How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Demon 170 Engine? The Truth Hurts!

- I recently had to replace the engine on my Demon 170 and many people asked how much it would actually cost if I had to pay for the repair out of pocket. I reveal how much the bill would have been if Stellantis had not honored my warranty. The number may surprise you.

So I had that stage4r package with Forza performance/cicio performance completed in October and I have 3k miles on the build. This past Monday the 2.7 redeye supercharger came apart and metal pieces got sucked into the engine and it's locked up... So now I have to replace the engine on my own.... Just paid the car off and it only has 11,000 miles on it total .... it's a sad day for me.... My new mechanic said the 2.85 upper pulley is too aggressive for the redeye blower, he said the 2.4 can handle more than the 2.7.... have you heard this before?
Racer X I’m a dealership tech. The warranty labor to replace the complete engine and oil cooler with cylinder head removal for inspection is 13.5 hours. Our warranty labor rate is 161.00 = 2160. I’m sure the tech was paid diagnostic time that would be extra time. Also the customer pay labor time would be about 26 hours. Yes on an engine replacement Stelantis under pays the dealerships/techs. The engine cost is 31315. That’s only the engine. Dump the car.
You gotta love warranty work!! 18yrs of dealerships
Warranty work does not include vaseline , maybe a little sand though . Lmao . The reason i left dealership life 20 years ago .
$50k was the exact amount I had to pay to get my engine replaced in a semi truck.
😂 twice the torque, half the horse, 20x the lifespan, and actually earns you money. Thats well spent!
Standard , or mountain motor ?
I owned a large repair facility that dealt with mainly semi,'s, but we did anything skidders track loaders and we did track work. Had 5 in-house techs and 2 service trks. I personally did all the rebuilding of engines and trans and never come close to $50k cost. If the block was bad I found a block. I'm curious what engine and I'd assume a cat at that expense.
@@davidthomas3729 The dressed reman Maxxforce 13 engine was $27k, and the labor was another $20k something, then odds and ends and taxes all done by the International dealer. If it ever goes out again I’m buying a low mileage used engine. Could have saved $10k+..
@@davidthomas3729how long ago was that? And what economy? A Cummins X15 is $37k right now and after robbing Peter to pay Paul $50k is pretty standard if your business wants to make money
The Demon 170 should of been built with a dry sump system.
yes indeed
Moral of the story, sell your Demon before the warranty expires.
HA good one
I must admit Stellantis has pushed the limit on performance. Here's the kicker, in the real world you cannot have a daily driver and a race car in the same machine. When cars get over around 650 HP you have more of a racer than a daily driver. No matter how great the engine is, all that horsepower and torque stresses things to the limit and yes they break even in new, pristine condition. There is a reason true race car engines are broken down after each run. The 170 would certainly be a fun daily driver, providing you don't overdo it, because power breaks things, Going to car shows, street fairs, and occasional fun at a stop light would be okay; but if you are indeed going to race it, be prepared to spend big money on repairs. It is, what it is.
Engines that are broke down after each run are top fuel. That's a whole different animal.
race car engines are generally stock... like nascar.. The reason they're broken down isnt't because of "STUFF BREAKING" its because they literally run it hard the whole time and then they use thinner oil to get every last drop of horsepower out of that car making it wear EXCEPTIONALLY FASTER than normal
Because a dealership would never inflate the cost of repairs when it’s a warranty job….👀
Not correct, all Dealers are audited by their Distributors... whatever this guy says , say 50k is not what the dealer gets paid, fact
I don't know what dealership you worked at.
and with most warranty jobs, techs get bent over w/no lube
Very true!! No KY or nothin’
Really great service. Awesome that they can do all of that. To think a 1971 Challenger would have cost $3k or $4k for the entire car and with the 426 hemi another $850 or so. You, sir, are definitely a part of Mopar history. Good video, Racer x.
Inflation accounted for today's market from $4,000 in 1970 to 2024, that's over $31,000!

That technician must have been a genius. That has to be a hell of a job to replace an engine like that.
It's not much different than replacing a 5.7 or 6.4. subframe unbolts and drops down with the engine and you have all the room in the world to work. Just a few extra bits on any hellcat or demon engine.
These cars are as easy as a box Chevy to work on 😂
Lol😅
Yeah if you work on Mopars it’s not super complicated. Just gotta know what you’re doing of course and have all the tools, hoist, room, etc. My mechanic is dropping a 392 into my single cab Ram, I don’t have the tools or room so I have to pay for the extra Labor etc.
Easy compared to a lot of cars. Try putting long tube headers on a fox body Mustang with the 4.6 engine.
😱And that's why I paid for a 7 year warranty on my Hellcat and kept it stock other than a cold air intake!
Wow- I thought they didn’t do extended warranty on hellcats! That’s what all the dealers by my house told me.
I got a 125k extended warranty on my Ram TRX.. It's the Hellcat engine so I would assume it can be got on any Hellcat powered vehicle...
Yeah, good choice. Since I didn’t use my warranty, Dodge refunded my money at the end of 7 years. I didn’t buy the warranty on my TRX because the Hellcat engine never had a single issue in 7 plus years. Hope I didn’t make a mistake.
@@rickcapabianco6411 I got a Fidelity warranty on mine and they've already been able to bill a new purge valve to it successfully
@@rickcapabianco6411 The dealer told me the same thing but a couple weeks later I received a letter from Dodge indicating that they would give a Lifetime Warranty. When I called they said no lifetime on the Hellcat but they did offer a 7 year for about $3400 that was refundable if not used. I took it.
Just finished a CT5V Blackwing warranty engine replacement. Warranty cost was $22,000.00
That 6.2 lt4 is as common as the cold thou 22k includes labor too I’m sure at 200 an hour x 40 hours
These power levels are for aftermarket professionals...
22k installed for an lt4? thats reasonable imo but what would it cost not warrantied.
@@goblinzl1 factory builders are literally watching TH-cam videos to figure out how to increase power levels…
I don't know but somehow this saga reminds me of StangMode and his Shelby 500.
Only difference here is that his Coyote engine was worked by a reputable shop that guaranteed it for more HP and capable of taking more mods.
However, StangMode's Coyote engine went to the cemetery a couple times /. Then he finally got rid of the Mustang.
Wishing you the best 👍🙏
Predator engine
It's a predator engine it is a coyote based engine but it isn't a coyote. Also another note some people think all dohc 4v Ford motors are coyotes this also isn't true. There are multiple different ones but most of their stuff after 2014 are coyote based engines but not all coyotes there was also the predator and voodoo and before that the terminator engine and the cobra and Mach 1 motors before it and the condor 5.4 gt500 motor and trinity 5.8 gt500 engines. All dohc ford that aren't coyotes. Just a heads up I see this alot
The technician that replaced the engine probably got around 8hrs labor total. All the little things that racerx talked about that the technician did came out of the goodness of his heart. Dodge pays for the engine replacement and nothing more, not the time spent talking to Star and nothing for dealing with the service rep that came and inspected the car. I have 25 years of Chrysler experience and know this unfortunately
You are very right, most of the people that have never worked for an independent dealership doesn’t understand flat-rate. Over 20 yrs. Most in dealerships. 3 tenths to do a recall and that includes waiting at the parts counter for you parts. Good times and bring your own tools. $$$$$$$
It’s unfortunate the techs get shafted on labor for warranty repairs. I’ve heard and read all about it plus the horror stories in some cases due to shorting the techs.
Stick with it X enjoy the hell out of it! Real enthusiasts don't really care what the "drop off value" actually is because in real life...WHO CARES? Use what you purchased or what you built and ENJOY IT! That's what we do right? Lol Apparently some people are more concerned about "resale value" or "depreciation value" rather than having fun and living life! Buy it,build it,have fun and let the chips fall where they may.
Glad you got it back in working order. Keep up the great content!
Thanks for your in depth analysis for your engine. I enjoy watching your channel and gain a lot of valuable information on the Challenger. Thanks again and keep those dream cars shining.
Thanks for sharing and keeping us updated. Can't wait for the first drag run!!
Another honest open video. Thank you
Pray you have much better luck with new engine RacerX.
you deserve it.
I love your content. I always learn something new.
I had work done on a ZL1 yesterday. It was $159 per hour on the labor rate. Sure everything is a little more in Tampa. Lets call it $170 per hour. That comes to 117 hours of labor or almost three weeks. Yes, some extra stuff done. Never heard of a crate motor taking 117 labor hours to install. Since this was the first time the tech had ever done this install there must have been a huge amount of training, a big learning curve, consulting, double checking, and testing to get to a 20K labor charge. All good, hope this one is trouble free and traps a higher MPH than the last one right out of the gate.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing.
Like your channel Bud. Thanks for posting.
Fingers crossed that all goes well with the new engine. Thanks for the video.
If anyone is not aware, when he says a STAR case was opened, STAR is essentially our technical assistance resource and it's basically a requirement on a job of this level to open one up. 👍
wonder how much of that $48k he claims actually goes to the tech for installation.
@amstaffmike80 tech pay varies quite a bit by location but I'd estimate the tech earned about $1200 on that job. Of course the dealer is charging their normal warranty rate to Chrysler, ours is about $185hr
Why are people commenting about installing the engine yourself. It’s an under warranty car, that makes it a moot point, period!
Some folks appear to be Armchair quarterbacks. 😉
Actually, the warranty “may” apply if you use the car for racing. Stellantis could have walked away but they didn’t.
@@josephvaldora49 okay, but the car is made for the race strip.

I’ve done probably 50 plus engine swaps. I can see $8,000 to $10,000 for labor on this engine. They cooked the books a little since Stellantis was writing the check.

Great info
Makes a lot of sense to me ,i wouldnt want to change that engine out ,im glad they stood by you and fixed that hot rod , im glad they changed all the oil lines and other stuff .
Glad you got everything done and covered. I owned and built and raced many vintage Mopars. I own 2 late model Challenger's. One is a Pro Built E85 Hellcat. I had to relearn everything in the last 7 years of owning these 2 special Dodge SRT Vehicles. It's way different and I don't have that facility or tool's either! But Ost Dyno Does! ❤🐈⬛️
Good Afternoon Big bro, First I have always loved your videos. Now unfortunately now a days instead of people appreciating the value if just learning something they tend to spoil it by knowing everything. So for the rest of us thank you, & keep moving forward. Have a wonderful day, & Thank you.
And that’s why you don’t take a chance on the flawed oiling system with a front sump. Dry sump is necessary for those hard launches. An engineering flaw. It happens a lot these days, especially when corporate is pushing.
This. You're 100% right. That was a decision made by an accountant, not an engineer.
Nice shout out to OCMotivaror on your shirt!!

Those Caddy’s amazing machine! Insurance will be crazy on the Cadillac give away! My experience once something catastrophic happens something else will follow up. I sell my cars immediately.
Congrats . I’m glad they treated you right. But I believe too, that they stepped up for you because they did not want the negative TH-cam content if they did not step up. I think the average guy would not be so lucky. But truthfully as well. You underestimate people’s abilities. There are way more than the .02 % of people out there that could do this job. Proper tools and equipment is always important. But there are in fact many skilled mechanics both professional and non professional who can do that job. lol moment, the mechanic went the extra mile and checked everything, including my spark plug gap. 😂
Shout out to that dealership, they knew what was up lol
Every Dodge tech. Should have done what your guy did Racerx. Everyone pays the same amount and should get the same service. But glad they hooked you up!
Thanks for the update alot of us were wondering what it costs truly not some Billy Bob.
They are on back order until the end of this year, and you have to buy the wiring harness separate from direct connection.
where did you find that info from? and does it say that they will be available through 2025?
Exactly correct that engine more than likely drops thru the bottom. Better have a lift!!
Please let us know about what is failing in the engines. Very curious...
I'll stick with the simple LS chevy.
I have seen plenty of LS Engines Blown up. Especially when Clown 🤡 Backyard Mechanics buy a Tired LS out of a Junkyard and throw on a Chinese Turbocharger. Whatever Engine is Built for Performance, it has to be built with the best internal parts. Obviously the Bean Counters at Chrysler only cared about Money 💰 Savings. If You go back 65 Plus Years ago up until now. Chrysler still has a better track record than GM when it comes to Engine Design Failures.
That go mango …. Looks so good
I’m glad they warranty your 170 brother. Almost all factory blown motors will void the warranty if it has a k&n filter. ( factory charger induction)
How’s the alignment after they dropped it and replaced it?
Did you see the new one before it went in or did you check the numbers on the block to check if its a different number or a blank block number? Id be curious
At how many miles did you start racing the demon? Even though the break in is 500 miles it says to not race it until 1500
I had 67 heat cycles in the engine prior to putting in on the dyno or racing it. It actually has very little to do with mileage and more with heat cycles and variable load. I have seen guys with 1500 miles and only a dozen heat cycles on the engine and its not properly broken in. I have also seen engines completely broken in correctly at 200 miles. The 1500 mile thing was put in there for the guys who take long trips at static rpms that don't understand how to properly break in an engine (more of a catch all). Dodge has already stated that the engine failure had nothing to do with the break in process.
@@RacerX9 Thank you for the reply! That makes a lot of sense then.
oil level overfilled , like the rest before your engine replacement? Mine is overfilled 7.5 plus, what did your tech say about that
take out the K frame 4 bolts, take off transmission mount & driveshaft, disconnect the radiator hoses and transmission lines, remove the alternator, disconnect the steering column and spindle/upper control arms, unplug the sensors and engine and transmission comes right out, we just did it, about 4 or 5 hours to take it out.
Without a lift with regular tools?
@@RacerX9 Yes, regular tools, however, we used a lift to raise the body off the K frame, engine, transmission and suspension. Without a lift, use an engine hoist and take out the engine and transmission together, however, it is a pain the pass to get it back in, from my experience
The Cadillac's are badass but I gotta ask what the 2 smaller black holes under your hood are for?

Did they index the plugs ? So the electrodes face the intake track

Is the Cadillac CT5 on the same platform as the recently departed Camaro?
When I worked for Acura back in 94 we did an engine on an NSX and it was 25k we had to send it back to Japan they covered it we had to drop the entire rear suspension and lift the car up it was really huge wide
is it still a Matching numbers vehicle?
I bought a 2011 challenger in toxic orange (v6) rallye package, so fully loaded in 2011 for under 25k. 48k is crazy
Fun fact, warranty labor rate is different from customer pay labor rate. The manufacturer pays a set labor rate that is less than what a dealership will charge a customer.
I realize the labor cost involved besides the $28K for the engine but $50K total is complete insanity. Which explains why I could never have one. They're nice however... for someone else to enjoy.
I've seen 3 170 engine chrysler seap in the tx fb market. But lesson to racer x . On tje average person can't swap
Does the engine swap lower the resale value as it is no longer numbers matching?
Honestly, since the work was officially done by Dodge, and it is well documented, it should not make a difference.
Everyone will be glued to the YT channel; it’s not a matter of if, but when. Hope the channel yields enough revenue; because the next engine is on Racer X. I agree with the other commenter, dump it while you can. A pedigree name and hype; with the reliability of a Yugo; nothing about this was supposed to be practical. Nail it; boom, expensive letdown!
real question is how much value does it lose not being numbers matching anymore? knowing how most ppl pull the factory demon engine and trans and put it away and upgrade a different engine and trans so the demon and demon170 can be put back to stock
I have 2016 Chrysler 200C AWD and I had bad Differential in rear and they had to replace Driveshafts hub assembles whole back drive assembly.
Covered under car's warranty.
That was $5,000 including labor and taxes, 2018 prices.

Welcome to the X family, good sir!
It would be really dope to see someone put this engine in a jeep or a viper
this is why , I have a old school mopar .
Did the tech drop the entire front subframe with the engine bolted to it as the aftermarket speed shops do?
Well, you’re a TH-camr reaching over 200 thousand ppl. Of course they are gonna take care of you they don’t want that bad publicity. Or at least they shouldn’t. Glad they took care of you. All ppl should have this experience, unfortunately they don’t.
Sheesh that’s a lot!
I just looked at demon 170 specs and it doesn’t not have a dry dump oil system. Nor external separate fuel filter. Also, a reason I think the car is so hard to launch perfectly is the rear suspension. #1- demon 170 ADS suspension on drag mode: firmest rear compression and rebound. Front is firm compression and soft rebound). The rear end links are fixed and cannot be adjusted. So is the rear sway bar. I think if you upgraded the coilovers, added adjustable sway bars w end links, and changed camber angle for more negative camber then there could be a vast improvement in the launch. And first 330 ft.
In other words, the demon149 is not well engineered at all. “Baddest muscle car ever” my a**
I would venture a guess and say not every Demon 170 owner would be getting the same care as racer x.
His TH-cam channel generates a lot of interest and if they dump on him thats going to not bode well for PR, IMHO
My father told me that dodge wasnt a good brand in the 90’s. This all makes sense
Try 70s and 80s also😊
Wow, thank God that you didn't choose to tune and void your warranty. SHEWWW
Beautiful car and yeah definitely baby the hell out of it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What length is your necklace? It fits better than mine does.
Are you worried it’s an engine issue and this one could go also?
Least you can get help from stellantis since you’re a TH-camr. The rest of us are waiting forever on parts
Nice ocmotivator shirt 😂
How many miles did you have
I'd be doubling if not tripling the break-in time! Another channel says that the warranty for these 170's states that damage may not be covered if done while racing. Is that true?
You can do 37 break ins or extend time for a year won’t change a single thing. If issues it piles up period. Do a couple quick oil changes cut filter apart you have your answer.
Damn, it would cost more to replace a Demon 170 engine than to completely overhaul a semi engine. That’s mind blowing.
Yeah,it's not just a swap.Has to be tuned with computer, one of the reason you have your old times still.Deff not a fun job,you can do on a weekend.
@Racerx, There's a racing oil by a brand called 'Driven'. It was formulated by a certified Tribilogist and has his own TH-cam channel. I wonder if swapping out the oil for a higher additive package would help the demand placed on the engine? Id hate to see something happen like this again. Best of luck bro!

I would certainly call them and ask what they'd recommend for it 😊
@QuicKurtZX14R LOL thank you I couldn't figure it out

Hey Paul have you heard that Dodge has trademarked the name for the United States cuda
My usual obligatory comment that you should go back to a Last Call Hellcat (or even go pre-Stellantis on the cheap and mod it). My local dealer's region just lost their tech rep (on that note, their entire reach back chain was removed). Tim K is gone. US engineers being laid off left and right. A dealer mechanic can work on a Hellcat. My local dealer actually just did an engine swap on a TRX and said it was relatively easy. I wish you all the luck if you choose to keep the 170 but brother, I would not. If the idea of a blown motor is an inch more stressful than "Unfortunate, but that's part of the game," I don't think it's an ideal candidate to race.
I know the idea of stepping back from such an exclusive club has got to be gut-wrenching, sincerely, but if a Hellcat will last you and any dealer can work on it, that's the move. You could also do an entire series on trying to get better times than you got in the 170. Would be awesome.
The issue is that I already did the hellcat thing and the content dried up.. which is why I moved to the hellcat platform! There is not much out that’s all that exciting right now in my mind

The real question gonna be not how the car is at 500 miles (the break in period) most of us is waiting to see X how is that car gonna do when you put it back on the track. THAT THE 50K QUESTION. anything before kinda Doesn't matter only if the car act up doing the break in Process then plz let us know. Because if that car do what it did before dodge is F! Period
Fyi, they weren't flying all those people in just because you're special x this is Big money corp business. They making sure to cover their end. Because that car mess up again. They gonna blame it on you and probably wont fix it again for free Warranty or not. so just watch yourself 💯
I didn’t realize that was the hellephant motor in the 170s. How does not having matching numbers any longer affect the value of the car?
Whenever we have engine failures all components related to engine performance were checked oil coolers, radiators and torque converters just to name a few. If there was a problem they were replaced or rebuilt. Equipment dealers are different than car dealerships though. But when you are talking the Demon 170 without mark ups the price is not much less than a 2023 Cat 420 back hoe. I think every component related to that Demon 170 engine's performance should be inspected at least.
On the average vehicle yes you can swap a motor or a transmission in a weekend if you know what you're doing without a lift but on a car like that demon 170 that's a VERY special vehicle & race car you don't want to be fucking around with that in your driveway like some backyard mechanic that needs to be done damn near in a clean room... A $28,000 engine❓Jesus God congrats on your engine replacement 👍💯👍
Good thing it was under warranty lol
I always buy extended warranty for cars and electronics.
I’m sure they had to do a lot of tuning to get the car just right since it has so many features which ppl forget. the ecu learns and adjusts as you drive. But stellantis also had to diagnose the issue. And figure out why the engine broke. The obdII scan will tell you a lot. But many times it doesn’t bc sensors can be tricked if problem is from a combo of mechanical issues.
Either way the demon 170 is made to run 1/4 mile drag races. That demon launches so violently and has so much torque that parts will definitely break. It’s not a matter of “if” but “when.” That’s why the manufacturer warranty for this car is worth its weight in gold! When these demon 170’s are resold used. I would only ever buy one from a dealer that’s CPO. And buy the longest, most comprehensive CPO warranty they offer.
