A tip I have discovered is that in the summer time Walmart carries a big 10 or 15lb bag of baking soda in the pool supply aisle for cheaper per pound than the box in the laundry aisle.
Speed queen!! I got so tired of buying new washers that dont last..(8 kids on a farm!) Did some research and hubs found me an older speed queen..LOVE IT. No special buttons..so basic.
We went with speed queen about 2 years ago after having a front load washer for close to 10 years. So glad my front load quit on me! We were tight on $ so went with the basic model (no options for small/medium/large loads, you get full tub or you don’t wash). That is my only complaint but I don’t consider it to be worth worrying about. Love my speed queen!

When my kids were little and we had very little money, I used to buy a used washing machine and it usually lasted about a year. Soooo much cheaper than going to the laundrymat!
I've done 198 loads of laundry since January 2024. My husband has a lawn service, and there's laundry almost every day. I know how many loads, because I pay myself $1 a load. I have saved a lot of money this year, just by really measuring my detergent. I give to a family in need with most of the savings. I don't miss the money and it's fun. My daughter uses this formula. She loves it.
My Sweet Mama, bought a new washer many years ago. She dropped a quarter in the jar every time she did a load of laundry, this was in 1969. That's how she made her payments on the new washer. Mama was a sweetheart. Every time I put a dollar bill in my savings, I think of her. I still miss my Mama...every day.
I’ve been making my own laundry detergent for the past couple of years now & it’s not only cheaper, but it gets my clothes clean without all the harsh chemicals and stuff!
I made the dry washing powder in the past with Fels-Naptha soap and had greasy spots on my clothes because I only use cold water. Be sure to use a liquid formula of homemade detergent if you use only cold water.
Huh. I use Fels-Naptha as a pre-wash by rubbing the bar with water over the grease areas and then toss in the washer (I have a crappy tumble washer) and it gets all the spots off my clothes because I forget to wear the dang apron I made when I cook.

I’ve been making, my own laundry detergent recipe for over 15 years. The recipe is ‘how she does it laundry detergent’ w/ printable recipe & labels on internet. The best !! Made w/ Zote soap, oxiclean, washing booster, baking soda, Chrystals, washing soda & borax…..I get everything from Walmart.
How do you keep whites from turning yellow, film from forming on clothes and damage to machine? Especially HE washers are meant for liquid detergent. Would love to use something like this but take out the petroleum and SLS and perfum ingredients.
@kellymariehaley It sounds like op uses almost the same recipe I use. It seems to strip the "yuck" off my clothes. My towels have never felt so soft and fluffy. I turned mine into a liquid-ish soap and had a 5 gallon bucket of soap
Washing soda is baked/heated baking soda. That is it. The chemistry of it changes after being heated, changing it into sodium "whatever". ;D The combo of the two forms of sodium "whatevers" for laundry is likely why it cleans and deodorizes so well. Fels-naptha soap gives my son-in-law a rash and my daughter and I sometimes react to it. Olive oil is so expensive now, buying premade castile soap is a better and cheaper idea than me whipping up a batch. I had made a coconut salt soap a while back that may be good too. It is very cleansing without causing skin problems. Thank you! I had not made any for a while and was using "safe and clean" (maybe?) laundry soap because I wanted something without the fels-naptha and borax. Borax is great, but it needs very hot water to melt properly and can be harsh on elastic, like on our underthings. The model without any digital anything, top-loading washer, KNOBS, even an extra rinse option. Center agitator, a bleach dispenser and a rinse for fabric softener (I use vinegar) in the agitator. The dryer does not have a buzzer, which I am fine with. They were even cheaper than the fancy digital set. Oh, they can be worked on and made of steel, not plastic and beer cans. One day I am going to sweetly smile and ask my grandson to weld together stands for them to set upon so I can clean under them. The lifts are expensive and you still cannot clean under them. I miss the days the fridges where also just enough off the floor to get a ruler with a towel under them to get dust, dog food, dropped whatever... from under them. Trivia- Some Chinese cooks who make their own noodles bake a little baking soda before adding it to the flour because it makes a better flavored Chinese noodle. Some use just the baking soda. I am guessing 1 tsp of baked baking soda (technically washing soda for us) in a homemade batch of noodles is not toxic because they have been doing it for many decades if not longer?

I told her to wash her work clothes (not even really dirty clothes) in her tumble washer with an extra rinse then give them to me to run through a load in mine. She did. When my machine filled up the first time and agitated for about 5 minutes, with her watching I opened up the lid and let her see the water. It was like looking through fog. I told her she was wearing that "fog" crap against her skin daily, sleeping on it, AND she had psoriasis sores that BLED constantly. People, DO NOT GET TUMBLE WASHERS. Hi there! Just wanted to come back to this video to say thanks for this laundry soap recipe! I made a smaller batch to try right afterwards and I've been using it since. I absolutely love it!
I’ve been making my own soap now for about two years now. It’s a liquid version. Dr. Bonners, baking soda, kosher salt, hot water, and essential oil if you want. I love it.
I tried liquid and powder soap recipes in the past but I was never satisfied with the cleaning power. There were always stains that were just not coming out … how is your soap??
I've been making my own laundry detergent for years with bar soap (Sunlight until I couldn't get it & ordered Fels-Naptha online), super washing soda, baking soda, mule team Borax, Downy Unstopables & Great Value Oxiclean. Then, I use the scoop from the oxiclean as the laundry scoop. Barely more than a heaping tablespoon. I very rarely ever use 2 scoops for anything unless it's REALLY dirty or really stinky. Whites have never been brighter, clothes have never been cleaner and I can still smell the clean laundry smell WEEKS later! Heather xo
@@katieolson3353 I give all the credit to where I got the recipe from - Heather @Kneady Homesteader. Here's the direct link to the video & the recipe! She's a Michigander & her videos are great! :) th-cam.com/video/eCNrtbaOxig/w-d-xo.html
Washing soda is sodium carbonate. By cooking sodium bicarbonate ( baking soda) be careful... afterwards, washing soda ( sodium carbonate) can be harsh on the hands and skin in its pure form.
Can't wait to try it! For the 2 of is it should well last over a year. Many many years ago i bought a Maytag washer with the agitator. Even tho the inner cabinet is pretty rusty its still going strong .A huge thanks to everyone for warning me about these new fangled😅 washers! When mine conks out I will remember this when looking for another one. However i think this old maytag will outlive me! Also i could not find the link for your oxyclean recipe with the lemon juice and peroxide.
We have a septic tank. What do we have to be careful about using? And why? We are newbies and appreciate everything that you can help us with. Thank you have a wonderful blessed day.
Septic tanks work off of good bacteria and anything you add to the tank can kill that off. Things like bleach and anything antibacterial are no’s. Make sure you are using septic tank safe products or make your own. Do a little research since it is new to you. Once you know it’s easy to keep up with. No biggie.
Hello Ali! Love your channel I’ve watched this video several times to make sure I add all the things I need to my cart 😊 question, I know you’ve said to melt in hot water if washing with cold water in an HE front loader, do I put it directly into the tub of clothes or in the detergent dispenser? Thank you again so much for all you do!!
Thx for showing alternative to fels naphtha. I tried making it with that and I couldn't even go into my laundry room bc the smell of the bar of soap sitting there was so potent!!
I would not recommend homemade laundry detergent unless you have a standard, high water usage washer. In contrast, HE washers depend on detergent with enzymes for stain removal.
I also have an HE washer. I found if you use the soak button you get more water . after grating the bar soap run it through a food process with some of the baking soda to make it finer
I make a stain bar for clothes that can be made with tallow or palm oil. The recipe makes 25 bars so you don’t need to use Castile. I sell them for $5. But it doesn’t not cost me that to make. Very simple recipe
Your next washing machine should be a Speed Queen. I❤mine. Expensive, but worth every penny. You'll thank me later😂. Glad i found your channel. Your awesome.
I made this up and was excited to use it! I have a question....the grated soap does not dissolve in the wash, so I ran the same load a 2nd time in hot water, and the clothes still had a bits white soap chunks. Any recommendations???
Oh no! Did you use a fine grate? I have heard some people run it through the blender to break it up more. I haven’t had an issue. I’m sorry though, that sucks and I with I knew how to better help.
@LittleHillHomesteadGa I di regular size grating, I was wondering if I use the fine grate next time if it would be better? If I cannot find a resolve, I will just have to use it up on loads for my hubby's work clothes, but it was not good at all on my dressy work attire😪. Thank you for the response. Love your channel🥰
The one with the handle? It’s actually an antique I got from a ln estate sale years ago. Its anchor hocking and I’m sure they make something sinilar. Its an 8 cup measuring cup.
The only problem with this type of laundry soap is that it leaves a residue behind that will leave your clothes dinghy over time. Petroleum based laundry is a detergent is a better option. I use a 50/50 mix of washing soda and borax as a laundry booster. I add 2 tablespoons to every load of laundry. I use Rockin Green products to wash my laundry. I hate my washing machine too! Manufacturers have taken the lint screen out, so my clothes come out wit a Lot of lint on them. So much so that my husband had to add an extra lint trap to the dryer! Every now and then I will look into getting another washer. They've gone back to putting an agitator post in, probably because they suck at cleaning wiithout one. My biggest pet peve is that I can't add more water to a load if I think it needs more. 😡
Dr Bronners with ur borax & washing soda might be effective. A tbsp per load. Petroleum det is so awful for us 😕 I hear ya tho, I need to get my clothes clean. I make sure to measure det (& clorox2 if they’re lights) every load. I don’t use bleach except to spot treatment stains. I’ve never been able to afford Dr B for laundry but I would if I could. Citric acid for lights didn’t seem to work great, that I remember, but it was a decade ago I used it all for 6-8 mos. Def didn’t work on homemade DW det I made up. Hard water tho-🤷🏼♀️
I'd like to put my tumble washer on FB Marketplace but my hubby wants to wait until we need another washer. I say we need another washer NOW. Selling my tumbler washer could help pay for a agitator washer.
Hello. I came across your videos and love the info. Any suggestions for baking soda substitutions as I also have extremely sensitive skin and can't tolerate baking soda.
Please be careful. Some of the newer washing machines will break. Becuz of homemade detergent. Which will void your warrenty. I dont make homemade detergent. When i can buy in bulk from my sams. Just be careful and double check your warrenty. Other people made homemade detergent. Used it for months and there washers started backing up. Remember it says you need a cup of detergent storebrought to make washer work. Anyway she couldnt get hers fixed. Love your videos
Some skin can’t tolerate det too so ppl make their soaps We don’t even use soap to shower or wash face. We use Norwex cloths, they are silver impregnated and change the water itself to clean u. Only soap on our hands to wash at the sink when needed. Coconut oil w/EOs for dry spots or even olive oil, both sparingly as don’t absorb that quick into skin. Thank God shampoo is tolerated as I buy cheap cheapie stuff n could not afford making that! I wonder if Dr B would be good as shampoo tho… (we did use that for shower before I found Norwex in 2018, swear by those now. Saved loads of money in last 6 yrs!)
Hi, Just subscribed. I am from Canada. Prices are a bit more here. I dont live by a major center. I just ordered off Amazon. I am really going to enjoy watching your videos. I am going to try your recipe. Question? What water level do you use for the 1/4 cup of soap. Thanks
Hi! Happy Thanksgiving. One of our kids moved to Canada a few months ago. The recipe for the soap is in the description if you click more. Hope that helps.
Thanks so much for this! I hate my washing machine as well. Washing sheets and blankets are horrible! Open the washing machine and there's a covered donut in it 😖 is it clean? No clue.
Not very well. You can dilute in hot water and pour that into the washer from what others have said. I would try a small amount on some old towels to see if it works .
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa I suspected that to be the case but it isn’t a biggie since I have to do the same for other laundry powders. Thank you for this recipe. Definitely worth the effort, especially if I can use my old food processor to grate the soap.
I made a powdered laundry soap a few years ago. It had basically the same stuff. I always had a problem with a film on my clothes. Can you tell me if you have a trick for that? I would really like to make some that works for me.
I'm debating. I got a good Maytag top load washing machine with agitator when we moved into the little house. The water is adjustable on it so I just leave it on the "most water" option all the time. My guys are farmers/ranchers/haul manure for a living. DIRTY and STINKY. LOL. I tried this kind of soap in my old top load(it was a fancy one with all the bells and whistles) and I had to replace the pump in it after I used it. The repair guy's first question was whether I made my own soap. he says the new machines are only designed to use commercial soaps.
Living on a Dime channel has a good friend repairman She just uses tiny amts in washer & DW of store dets Like 1T DW powder in the cup u close & none in prewash. I’m doing it now in the DW n seems to work just fine. I figure a $5 box (WM brand) should last me about 14 yrs LOL I use white vinegar in the rinse dispenser.
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa they think I’m crazy. I told him that thing does not get clean clothes they are like I love it I told him flat out I said you about crazy as hell… lmao 🤣
Look into getting a Speed Queen washer. Not the one with the digital buttons. A little more expensive but they are made to do 15 loads a day ! Can't kill them and have a good repair warranty.( Mrs. Ed )
How many large loads would this cover? It says for a year supply, but I have 4 kids, one on the way, a mechanic husband, a dog, and we foster cats.... So I typically go through 2 large loads a day.. curious if this would come close to covering that? Or should I double up?
I hate new HE washing machines. My fancy digital one died (yay!) so I got a dial basic model. Bothtop loaders. It is much better on how much water can get in clothes, but still nothing compared to old school. So I found a video f a washing machine seller who explained that new machines are all based on weight sensors which is what determines water qty. he said to trick machine, put load and start. It will fill according to weight. Then, drain it but do not spin. Now clothes are water logged. Start cycle again and more water will be introduced. I do not like the idea of such water waste. So I bought 2 x 3lb weights (wish I got 5lbs) and put them in a gallon plastic jug that has a wide mouth. I put it in the machine when filling. Then when starts agitating, I pull it out and let cycle go through. Best eco-friendly cheat I could come up with.
I use to. I dissolved the grated soap in water, dumped in bucket and my husband stirred with a drill attachment. It gelled but not solid. It’s heavy in the bucket tho. Search internet for measurements.
Hi! I love your recipes and videos! I have made laundry soap for years, but I am going to try your recipe. And, girl! We have the same brass and milk glass antique 1940's lamp over our dining room tables!! I was so excited when I noticed it in the background! Ours came from my in-laws cabin in the mountains of Utah. They didn't want it and GA e it to me since I adore everything vintage and amtique.
I love those lamps. We got it from a small store in Tennessee and had to rehab it. Eventually I want them in each room. So glad you shared this with me.
we bought a new washer a few years ago. when we got to Lowes the first thing happen the guy tried to show me front loaders . I stopped him dead sentence. Let's not waste my time or yours . I don't want a front loader I do not want a washer without an agitator and he didn't know what that was LOL I told him oh I didn't know that was called agitator.( i guess no one ask for them ) They had three models at the time. with all that being said I HATE MY WASHER. it does have a place for bleach and fabric softener. But it never fills up more than half full. makes me feel like my bed linen isn't getting clean. I don't put my clothes in washer first I always fill the washer first then add my clothes. why do they have to mess with things. if it works why try to change or fix it. ugh!
I have the same problem with my washer. There is a setting for Bedding that fills the entire tub. I use that setting and then change the wash speed, etc. to the settings I want. I hope this helps you.
I get the kids from Amazon amzn.to/4cNmSv5 or Azure Standard. The buckets I get at Home Depot, Walmart or sometimes the local bakery gives them away from their frosting

Thanks! I try to find the humor in everything. Life is boring without it
Hi there! Just wanted to come back to this video to say thanks for this laundry soap recipe! I made a smaller batch to try right afterwards and I've been using it since. I absolutely love it!
Wonderful! Im so glad. 😃
Thank you ❤ I was going to make liquid but I think I like this better.
I use pinesol , leaves clothes smelling fresh , gets grease out, and also the eco eggs work great. Also the plant based eco wash is good one too 👍🏼
Better to use Essential oils instead of pinesol, since it is all chemicals
I’ve been making my own soap now for about two years now. It’s a liquid version. Dr. Bonners, baking soda, kosher salt, hot water, and essential oil if you want. I love it.
I’d love to try it!!!
I tried liquid and powder soap recipes in the past but I was never satisfied with the cleaning power. There were always stains that were just not coming out … how is your soap??
@@keinohrtini I've been satisfied.
@@ninagerulski8832 could you please share your recipe
@@ninagerulski8832 do you have ingredient amounts? My front loader cleans well. It doesn’t like powdered soap so I use liquid.
I make my own laundry soap too! Its fun
Heather xo
Would love the recipe, please!
@@katieolson3353 I give all the credit to where I got the recipe from - Heather @Kneady Homesteader. Here's the direct link to the video & the recipe! She's a Michigander & her videos are great! :) th-cam.com/video/eCNrtbaOxig/w-d-xo.html
I use Zote.. and it works amazing
Washing soda is sodium carbonate. By cooking sodium bicarbonate ( baking soda) be careful... afterwards, washing soda ( sodium carbonate) can be harsh on the hands and skin in its pure form.
I make a liquid version of this recipe. Love it! ❤❤❤
Hi, would you mind sharing this recipe? I want a liquid version. thank you in advance!
I have made laundry detergent like you, except, I've never baking soda with the washing soda. Gonna try adding it now.
I forgot to link it. Duh!!! th-cam.com/video/ncbdmAfpZ7I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QRBa1wYy3FK-c9-e
Yay! I have senstive skin too! I hope to do it.
Thank you!
Thank you 🙏🏻 ❤
beautiful oven ❤
Thank you 😋
Great ,thank you, love the things you show😍
You can add vinegar or epsom salt for softener instead of Downy softener(full of chemicals).
My goto spot cleaner is a spray bottle filled with cleaning vinegar and a squirt of Dawn blue. Give it a shake and spray on spots. Works FANTASTIC!
On the clothes is how I use it. Thanks for being here!
Thx for showing alternative to fels naphtha. I tried making it with that and I couldn't even go into my laundry room bc the smell of the bar of soap sitting there was so potent!!
Wish I had space to store another big bucket…. I’d make your soap! Very similar to what I made back in the day.
You can reduce it to 1/3 pretty easily.
I would not recommend homemade laundry detergent unless you have a standard, high water usage washer. In contrast, HE washers depend on detergent with enzymes for stain removal.
We always use the deep fill to ensure this isn’t an issue. Thanks for sharing this as well.
For those that receive ebt food stamps benefits, you can get the baking soda with your ebt as well!
Good point!
I also have an HE washer. I found if you use the soak button you get more water . after grating the bar soap run it through a food process with some of the baking soda to make it finer
Great ideas!
I live with someone who can't have chemicals or scent, so I only use a small scoop of baking soda. Sometime with a splash of vinegar.
The 3 bars of Kirk’s is $12.53. Great video.
It was half of that last month. Amazon is less now so I did add that link too.
I bought some last week by Walmart it was under $5.00 in central florida.
4bars at Walmart for $4.97
I make a stain bar for clothes that can be made with tallow or palm oil. The recipe makes 25 bars so you don’t need to use Castile. I sell them for $5. But it doesn’t not cost me that to make. Very simple recipe
I will be working on tallow soon! I’ll have to look into this!
If you want the recipe I could send it to you. No scent cheaper than you are using
I'm making it.
I also add Boarx to mine as well
Thanks
Your next washing machine should be a Speed Queen. I❤mine. Expensive, but worth every penny. You'll thank me later😂. Glad i found your channel. Your awesome.
New sub- love your content and will be binge watching soon . Enjoy others with good wisdom- thx
Thanks and welcome
I absolutely love your channel! Thank you so much for your recipes. And I love that you're real.
Thank you so much!
Love your videos! Where is your glass bowl from? Thank you!
The one with the handle? It’s actually an antique I got from a ln estate sale years ago. Its anchor hocking and I’m sure they make something sinilar. Its an 8 cup measuring cup.
Thank you so much!!!
When I make laundry soap, I like to finely grate the bar soap. Zote comes in a white or pink bar.
Petroleum det is so awful for us 😕
I hear ya tho, I need to get my clothes clean.
Not if you use white vinegar as a fabric softener. It rinses it out and also cleans your washing machine of residue.
Wouldnt let me comment, now doing so! Azure sells washing soda (aka sodium carbonata, aka soda ash). It is $13 for 5# (smallest amount available).
Amana or roper is the best washing machine
I'd like to put my tumble washer on FB Marketplace but my hubby wants to wait until we need another washer. I say we need another washer NOW. Selling my tumbler washer could help pay for a agitator washer.
I’m with you. Sometimes if think of sabotage so I can get a new one.
This is so interesting!! I want to make this to use. Thank you for sharing!
Hello. I came across your videos and love the info. Any suggestions for baking soda substitutions as I also have extremely sensitive skin and can't tolerate baking soda.
I’m with you!!! I usually am for deodorants and stuff but I’m okay with this. Maybe try a small batch and see
Please be careful.
Thanks for sharing this!
A CUP of store bought det?? Not liquid, surely
I think even powder laundry det would be maybe 1/2 cup
Some skin can’t tolerate det too so ppl make their soaps
We don’t even use soap to shower or wash face.
No clue.
We use a cement mixer that attaches to his drill it mixes it so great
Does this detergent get stains out good? I'd hate to make all this and it not work good! Thanks 😊
It does for dirt stuff but butter, oil type things it doesn’t.
Does the Kirk’s Castile soap dissolve well in cold water?
I suggest warm or hot
May sound like dumb question but gonna ask anyway…. How well does it dissolve in cold water?
I use hot water and the deep fill on the water to make sure it has room to love and heat to rinse it well.
I use goats milk soap for mine. The white film is real though.
I’ll have to reach out to a repair guy I know but I’ve not had an issue so far.
Living on a Dime channel has a good friend repairman
She just uses tiny amts in washer & DW of store dets
Like 1T DW powder in the cup u close & none in prewash.
I’m doing it now in the DW n seems to work just fine. I figure a $5 box (WM brand) should last me about 14 yrs LOL I use white vinegar in the rinse dispenser.
What is that goop/lanolin based hand cleaner you were talking about to remove oil stains?
Here you go amzn.to/4gcsLVy

Hi Ali, me again....one more question...does this work in cold water???
Hi! It can work on cold but it is much better on hot or warm and deep fill if you have an HE washer.
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa ty
My son and daughter-in-law, have one without an agitator in it, and I hate it 😂
Hate isn’t a strong enough word!!!! 😂
Ed )
Are you going to leave this as a powder or add water and make it a liquid?
You can dilute it in water. 1 cup water for 1/4 cup mix. Mix it really well and give it a shake before you use it.
I use a face mask when I mix too.
How many large loads would this cover? It says for a year supply, but I have 4 kids, one on the way, a mechanic husband, a dog, and we foster cats.... So I typically go through 2 large loads a day.. curious if this would come close to covering that? Or should I double up?
I do a large load and use the 1/4 cup still. Just make sure the load isn’t so full that it cannot move around to disperse
Does this break down in cold water or do you maybe have a liquid soap recipe
I’m working on a liquid soap now. If the load is small cold is okay but I’ve had better luck with hot.
Does this Laundry Detergent work in H.E. Washers?
If you use hot water and the extra deep fill it does.
I would love to find out how you purchased the "lid" for your bucket. What food processor did you use on your soap, will anyone work?
Amazon for the lid. Link is in the description. I have a KitchenAid and it isn’t my fav but it does the job.
Azure sells gamma lids.
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa Thank you, I just listened to your video regarding the gamma lids.
Great idea.
Is there a way to make this into a liquid detergent?
I mix it as needed with 1 cup of hot water. You can do enough for a few weeks at a time and give it a shake before you use it
Can you wash a load in cold water with this?
I suggest hot to help it break down. If you do a really small load cold is okay.
Does this hurt your washing machine?
I use hot water and the deep fill cycle and haven't had an issue.
💗
Probably a dumb question but I’m going to ask anyway because you never know….can I use about to expire baking soda??
I would!!!
how come you don't use Borax? I'm just curious. So many other recipes use that as well
My skin gets itchy from it .
@LittleHillHomesteadGa makes sense. Thank you!
we bought a new washer a few years ago. when we got to Lowes the first thing happen the guy tried to show me front loaders .
@@vickyCA1643 thank you I will go look for that
Do you put this directly on the clothes? I don't see how the shredded castile soap would get through through the compartments?
Yes, it melts fast since it’s shredded pretty fine.
Does it melt even with a cold water wash?
Where do you find the bucket and lid?
I get the kids from Amazon amzn.to/4cNmSv5 or Azure Standard. The buckets I get at Home Depot, Walmart or sometimes the local bakery gives them away from their frosting
Is there a place where the measurements are written out? Thank you!
In the description below the video
