One thing you don't do at the beginning that would probably be helpful. once the timer hits 21 seconds, fire a Radar arrow Straight up while standing near there door. Now back up to your spot of choice while continually firing fully charged arrows straight up. They take ~18 seconds to come down. By the time the round starts, your Radar arrow will hit, you'll have another one ready with no CD, and the next 18 seconds arrows will be raining from the sky on the enemy team.
I mean, I didn't, but even if I had, what's the problem with that? I'm just providing tips to people. muselk is fantastic, and I've really enjoyed his videos, but I didn't even find him until after this.
If only I had watched more of your guides during the open beta, man, I could've gained so much more from the other characters I liked but couldn't play well.
Other things I would recommend (mostly obvious, but it's shit I've learnt from others): - you can right click or press E/shift again to cancel/sheathe that particular drawn arrow - ult is global, travels through walls but is easy to dodge; consider using when they can't dodge it (at objectives, through a wall, at bastion), or when you want enemies to move out of the way - consider not charging up arrows if you're in danger; run to safety whilst shooting uncharged shots. charging slows you - sensor is really good for spotting flankers as well as shooting pre much straight ahead - sensor can attach to enemies and deals damage of normal arrow - ult doesn't spawn dragons instantly, avoid using at point blank

Does nobody realize that when you draw your bow back you can still change arrows? Like I can pull back a regular arrow, realize that I need a multi-arrow, press e and the arrow will just change without needing to reload.
Yeah, most Hanzo's I see just spam arrows because there's no real penalty for doing so. Can't tell you how many times I was running behind a Reinhardt or something and the enemy Hanzo just fired into a mass. Woops! Accidentally headshotted a McCree, haha *keeps spamming*
I know this is old-ish but you don't know how much this helped me. I guess I've been thinking of Hanzo as a typical sniper, pretty much like Widowmaker with a different kit, but once you said "support mid-range sniper" suddenly everything clicked into place. AND the tips on multi-arrow clarified a lot too. Thank you for this video!
If you hit someone with your sight arrow, I believe it does more damage, but I am not 100% on that. It's also nice to hit the tanks with your sight arrow, because it will keep sight on the front line.
Thanks for the multiarrow shot. Another useful tip is never us the ult into the group. Its long range going right into the ground takes a lot of its utility away. Reposition yourself onto ground level behind a wall and use it.
i learned 2 things about hanzo in this vid: his skill can oneshot squishy targets if you aim at the ground and you have to be somewhat close, the rest of the video was you talking about how much you love it, thanks for the small advice allthough i expected much more from a 7min vid
and what more else do you expect to learn for hanzo lol he said this arrow sees through walls, this kills them if you shoot the ground, that's his ult, his shot i delayed, he is mid range assassin and that's it
I commented on this a long time ago this really is a great guide. I started maining Hanzo after watching this and used to average 5-10 elims per game with any hero (Junkrat more obviously) and now I consistently get 20+ elims with consistent POTGS as Hanzo. And I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore gamer at all. This helped teach me how to think really efficiently with Hanzo and it makes the games a lot more fun than the haphazard way i was playing before...
Multy arrow is good for pesky Bastions who hug walls like it was their life line. Same thing with Reinhdearts if they got thir back to a wall srpead arrow is your friend.
The thing with Hanzo is that yes his damage output is amazing, but you need to be landing those arrows, otherwise he's no much stronger than any other character that can just spray bullets and hit the target easily. However if you have what it takes then he's very very rewarding. I've already lost count of the amount of outright kills I've gotten by landing a fully charged shot to the face. That deals 250 damage I believe, so will cleanly take out half the cast no question. Also I've honestly been jumped by a tank so many times but calmly used the ricochet arrows at their feet then fully charged a follow up arrow and killed them. Being able to hold your own against a tank without being a tank is nothing to be sniffed at. Hanzo mostly struggles with characters that are fast and or have erratic movements. I find Tracer hard to nail down, as well as Genji and Lucio. But again, one shot to the face and it's curtains for them. Hanzo is the type of character who can be broken if your skills are broken, or can suck if your skills just aren't there.
I loved Hanzo in the beta, but when I got the full game (4 days at the time of me writing this) I found myself struggling. So I realised its because I played him like I did in the beta, like a sniper. So this video really helps. I've watched a bunch so far and you've quickly become my favourite overwatch guide.
GREAT vid.... explains hanzo amazingly for people without the beta and shows perfectly how to synergize arrows and maximize hanzo. he is NOT a sniper and i love what you did in this vid.... subscribed just for this... keep up hard work
Tips I know: If you shoot a sensor arrow at a shield/barrier it can hit them after they drop it, the sensor will stick in enemy players moving with them. If you fire straight up it will take 18-20 seconds at full draw to come back down, can be used at enemy spawn with a Junkrat traps or to get two sonic arrows going at the start of the match. You do not need have a full draw to have the scattered arrows do full damage it is always 75 and the can bounce 3 times, and every one that hits gives you 6% ultimate charge. I find that the short crosshairs with the bloom turned off works much better than Hanzo's default reticule
I play Hanzo a lot, and I think I'm pretty good with him, and now he is somewhat harder to play because his hitbox on his arrow is a lot smaller, but now it's way more rewarding to get kills with him.
fun fact: reloading while you have an arrow drawn releases the tension in the bow without firing the arrow, just in case you loaded and drew back a scatter/sensor arrow but decided you didn't want to fire it.
Nice vid and explanation on where hanzo is supposed to be in the fight. Im trying to master hanzo now and im still slowly trying to master the dip in the arrows.
+spencer harding Not much to talk about, its a fire and forget ult. You find a group and you launch your dragons and rack up the kills. I guess he could of talk about not just firing it in random stops but still.
spencer harding The only other ult I see it working great with is Reinhardt or Zarya or a nicely placed Mei ult, I haven't come across any other combos....but yeah I guess talking about where to fire it and how to line it up would be worth talking about, but you kind of learn that as you play him.

I'm a huge fan of Hanzo. I definitely take my time more with my shots and I'm normally a bit further back. I think I'll take your reccomendation of moving forward with the team more so.
a mistake that a lot of other shooters do is use ammo, i dont mean clips those are obviously part of it, i mean a max ammo cap, i am glad to see hanzo has infinite ammo because it reduces stress on him, he seems a bit faster paced which already would make him harder, worrying about ammo and having to even die for more ammo: it helps to not have that thought there, good call on the overwatch team guys
I miss my huntsman days as Sniper in TF2. I'm pretty sure Hanzo would be a lot easier to play. There's a difference between players who spam arrows, and players who can time, and aim arrows accurately.
So I've been playing him wrong on my first few matches. I shouldn't try to be a long range sniper like Widow. I need to start playing him mid-range. Dude, your guides really help. Perhaps I should've figured this out by myself but hey, subbed.
Hanzo was the second hero i ever played and i beasted with him. Hes epic and a great place to start. Not too difficult to play and alot of fun when you get a few nice hits in :)
Felt I played Hanzo well in beta but there's lots of tips here I had no idea about (eg multi-arrow strats), so will look forward to applying them when the game comes out.
I like to think of Hanzo and use him, less as a sniper, and more like a carbine/rifle user of a traditional FPS. I think you vid exemplifies that strategy. Awesome
I've said this before and I'll say it again, what Hanzo needs is an ability to escape situation. Like the hunter class in World of Warcraft, Hanzo needs the "disengage" ability. When you're facing off with Roadhog and all your cooldowns are popped, you might as well sit back as you watch yourself getting killed. I realize that the key is not to get yourself in such situations as a sniper, but sometimes it's up to you to either push through or capture the point. It's frustrating. I'm fairy good with Hanzo but God forbid I get in an enclosed space with a freaking tank.
Any starirs and those kind of stuff will prevent from hitting the opponent like 70% of the times so it can be used only on the flat surfaces. Also I feel like the closer you aim at their feet, the better it works but closer doesn't mean right on their toes. So yeah, although it's a great ability and quite important, it's hard to do.
If you played TF2 and played as the sniper with The Huntsman (a bow) then you are already good as Hanzo. He was my first character I played as and everyone told me not to because he is one of the hardest to play, but after years of playing the Huntsman Sniper in TF2, I demolished the other team. You will have to make some adjustments for your aim because it is a different game with slightly different arrow physics but it's a quick fix
Maybe I'm late to the party, but I did want to throw in my two cents on Hanzo. So, I see you firing off a lot of ability arrows you've knocked, and it almost looks like you're doing it to "cancel" your charge and move faster. You can always hit the reload button to cancel a shot - moreover, if you want to save your ability for later, just hit the ability again without firing the shot and it will revert to a standard arrow. Even if the scatter arrow's cooldown is relatively short, it's always nice to have it available in case a Reaper or Tracer tries to catch you off guard.
I bloody love Hanzo. Even if you don't fully charge your arrow and get a headshot it's still an install kill and if you have a good trigger finger you can obliterate tanks at close range
To put it into words, he's the equivalent to a DMR class in traditional FPS game layout. Close enough but still enough range to disengage or not attract tons of attention. Mcree is the shorter/closer range half then Hanzo, then Widowmaker being farthest range.
i got alot of tips for hanzo (i main him and have played him 64 hours of 70 hours, theres alot of tips, no need to read all) if you found any of them useful, leave a like. 1) shoot the mei (when she is in the frost mode and heals) with a sonic arrow, it will drop of on her and if you are good, its a headshot (only do this if its overtime and she is on, fx the payload) and its also just fun to do 2) shoot a shield with a sonic arrow (rein or orisa) because they only shield when there's people behind the shield 3)don't go highground exept for scatter (if you are right above them like he is in 0:20 because it will be very hard to hit) 4) don't try to scatter the senata, he is floating 5) use the scatter on tanks that are trying to take you out, it will damage them 400 or so and then a headshot (which is easy since its a tank) will finish them off 6) one of the tips in the game is "other snipers is the greatest thread to you" sometimes, thats a lie. if you are a good hanzo, you can stand behind a wall and bunnyhop do this in diffrent places so the widow/hanzo/ana doesn't know where you will be next. 7) if you know someone is running after you (like in 0:47 ) shoot the scatter on the wall so it will hit them when they are charging, it will make them flee or damage/kill them so its easy to finish off 8) hanzo is good, both at attack and defense, but there is diffrent playstyles on him, find your's 9) a scatter on orisa can kill her, many knows this but this is for you who doesn't it 10) if you get damage boost from orisa ult or mercy, you can one hit a tracer and damage most of the enemy's DPS down to 20 (one hit for anyone else) i got more tips, but few reads all of those, who you who does, i am grateful because it took some time to type in :) HAVE A GREAT DAY! :D
yeah. snipers in this game are really important. its not like other games where it's usually a stubborn guy that wants to quick scope(me). The vision they give is so powerful.
One thing i've learned bout him is that he is mobile vertically meaning if your in a sticky situation, climb your way out, then ambush em with the scatter... Scatter arrow is your best friend :D
A Hanzo guide, in which the player doesnt know, that clicking M2 will release the arrow without shooting it (meaning no cooldown on scatter and vision arrow)? seems legit :)
Someone said that since he can climb walls, it's a good idea to try and sneak to ledges behind or to the side of your enemies, since he's more mid-range.

Watching this video about Hanzo made me remember the wonderful games I had in CoD 2 in a lot of maps that had rifles only. So you had this fast twitch, no sniper, mid-range gameplay. Do you think Hanzo will be similar to playing those games ? I think I was pretty good in those matches and some of my fondest FPS memories are linked to those rifle only nights.
the bad thing about Hanzo (as with any other archer, of any other game) is that you have to get the rythm going, and keep loosing them arrows everywhere on time. you have _the time between one arrow and the next_ to see the field, mark the most dangerous target, get your bearings, lead, aim, and shoot.... and of course, connect, because otherwise it's for nothing. IF you can master that, then you'll be a perfect Hanzo. but, probably his best ability outside that is that he can spot and mark enemies.... that, paired with some characters' abilities to fire indirectly or to ambush enemies, is insanely effective, because the enemy would never know what hit them. (same with Widowmaker, the difference being she's the one most effective for one-shotting enemies, and tracking is kind of her second thing) I know everyone would be like "omg! a samurai archer! he's awesome, he can one-shot everyone! he's hardcore!", no, no my dear trolls, that's not his reason to be... he's a tracker, not a sniper.
Funnily enough, people were telling me Hanzo was a pretty difficult hero to play, and said that Bastion was super easy and overpowered. I am horrendous as Bastion, yet I was really good with Hanzo from the jump. I find it easier to use a bow and arrow than a walking turret.
I started out playing as only Hanzo. Began playing with a team of friends, so I would fill roles (usually as a tank or support) Ended up getting the lone wolf skin out of a loot box last night. Back to only Hanzo.
Similar thing happened with me. One of my friends plays Reaper and I usually play Tracer, but I just recently unboxed the El Blanco skin for Reaper, so I started hogging the shit out of Reaper. No regrets.
what i do with the Detection Arrow Is I literaly Sometimes Stick it to an enemy and when they move I CAN SEE WHERE THEY ARE and if their team is close.. WHERE THEY ARE.
I noticed you don't jump around when charging normal arrows and you always take them to full charge. I've seen a lot of Hanzos who jump, hold the arrow to a medium charge and release. Is your strategy better?
I played Overwatch for the first time today at a friends. My first character was Genji and I died straight away. I then went Hanzo and scored 11 killed and no deaths (apart from being Genji) and getting the play of the game for the winning team! Hanzo is fantastic and easy to learn if you have a background in shooters. I play TF2 and the sniper's bow helps a lot with Hanzo but it is easier and harder at the same time. Good for people who have played fps before or people transitioning from TF2.
i dont have problems with tracer at a close range i actually struggle more vs genji in close range because he can double jump he is always above me he can deflect he can dash like tracer but once and it deals damage...
***** i know i use mostly maccree and hanzo but with hanzo i have problems vs jumping around genji i dont have problems with mccree i found out if you headshot him he uses deflect and then you have 5 more shots one shift and a flashbang to finish him there is no way you cant kill him after that :D but thx for the advice anyway :)
Nero Valentine It wasn't. And yes, I know the scarrows bounce off, so you don't want to shoot them directly at enemies. I just never knew that sensors would stick. Probably because the few times I stuck a sensor into an enemy, that enemy was squishy and died. What if you hit Reinhardt's shield?

Tips I know: If you shoot a sensor arrow at a shield/barrier it can hit them after they drop it, the sensor will stick in enemy players moving with them. If you fire straight up it will take 18-20 seconds at full draw to come back down, can be used at enemy spawn with a Junkrat traps or to get two sonic arrows going at the start of the match. You do not need have a full draw to have the scattered arrows do full damage it is always 75 and the can bounce 3 times, and every one that hits gives you 6% ultimate charge. I find that the short crosshairs with the bloom turned off works much better than Hanzo's default reticule
I play Hanzo a lot, and I think I'm pretty good with him, and now he is somewhat harder to play because his hitbox on his arrow is a lot smaller, but now it's way more rewarding to get kills with him.

fun fact: reloading while you have an arrow drawn releases the tension in the bow without firing the arrow, just in case you loaded and drew back a scatter/sensor arrow but decided you didn't want to fire it.
Just hit the ability button a second time to put the scatter or multi arrow back

spencer harding The only other ult I see it working great with is Reinhardt or Zarya or a nicely placed Mei ult, I haven't come across any other combos....but yeah I guess talking about where to fire it and how to line it up would be worth talking about, but you kind of learn that as you play him.

a mistake that a lot of other shooters do is use ammo, i dont mean clips those are obviously part of it, i mean a max ammo cap, i am glad to see hanzo has infinite ammo because it reduces stress on him, he seems a bit faster paced which already would make him harder, worrying about ammo and having to even die for more ammo: it helps to not have that thought there, good call on the overwatch team guys

I miss my huntsman days as Sniper in TF2. I'm pretty sure Hanzo would be a lot easier to play. There's a difference between players who spam arrows, and players who can time, and aim arrows accurately.

Hanzo was the second hero i ever played and i beasted with him. Hes epic and a great place to start. Not too difficult to play and alot of fun when you get a few nice hits in :)
Felt I played Hanzo well in beta but there's lots of tips here I had no idea about (eg multi-arrow strats), so will look forward to applying them when the game comes out.
I like to think of Hanzo and use him, less as a sniper, and more like a carbine/rifle user of a traditional FPS. I think you vid exemplifies that strategy. Awesome

I've said this before and I'll say it again, what Hanzo needs is an ability to escape situation. Like the hunter class in World of Warcraft, Hanzo needs the "disengage" ability. When you're facing off with Roadhog and all your cooldowns are popped, you might as well sit back as you watch yourself getting killed. I realize that the key is not to get yourself in such situations as a sniper, but sometimes it's up to you to either push through or capture the point. It's frustrating. I'm fairy good with Hanzo but God forbid I get in an enclosed space with a freaking tank.

Any starirs and those kind of stuff will prevent from hitting the opponent like 70% of the times so it can be used only on the flat surfaces. Also I feel like the closer you aim at their feet, the better it works but closer doesn't mean right on their toes. So yeah, although it's a great ability and quite important, it's hard to do.

If you played TF2 and played as the sniper with The Huntsman (a bow) then you are already good as Hanzo. He was my first character I played as and everyone told me not to because he is one of the hardest to play, but after years of playing the Huntsman Sniper in TF2, I demolished the other team. You will have to make some adjustments for your aim because it is a different game with slightly different arrow physics but it's a quick fix

Maybe I'm late to the party, but I did want to throw in my two cents on Hanzo. So, I see you firing off a lot of ability arrows you've knocked, and it almost looks like you're doing it to "cancel" your charge and move faster. You can always hit the reload button to cancel a shot - moreover, if you want to save your ability for later, just hit the ability again without firing the shot and it will revert to a standard arrow. Even if the scatter arrow's cooldown is relatively short, it's always nice to have it available in case a Reaper or Tracer tries to catch you off guard.

I bloody love Hanzo. Even if you don't fully charge your arrow and get a headshot it's still an install kill and if you have a good trigger finger you can obliterate tanks at close range
To put it into words, he's the equivalent to a DMR class in traditional FPS game layout. Close enough but still enough range to disengage or not attract tons of attention. Mcree is the shorter/closer range half then Hanzo, then Widowmaker being farthest range.

i got alot of tips for hanzo (i main him and have played him 64 hours of 70 hours, theres alot of tips, no need to read all) if you found any of them useful, leave a like.
1) shoot the mei (when she is in the frost mode and heals) with a sonic arrow, it will drop of on her and if you are good, its a headshot (only do this if its overtime and she is on, fx the payload) and its also just fun to do
2) shoot a shield with a sonic arrow (rein or orisa) because they only shield when there's people behind the shield
3)don't go highground exept for scatter (if you are right above them like he is in 0:20 because it will be very hard to hit)
4) don't try to scatter the senata, he is floating
5) use the scatter on tanks that are trying to take you out, it will damage them 400 or so and then a headshot (which is easy since its a tank) will finish them off
6) one of the tips in the game is "other snipers is the greatest thread to you" sometimes, thats a lie. if you are a good hanzo, you can stand behind a wall and bunnyhop do this in diffrent places so the widow/hanzo/ana doesn't know where you will be next.
7) if you know someone is running after you (like in 0:47 ) shoot the scatter on the wall so it will hit them when they are charging, it will make them flee or damage/kill them so its easy to finish off
8) hanzo is good, both at attack and defense, but there is diffrent playstyles on him, find your's
9) a scatter on orisa can kill her, many knows this but this is for you who doesn't it
10) if you get damage boost from orisa ult or mercy, you can one hit a tracer and damage most of the enemy's DPS down to 20 (one hit for anyone else)
i got more tips, but few reads all of those, who you who does, i am grateful because it took some time to type in :)

One thing i've learned bout him is that he is mobile vertically meaning if your in a sticky situation, climb your way out, then ambush em with the scatter... Scatter arrow is your best friend :D

Watching this video about Hanzo made me remember the wonderful games I had in CoD 2 in a lot of maps that had rifles only. So you had this fast twitch, no sniper, mid-range gameplay. Do you think Hanzo will be similar to playing those games ? I think I was pretty good in those matches and some of my fondest FPS memories are linked to those rifle only nights.

the bad thing about Hanzo (as with any other archer, of any other game) is that you have to get the rythm going, and keep loosing them arrows everywhere on time.
you have _the time between one arrow and the next_ to see the field, mark the most dangerous target, get your bearings, lead, aim, and shoot.... and of course, connect, because otherwise it's for nothing.
IF you can master that, then you'll be a perfect Hanzo.
but, probably his best ability outside that is that he can spot and mark enemies.... that, paired with some characters' abilities to fire indirectly or to ambush enemies, is insanely effective, because the enemy would never know what hit them. (same with Widowmaker, the difference being she's the one most effective for one-shotting enemies, and tracking is kind of her second thing)
I know everyone would be like "omg! a samurai archer! he's awesome, he can one-shot everyone! he's hardcore!", no, no my dear trolls, that's not his reason to be... he's a tracker, not a sniper.

i tested the multi arrow thing in training and holy NUGGETS it works.
Funnily enough, people were telling me Hanzo was a pretty difficult hero to play, and said that Bastion was super easy and overpowered. I am horrendous as Bastion, yet I was really good with Hanzo from the jump. I find it easier to use a bow and arrow than a walking turret.
I started out playing as only Hanzo. Began playing with a team of friends, so I would fill roles (usually as a tank or support) Ended up getting the lone wolf skin out of a loot box last night. Back to only Hanzo.
Similar thing happened with me. One of my friends plays Reaper and I usually play Tracer, but I just recently unboxed the El Blanco skin for Reaper, so I started hogging the shit out of Reaper.

what i do with the Detection Arrow Is I literaly Sometimes Stick it to an enemy and when they move I CAN SEE WHERE THEY ARE and if their team is close.. WHERE THEY ARE.
I honestly did not know about the multi arrow and i was trying to play Hanzo too up close.
I noticed you don't jump around when charging normal arrows and you always take them to full charge. I've seen a lot of Hanzos who jump, hold the arrow to a medium charge and release. Is your strategy better?

I played Overwatch for the first time today at a friends. My first character was Genji and I died straight away. I then went Hanzo and scored 11 killed and no deaths (apart from being Genji) and getting the play of the game for the winning team! Hanzo is fantastic and easy to learn if you have a background in shooters. I play TF2 and the sniper's bow helps a lot with Hanzo but it is easier and harder at the same time. Good for people who have played fps before or people transitioning from TF2.
A thing he forgot to mention is that with Hanzos wall run you can get up high making your arrows go further and making headshots easier

Tracer should be anti-hanzo consider how difficult for hanzo to shoot at close range.
That depends on the Hanzo player. Some are able to handle CQC really well.
i dont have problems with tracer at a close range i actually struggle more vs genji in close range because he can double jump he is always above me he can deflect he can dash like tracer but once and it deals damage...
SlendyDie Gaming Use mccree. if you can land a couple of shots on genji, forcing him to waste deflect, you can just flashbang to finish him off.
***** i know i use mostly maccree and hanzo but with hanzo i have problems vs jumping around genji i dont have problems with mccree i found out if you headshot him he uses deflect and then you have 5 more shots one shift and a flashbang to finish him there is no way you cant kill him after that :D but thx for the advice anyway :)

It wasn't. And yes, I know the scarrows bounce off, so you don't want to shoot them directly at enemies. I just never knew that sensors would stick. Probably because the few times I stuck a sensor into an enemy, that enemy was squishy and died. What if you hit Reinhardt's shield?
