  • Low plasma 25(OH) vitamin D level is associated with increased risk of COVID‐19 infection: an Israeli population‐based study (Federation of European Biochemical Societies Journal)
    febs.onlinelib...
Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide pandemic
To evaluate associations of plasma 25(OH)D levels with the likelihood of coronavirus disease infection and hospitalization
    N = 7, 807
    February 1st to April 30th, 2020
Participants had one previous blood test for the plasma 25(OH)D level
Suboptimal’ or ‘low’ plasma 25(OH)D. Below 30 ng/mL
    Sufficiency more than 30 ng/ml. (75 nmol/L)
    Insufficiency, 20 - 29 ng/ml
    Deficiency less than 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/L)
    7, 807 individuals
Risk by age and sex were as expected
Obesity not significantly associated with increased risk for COVID‐19 infection or hospitalization
    Sufficient vitamin D levels
    7, 025 tested negative
    Low vitamin D levels
    782 tested positive
    Increased likelihood of COVID‐19 infection
    Odds ratio (OR) of 1.45
    Increased likelihood of hospitalisation
    OR of 1.95
We concluded that low plasma 25(OH)D levels appear to be an independent risk factor for COVID‐19 infection and hospitalization.

    52, 405 infected patients
    524, 050 controls
Greater incidence of COVID-19 with lower vitamin D levels
Highest infection prevalence with lowest vitamin D levels
A significant protective effect in those who had supplemented over the previous 4 months

Vitamin-D and COVID-19: do deficient risk a poorer outcome? (Lancet)
    www.thelancet....
Comparing data across nations, mortality from COVID-19 is clearly higher in some countries than in others
Relative vitamin D status of populations
Vitamin D supplementation could be especially important for older people
    Functions
    Calcium and phosphate balance
    Affecting bone growth and turnover
    Low vitamin D status
Associated with increased susceptibility to infectious disease
    Notably, upper respiratory tract infections
Treating the lowest levels gives most percentage benefit
    Vitamin D and COVID-19
Virus emerged and started its spread in the northern hemisphere at the end of 2019
When levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D are lowest
COVID-19 mortality was significantly associated with vitamin D status in different populations
Nordic countries, widespread fortification of foods
Italy and Spain, prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, surprisingly common
    Black and minority ethnic people
UK, more than four times more likely to die from COVID-19
    In COVID
Vitamin D supports production of antimicrobial peptides in the respiratory epithelium
Might help to reduce the inflammatory response
Vitamin D is known to interact angiotensin- converting enzyme 2
SARS-CoV-2 down regulates expression of ACE2
Vitamin D promotes expression of this gene
    Rose Anne Kenny
    Trinity College Dublin
Lead investigator of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing
The circumstantial evidence is very strong
we don’t have randomised controlled trial evidence, but how long do you want to wait in the context of such a crisis?
We know vitamin D is important for musculoskeletal function, so people should be taking it anyway
Vitamin D supplements should normally be given to care home residents unless there is an extremely good reason not to do so.
    Adrian Martineau
    Queen Mary University of London
At best vitamin D deficiency will only be one of many factors involved in determining outcome of COVID-19
but it’s a problem that could be corrected safely and cheaply
there is no downside to speak of, and good reason to think there might be a benefit
    Vitamin D dose
    IU mcg
    400 10mcg
    800 20mcg
    1,000 25mcg
    2,000 50mcg

It takes a lot of money to run these studies, even with just analyzing at records! Doc Campbell is a regular guy, not a millionaire or system.
What these studies are still resisting is the group 30 - 40ng/ml, where I have read that deaths don't occur! That is my goal/sweetspot!

@Pretty Boy Which completely explains why your skin is such a beautiful deep black . . .
But luckily it isn't! Vitamin D deficiency killed so many who left our ☀sunniest☀ African homeland, that it only allowed the palest over very many generations to thrive.
Newest, beautiful deepest black skinned migrants to high sunless lats are being killed today by Covid, BUT COULD CHEAPLY SAVE THEMSELVES WITH THIS SUPPLEMENT (100,000IU Single Bolus dose today/protection day after tomorrow to bypass your far too excellent Melanin SUN-BLOCK!)
Our palest Nordics completely recognize D's critical immune importance, and heavily dose many foods, while sunny Italia & España don't, but suffer much more from deadly viral pandemics!
I'll take my Vitamin💊D which for 3 years (without any vaccines!) has completely prevented all respiratory disease😘
Cuz of high BMI & particular medication, decided to safely double 5,000IU prescription to 10,000IU, but have scheduled a blood test, hoping to be just above the 40ng/ml (100nmol/L) pneumonia-preventing level. Will also start Vitamin K to prevent all long-term risk of calcification so I can maintain without worry. (Check your coagulation prescriptions as some interact dangerously with Vitamin K!)
Fat not only stores Vit D, it also breaks it down before it can benefit, so us heavier folk need much more maintenance, not just at first. Dieting is far slower than Covid so higher supplement now, then reduce dosage as fat is burned off with diet change and increased exercise. Blood tests help management.
Correlation studies have shown Vitamin D insufficiencies go up as BMI increases, but sadly not that it works as a diet pill, but they ignore levels over 30ng/ml, so I will unscientifically hope that it helps anyway.

I started taking 2000 ui a day in march when EU started the lockdowns. Since april i started taking 4000 ui a day, which is the upper safe limit for adults. I am 32 years old. Last time i checked for vit D levels in my blood was maybe in 2018 i think, i had below 20 ng/ml. In july this year, so after taking march 2000 ui a day and april may and june taking 4000 ui a day, i retested my vit D and i had 52.3 ng/ml. I have to say that i am a doctor and i spend most time indoors as work. During lockdown which here in Romania was about 2 and a half months, i did spend time outdoors, but not too much. So after july test, i kept taking my 4000 a day, and retested a week ago, and i have 53.7. I honestly expected to have more, but i think i will be taking 4000 ui a day still, maybe gte my levels to 60 or 70.
And i also lost 12 kg during lockdown, from 88 to 76 kg, which i believe also helped boost my vit d levels since much of it is stored in fat cells.
Thanks for the videos, i watch them every day and i must say that i also had a feeling for vit d since i started reading about it since march.

The solution to the Virus is simple: 50 mg of Vitamin C per kilo of body weight spread out over the day; 10,000 IU of D3 and 50 mg of zinc. 120+ days without a mask. I contracted Covid-19 in June and had it for 12 days. Had low grade fever, mild cough, loss of taste for 4 days, and rapid heart rate. My levels of vitamin D about two weeks before I contracted the virus was 42ng/mL. I recovered well with no negative lasting effects. I am 55 years of age and a certified health coach so I was taking all natural supplementation before and during the course of the virus. I am very fit, exercise daily, never smoked, don't drink alcohol, and no underlying medical conditions. I am also A+ blood type which supposedly is a higher risk for severe cases.

COVID-19, Diabetes and Vitamin D deficiency.
Vitamin D Insufficiency in ICU patients less than 75 years old 100.0% !!
      Vitamin D deficiency < 20 ng/ml 98,9% patients died, 1.1% recovered.
      Vitamin D sufficient level > 30 ng/ml 4,1% died, 95,9% alive or recovered
These are some figures from studies about COVID-19 and Vitamin D
COVID-19 is only the top of a much bigger global pandemic.
More than 1 billion people are obese or have Diabetes.
More than 1 billion people have vitamin D deficiency.
Both groups have the highest risk to die from COVID-19
      A sufficient vitamin D level > 30 ng/ml is the best prevention
as we can see in many clinical studies worldwide.
Blood tests for Vitamin D levels & COVID-19 might be helpful,
especially in care homes, for sick people with darker skin,
immune disorder and everybody who is already infected,
who does not get enough sunlight to produce sufficient Vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D plays a significant role in the regulation of calcium and maintenance of phosphorus levels in the blood. These factors are vital for maintaining healthy bones. People need vitamin D to allow the intestines to stimulate and absorb calcium and reclaim calcium that the kidneys would otherwise excrete.👍

So, I get the vitamin D routine, we've been at it for years. However, Dr Campbell keeps saying a significant difference in those who had supplemented over the previous 4 'weeks', while his paper says 'months'. So, does it take a body 4 weeks or 4 months to rally. My guess is 4 weeks. Appreciate everything you do, and I'm glad that you are continuing to do it.

I’m glad I come across your channel. Thanks to you I’ve been supplementing vitamin d3 1000-2000 per day plus somewhat sufficient sun exposure given it’s been summer. I’m trying to push my mom to take it as she’s not super far from the high risk age group (65+) Thankfully she’s been in the sun a lot this summer, but she is a teacher, which means being indoors. I’ve been trying to get her to supplement to maintain. Especially her likely hood of possibly getting exposed.

It's a bit annoying to me that the media is not clearly explaining what the 'high risk' group is with respect to age and sex. The most likely person to contract Covid is a 55-year old male. Your mother is NOT at high risk - this is clear from the data displayed on the CDC website (USA) or the health bureau statistics for virtually any other country. I am a 70-year old female and my risk is MUCH lower than my 55-year old male cousin's. The 'old age' risk is only definitively true for people over 80-years. Still, good for everyone to take Vit D !!

The last people in their families that had it hard were their grandparents. So now being spoilt (brats if you like) they just do what they want to and don't care about anybody else. Tada my theory. Countries that rule with a iron fist seem to have done a lot better than the rest of the 'free' world. Ah well I'm a watchmaker what do I know! I have made clocks but no watches. When my favourite watch is a 1967 Seiko that cost me 35 quid what's the point in spending 2 years making one that won't likely be as good. I could make one is the answer but I have no desire to actually make one. If you want to make a good little earner just buy and sell watches and get some other mug like me to repair them for you. If you look at the government guidelines in the UK, it's recommennded that old people in care homes in the UK should receive vitamin D supplements. But it's a miserable small amount and it's to try and prevent osteoporosis and hip fractures.
Old people in homes should be getting at least 10,000 IU a week supplements before winter sets in, or many more will die.

For years I have been teaching young doctors as preparation for their Medical Boards going into residency how important Vit D and Vit C affects health and mortality although the evidence has been sporadic it needs to be backed up with studies as you have been pushing. Thank you Dr. John. As always, a brilliant explanation and analysis. Oddly enough, I never hear any talk of Vitamin D on the U.S. stations when discussing COVID-19. Since the U.S. has consistently mentioned the higher impact of COVID-19 on the Black community and the Latinx community, one would think they would bring this up. I'm a U.S. citizen that has been living in Mexico for several years, and we have a relatively high mortality rate here as well. That is partly due to the culture of waiting until it's too late for adequate care and also due to our high levels of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. But I also suspect it is due to the Vitamin D deficiency due to the preponderance of darker skin tones here. Hopefully as you have suggested, a randomized blind control study will be finally conducted. Thank you again.

I would like to stress to people, be careful with giving supplements to babies. My wife and I have been giving a vitamin D supplement to our one year since she was 5 months old. We have been struggling with her being constipated without a clear cause since she started on solids (also at 5 weeks). After reading a terrible story about a poor woman here (Copenhagen) who has poisoned her baby mis miss dosing her with Vit D, and finding that some of the symptoms was constipation. We stopped our dosing and managed to arrange a blood test, as soon as we stopped her constipation eased. The blood test returned that her vit D levels were too high and we have been advised that cessation was the correct thing to do (in our case). Important to note that our daughter is very fair skinned, and summer light levels here are very high, we will restart supplements later in the autumn, but I just wanted to offer some advise that with babies, always use precaution.

Unfortunately most doctors don't know the importance of vitamins. They're trained in medical school to only treat the symptoms of illness with big pharma's drugs, and not prevent or cure anything with vitamins. I cured my high blood pressure problems years ago with zinc. I had an elevated free copper that was depleting my zinc. I took high doses of zinc 3 times per day for over a year to lower the free copper, and still take 100 mg per day. A low zinc interferes with the way the kidneys get rid of sodium and causes high blood pressure. Zinc is also needed for urea cycle enzymes that convert ammonia to urea. When zinc gets low, the ammonia gets high, and the blood pressure rises. If you think about it, there's millions of people in this world that have the same thing causing their blood pressure elevation, but since the doctors are not trained to know how the body actually operates, they just put them on big pharma's blood pressure pills and treat the symptoms. They're never cured of their problem, and make their monthly payments to big pharma when they buy their monthly blood pressure pills. If a researcher comes along and finds out what's causing the problem and how to cure it, big pharma shuts them down. As you probably know, the FDA doesn't allow anyone to write books saying vitamins cure anything. The supplement companies are also not allowed to make claims of cures. As you know, big pharma is behind this, because if people are cured, they lose billions on things like blood pressure meds. It's definitely a corrupt medical system, and it's no wonder most US doctors are not curing anybody. I cured a severe case of Covid with Ivermectin worm medicine in 4 days, but if you tell most doctors this, they'll probably roll their eyes or laugh at you. Anyway, thanks for the information about K-2, I did not know that it was needed for vit. D absorption. Like the old saying goes, you learn something new everyday.

Hello my favorite youtube doc. I must tell that i believe you saved my life. Months ago you began telling us about vitamin D. So myself and my husband ( both of us half black) figured it couldnt hurt. So we took your advice. Im 47 years old, a smoker (for over 27 years) high bp and my husband is 35 also a smoker. Last week my daughter 22 caught covid from a friend and unfortunately passed it to me and my husband before showing any symptoms. I was very tired slightly uncomfortable for a day and a half. My husband has mild congestion he is beginning to clear up now. My daughter on the other hand very helathy and young is not better yet. She is now taking the vitamin D i have been asking her to take for months. Thank you sir for the information and facts you share. We are most grateful to you.

    The NOF report does state:
"Although recent epidemiologic (observational) studies have suggested associations between low 25(OH)-vitamin D concentrations and higher rates of COVID-19 infection, these are likely related to ethnicity, age, and general health rather than a causal relationship. To date, no clinical trials studying a potential effect of vitamin D supplementation on preventing COVID-19 disease have been completed."

Vitamin D3 supplements raise your 25-hydroxyD level in ng/ml to about 1/100 the dose per day in iu. For example, if you take 400 iu/day, that will raise your blood level by 4 ng/ml. If you take 1000 iu/day, that will raise your blood level by 10 ng/ml. If you depend on those supplements (like in the UK in winter) you would be horribly deficient at 10 ng/ml. If you take 1000 iu/day and drink a glass of fortified milk with another 400 iu, then your blood level would be 14 ng/ml: Again, horribly deficient.
And it's quite consistent at higher doses: I take about 8000 iu/day and my blood level is 70 ng/ml. (I'm a 100 kg man.) So if you want to be in the "safe zone" according to these papers, you would need 3000 iu/day every day. Sun exposure is great, if you can get it. Hawaiian life guards have about 70 ng/ml, like me. If you don't live in Hawaii or Florida, you should take 4000-5000 iu/day to get in the 40-50 ng/ml range the Endocrine Society recommends.

    • @guygrotke7476

If you're looking for an idea for a follow-up video, how about measuring the UV level using a meter and calculating the amount of VitD the skin produces under those conditions. Would be great if you could also measure the before and after VitD levels in the blood, in a number of volunteers covering different age groups, gender and ethnicity. You probably need to do a number of videos to cover the seasons. A tall order, but one that has the potential to benefit the nation and the world. I've tried measuring the UV levels when the sun is shining over the seasons and was surprised how low they are during winter compared to summer.

Because we are generally fair-skinned here we tend to soak up vitamin D when available, but our immigrant population struggles with low vitamin D levels because their skin was made for climates with a lot more sun than they get here.
