Matt Damon, Ben Affleck Praise the 'Fearlessness' of Jodie Comer in The Last Duel | Rotten Tomatoes

- Matt Damon and Ben Affleck know a thing or two about writing a good script (having won Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting), but it wasn't until Jodie Comer's fearless, early commitment to their latest project, The Last Duel (directed by Ridley Scott), that they could truly see this story coming to life. In our extended conversation, we spoke with Comer about what she wishes to truly know about Marguerite de Carrouges, the 14th century woman whose honor was fought over in France's final sanctioned duel. Co-writer Nicole Holofcener talks about finally exploring history not just through the eyes of men, but women of importance. Damon speaks on doing as many of his own stunts as possible in the titular fight against a "much younger" Adam Driver. Meanwhile, Affleck questions why Damon's name always comes first when people talk about their partnership.

Jodie needs at least a nomination for an Oscar, her performance was epic.
ly bad.
XD
Totally agreed mate👍👍
Disgusted she didn't get a nomination
Agreed. Excellent film. I don't understand why it never got the recognition it deserved.
In a perfect world Jodie Comer would get all the attention, recognition, and praises she deserves for her subtle, nuanced, poignant, utterly brilliant and beautiful performance in 'The Last Duel'. It's a crime how much she's been overlooked this award season.
Oh please. Such a woman perspective
I'm not a woman and 100% share that perspective.
When Matt Damon said “we’ll it was pre photography” haha
lol - yes by a couple hundred years - some of these interviewers are just so dumb
You can feel that Damon was embarrassed for her. Photographs of a 14th century woman.
What a Ding Bat
The interviewer, Nikkie Novak, replied to a similar comment below. She meant to say 'portrait'. Give her a break. Her other questions were quite intelligent.
@@maryvallettakeith6146 I was reacting to Matt Damon's smug reaction! No offence to Nikkie! 💕
Even in this interview, no disrespect to Matt and Ben, Jodie shines brighter!👍❤️
The best adaptation of a period piece ever created. It was Brutal. Feudalism was a system of systemic protection and unquestionable loyalty to nobles and clergy. Life literally depended on it. It was so real .
This film was so well done and thought out. I came in as just a devout Adam Driver fan seeing another one of his films, but I left loving him and all the other actors apart of it even more... everyone poured their hearts into this film and you can feel it. Everything was carefully scripted and acted and I love that. Wonderful work by all involved
You're a fan of .... actors? - you really are sick
@@Wally-pu2hh I’m not honestly sure what’s so “sick” about that, but OK. I guess it made you feel better to say something negative about me. That, to me, is very sad. But you took the time to type that, so it must bring you some satisfaction. It gives me satisfaction to type this response and wish you all the best regardless, because being brilliant to each other and showing kindness costs me nothing and makes me feel good. So take care!
@@Wally-pu2hh Being a fan of someone means appreciating their work. Being a devout fan means appreciating their work a lot. Okay? And btw: ever heard of that little word Netiquette?
I loved Jodie from the White Princess so to see her dress up in gowns, to a range of playing a psychopathic assassin is always mind boggling to me 😂
Everyone loves Jodie and I agree!!!!
I just burst out laughing at Was there even a photograph of her 😂😂😂 REALLY?? They composed themselves so well, great interview but that was brilliant! 😂
Omg, i had to pause bc I got second-hand embarassment from that. LOL
@@Esther-32013 same!! i dunno how they managed to control their faces!!
@@flood1019 Acting! 😂
Same
Unbelievable
Never been a great fan of Ben Affleck's acting, but I can see that he worked very hard at this role and put himself in a very different position as an actor. LOVED IT. And then came the Tender Bar. Just continued to impress in terms of his acting chops.
I saw the movie at Cinemark Fri night & it is a 5 star movie ! I see Oscar worthy ...Matt Damon was Amazing actor as was Jody & Ben ! The theatre audience was very reactive
Adam Driver was excellent
@@Chimpangel thank you ! I didn't realize after your reply I left him out ...
One thing I learned from The Last Duel besides it being a fantastic film is that Ben Affleck does not look good as a blonde.
They made him weird though, i.e. no eyebrows.
I actually think he looks character/period accurate. It's not about modern style.
Jodie Comer, love her sfm ♥ Clearly on the right track to win more n more awards 😍 I really liked The Last Duel novel by Eric Jager so I'm hoping this film will do justice for it! Gonna watch it tmrw, can't wait!
In a time when there are so so many mind numbing films full of poor writing topped with thoughtless acting, this will prove to be a true epic. Very well done!
Jodie was Amazing!!! Love History and this Story!
This movie is awesome, the acting is superb, the action is visceral and raw 👏 👌 👍
I honestly don't understand why this movie tanked. Watched it today and think it is amazing.
Most movie-goers nowadays are brain dead...
I stumbled upon this movie last month and watched out of boredom and It was much better than I thought it would be
hands down - this was the best movie of 2021
Ben affleck seems so intelligent and professional in this press tour. I hope he’s doing good, this performance/film was so dope!
Love 💘 the movie. The studio should premiere in September. In the end the audience applaud 👏. Oscar worthy.
Jodie was excellent as Elizabeth of York in the White Princess.
If she isn't careful, she will be a medieval lady/princess/ queen forever.
There’s no danger of that. Some of her most compelling work is in the series Killing Eve which is a complete 180° from this period world.
To me she is also a psychotic 2020s serial killer!! :)
I prefer to watch killing eve for 3000x than watching Jodie in the white princess.
So fascinating hearing these insights into the filmmaking/acting process from the pros.
I legit laughed out loud when the interviewer said there wasn't even a surviving photograph of the character.
Jodie is very talented, great film.
I just finished watching it in theaters it was incredible
I hope Jodie Comer not only gets nominated for an Oscar but wins one, she was so believable in her role, it was done so well 👏 Brovo Jodie.
This film was epic
Why isn't there a photography of Marguerite de Carrouges? Well, obviously the poor thing was treated so unfairly they didn't allow her even to own an iPhone, couldn't take a single selfie in her life.
How dare they.
the gurl can ACT
This movie was so genuinely awesome, well written, and acted.
I was screeeammming at the screen during this movie. And the duel?! Whew, it was so riveting.
What a TEAM!! Edit: Just watched it again (month later). Still amazed to see two of my all time favorite actors and the stellar Jodie C in one movie. A real treat! I chuckled, because my mind played a trick on me. Matt said something like "And so Ridley had the idea...", from which my mind created "Sir Ridley had the idea..."
The movie is nothing short of amazing, but certainly no light entertainment, and I only really began to appreciate it after watching it a second time which, I have to admit, I might not have done if Matt, Ben and Jodie hadn't been in it. I suppose this movie will go down as a classic, nominations or not.
Excelent, excelent film!!
The costumes, the hairs styles, and storytelling, the
acting, the direction, everything. Love everything about this piece of art. To tell the story of the lady from her point of view is remarcable and appreciated. Bravo all!!!
3:59 "I don't even know if there was a photograph of her anywhere."
The utterance collectively lowered our IQ.
Photography wasn't invented until 1826 when Nicéphore Niépce photographed his "View from the Window at Le Gras", 440 years after the duel of this film takes place, with the first portrait being a self portrait of Robert Cornelius in 1839, 453 years after the duel.
I genuinely thought this was common knowledge? I've had that photo imprinted in my brain since I was a kid, I'm 24 now, if not the exact date then surely people know it was around the 1800s
@@71hammyman I thought it was common knowledge as well but apparently not for this woman.
@@HungryTacoBoy I think she meant portrait
@@accountnotfound4209 That's a more understandable mix-up.
I'm sure she just made a mistake
Fantastic movie. So far, the best of 2021. Go watch it.
It is a film that sticks with you.. Very moving, still thinking about it. Well done
Pretty good for Ridley's first movie.
The way Ben went to help Matt when he was getting beaten up is what Bruce Wayne would have done
Ben Solo
Where is Adam driver???? I haven’t seen an interview with him for this film
He might be busy doing the interviews for the house of Gucci
Affleck really does love to hear himself speak.
Watched it today, wow it told a compelling story
In my top 3 for 2021 for sure
Well written movie!
Movie of the year for me
Great movie!!! Everyone is valuable, managing that is the hard part!!💯💯🙏🏽🙏🏽
If Netflix were probably to adapt "Berserk", Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer would probably be perfect fits for voicing Guts, Griffith and Casca, respectively.
Dasha was super cold in this pic.
GREAT movie
She is amazing
4:00 -- A "photo" of her!? In the early 1300s? Cameras weren't invented for another 500 years, haha.
Where is Adam Driver?
There's something off about these interview questions and I can't quite put my finger on it ...
Yeah. They're lame
maybe the numbskull asking them has something to do with it
The Last Duel was a fun going amazing movie and a damn good watch
brilliant film
Not a perfect film, but well worth seeing, y'all.
Great movie!!!!
Love the energy
Love the movie,,, I think Ben loves to steal all the Questions and gives really long answers,, but it’s cool,, he is the luckiest actor in Hollywood…
Photograph of her in medieval Europe? lmao
Awesome movie
Great movie based on a true story and very well made, but unfortunately, it didn't do well at the box-office because movie-goers nowadays prefer superhero-trash where thinking isn't required, even discouraged. I will watch it again.
To put so much into a film, to work so hard (and it shows), and for the box office to not reflect that... I would've gone to the theatre to see this movie if it weren't for the Pandemic...so unfair. I know--Life isn't fair. But that doesn't make it right
Seems like Adam Driver never does press junkets
He’s just awkward in person.
@@Special_Agent_NSB He may also have it in his contract. That’s what I’d do
It think it’s also because he is doing the house of Gucci at the same time
Fear, seriously, Fear. Call anyone, devil in blue.
And where is Adam driver ??
"Get woketh go broketh" - knight parsival
It's unfortunate this film isn't doing better at the box office. It's no masterpiece, but it's an enjoyable and entertaining film to watch. However, I know Matt Damon and Ben Affleck co-wrote the screenplay, but they should not have been cast in this film.
Because of covid .and the season
I think they both did a great job. Damon is particular really disappeared into the role.
I think it's hard-going at a time when people want happy movies and escapism and nostalgia for better times, not the 14th century when it sucked to be alive!
Damon and Affleck are OK actors, but as you say, they really don't suit the genre.
@@Elliecatify says you and him and only you and him.
Easy on the arm gestures Ben
Yarmouth! Is Ben saying?
It’s like Matt and Ben decided to let women take the limelight after they delved into how they felt about Weinstein.
Matt Damon looks like Kathy Bates as the bearded woman in this woman. This was the biggest piece of $hit I've ever seen.
Ben sounded drunk. Jodie is really taking Hollywood by storm.
Him and Casey just talk that way.
There was no photograph of her! How ignorant are these people, get better hosts

Woke B.S... JUST ENJOY THE MOVIE.
Jodie Comer has nice legs, doesn't she? Since they were prominently on display, I thought it would be rude not to mention them.
Totally unnecessary
Ben's crotch is also prominently on display. Care to comment on that too? Nah, didn't think so. 🙄
She was a liar so I guess it does match the "me too" movement.
It stays unresolved for a reason. The point of the movie is not that she lied or did not lie. It is to show that people experience and see the same situations in very different lights.
I think it was pretty clear she was telling the truth…
@@taylorv9661 clear like mud. If she was so sure maybe she should of fought in the duel for her honor.
@@iirovaltonen4258 what? Clearly that’s not the point of the movie. It clearly wants to show how women have been mistreated the whole history, in this case, in the medieval times, and how needed feminism was and is.

Oh dear God save me from wokism and its march through modern movie scripts. I would rather stick pins into my eye-balls than listen to this gush-fest in which two leading men must kneel before their middling female collaborators in a film that destroys all its male characters and hero-worships the one woman.
"young women are people" if there is one thing I am taking out of this interview it's that.
