    Every time I watch and hear George, I miss him all the more. I had a chance meeting with him at a hotel in Los Angeles. Waiting for an elevator after checking in, I was carrying two suitcases. The door open and as is normal for me, I wait for everyone to depart before I get in. Suddenly there he was... holding a uke in one hand and a light bag in the other. He said, “checking in?” I replied “ yes,” and he said, “nice hotel, this one.” Then he left. I think Olivia and Dani were with him but I don’t really remember. Crazy.

As much as I love playing piano it is hard to pull around something so large and heavy. I've even played the several chords I know sitting around on a camping trip and notice the radio was turned off and I had people listening to me play at random.

      You ever hear the funny story the late Tom Petty told about George? He said George once took him over to the trunk of his car, and George had a trunk full of ukuleles. He dug around and pulled out one or two and gave them to Petty. Petty said George earnestly told him to take them as, "You never know when you may need one..." This is a slightly different mix / performance than the studio track from George's 2002 Brainwashed album which featured a strummed acosutic guitar intro instead of the doubled dowbeat and guitar riffs intro heard here. This was from a live soundtrack performance from March of 1991 at a George Formby Convention held at Winter Gardens in Blackpool and eventually later broadcast on June 6th included in the 1992 TV segment of 'Mister Roadrunner' with Jools Holland (piano) and Joe Brown (guitar) & Mark Flannagan (guitar), Herbie Flowers (bass) and also features world reknown drummer & percussionist Ray Cooper and George on 6-string Uke.

    In 1991 Harrison appeared on Jools Holland’s Channel 4 show Mr Roadrunner, in which Holland travelled to Tennessee and Mississippi in search of the music of America. In one section of the show, Holland pitched a “musical tent” in which he discovered Harrison, who played ‘Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea’ on a ukulele, with backing from
    Jools Holland on piano,
    Ray Cooper on drums,
    Joe Brown and
    Mark Flanagan on guitars,
    Gilson Lavis on stand-up bass, and
    Herbie Flowers on tuba.
    Mr Roadrunner was first broadcast in the UK on 6 June 1992. ‘Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea’ was first recorded by Cab Calloway in 1931, Harrison’s Brainwashed version was a remix of the TV recording.

    I don't want you

    I forgive you
    Cos I can't forget you
    You've got me in between the devil and the deep blue sea
    I want to cross you off my list
    But when you come knocking at my door
    Fate seems to give my heart a twist
    And I come running back for more
    I should hate you

      @donaldsaigh8785 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathanlewis6146 This isn't big band, and Glen Miller was a bandleader, not a composer. George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern, and Harold Arlen created the songs that are the standards of popular music. The songs are not a style of playing. They are the compositions that have been established in the repertoire of popular music, the way the Eroica has been established in the repertoire of symphonies. The only Beatles' songs that have come close to becoming standards are 'Yesterday' and 'Something'. Google 'Porgy and Bess', America's greatest opera that contains the greatest songs of the 20th century: Summertime, It Ain't Necessarily So, I Got Plenty of Nuthin', Bess You Is My Woman Now, My Man's Gone Now, I Loves You Porgy', There's A Boat That's Leavin' Soon For New York, et.al. These songs contain a beauty and emotional depth the Beatles were never capable of. They have been covered by artists of the first rank for decades. Check out the TH-cam video of Willard White and Cynthia Haymon singing Gershwin's Bess, You Is My Woman Now' to understand that the Beatles are not the be all and end all of music.

    • @jonathanlewis6146
      @jonathanlewis6146 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@donaldsaigh8785 OOOHHH, I see the confusion now. I thought you were claiming that "Gershwin" was more famous then the Beatles, correct me if I am wrong but what you are actually saying is that although Gershwin may not be as popular media wise currently, his influence can be found far more often than that of the Beatles. And if that is what you are saying than I totally agree with you, but as a counter point I will mention that Gershwin's been around since the late 1800's, as opposed to the Beatles who started only 60 years ago. So yes, you are correct that Gershwin has probably had a larger hand in music, but the Beatles did not only make great songs, *they helped make a new genre* and that genre has already split into multiple others, and those subgenres will most likely have subgenres of their own in the future. So that's why I think as time rolls on the Beatles influence on music as a whole will completely overshadow that of Gershwin's, but that's just speculation- I could be completely and utterly wrong. It's nice to talk with someone who actually knows what their saying for once, nowadays people don't talk like this, they just yell louder than the other person.
