I think I'm just terrible at this game, I can't Bastion to save my life. During the open beta my most effective Bastion strat was to: 1. Spend the entire setup phase looking for a good spot 2. Fail to find one in time, settle for whatever 3. Get a few shots off, potentially a kill 4. Be immediately spotted and forced to reposition 5. Get killed while repositioning 6. Switch to Widowmaker or Symmetra and actually start getting some work done

That's like me with Heavy in TF2. People say he's the easiest class to play, but I can never get much done because there's always like 5 people attacking me. I have over 500 hours in TF2 and Heavy is my worst class. I guess both of us hate playing slow and boring high dps characters.
This tactic won't work for very long though since experienced players will eventually learn to not shoot at Genji while his Reflect is up (same thing with Zarya shields). However, I've seen a recording of a competitive match with Cloud 9 where they ran the "Protect the President" tactic (1 Bastion on the payload, 2 Reinhardts to protect him, a Mercy for heals and revives and 2 Widowmakers for sniping), and their Bastion accidentally killed himself because he kept shooting a Genji with active Reflect.
Eh it's good to repeat it, for new people that join the video and a reminder for people like me that watch so many youtube videos through eachother it all sorta blurs into one big mess

I'm amazed that people think Bastion is all about camping or get angry because they see a Bastion camping thinking he's invincible. Since my first try with Bastion I've realized the key is repositioning and knowing the maps. I don't understand all the fuss against Bastion really. He's easily countered by almost if not by all the other heroes, but can occasionally hold 2-3 enemies on keypoints of the map. Also the point of turret mode is not wrecking the other team, the purpose is to pressure them to disperse. Getting creative on picking a good location to go turrret mode is part of the fun and strategy with Bastion. And camping on a corner from time to time for trolling purposes doesn't do any harm. You know you'll get killed and that you can easily destroy him. So what's the problem?
+Atopico8 People walk into bastion 1 at a time like it's CoD and then complain when he gets every potg because at low tier it's impossible to get a potg over a woodchipper that wood feeds itself into. It's a problem that solves itself as people learn to stop going in 1 at a time vs the bastion.
The problem is that if a team builds around Bastion he becomes a real nuisance (such as a Reinhardt, Mercy, and Zarya sitting next to him all day buffing him up with shields and healing). It's easy to counter if everyone on your team is on the same page, for example running a comp to get D. Va in range to explode her mech deleting the enemy team + Bastion from the battlefield, however often times when solo queueing people just panic trying to flank the Bastion one by one and end up getting themselves killed because the enemy team is so coordinated around protecting the turret bot. Then again, a good Junkrat makes short work of any team comp. Unfortunately most players end up spamming grenades without much care for aim or strategy so yea Junkrat is often out of the picture.
tbh most of the salt is because his dps is so high he just steals every fucking potg. you could get a sextuple kill and potg still goes to bastion with his 500 dps.
+KjcKiesh Well all i did in the Open Beta was play D.Va, and i played against good people aswell. They picked heroes too counter me but i still did well.
I just got Overwatch after playing for free weekend, and Bastion is my go to character. I've managed to mostly figure him out for myself, but this video did have a lot of good points. I can definatly say that when utilized correctly Bastion is an unstoppable powerhouse. I honestly have no trouble playing him for an entire game. I infact won an eight player deathmatch with a 12 point lead, without swiching characters once. My trick is to memorise map layouts, find all the good places to use turret mode, and just switch between them. I general find that aprouching from covered areas, staying above opponents, and staying mostly hidden(but with good firing area) make for a good win. Also, BE AGGRESSIVE WHEN CORNERD. If you are surrounded or trapped, do not run. Because of Bastion's low mobility, you will not be able to outrun others. Your best bet is to stay where you are, go into turret mode, and gun them down for all you're worth. This is seriously your only chance of survival.Also, avoid swift flanking characters with close range weapons. The biggest offenders are Genji, Sombra, McRee, and Reaper. AVOID CLOSE RANGE COMBAT WITH THEM AT ALL COSTS.

I had a slight argument with a buddy about a cheese strat with 5 bastion and 1 lucio. The bastions were on defense, and I know 1 of the maps they played on was Hanamura. Here, they set up at the 1. capture point, spreading out so that they had eyes on all three openings through the gate. They were a coordinated team who communicated sighting the enemy and similar info, concnetrating fire on anyone entering. In addition, the self heal + lucio made them far tougher than they apparently had any right to be. attempts at getting them with splash weapons, for example, would be followed simply by the bastions quickly healing up. It was apparently a video somewhere on youtube, but I couldn't find it myself. I don't nearly have the experience to say definitively, but I would guess there are things you can do with this. awesome vid, though!
I actually didnt like some of the characters at first but your videos changed my opinion showed me that every character is really good if used correctly keep it up mate loving your videos!!!
Wow! I've been playing bastion wrong all this time. I always thought of him as "find a sweet spot with good view of the choke point and you're invincible" which was the case in beta, but not anymore. Thanks for the tip!

"Don't sit on the payload" You'd think that you'd be taken out pretty easily since you're basically sitting on a platform in an open area, but somehow, it works. Especially with a pocket Reinhardt/Orisa. You get shielded, you tear apart your enemies while pushing the objective, occasionally heal yourself after killing a Reaper, rinse, repeat. Bastion's Ironclad passive makes this even better, since he has an extra 20% damage while traveling from point A to point B.
A point that I would like to put forth is that bastion is good for breaking out of spawn when you get camped, as you can slowly advance out the door providing cover fire for your team and since you're not far from spawn it's easy to go back and heal/switch. Some cases you can actually sit within the heal/switch zones while weeding out those pesky campers and when you're done you can just press h. Another good thing is most of the time you're inside spawn thus keeping range which makes it impossible to be range countered or flanked (get bent Genji), and I think hooked too don't quote me on that.
Hard-counters to Bastion: A good widowmaker, Pharah, Junkrat. Soft counters: A good flanker like Reaper or McCree or Genji. A lot of people think Genji is a hard counter because you just reflect, but Bastion can just stop shooting him hypothetically. Although in the heat of a game, it could go either way depending on how well Genji or the Bastion plays. However, there is noway a Bastion can deal with a Widow/Pharah peaking around the corner and sniping him at long range. He just cant reach them. Same with Junkrat firing at Bastion from his blind spots or around a corner.
Great video, its going to be funny seeing noobs complain about Bastion all over again when Overwatch drops, but honestly he is kind of weak compared to other heros and is very situational, but he is really fun when played correctly and moving around. :)

Been watching your videos for a bit now recently and I gotta say I like them. I have to however protest and insist that bastion is op, or at the very least obnoxious to play against. He's a decently sized health hero, with a self heal, most damage in game at absurd accuracy and range...and if they set him up behind a reignheart, it usually takes 3-your whole team to try to deal with him.
wait...so...Bastion is not op....because he can be easily counter picked....BUT.....he can Counter those VERY same counter picks....by....moving from one place to another? Yeah...he needs a slight tweak in damage output, or a slower rate of fire.
***** Thank you for re-iterating that. As to the OP. Positioning is part of skill. Higher skill 90% of the time will win over counters. If you have two players at the same skill level assuming skill cap. Then the counter will 90% win a one on one. Being that this is a team game that was an oversimplification. There are too many factors for something as simple as that. For example multiple teammates working together can over come skill. Or overcome counters if at the same skill and they outnumber them.
#1 Smartass very few people can. Genji's counter can deflect Hanzo's and Pharah's ulti. Difference is, Genji takes skill to use. Bastion...none at all. Repositioning isn't a skill trait, it's an instinct that any player with experience knows. Now don't get me wrong, I personally have no problem beating the living daylights out of Bastion. However, even I can admit that his damage output per second is a little too high for how easy he is to use. I would like to see a very slight tweak in either his damage (say, back to close beta stages, OR a slight reduction in attack speed.). That's not a nerf really. A real nerf would be taking away half of Reinhart's shield regen. A 1dps dmg reduction is nothing.
D Mar A decline in ability is by definition a nerf. And experience is a factor to your skill.And deflect takes no skill at the level that bastion can wreck. You just press the button and look at them. Its really not that hard. I feel almost all the heroes have very simple kits and low entry level personally.

Quick question, do you think Dva needs to be able to do more damage? I play as her sometimes and her damage output is just so low when comparing her mobility when she shoots.
People say that when Bastion is in his turret mode his critical spot in his back is also his head, it's not, it's the middle of his chest that pops out. His heart you could say. If you pay attention to his chest piece when in non turret mode and then look at his back in turret mode, you'll see.
There's are really nice spot on anubis final push for an awesome temporary turret mode where you just shoot between 2 creates and the majority of the time opponents wouldn't even see where its coming from
An extra piece of advice for people who play Bastion, especially on Payload maps on defense. If the attacking team is nearing the objective, don't set up behind the objective and expect to mow them down. At best, you'll get one or two people before the rest of the team uses the Payload as mobile cover and pushes it in for a win. You won't even be able to contest the payload, because you'll be behind the objective.
Cliff's Notes version: Shoot and scoot. Kill a couple and find a new firing position. Also works good in any game with a sniper or similar ranged support class.
Bastion seems like the Overwatch version of a mini sentry engineer of TF2. Sorry for the comparison, but this is literally the same strategy I've used, just instead of moving a sentry, its moving where you're in the sentry mode.
You forgot to mention that you can switch to turretmode mid-jump. I also haven't seen you do it. It's very effective to jump around a corner and beeing sieged up at the same time
An interesting thing you can do is ride the moving platforms into the last point on Volskaya Industries in turret mode as Bastion. Never tried it myself, but I've seen some cool clips.
What is interesting is how to deal with bastion. I hoped to see what exactly bastion can be afraid of, but I haven't found this in this video. What exactly enemies are going to do if you don't change position?
You will be amazed at still how many people still do this and it still wins games as people at least on quick play don't want to team up to take down a supported Bastion.
You should basically never heal yourself with any character while being shot at. Roadhog and Bastion players, even Lucios (on their own) are just feeding ultimates to the enemy by doing so.

Got to love the Bastion + Reinhardt combo on-top of the payload. Myself and 2 friends did the tactic, me as Bastion and both of them as Reinhardt, pushed the payload all the way to the end. I know for a fact that people will learn the counter on full release, but even still... what a laugh.
Works so well against newbies who refuse to change their character to adapt! I do love this strat. Pharah and Junkrat can break this combo from range, whilst Tracer and Genji can get up close and take them apart from the inside.
Good thing we still got overfeel "Dragon" animation shorts as well as daily does of Stylosa Overwatch video I'll be in a mental breakdown waiting the game to come out
Unless you have a coordinated team of friends, Bastion can still be an absolute nightmare on the last control point of Volskaya. Good luck trying to get a Reinhardt shielding your Widow in a team of randoms, or a designated Bastion Buster Genji who can also avoid getting shredded by 2 Torbjörn turrets.
Artameful No, i think it is pretty good since i only started playing overwatch about a few month ago. Although im not going to say that i will pull me through all the ranks, It definitely works in silver since a lot of them dont know any other tactics and cant defend against it.
I really like Bastion's Ult. He is able to blast the enemy and gains some health because he does need to get a little closer to use it effectively. Turret mode... eh he's tough but can be countered. I think that's why Blizzard hasn't nerfed Bastion because he doesn't need one.
I enjoyed your video and I'm not trying to troll or QQ here. The main points in your video are: 1. Move more 2. You might not be able to play bastion the whole game 3. Bastion is not OP The first one is good advice. The other two are conjecture. What are you basing your statement that he is not OP on? If players use your "move more" advice, then bastion will continue to be a power house in this game even after the meta settles because they will be playing this character better. I am not certain that he is/is not OP... but you are so confident in your statement and I am not so sure it is accurate.
i actually think that Bastion is like half offence half defence as speaking of health points Bastion doesnt offer a large amount of health actually even tho he still got 300,but his healing allow him to be like fall back at the correct time and then heal back up. I wouldn't say hes OP,but hes real powerful that can pretty much shred enemies with his minigun. Just u gotta know when to shred them and when to fall back,I believe he can do both offense and defense very well :)
The thing is, the other strategy often does work. You keep saying people aren't dumb, and they'll catch on and counter you, but it seems like a lot of them don't.
Ultimately, the big thing about Bastion is that he is genuinely a really powerful unit, but most people just don't really grasp how to utilize his full potential. He's viable throughout the meta, but his overuse by newbies makes him look weaker then he actually is.

+JXZX1 He's definitely not unusable, but his lack of mobility can be pretty limiting against competent players. Aside from his tank mode ultimate, the main way Bastion kills you is from the element of surprise, not realizing where he is. Changing positions frequently will help, but as Sty said, in most cases Bastion isn't viable to play through an entire match, as opponents will eventually wise up and make him ineffective. Granted changing characters during a match can often be a good strategy, but probably the most so with Bastion, since his inability to attack on the move makes him the most predictable.
FoenixRight Outside of a few specific characters, though--Mei and some of the other supports are the only ones I can think of--I doubt any character can be viably played through an entire match. As for his mobility, I find that his recon mode is very underrated: it rivals Soldier 76's reliable damage with the only negative being his bulky build. Additionally, Bastion's self-repair increases his survivability considerably, as you just need to find a quiet spot in the map to heal rather than go find a health pack which may also be desired by characters like Tracer or Genji.

1 bastion I am fine with.. More than 1 bastion makes me angry
I used bastion 1 time and went 27-1 he's a skill less character for casual players

I just got Overwatch after playing for free weekend, and Bastion is my go to character. I've managed to mostly figure him out for myself, but this video did have a lot of good points. I can definatly say that when utilized correctly Bastion is an unstoppable powerhouse. I honestly have no trouble playing him for an entire game. I infact won an eight player deathmatch with a 12 point lead, without swiching characters once. My trick is to memorise map layouts, find all the good places to use turret mode, and just switch between them. I general find that aprouching from covered areas, staying above opponents, and staying mostly hidden(but with good firing area) make for a good win. Also, BE AGGRESSIVE WHEN CORNERD. If you are surrounded or trapped, do not run. Because of Bastion's low mobility, you will not be able to outrun others. Your best bet is to stay where you are, go into turret mode, and gun them down for all you're worth. This is seriously your only chance of survival.Also, avoid swift flanking characters with close range weapons. The biggest offenders are Genji, Sombra, McRee, and Reaper. AVOID CLOSE RANGE COMBAT WITH THEM AT ALL COSTS.

I had a slight argument with a buddy about a cheese strat with 5 bastion and 1 lucio. The bastions were on defense, and I know 1 of the maps they played on was Hanamura. Here, they set up at the 1. capture point, spreading out so that they had eyes on all three openings through the gate. They were a coordinated team who communicated sighting the enemy and similar info, concnetrating fire on anyone entering. In addition, the self heal + lucio made them far tougher than they apparently had any right to be. attempts at getting them with splash weapons, for example, would be followed simply by the bastions quickly healing up.
It was apparently a video somewhere on youtube, but I couldn't find it myself. I don't nearly have the experience to say definitively, but I would guess there are things you can do with this.

Wow! I've been playing bastion wrong all this time. I always thought of him as "find a sweet spot with good view of the choke point and you're invincible" which was the case in beta, but not anymore. Thanks for the tip!

"Don't sit on the payload" You'd think that you'd be taken out pretty easily since you're basically sitting on a platform in an open area, but somehow, it works. Especially with a pocket Reinhardt/Orisa. You get shielded, you tear apart your enemies while pushing the objective, occasionally heal yourself after killing a Reaper, rinse, repeat. Bastion's Ironclad passive makes this even better, since he has an extra 20% damage while traveling from point A to point B.
A point that I would like to put forth is that bastion is good for breaking out of spawn when you get camped, as you can slowly advance out the door providing cover fire for your team and since you're not far from spawn it's easy to go back and heal/switch. Some cases you can actually sit within the heal/switch zones while weeding out those pesky campers and when you're done you can just press h. Another good thing is most of the time you're inside spawn thus keeping range which makes it impossible to be range countered or flanked (get bent Genji), and I think hooked too don't quote me on that.

Hard-counters to Bastion:
A good widowmaker, Pharah, Junkrat.
Soft counters:
A good flanker like Reaper or McCree or Genji.
A lot of people think Genji is a hard counter because you just reflect, but Bastion can just stop shooting him hypothetically. Although in the heat of a game, it could go either way depending on how well Genji or the Bastion plays.
However, there is noway a Bastion can deal with a Widow/Pharah peaking around the corner and sniping him at long range. He just cant reach them. Same with Junkrat firing at Bastion from his blind spots or around a corner.
Great video, its going to be funny seeing noobs complain about Bastion all over again when Overwatch drops, but honestly he is kind of weak compared to other heros and is very situational, but he is really fun when played correctly and moving around. :)

Been watching your videos for a bit now recently and I gotta say I like them. I have to however protest and insist that bastion is op, or at the very least obnoxious to play against. He's a decently sized health hero, with a self heal, most damage in game at absurd accuracy and range...and if they set him up behind a reignheart, it usually takes 3-your whole team to try to deal with him.

As to the OP. Positioning is part of skill. Higher skill 90% of the time will win over counters. If you have two players at the same skill level assuming skill cap. Then the counter will 90% win a one on one.
Being that this is a team game that was an oversimplification. There are too many factors for something as simple as that. For example multiple teammates working together can over come skill. Or overcome counters if at the same skill and they outnumber them.
#1 Smartass very few people can. Genji's counter can deflect Hanzo's and Pharah's ulti.
Difference is, Genji takes skill to use. Bastion...none at all.
Repositioning isn't a skill trait, it's an instinct that any player with experience knows.
Now don't get me wrong, I personally have no problem beating the living daylights out of Bastion.
However, even I can admit that his damage output per second is a little too high for how easy he is to use.
I would like to see a very slight tweak in either his damage (say, back to close beta stages, OR a slight reduction in attack speed.).
That's not a nerf really. A real nerf would be taking away half of Reinhart's shield regen. A 1dps dmg reduction is nothing.
D Mar A decline in ability is by definition a nerf. And experience is a factor to your skill.And deflect takes no skill at the level that bastion can wreck. You just press the button and look at them. Its really not that hard. I feel almost all the heroes have very simple kits and low entry level personally.

People say that when Bastion is in his turret mode his critical spot in his back is also his head, it's not, it's the middle of his chest that pops out. His heart you could say. If you pay attention to his chest piece when in non turret mode and then look at his back in turret mode, you'll see.
There's are really nice spot on anubis final push for an awesome temporary turret mode where you just shoot between 2 creates and the majority of the time opponents wouldn't even see where its coming from
An extra piece of advice for people who play Bastion, especially on Payload maps on defense. If the attacking team is nearing the objective, don't set up behind the objective and expect to mow them down. At best, you'll get one or two people before the rest of the team uses the Payload as mobile cover and pushes it in for a win. You won't even be able to contest the payload, because you'll be behind the objective.
Cliff's Notes version: Shoot and scoot. Kill a couple and find a new firing position. Also works good in any game with a sniper or similar ranged support class.

Bastion seems like the Overwatch version of a mini sentry engineer of TF2. Sorry for the comparison, but this is literally the same strategy I've used, just instead of moving a sentry, its moving where you're in the sentry mode.
whenever I used the mini I placed it risky and built a new one once it was shot.

You forgot to mention that you can switch to turretmode mid-jump. I also haven't seen you do it. It's very effective to jump around a corner and beeing sieged up at the same time
An interesting thing you can do is ride the moving platforms into the last point on Volskaya Industries in turret mode as Bastion.
Never tried it myself, but I've seen some cool clips.

What is interesting is how to deal with bastion. I hoped to see what exactly bastion can be afraid of, but I haven't found this in this video. What exactly enemies are going to do if you don't change position?
You will be amazed at still how many people still do this and it still wins games as people at least on quick play don't want to team up to take down a supported Bastion.

You should basically never heal yourself with any character while being shot at.
Roadhog and Bastion players, even Lucios (on their own) are just feeding ultimates to the enemy by doing so.

Got to love the Bastion + Reinhardt combo on-top of the payload. Myself and 2 friends did the tactic, me as Bastion and both of them as Reinhardt, pushed the payload all the way to the end. I know for a fact that people will learn the counter on full release, but even still... what a laugh.

Works so well against newbies who refuse to change their character to adapt! I do love this strat.
Pharah and Junkrat can break this combo from range, whilst Tracer and Genji can get up close and take them apart from the inside.

Unless you have a coordinated team of friends, Bastion can still be an absolute nightmare on the last control point of Volskaya. Good luck trying to get a Reinhardt shielding your Widow in a team of randoms, or a designated Bastion Buster Genji who can also avoid getting shredded by 2 Torbjörn turrets.

I really like Bastion's Ult. He is able to blast the enemy and gains some health because he does need to get a little closer to use it effectively. Turret mode... eh he's tough but can be countered. I think that's why Blizzard hasn't nerfed Bastion because he doesn't need one.

1. Move more
2. You might not be able to play bastion the whole game
3. Bastion is not OP
The first one is good advice. The other two are conjecture. What are you basing your statement that he is not OP on? If players use your "move more" advice, then bastion will continue to be a power house in this game even after the meta settles because they will be playing this character better. I am not certain that he is/is not OP... but you are so confident in your statement and I am not so sure it is accurate.

i actually think that Bastion is like half offence half defence as speaking of health points Bastion doesnt offer a large amount of health actually even tho he still got 300,but his healing allow him to be like fall back at the correct time and then heal back up. I wouldn't say hes OP,but hes real powerful that can pretty much shred enemies with his minigun. Just u gotta know when to shred them and when to fall back,I believe he can do both offense and defense very well :)
The thing is, the other strategy often does work. You keep saying people aren't dumb, and they'll catch on and counter you, but it seems like a lot of them don't.

Ultimately, the big thing about Bastion is that he is genuinely a really powerful unit, but most people just don't really grasp how to utilize his full potential. He's viable throughout the meta, but his overuse by newbies makes him look weaker then he actually is.

+Sulliver Vittles I disagree here. He's certainly isn't going to he unstoppable, but I don't think the counter strategies against Bastion are *that* conclusive.
+JXZX1 He's definitely not unusable, but his lack of mobility can be pretty limiting against competent players. Aside from his tank mode ultimate, the main way Bastion kills you is from the element of surprise, not realizing where he is. Changing positions frequently will help, but as Sty said, in most cases Bastion isn't viable to play through an entire match, as opponents will eventually wise up and make him ineffective. Granted changing characters during a match can often be a good strategy, but probably the most so with Bastion, since his inability to attack on the move makes him the most predictable.

Outside of a few specific characters, though--Mei and some of the other supports are the only ones I can think of--I doubt any character can be viably played through an entire match. As for his mobility, I find that his recon mode is very underrated: it rivals Soldier 76's reliable damage with the only negative being his bulky build. Additionally, Bastion's self-repair increases his survivability considerably, as you just need to find a quiet spot in the map to heal rather than go find a health pack which may also be desired by characters like Tracer or Genji.
+JXZX1 Well he is almost never used at the pro level because while he is very good, he can be countered rather easily. His damage comes from being held down in one spot and that is a death sentence at that level of play.
