I think my favorite kill with Genji of all time was the game where I deflected the arrow from an enemy Hanzo's ultimate. It makes them your dragons, as if you had fired them. It was so fucking satisfying. Granted, the Hanzo that fired it was the only person I killed, but it was still plenty cool enough for me.
I've done that too, except I killed 4 people. I agree it is easily the most satisfying thing ever. And killing bastions. Because fuck bastion.
+Brian Burnett
i think it only works if you reflect the arrow while its transforming.
reflecting to soon won't reflect the dragons that come later, as pointed out by a muselk video.
Brian Burnett my favorite is when I deflect grav get team kill and playy
Devin Carroll BASTION AND GENJI MAIN FOREVER
Nothing like reflect headshotting a widowmaker for a one hit kill. Had one leave the game right after
lol
+Kamikaze I once reflected a deadeye back to the head of a McCree. It was so satisfying
+Kamikaze I once reflected a Hanzo ult ! Fun stuff xD
+HighPotatoes You know you can't deflect Hanzo ult lol. Hope you're trolling.
PS: I once ulted as McCree and A Genji Deflected the shot, I got so upset I started playing Roadhog lol. It was still the Play of the Game but still lol.
+Ehri you can reflect a hanzo ult. you have to reflect the arrow he shoots before it turns into the dragon. Ive seen it done
Keep in mind that the right click shoots faster than the left. It'll have a higher dps against something like a Reinhardt shield.
+Jimmy Johnson Yea, 2x as fast.
I killed Reaper, when he was using Death Blossom, with deflect. It was beautiful.
+Alex Adamson That's dirty.
using mcCrees flashbang to stop someone's ultimate is so fun
+Alex Adamson I've done it too, it felt so right.
I do that all the time. Super easy and super fun
Geez, the more of your videos I watch, the more I realize how utterly different our playstyles are.
We're both analytic but you play really, really careful, while I am a very aggressive player, trying to be in the backlines, disrupting the enemy team (flanking, stealing their health packs ...) or just generally charging in. Hell I even defend the Payload with fucking Hanzo (because usually nobody else does
I don't always find EVERYTHING you say enlightening, but there is always SOMETHING that you say that is. This is why I keep coming to your channel.
you can't deflect winstons tesla either
+BigCatGaming
as a general rule i think you can only reflect back projectile attacks. anything that is not a projectile, like explosions and sprays wont work. it can even reflect tracer's bomb, but not the bomb's explosion.
also, you cant reflect melee attacks, instead it'll just block it.
+BattousaiHBr Tracer, D.va, WidowMaker, Bastion. = Hit-scan.
Projectile - is used for things that have travel time
Angelo Dato
sorry i didnt make myself clear, i meant literally projectiles, not the term projectiles.
+BattousaiHBr it can deflect the bomb .....but not the explotion......?.....what?
+BattousaiHBr i can hit the breaks on my car to stop the crash but it doesnt stop the collision.......thats basically wt u said
Just really quickly, I'd like to point out that Genji's swift strike resets with any elimination (kill or assist), not just with swift strike being a finisher. This gives you more options when using it. Also I feel like it wasn't touched on a whole lot that Genji is not an objective hero by definition, he's almost strictly for flanking and getting kills. Other than that though, I had been highly anticipating this guide, and am very happy with how it turned out, so thank you very much! :)
point blank on small targets like mercy, you'll hit all the shurikens with the Fan if you aim dead center for maximum dps and rapid takedown, but you really have to be in butt slapping distance for that :p
+Tichrai2 I don't mind being within butt slapping distance of Mercy ;)
Thank you! I've only been on OW for around a month now and seem to mostly play support heros... but playing Genji effectively is where I want ultimately be. This video was very helpful! Thanks again!
For these guides, having a bit where you specifically outline which heroes the character counters / is countered by would be very useful. Or perhaps even just having a separate set of videos where you talk about team compositions and hero countering would be handy.
+Mr_Chimick Yes genji counter everything that camp and lack mobility snipers bastion turrets, and is counter by Mei Wilson Reaper , symetra or at least you have to adapt your playstyle.
+Wohodix I don't think Reaper counters Genji. Mei, Winston, Symmetra do indeed puts Genji in a bad spot.
This guide helped me so much. I am the genji that is always up in your face, but this guide showed me that he isn't that kind of character. Thank you.
You didn't talk about very important Genji combos! He can triple jump by jumping, jumping off a wall, and jumping again. Right click + v + shift cancels animations and instantly deals a lot of damage.
+Henri V the second one is more like an exploit
Wee Tiger It's not really an exploit, just animation canceling. It is quite common in many games. You can also notably speed up Reaper's reload by meleeing after the ammo count updates.
+Henri V What happens if you right click + v + shift exactly?
ATB FIFA You shoot three shurikens and almost at the same time quick melee and dash. It can be done is extremely quick succession. It is faster than holding right click and does more damage.
The melee cancels the post shuriken throw animation that would otherwise slow your next attack.
lol
Good video! FYI (sorry if this was addressed in comments already) but you can deflect Mei's ult, Junkrat's grenades/trap, etc. Even Zarya's grav bomb! Anything that acts as a projectile can be deflected back.
unit lost after looking at other overwatch YTbers I wanted to clarify ur the best one!
+PoisonToad and the funniest one ;P
lol, yh
urm...
I like unit lost but I prefer cynical nerds guides they're more informative
I started the game playing genji. I did the classic begginner mistakes well because I was used to shooter's like call of duty but learned to play with genji effectively.
Pretty sure the right click fires twice as fast as the left click so it's better against the larger targets since u do double dps.
It's also good against a player rushing your face that is hard to hit, like Tracer, etc.
I played mostly Genji during the open beta, glad to see I was playing him more or less correctly, I think I got quite good at him. I saw people complaining before about "Genji snipers" who just sit back using shurikens, but like you said, he has low health and you can only get in there to finish people off (or to jump around a slow tank using the right click).
+Lucas Sharyat yeah exactly, in the beginning I was like "I got this Katana, I'll use him close range", and I kept failing for a bit. Then I thought, "well he's a ninja, ninja's are pure stealth". So I used him as a stealthy assassin and killed whole teams with it. Ninja´s preferred to kill their targets not by melee but by other means. If it had to be melee then so be it, but preferably not.
You forgot to mention that right-click shurikens also throw about twice as fast.
not twice as fast, left click is 1 second and right click is 0.8 seconds
+Unit Lost - Great British Gaming In close quarters it's great to use right click (because of the slightly shorter time between shots), melee (to cancel the animation), then swift strike for the kill. Best strategy ever
You should play metal gear rising: revengance. Now there's a real cyborg ninja.
See, when I first saw Genji's abilities, I was like "OMFG IT'S GRAY FOX/RAIDEN".
same!
pelipoika honestly, I think Raiden would take Genji on for a joke
Genji's Blackwatch skin looks like the "Samuel" from MGR:R.
I'd say that Hanzo's Cyborg Ninja skin looks more like Jetstream Sam
If you're close to a squishy target as Genji, I highly recommend to right click + V + shift for a big burst. The instant three shuriken followed up with a melee punch and a swiftstrike is very deadly to those with 150-200 hp !
Genji IS melee range. There's a reason he has deflect and right click.
With my experience with Genji, I'd say all you need to add is if people run for health and you have his Swift Strike available, then use that to steal their health. You get health back instead of them, so you get an immediate advantage over them and they don't expect it so you can usually left click and hit all 3 Shuriken in succession. I've killed so many Tracers who ran for health using that.
Right click has a faster fire rate so the DPS is indeed higher if all 3 hit vs. all 3 from left click
LOVE your content! I've watched 4 of your character guides in a row now
5:15 orthogonally is the word you're looking for, Tracer can only move orthogonally and diagonally :)
+Justin Giglio
No. Tracer has no vertical mobility, only horizontal. Orthogonal (and diagonal) vectors can still include the vertical plane.
thanks, I just really wanted to use the word Orthogonal :)
No shame, it's a great word :P
Ignoring rotation from the mouse, it's not strictly incorrect to say "Tracer can only move orthogonally," since WASD is at right angles. But I agree it's not an apt description, as a distinction has to be made between 2D orthogonal and 3D orthogonal. x,y is an orthogonal coordinate system, but so is x,y,z
I like this guy ^
Just adding, you can deflect and projectile, yes that means if you're close enough to Hanzo when he uses his Ult which is an arrow that then turns into a dragon, you can deflect the arrow and than the dragon becomes yours. This also means you can deflect Mei's Ult when its in the air and than you get the freeze, even Phara's ult can be deflected...
Also the direction you deflect in, is where your aiming, so you have to aim you deflects
Also, his 3 vertical shurikens have a faster firerate as he throws them at the same time
I think you mean horizontal.
TheRedstoneBlaze You are so true
+Murdoc Niccolas And deflect also neglects melee attacks
+TheRedstoneBlaze I think you mean diagonal.
Execpt for other enemy Genji Ults.
With Genji, in point blank encounters, use the right click throw as it is faster than the left click. You can fire (or throw) the spread twice per second but the left click is only once per second.
I once had a Genji reflect one of my Widowmaker Venom Mines. I was actually pretty surprised.
+ramirezthesilvite
lol
I once reflected a Widowmaker Venom Mine with my ability. I was actually pretty surprised.
Xake Frost
Well maybe it was you! lol
+ramirezthesilvite always burst laughing when i reflect widowmaker headshot back at her
Markka
lol That takes skill or a lot of luck so good for you either way!
i did too ;D
Another cool thing about Genji you might want to mention mate is that you can almost do an animation cancel with a regular melee attack after your mouse clicks AND your swift strike. It's pretty useful actually. Gotten pretty great at Genji after realizing that. You also just need to be constantly moving and double jumping as Genji.
I watched your 100+ hours character reviews back in november, so is genji balanced now or still too good?
+Robert Hankins he's fine;)
+Unit Lost - Great British Gaming That's good, thx😈
+Unit Lost - Great British Gaming can you reflect winstons main beam???
+Jack Brown : gaming & vlogs No, any sort of energy beam can't be reflected. Such as Zaryas constant beam.
+Robert Hankins I knew about zarya it was just it didn't clarify in the video
Genji became one of my favorite heroes, and a PERFECT counter for tracer, so you don't get hit. I remember one of my most spectacular play of the games with his ult, run up a wall, there was a mei, a bastion, a reinhardt and a soldier.... all of them were taken out by his ult, I just soloed them with the ult and his dash strike(BTW his right click with shuriken brings tanks down pretty fast)
Thank you for this guide, I main Genji.
You don't main a chatector if the Emmy team has a winston or another charetor that counters him the you will get slaughtered watch unit lost new video call the main overwatch argument please
+Ali Khaky-Kazzazy If you needed this guide you probably don't main him x)
+Ali Khaky-Kazzazy you shouldnt main any hero... overwatch is a game about choosing the right hero for every situation, you have to cycle through heroes sometimes in order to be effective and unexpected.
This guys already seen it and is referencing it. Tis a troll, my friend
I picked up the game and watched this after my first game of awful playing with genji and then I played again after watching and did really well. Thank you :D.
I hope new people sees this video, I get so frustrated when new players play him and think that he will be easy. It requires a lot of experience in the game to be good with him. It's also quite fun to kill a Genji as Genji when they dont know what they're doing.
I was one of those but then I played as genji 24/7 and now I'm pretty good with him
Joseph huval I am pretty good with him aswell, but when I started off to play him I knew that he wouldn't be easy and there fore waited until I had more experience in the game. Then I could understand how to play him effectivly.
How many hours is needed to learn him?
+shootingmen a lot you have to know when and how to use his abilities and know what enemies to attack and avoid but with practice you should be good I would just keep playing with him until u feel comfortable
Joseph huval I'll invest 10 hours. If it doesn't work out, then he's probably not for me. In the process, my win rate will most probably plummet lol.
I like your content man, one of the better ones for Overwatch. I have to disagree about the statement about range with genji, you say he's not a close range character, but he really is. If you watch many high level genjis they are all very comfortable in right click range, which is how they deal the majority of their dmg, it also means you can deflect more reliably. Your jumping and movement paired with deflect means his skill ceiling as high, and many fps gamers who may be amazing shooters, will struggle being unpredictable enough with the movement to really nail Genji.
I'm a Genji main. like if you are to1👍
ItsAwokenTitan same
Void-Playz in a roadhog.main
Void-Playz Welp, I Just Bought The Game, But I Played Before Hand. So I'm Gonna Be Hated, But I Main Bastion, Please Don't Kill Me.
ComedyBits EVERY beginner mains bastion and thinks its the best hero in the game. Nothing to hate at tbh i mained bastion when i started too
Zarkz Gaming yes genji is my main :)
Still remember this video:'),that's where i started with genji! Always remember:long distance left click, dash, melee(knife),if no kill fan trough it,near/medium distance:fan throw, dash, melee and fans to finish off(left click him if he stays still, for some strange reasons)
You can also not deflect the katana from genji's ult., it will just damage you
+Skorly You cant deflect any melee weapon
+sommernissen DK from all melee weapons except for he katana get blocked (you dont receive damage) but with the katana yu do receive damage.
+Skorly wut
+Copain It's true that melee attacks can't be deflected by Genji's Deflect ability, but all of them DO get blocked (meaning you take no damage, but no damage is reflected to the enemy team as is the case with ranged attack deflections).
However, using Deflect against an enemy Genji's Dragon Blade ultimate will not block any damage.
+Skorly
in reinhardt's case if im not mistaken even though you block the melee you still get knocked away.
I feel as though i should clarify the spread of Genji's right click is 100% accuracy when close enough because it will not spread at all if you're close enough or will hardly spread at all. Which is why the animation cancel combo is so strong with right click, melee, and his dash. Because you can instantly hit three headshots if aimed correctly and you're close enough. Which is a decent amount of times considering he's more of a flanker styled character.
I didnt know Muselk has 2 different channels
It's also worth mentioning that Genjis Ult cancels his deflect once it runs out. So if you're going crazy with his katana and think that if you start deflecting right before the timer runs out you might stay alive don't do it. I've forgot about this a couple times and it died because of it.
All genji players need to know, eliminations reset swift strike, activating the Q also resets swift strike.
+gameguy301
a nice strategy is, even if you're on the front with your team, find somewhere you can jump high (like a wall climb or just double jump), dash mid-air above your opponents and pop ult. the animation should take about the same time for you to fall to the ground near them and lock onto your targets, while leaving them little time to react if they didnt see you dashing from above.
2 things you didn't mention that I think are worth bringing up.
1. Due to the large delay between Genji's shurikens you can fit in melee attacks without losing much dps. Against squishy, hard to hit targets, it's often worth getting the melee attacks instead of trying to hit with the shurikens.
2. The range on the sword is way bigger than it looks. I often avoid jumping around when I have it out because I think the height will put me out of range. This is a mistake. Remain mobile, keep dodging. You'll get more damage out.
Grannys been told.
Beautifully simple. You made it sound so easy and you made it easy. I am not worried about ultimates, but it is useful for new Genjis to stay calm and JUST... PRESS.... E...
I DON'T like Bastion! Thanks for the guide m8.
+EnGalenPerson Good bastion doesn't give a shit about genji. Assuming that it has even half of brain.
+EnGalenPerson
The few Bastions that are any good will just wait and then demolish your 200 hp after you finish deflecting
+CamTheKitty A good genji will provoke the bastion with shurikens before deflecting, it's a brain game. :P
Saroon S No it's not. Bastion can easily cancel his shooting when he notices genji deflecting. As genji player I have seen bastions who will stop shooting the moment they notice.
I feel as if you made some very valid points. Mainly the ones about staying mobile and using your deflect when you hear or see certain things.... but some (in my opinion) important points were left out.
1) right click is faster than left click, which often makes it the better option when close to an enemy that isn't tracer or widowmaker (those beaches are like straws).
2) While it is true that working an opponent down from range is a good strategy, it isn't the only way to play genji. I have had quite a bit of succes with getting behind enemies. Newer genji player might have trouble killing people quickly, but once you get some practice it can be done rather quickly. If coming from behind you can use right click shuriken while right next to them 2 or 3 times and then swift strike to kill most heroes that dont have above 300 health. And besides flanking it can also be effective to literally jump out in front of the whole enemy team and use deflect. You have to remember that deflect takes projectiles from all directions (atleast in front of you) and make them go towards your crosshair. This means that if 3 people are firing at you at once you get some pretty intense firepower for those 2 sec. When facing strong dps heroes like soldier and bastion this can easily pick an enemy off and then you can escape with swift strike.
super cyborg ninja blindness is correct!
+Jonathan Martinez 100% every time my ult is up.
Some things that weren't mentioned here:
The right click on his shurikens deals the same damage and the left click, however the Damage per second is higher as it's fire-rate is higher.
The second thing is if you use your Ultimate you reset Swiftstrike cooldown, so you can swiftstrike, use dragonblade then use swiftstrike again.
Rest In Peace me: no ps4 or good pc, :'^)
Abare Black Hey I hope you get a PS4/PC soon :)
Thank you for these vids! I'm loving Overwatch and I can't wait till release!
SO you can deflect Winston's gun?
+Eevee™ no, you cant deflect any beams
+Unit Lost - Great British Gaming Well its not a beam :P. It's lightening. But if it showed him reflecting lightening it would be the most badass game ever.
+Kenneth Borges it's a beam of electricity
+Kenneth Borges It's actually a laser beam that looks like lightning xD
+Eevee™
No, and I get special joy chasing down Genji's as I stay locked on them through all there BS and there attempts in vane to deflect :D
Thanks man, although I'm watching this in 2017 you have inspired me a lot and thanks so much for that
When he mentions the right click, the 3 glaives actually fire twice as fast as the left click meaning you will actually get twice the damage out if you hit the 3 glaives with the right click twice in the same amount of time that you fire one left click.
Got a small tip that worked for me. Change the colour of your targeting system to red. Made me a lot more focused on aim...
This video really improved my Genji skill.
Love your vids dude, your so energetic and entertaining to watch while providing useful tips and tricks
Great video. After watching this and playing about 15 games in a row with Genji I have become legitimately proficient with him. Thanks!
I started with Genji first and felt in tune with this character from the get go. 6 hours play time with Genji alone this weekend for the open beta. Able to 1v1 almost everyone except for one of the support characters. All in all, fucking love Genji!
for around 5:20 I think the fancy way you wanted to describe tracers movement was that she's limited to the XY plane, assuming the Z axis is the vertical.
+Volrag Nope. In gaming, Y is up/down (vertical). The plane is XZ.
During the BETA I got accustomed to Genji. Still need to improve my accuracy with the projectile attacks with him and I need to know when and when not to __________ This video really helped. When I actually get the full version I'll be a pro! (Joking, but this really has helped a lot liking and subbing :))
I discover you recently and I love what you do ! You're doing an awesome work ! :D
Dude i love this guide. I can't play till i get a new computer, but I beta and i loved him. Ty
i love your guides for overwatch they help a lot
You make this hero look like all kinds of fun, nice vid :)
Love your guides...you have turned me onto a lot of diff heroes, although after playing this weekend I am sad i didn't get the game with the early access now I have to wait :(
man this was one comfortable guide to watch! subbed
wow his guides are freaking awesome and so helpful to learn any hero wow cheers from me
I was annoyed when you first started putting up so much Overwatch content awhile back. But honestly, now that I've played the beta, I can't get enough of it.
To be fair, you should go in for kills when you can 1 shot combo, which is basically right click->melee->shift. You can 1 shot 200 and under pretty easily.
When I saw Genji's deflect on his Nomad skin, I noticed his sword never comes out of his sheathe. He uses his shurikens. Just a cool thing to consider when figuring out how he does it.
Genji's my most played, at around 35 hours, you gotta be behind enemies to pick off supports and finishing off enemies damaged by teammates. You need to know when to be aggressive too and need to utilise your fan attacks and melee
I've only been playing Overwatch for a few months but your videos are a fantastic help. One question, though.... are you planning on making a Lucio guide? He's my favourite healer to use when defending points so I'd love to see your take on him, especially as I recently watched an Overwatch World Cup Video featuring yourself using Lucio in the Great Britain team :).
"I'm sure there's a fancy way to say this". Lol! "One plane of movement" WAS the fancy way to say it.
Very good video.
And I love how the guy has the skill to reflect a damn Helix rocket. Holy shit.
Genji is also about knowing when to be aggressive and when to play safe. A lot of times you poke down someone with shurikens, and then go in and murder everyone.
nice~ I always tend to kind of rush in the fight and die lol
I'm not good at paying attention to what's happening around me, I focus too much on killing someone and forget to do that but- practice makes perfect :D
Sty I love your OW vids and your super in-depth well thought out analysis and guidance on this game, while also making me laugh my ass off.
Genji is my favorite Hero, great tips here! I also did Genji gameplay on my channel as he is such an in depth Hero!
Dude your channel is amazing!
While I agree with the range attack/melee finish combo, it should be noted that because of his mobility it's best performed behind enemy lines and a littlebit on the side where they don't expect you.
ooooh I have a feeling I'm going to be good at this game. I'm making strategies already! Even if you can't deflect Bastion ( or any character really) you can still you the time if they don't fire to get away.
Genji's right click spread is also faster (0.7 secs) than his left click (1.0 secs) too which makes it good in close quarters.
I started out as genji when i first got the game and I did great. Hes still my best character.
Genji's Blade Dash resets on ANY elimination- not just eliminations with the ability itself. So you can Blade Dash > turn > Shuriken/Dragon Blade swing and it'll still reset Blade Dash.
Hey awesome guides man keep it up!
While I understand where you're coming from regarding that Genji should you know, chill at the back a bit, dishing out damage, he is also a great flanker, and great CQB hero. You mentioned how Genji's biggest asset is his movement, and boy do I agree. This makes him the best escapist in the game, which means that you can, if you're good, almost always stay in CQB. Just know where your closest full health pack is, and basically camp behind enemy lines. Also don't attack predictably, meaning that while camping in the same area, you never come out from the same place, creating confusion among the enemies. God I love Genji :D
PS: Genji is THE best reaper counter, just bait him up close and reflect only 2 shots from his shotgun, do your swift strike and he's dead guaranteed.
Yeah, mid-close range skirmisher Genji is strong. But a well played flanking Genji is nightmare fuel. :p
Couple things I learned playing Genji, because he is a difficult character he tends to be very unforgiving, the smallest of mistakes and you're dead. I agree with all the points provided in this video. Plus I find myself having worse "defence outcome" is when I am tired and/or not focused 110%
Common mistakes I notice with most Genji's ive met, think they are Ryu Hayabusa in a Shonen Anime. I fell for that trap until I have come to realize it doesn't work that way at all. HOWEVER, if you pull it off there is no better feeling than destroying everyone in front of you using everying you have on point.
It's funny, people think of Genju like a the pop culture "I kill everything ninja".
But he really is more like you'd expect a stealthy assassin in a battle to be. He uses mobility to gain a strong advantage against you, weakens you from range, then moves in to finish you off before you can stop him.
seagull has a great example of genji play (mix^ vs c9 on his channel), playing incredibly patiently until he can make a play.
I dual main Genji and Tracer
It took forever to learn them, but the result it terrific
I definitely want to get an Offense Hero down pat, and Genji seems like the go-to
He's the only one besides Lucio, who I main, who has a great mobility
Great Job! I learned from the guide. Thank you.
7:00
*raises hand up*
yup thats me XD
Really liking the game so far (only started playing yesterday) can't wait to get better with genji and hanzo
Thank you dude I've been want to play as him
the only thing I noticed Tracer can do that is unique is when I walk backwards off the map is I can panic rewind and land on the top of the cliff at full health
Great, quality content mate. Nice work! :)
Brilliant video mate! Keep it coming!
