesel when towing, my only complaint. Great fuel economy except when towing. But with 120 kW and 400nm, never an issue.
The brainiacs at GWM are not stupid. They know that 120kw and 400nm is more than enough for the average punter and probably keeps costs down.
I suppose the twin turbos like LDV will likely be better on the fuel economy so that's possibly one advantage when towing with more grunt.
