    There's a guy who sells kits in the US that are around $90 USD , housing, thermostat and gaskets included. I see you're using the $60 USD inline housing. However I think I've found an even cheaper way of doing this with 2 housings that I'll be butting up against each other squishing the thermostat in place. I plan on making a video, but thank you so much for explaining the science behind it

    I read somewhere that the original thermostat arrangement only allowed a maximum hot/cold water mix of 15 or 20 percent which was done to aid quicker warm up and made the engine run hotter. I recently bought a thermostat conversion kit from megasquirt v8 that contains everything needed to put the thermostat back into the inlet manifold where it belongs. It's not cheap but it is worth every penny. I've got a Disco2 Thor engine in my SD1 and it dropped the engine temperature down from 95 degrees plus down to 86 degrees and it stays there.
    The only problem is that you can't have the aircon compressor but other than that it's a great bit of kit.

    • @lozl
      @lozl  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That sounds very cool indeed! God knows the Thor had its problems but in many ways its the best of them, the plenum is much better arrangement than the older engines.
      That sounds like an excellent conversion, I bet that's fantastic.
      I had an SD1 on my Rolling Road the other day, a 4.3 with TVR heads, inlet and throttle body. Sounds ded lovely with the exhaust headers too.
      Is your SD1 online anywhere??

    I also love the coil pack relocation. Such a great idea and if you ground it properly with a nice table and get it secured well it is so awesome because I had to change the coil already since the overpriced kit came with cheap ones and it was so easy right away I just checked all the wires one was a little burnt then the misfire switched to another cylinder of the same coil so I just swapped out the coil pack and boom it was fixed. I realized if somebody wants to do this upgrade they can avoid taking the manifold off just by abandoning the old coil packs behind the engine and using a long skinny funky tool to disconnect. Harness plugs from the original coils on to the harness extensions. Now you might have to remove Sai tubes from the back but that's no big deal. Otherwise you can leave the manifold on just run the extensions

    • @lozl
      @lozl  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm, this sounds like a very good idea indeed! I hate where its located. Its a horrendous position and a nightmare to do anything with it. Its a nightmare just to put leads on, the leads are not happy being routed behind the heads too. Now you say it, I wish I had done this when I was messing around with the engine.....
      The second I have any problems with any of it, I will change the arrangement.
      Where exactly did you put yours? I've found it all a big tight directly in front of the engine?

    • @ronaldrrootiii6040
      @ronaldrrootiii6040 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lozl well I found a kid and it was way too expensive I wish I had used the second kid that I found later but I found a kit that runs to extension harnesses from behind over to near the alternator and it comes with a bracket that hooks to the alternator and it makes it sit between the alternator and the factory tire jack in that open area it's pretty cool. I think if you Google it you can find like it for cheaper that actually utilizes your upper plenum bolts and it holds a little bracket right there and then your coil packs go right under the hood in the upper plenum area where there's a little bit of space between the runners. That one utilizes Factory like plug wires mine can't with some really expensive custom cut ones that were super long on one side

      @@ronaldrrootiii6040 cool thanks for the info. I will have q look when the time comes. I think our arrangement under the bonnet might be slightly different as mine is right hand drive. But I'm sure I can find somewhere.
      Oh yeah I've just seen the on top of plenum kit using same plug kesds that's a good money saver for sure not having special leads made. Up.
      As you might have seen I'm making a mobile rolling road and this is the reason for the discovery, to pull this heavy thing around. We will try a year of making money and if 2024 goes well we will invest a bit more money in the discovery. This coil relocation will defiantly be on the list.

    Great vid Loz...first compehensible explanation of how the 'sputnik' functions. I have a p38 V8 in Australia and the underbonnet temperature shocked me when I first got it. Standard issue T/stat here was 87°C, soon replaced by repairers with the Gates 82° sputnik. In p38 forums, I have seen talk of placing a 'naked' stat in an apparently existing recess (in the valley?... poss. left over from the Classic RR) but not enough detail explained. Your vid, with the details about drilling bypass holes, and the link to the inline adaptor have given me the confidence to do this mod. I was just about to shell out for a new sputnik...saved! I also guessed then the OEM running temperature might have been an emissions bodge. In forum discussions the subject of fuel mapping and altered thermostats came up, and knowlegable people said that the stock engine management map had enough 'bandwidth' to compensate for 82°C. Low 70°s might be a stretch...probably an eye on fuel consumption increase might be in order. Thanks again.

      Neil, thanks for the comment buddy,much appreciated. Its a great boost to hear someone is watching from so far away.
      I'm really pleased you liked the explanation, I quite enjoy explaining things 😊
      Its pretty crazy that thermostat. I like the sputnik name :) I didn't realise about the old style thermostat mod, that's very clever, I didn't notice this feature still being on my inlet manifold but then I wasn't looking for it at the time. This would be be a really neat way of sorting the cooling if its possible.
      I dont know for sure that this thermostat arrangement was for emissions I'm just speculating, I'm not authority on these engines but I bet that's the reason for the madness.
      I too was concerned about the running temperature being too low, and was preparing to have to swap it out for a higher temperature stat, but it has worked really well. The obd reader I have shows the engine to be very steady at around 80 degrees (iirc), so I'm really happy with that cool state I put in.
      See the last discovery video I think its called conclusions, I talk a bit more about the results of tge engine rebuild including the temperature.
      Thanks again

      Yeah if its the same routing you can definitely do that. I know the TD5 thermostat is slightly cooler than the v8 one, but not by much, and that plumbing arrangement is still really daft. Hmm I assume the engine is tuned properly. Do you have the correct coolant, it only lasts about 30 months then it become acidic and needs to be changed. Are you using the correct oil, flat tappers need zinc in the oil 20/40 not synthetic. Do the 2 fans work, one is the clutch or viscous fan the other is the condenser fan, it’s behind the grill. If it is not working then the engine will over heat. All of thing things must be correct. My truck run at 189 F on a 30 C day in the driveway

    • @lozl
      @lozl  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@murraylynn-tp8vm Hi Murray, thanks for the comment. So many questions. Yes it's all ship shape, I don't believe it has ever overheated luckily. This video is all about making it a bit more sensible. I tow a very heavy load with it and I want to feel confident that it can pull up a very steep hill indefinitely on a very hot day. This is something I now feel confident it could do (and it has done). I would however be worrying a lot with the original setup.
      The coolant specified for this model is g13 (I think its 13...) and last 5 years or so I believe. I did start and bed in the engine with high zinc oil but have now switched to no zinc as per spec for this model. A shame really I would way prefer to have the high zinc oil in but its not good for CATs and lambda sensors.
      I did repare the AC fan but I believe this isn't used until the AC is switched on.

      On 7:48 you mentioned that the thermostat will never come in contact with the warmer water on the other side and that you will drill holes, why not invert the thermostat housing?

    • @lozl
      @lozl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@x-man4702 it's already inverted. It already has the temperature sensitive side of the thermostat facing the engine. The problem in this case is that with no holes, the pipe is perfectly sealed shut, nothing can flow at all. So the engine gets hot at the entire pipe stays cold, so even though the thermostat is facing the engine it still won't open as the whole pipe will stay cold.
      Its not necessary in most normal thermostat arrangements because the thermostat is actually mounted in the head not half way down a pipe.
